tomorrow we'll be open again (open/mingle)
Who: Visitors, students and teachers at the abandoned temple school
When: June 26 - July 9
Where: The building and grounds of the abandoned temple recently renovated into a school
What: Classes, hanging out, sparring, dinner and any conversations that people would prefer to keep private.
Warnings:None anticipated! Since this is a mingle, warn in your comment subject line if necessary.
School Kitchen
[The kitchen is on the first floor towards the back of the building, and fairly large, with two sinks, a large wood-burning stove and oven, and a small assortment of inexpensive cooking tools, pots and pans Hakkai has purchased from flea markets. There's an attached walk-in refrigerator and freezer that looks like a plain stone-walled larder, except that, as you walk further in, it gets colder and colder. It's probably magic.
Anyone is welcome to use the facilities to prepare food or teach cooking, although it's strictly bring-your-own-ingredients. Make sure you clean up after you're done!]
Classrooms
[There are classrooms on both the second and third floors, in all sizes from a cozy study-room that can accommodate five or six to large rooms that could seat fifty. A few have desks, tables, and largely empty bookshelves. Most have a blackboard mounted on the wall, and windows open to the summer breezes., and the ones empty of furniture have still been cleaned and are free for other uses.
Being uninhabited, they aren't always guaranteed to be empty. Curious animals -- or animal spirits -- may wander through. Watch for wasps, or the occasional tanuki…]
Courtyard
[A moderately sized yard surrounds the building. In front, it is partly paved, and partly shorter grass, free for kicking around a ball or practicing martial arts. Most of the sides and back are heavily overgrown, with barely any effort made so far to cut back the vegetation. Trees, vines and bushes entwine in bright, summery green foliage. At the very back of the yard, at the bottom of the garden, a pond lies veiled heavily in green duckweed, its banks choked with reeds and lotus. Once, it might have been a cleansing spring. Now… well, from the way the water moves, there are some very big fish swimming under that duckweed.
Or, at least, they're probably fish. It's hard to be sure. Swimming is not recommended.]

June 28th
Boring book stuff? You're at a school!
[He doesn't care that it's a young kid. If he's that articulate and he can apparently stretch himself out, then he's old enough to understand the value that books could provide. In his completely biased opinion.]
no subject
[He frowns at Yoon, looking more perplexed then anything. Was he really enjoying that book that much? Why?
After finishing stretching out, Goten makes his way over to Yoon curiously. He moves to the older shinki's side and stands on his tiptoes, trying to look over and see what he is reading.]
no subject
[Because to Yoon it's a whoooole lot.]
no subject
[Goten just looks more confused by Yoon. You can't eat a book, it's not like money that can buy food either. It can't help you in a fight. Did this guy hit his head or something?]
Hakkai is teaching me a lot about Chi and stuff. That's why I'm here. Not for books.
no subject
[He certainly wasn't Goten's age when he learned to read.]
What is Hakkai teaching you about Chi for? [He gets it as a basic metaphysical concept but...] That's way more advanced than reading.
no subject
[Goten frowns at him. He's not too little to read, its just really boring and difficult sometimes. Not to mention Kazuma left a bad taste in his mouth about books and studying and kanji.]
Hakkai is teaching me cause I wanna get better at it. I'm better with Chi then I am with shinki stuff so I wanted to learn more about that. It's a lot of fun.
no subject
... Well. I'm not a Chi Teacher and I'm not a powerful shinki, but I do know how to read and write.
[He pulls out a pad of paper and a pencil from his satchel, then sets it down beside him.]
Unfortunately you'd have to sit down for a little while, but if you did...
[He MIGHT be offering to help Goten out with some of the harder words and characters for the afternoon.]
no subject
Okay, what's next?
[He's giving Yoon the benefit of the doubt. He still doesn't see how reading or writing can be all that useful or fun. But there has to be a reason this guy likes it, right? So he can at least give it a couple minutes.]
no subject
Yoon picks up a book next to him that he hadn't found particularly challenging, because it was a recipe book for beginners and all of the characters he figured out easily enough.]
You could read this book aloud to me and when you don't understand a character I can write it down, then we'll write it out and study it together.
[It's the first thought that comes to mind.]
no subject
So if I donno something that's okay cause then I can just ask you and you'll tell me, right? You're like a living book, huh?
[But he reaches out, taking the book. Normally he'd groan about it but the fact he can see pictures of food on the cover does have his interest peeked.]
What kind of book is this?
no subject
Well, you're right that I know a lot for being a shinki. I'm kind of a genius at remembering things I've read - and this one I skimmed already.
[He taps one corner.]
It's a recipe book. It teaches you how to make different kinds of food. So if there's a character you don't know, it's probably a kind of food or a special way of cooking or a utensil you'd see in the kitchen.
no subject
[Goten's eyes sparkle, he'd never have to wait on someone else to make dinner or lunch again. This means he could make food whenever he wanted. Dessert and meats twenty-four seven! He grins a bit, opening it and flipping to the the first recipe.]
no subject
[But he's also not trying to make it sound hard.]
Reading's the important part. You can't practice what you can't read.
no subject
[He narrows his eyes determinedly at the book and gives a firm nod. He can do that! He's going to do that!]
Does it matter...where I start then?
no subject
You always start with the ingredients list. You grab what you need ahead of time in case you don't have it on hand. Then you can either find it, or find a different recipe. You may also need a pot or pan that's bigger than the one you have - or maybe one that's much smaller. All that kind of stuff you read first.
[He runs his fingers past the instructions.]
Always read the recipe once first before you practice doing it for real.
no subject
[ Goten squints again at the words before glancing over the book to Yoon]
If I read it, can we make it?
[Keyword being "we"]
no subject
[He starts to get really upset like HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT KNOW-- but Goten's a kid. So he keeps it in check. Mostly.]
Because if you make a mistake, all of that food goes to waste.
[But he nods anyway.]
Depending on what the recipe is and if we can find the ingredients for it, sure, we can make something.
[It's a school after all, and if Goten's willing to read because of this, a practical application might be the best thing for him.]
no subject
[Goten nods his head eagerly. He can get behind that. So read first, get ingredients and then cook while reading. Okay, that doesn't sound too hard. He smiles to himself but it's also directed to Yoon]
That would be the best! I've never made anything before! Um, does it matter where I start on this book? Does it have to be page one cause it has a picture of some vegetable thing and I'm not interested in that.
[Meat, fruits and desserts please!]
no subject
[Yoon shakes his head No.]
It doesn't have to be on page one, but it does have to be the start of the recipe, not somewhere in the middle. Ingredients are always first, remember.
[Then he motions for Goten to follow him down to the kitchen.]
We'll see what kinds of supplies Hakkai has stocked here before we pick something, too.
