006 | High School Debut

Who: Everyone!
What: Substitute teaching
When: All day April 5
Where: A large public school in Tokyo
Summary: There are too many teachers sick and the Far Shore residents need to help fill in!

For some reason or another, many teachers have gotten sick just as the new school year is starting! In a panic, the school is seeking out every substitute teacher they can find, which is still not enough, and so the gods have to step in as reinforcements. And the Heavens are insisting on Far Shore residents helping strictly because this sickness seems so darn suspicious.

So anyone who looks old enough is being asked to step in as a substitute teacher and anyone who looks young enough is being asked to blend in as a new student, all to help the school and find out what exactly is causing this mysterious illness plaguing only the teachers of this school. There are many subjects open to teach and all Far Shore residents are expected to act as if they properly belong in this school while conducting their investigation. That means you'll have to teach properly or attend classes, depending on which role you've taken on.

Some gods might even find it useful to try and get information out of students by possessing one of their own, therefore guaranteeing the trust of the others around them. It's all up to you how you choose to investigate!

Newcomers will find the following note in their pockets as they are transferred to the school:

Greetings and apologies for the strange introduction.

I am sure you have many questions and concerns, but you have appeared at a very inconvenient time. Please attempt to help us, if you can, and we will reward you to the best of our abilities.

If you have any questions, you can seek out the counselor. Too many students underestimate what a good counselling session can do towards helping to alleviate their fears and uncertainties.

Classes

Being a big school, there are dozens of different subjects available. As teachers, you can practically teach anything you would like to, and as students you are facing a constant stream of completely different kinds of information. Maybe the school needs to tone it down a bit on how many different subjects they offer...

Hallways

The hallways are always a great place to mingle and get to know the other students in the school. You'll see all sorts in the hallways, ranging from the beautiful girls being followed by their fanboys all the way to the delinquents who are promptly making their way away from the classrooms for the rest of the day. Hopefully somebody around here will be able to give you a heads up as to what's going on.

Lunch

Lunchtime is the easiest time to gather gossip and information. Whether you are staying in the classroom with a bento or heading to the cafeteria to wrestle for some bread or spending your lunch in the faculty room with the rest of the not-sick teachers, you will find that both the students and the faculty are more prone to chatting during lunch. And a lot of them talk about a curse laid on the school because of the late principal...

Counselling

Surprisingly enough, there is a white-robed shinki in the counselling office of the school, and the golden chrysanthemum of Amaterasu can be found on her tunic as well as on the door to her small personal office. Oddly, all of the other students and faculty keep passing the door by, but the counselling shinki simply continues to smile gently all the same.

FINAL BOSS

Turns out there is something causing the illness in the teachers, and it's an exceedingly large ayakashi, one so large that no single god could possibly take it down. You'll have to all work together to weaken it enough for the rending to work on it.

The battle for the FINAL BOSS will be posted on the OOC date of July 17, all threads involving destroying him should go there when it is posted. All other events leading up to the FINAL BOSS battle should slowly build to figuring out that an ayakashi is at work.

Classes

[Being born and raised a spy, Ayumu's no stranger to undercover work but this assignment is turning out to be more difficult than anticipated. As a woman of limited education from the past, there are very few subjects she's qualified to teach in this kind of setting. But she can look the part, at least. Today, she's wearing modern clothes - a modest blouse, skirt short enough not to hinder her movement too much, and her hair's pulled back into a disheveled bun.

After seeing the home economics room being occupied by someone else, Ayumu settles on taking over the calligraphy classroom instead. She's quite skilled at writing with a brush after all and really it's her only other option.

Most students don't seem to be paying attention, however. When she is noticed at all, it's usually by teenage boys more interested in staring at her figure than the lesson but Ayumu carries on as if she doesn't even notice.]

Lunch

[As soon as lunch period starts, Ayumu makes a quick retreat to the faculty room to eat her bento. Most of the teachers don't notice her, despite her sitting directly in their midst, making it much easier to listen in on their chatter. Talk of a curse laid upon the school catches her ear. The late principal sounds like a person of interest for sure. She listens more closely as she chows down on her sashimi, hoping to catch more details about the late principal and more about what this curse actually is.]

Hallways

[After classes end for the day, Ayumu switches tactics. She vaguely remembers being told how to do this so she tries it now. She rests a hand on the shoulder of a cute girl with braids who's on cleanup duty. Ayumu's form fades as her consciousness shifts into the girl's body. This is a very weird experience but she can't deny it's certainly useful.

Ayumu, in the girl's body, leaves the classroom to the protests of the remaining cleanup crew, and starts strolling down the hallway, listening to the chatter of the lingering students. Maybe she'll learn something more about what's happening here this way.]

[ The class Genos has been following ended at calligraphy class. At first Genos expected a chatting students, and perhaps some more information to eavesdrop on.

