017 | Earth Turns Slowly

Who: Everyone!
What: Firefly viewing
When: Evening July 21
Where: The Near Shore
Summary: A vent is open and the fireflies are beautiful.

There have been so many things happening lately that the Heavens (mostly Amaterasu) have decided that the Far Shore residents deserve something nice to occupy their time. So everyone has been invited to view the fireflies on the Near Shore - a traditional sort of viewing in Japan that usually takes place during the summer, when the fireflies are out in force.

Traditional attire is encouraged, but people are also encouraged to just let themselves be comfortable and drink the night away!

The Viewing

The spread for the viewing is gorgeous. There are some lights strung up the trees, blinking slowly like fireflies as the actual fireflies mingle with each other and the people who have come to see them. Additionally, the Heavens have provided light snacks and an alcoholic drink that is easy to drink and very potent.

Fireflies

The fireflies are very friendly and easy to catch. They will gladly blink up from anyone's palm who happens to hold them. Also, they seem to have no fear of the people here, coming up close to anyone who happens to be nearby. They may even land on you if you stand still enough!

Blights

It will become more and more evident as the night wears on that some of the fireflies look distinctly different from the rest - they are larger and darker in color and more aggressively "friendly" than their fellows. These are the ayakashi disguised as fireflies and wherever they have touched someone, they will have left blighting. And that blight will slowly spread - should anyone else touch the blight, it will spread to them as well. The blight is not unique other than the fact that it doesn't seem to start hurting until after the blighted party has noticed it.

Vent

The opened vent is around a hundred feet from where the party is being held. Ayakashi are still pouring out of it, each of them as small as the firefly-like counterparts. Anyone who approaches the vent will be attacked by a swarm of bug-sized ayakashi. The vent is closing, albeit slowly, and will close more rapidly as more gods and shinki come to keep the ayakashi in check. By midnight, it should be closed completely.

In Summary:
  • See the fireflies
  • Fight some ayakashi
  • Heal some blighting
  • Help close the vent
  • Have fun~

[Has the world gone mad.

[Bugs.

[They have been invited out of an evening to go and look at bugs.

[Yes, very well, they are superficially rather pretty if only one can take them as - as tiny floating lights. Unfortunately there are no such thing as tiny floating lights what there are is bugs. Bugs... talking a good act or... something, the better to creep up on people all unawares and make them think they are completely and totally harmless which they are not BECAUSE THEY ARE BUGS.

[Breathe, Kija. Just... try to breathe.

[Oh, his skin is crawling.

[And - and as if that were not bad enough the Princess is absolutely enraptured by them. Clearly they must be exerting some kind of unholy influence upon even her that is driving her to this because THEY ARE BUGS GOOD GRIEF this is not a pleasant evening out this is AWFUL. If only she had stayed inside, where she would be safe! and yet out she had come, which - which meant here he was, too.

[In a cloak.

[Holding an umbrella.

[Standing very still. Barely daring to breathe. Trying. Very. Hard. Not. To. Panic.

[Bugs.

[THIS PLACE IS INSANE.]

Kija you are my #1 favorite forever

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She doesn't notice him immediately, because he is standing very still, after all. But when she happens to glance in his direction, she spots him standing not far away.

And not moving. He...

Oh dear. ]

Kija?

[ Getting up, she crosses to where he's standing frozen and peers up at him in concern. ]

Are you alright? Would you like to come sit down?
justclaws: (actually i did sleep in a hedge)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-08 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah--!

[That was absolutely not a scream. Or a yelp. Or anything like that.

[HE IS VERY TENSE RIGHT NOW, OKAY.

[Didn't quite lose his grip on the umbrella, though. This is good. Now all he has to do is calm down enough to react. Okay. React properly. With some degree of decorum. It is probably okay to sit down now, though, and that is good too because he feels like he is about ready to collapse. Kija sits, a little more heavily than he might have liked. He meets Yona's gaze.]

Thank you, Princess.

[Phew. Breathe. He can bear this for her sake.]

You must not worry about me.

[ With him seated once more, she sinks down beside him with a sympathetic look and pats his knee. ]

You're welcome, Kija. And how can I not worry about you? You certainly look as if you're not having very much fun. I know you're not very fond of anything involving bugs, even if they are ones such as these. You didn't need to force yourself to come tonight.
justclaws: (oh no - a cat stuck in a tree)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-09 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It is...