But lo and behold, he actually gets immersed in the task. It's close to the technical drawing, something he seems to have a knack for. Following instructions, number and direction of strokes. Strangely relaxing.

Despite getting all the kanji well, he's holding the brush totally wrong. It's not even that his artificial hands are not capable of holding it correctly, they have full range of movement as a human hands after all. He just missed the explanation of how to correctly hold the brush and went with what is most comfortable for him. ]

[Ayumu's strolling through the rows, surveying everyone's work over their shoulder. As she approaches one student, Ayumu pauses, looking curiously at his arms. Like many things, she's never seen anything like this either but she's gradually becoming used to oddities beyond her comprehension by now. As intrigued as she is by them, Ayumu's far too polite to stare so instead she studies his work.

Despite him holding the brush incorrectly, he's doing a pretty good job with the kanji but she's sure he could do even better if he held it properly.]

Oh, you're holding the brush the wrong way. You're supposed to hold it like this.

[Ayumu demonstrates with the brush she's been keeping on her to use for examples.]

[ Genos is snapped out of his focus and looks up to the teacher. Is she from Far Shore? Or is just a teacher diligent enough to notice him due to the mistake? ]

Like this? [ he changes his hold on the brush, from near the bristles to closer on the top. Once again he glances at teacher hand and corrects his thumb ]

I think I got it. [ And he takes a clean sheet and places first stroke-- ] oh ...it's harder now.

[ --the stroke is totally off its mark now. The line is wobbly instead of even, and the end of the stroke is not pointy enough. ]

You'll get the hang of it. It just takes practice.

[The way he's holding the brush is good so maybe another demonstration is in order. Ayumu dips her brush in some ink and begins writing the kanji on a blank sheet of paper. Her strokes are flawless and smooth. It's clear that she's very experienced with his method of writing.]

I'm a little surprised you're putting this much effort into the class considering what we're really here for.

[His appearance looks unlike any of the Near Shore residents that's Ayumu's seen. It's a safe bet he's here to investigate as well.]

[ Woops, he just got caught! It's the drawing and writing aspect combined that got him, really ]

You're very convincing as a teacher. [ he claims sheepishly, following her example. He's getting hang on correct holding the brush, but since it requires completely different pressure control it's almost like learning how to write again. But the successful strokes do indeed look much better than what one can do with holding brush like a pen. ]

Have you found anything?

[Ayumu smiles a bit at the compliment. It's nice to have her work appreciated.]

Only that the faculty is hoping everyone will get well and come back soon. And there seems to be a curse on the school that's possibly the work of the last prinicipal. How about you?

[She takes a moment to check his work. Much better.]

You're starting to get it now! Very good.

A curse? [ he looks up ] I haven't heard that one.

But it might be related to what I saw on scans. [ he pauses then adds explanation ] I can scan people's vitals. It's basic enough, but according to it heat signatures of some students were weird.

Like something was sapping the body heat out of them.

[Now that is interesting information and far more helpful than most of what Ayumu's been able to discover on her own.]

Hmm. That's good to know.

[And though she might not understand how he's able to do it, Ayumu knows what vitals are and how helpful that type of ability is. It's useful information to keep in mind for later.]

It could be related to the curse. Curses are tied to spirits in stories, aren't they?

[It's a shame Saito's not here. She could use his knowledge of ghosts right now.]

[ That's like the missing part got into place. Genos puts the brush away. ]

Correct. And since the cause for whatever is going on here must be supernatural of origin, there might be a connection there. [ he's thinking fast and speaking even faster, not minding if he gets repetitive or not. ]

Teachers are disappearing because of sickness. Whatever is behind that curse, is probably preying on students now. Why it removed the teachers first, though. If the curse was linked to principal office, it would be obvious the people closest to that office would be first victims. Which is principal and other teachers who come to visit.

[Ayumu listens intently. She understands how investigations work and how it helps to just review the facts and information one has gathered After a moment of mulling over the facts, she speaks up, tone thoughtful.]

Think it could be an ayakashi?

[She hasn't noticed anything particularly unusual in that department yet. At least, nothing aside from the usual oddities she's grown accustomed to seeing.]

It could be a deliberate maneuver to get opposition out of the way if the students are the true targets.

[She's just guessing though.]

[ They're both at it, guessing. ]

That would suggest even more. Intent. If the curse is just a force, it affects the closest to it, and then spreads. But if someone is targeting the teachers, to get to the students, they must have some goal on mind

[ it's a scary thought. He always assumed ayakashi to be instinct-driven spirits, similar to animals. But this amount of planning would suggest a much higher intelligence ]

In ghost stories, they're intelligent, I think. I don't know much about them but...

[She trails off a moment, considering.]

Some of the ayakashi talk, don't they?

[That implies some degree of intelligence. At least, to her. If they're capable of speech, why not planning, too?]