[He wants to say it's no trouble, except - well, here he is huddled beneath an umbrella, trying to make himself as small as possible, trying to make sure his hands are tucked beneath it. Kija cannot lie to her, not when the truth is that obvious: even if he were any good at it, it simply wouldn't be respectful.]

I could not leave you out here alone, Princess. What if something were to happen?

[Like, oh... fires. The unquiet dead. Whatever happened to cause the devastation he had seen when he arrived. That kind of thing.

[How could he simply sit at home, and assume she would be safe?]

Celebrations, in this world... do not always seem go as planned.

[And this one involves bugs, Princess.

[Bugs.]

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-09 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ She had noticed that, Kija. She'd thought that was the point, actually. ]

Not go as planned? What do you mean? [ She'd missed all those, in fact, with the exception of the fire.

But certainly nothing could go wrong with fireflies, Kija. Just look how pretty they are. ]

And I don't think this counts as alone, does it? There's so many others here. I'm sure I could manage if you wanted to go home a little early. I hardly want to make you unhappy by staying out here when they make you so uncomfortable.
justclaws: (nope.jpeg)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Does she truly not know?

[Kija could try to - to lie, as if that were no wrong; he could evade the question: not to the Princess, though. Never to her.]

Oh... there were disturbances, at some of the gatherings before. Perhaps ayakashi are drawn to crowds. I believe they were all on the Near Shore, though. I am sure there is nothing to worry about this time.

[Bugs.

[Bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs just that]

And I could never simply leave you, Princess. If I were at home right now, all I would do is come here.
darkestbefore: color happy (070)

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ She hums thoughtfully for a moment as she considers that. She doesn't have much experience with ayakashi as of yet, but that sounded logical enough to her. ]

Well, they do need to feed, and that seems to be their preferred source, yes? [ Isn't that why they were meant to protect people from them?

Still, her smile softens at his confession and she shifts slightly to lean against his side, trying to think of a way to distract him from his discomfort. ]

Very well, then, Kija. If you're certain. How have things been at your temple? I haven't had the chance to ask you, with how hectic things have been lately.
justclaws: (query syncope)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Certainly. I...

[Should I be moving away?

[She seems very - close, all of a sudden, close enough that Kija can almost - almost, they've got wings who let these things learn to fly?! - stop worrying about the insects. At least it is mercifully dark, and his cloak is high enough about his face that she might miss the flush that has crept to his cheeks. She is close enough he can feel the warmth of her, the weight of her presence at his side. It does - does not seem right that he should want this, find this comforting.

[He focuses on the question. It is the safest thing here--

[And yet he cannot seem to offer her anything but a question in return.]

Princess, do you object to what we are to you?
darkestbefore: color happy (185)

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-13 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She might have been a little more aware that her closeness might be making him almost as uncomfortable as the bugs - if for a different reason - but the alcohol she'd had earlier was still making her feel warm and fuzzy and it felt good to lean against him. ]

Hmm? [ his question gets a thoughtful blink before she glances up at him again, already trying to come up with an answer. ] What do you mean? As the sacred dragons? Why do you ask?
justclaws: (and nothing ever happens)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-13 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
As that, yes.

[Kija hardly knows where the thought came from.

[The parallels are... Well, they are present. Far from exact, but close enough to make for uncomfortable thinking. It brings home, once again, how truly remarkable a person the princess must be, to accept and to carry all that she must bear.]

Does it trouble you that we must serve you? You did not ask for this any more than any of us wished for shinki.
darkestbefore: color happy (128)

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-14 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her lips quirk softly at that before she gives a sigh and tips her head back, staring up at the dancing lights of the fireflies that float lazily overhead. ]

I don't know. I can't say that I see it as the same. It was different, back home. Yes, I came to seek each of you out of my own need, because I had great need of you. But serving me... I came with a request for aid, for you to lend me your strength in protection. Had any one of you said no or refused the request, I would have continued on. I think I would have been sadder for it, because I can't deny that upon meeting each of you, I felt as drawn to you as you all seemed to be to me. But I wanted it to be your choice, to come or not. I knew I was asking no easy thing of you, of any of you.

If anything, I am indebted to each of you for agreeing to help me, for protecting me as you have.

The Heavens... it did not give anyone that choice. It gave none of us the chance to say yes or no. If it needed help so desperately, surely there would have been people who would have come to the gods' aid. Perhaps the Heavens do not understand how to ask for help in turn, even though they are intended to answer the same for those who pray to them.

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank goodness for that.

[Kija slumps forward, the umbrella slipping slightly in his grasp.

[Different. It really is different. He is not simply imagining it, hoping for it, clinging to the thought that what their own Gods had asked for had been quite another matter to what they were called to here. That his misgivings, his uncertainties and doubts, are something more than the simple products of his own failings, that they would fall away if he could only be more like his master: she did not feel this way. Whatever the circumstances, for all he would feel far easier if he could simply close his eyes and wish himself anywhere but here, Kija is comforted all the same.]

I thought it foolish to complain, considering all you bear. Please forgive me for thinking so, but I believed if I could only be more like you, perhaps things would grow easier. I know you see us as far more than tools. Yet that would seem to be how the Heavens of this world would desire us to see shinki, as if it were more than chance that we were not numbered among them.

[How do they decide? And why, having decided, would they change their minds?]

I was, before. I wish I could recall that time.

Kija?

[ the fervor of that statement draws a quick glance from her, Yona drawn quite abruptly out of her thoughts on the matter to study him in confusion when he slumps forward.

When he explains, her expression softens and she shakes her head. ]
I have never once seen any of you as tools, and I would never. You are all far too precious to me for that and gifts from the gods aside, you are each unique as my friends. None of this is exactly easy, is it? I wish I could make it more so, but I confess...

[ She trails off for a moment, her gaze instinctively seeking out Hak's form across the clearing, sadness flaring visibly across her face before she manages to hide it once more. ]

I'm a little at a loss on how to do that, at the moment.
justclaws: (is that wise?)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
They ask too much.

[The demand to think such a thing of a stranger - to have them stripped bare of all associations and thrust at you, like it or not, as something to use: that is bad enough. The fact that Ao was furious about it almost made it easier. He understood. Better that than a happy slave, someone to creep about on tiptoe and speak of in whispers, or not at all, for fear of disrupting that happy sense of complacency, the unquestioning acceptance of something that should be railed against.

[But a friend? What would it feel like, to be expected to think like that about Jae-Ha? About Hak?]

They take too much. I cannot believe it is necessary.

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-21 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
We don't understand enough. [ She frowns fiercely, her fingers curling into fists in her lap. ] We don't know why they have done this, and why they choose to do it in this way. Although I cannot imagine any reason good enough to ever explain the method for how they have brought us here. Especially...

[ She trails off, flicking a quick gaze once more at Hak meaningfully before glancing back to meet Kija's gaze. ]

I cannot think of a reason that would warrant this being necessary, but there is still so much that is unknown about all this.
justclaws: (if we built this large wooden badger)

[personal profile] justclaws 2017-06-25 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes feel I would be easier about this if only I knew who we served...

[As to the rest of it: Yes. Exactly that.

[He does not miss the way her eyes dart over toward Hak, nor is it surprising. The sheer weight of the history that they share must hang heavy upon the Princess, knowing that she dare not breathe a word about it. It is difficult enough, terrible enough, to know he must hide from his brothers. He cannot imagine what it must be for her to deny a life spent by Hak's side.]

Can we be sure that we do the right thing? I do not doubt that the Ayakashi are dangerous. But what do the Heavens here want? Can they not share that much, at least?
darkestbefore: color happy (116)

[personal profile] darkestbefore 2017-06-25 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems they cannot. If the Heavens are even the ones responsible for this. From what I have observed and discovered, it seems even the older gods who have been here long before us are baffled by what is happening as the rest of us.

Regardless of what they want of us, the responsibilities we've been entrusted with here are important in their own right. Protecting our shinki, stopping the ayakashi, aiding those who pray to us for help... whatever motives behind our presence exist, they cannot make those bad.

[ She does her best to muster a smile for him, reaching out to lay her hand on his arm. ]

I'm grateful that I at least have you to talk about this with. If not for you and Zeno... [ She has no idea what she'd have done if she'd arrived here to find them all shinki with no memory of her or each other. ] I hope, perhaps, that there might be some way to restore what has been taken from them. But I doubt it will be easy.
