013 | How To Save A Life

Who: Everyone!
What: Investigating suicides
When: Afternoon June 16
Where: The Near Shore (Tokyo)
Summary: Investigation and reporting
Warnings: Talk of suicide/suicide ideation.

There has been a very sudden, very disturbing increase in the number of suicides committed in Tokyo recently. While this sometimes happens for naturally occurring reasons, the Heavens have a suspicion that something is wrong here. So they are enlisting the help of any gods and shinki that are willing to give their time, including newly arrived gods and shinki who will be informed of their situation before being directed anywhere.

It's up to you whether you are interested in helping the Heavens out, they only want those who are willing to lend a hand. Though if your god/shinki forces you along with them, that should be fine too.

Briefing

The briefing of the situation will be happening at the Meeting Hall of the gods, orders coming directly from Suijin herself. After the explanation is given, gods and shinki will be given supplies to help them, including books on how to help people in bad situations, water bottles, and some light snacks to take with them. This could go all night, so make sure you stock up on what you need before you take off.

The Streets

Streets that are usually bustling and loud are somber and awkward now. Many of the people seem to be down in the dumps and those who aren't are so put off by the situation that they are keeping mostly quiet. When approached, the ones who are obviously depressed will talk only of how life isn't worth it and how they wish it was all over. Others will comment on how confusing this all is coming from the people that are depressed. NPC interaction with mods will be available, but you are welcome to control your own NPCs as well.

Ayakashi

Perhaps unsurprisingly, those who spend enough time talking to the people in Tokyo will suddenly realize that there are a number of ayakashi attaching themselves to each of the affected people. That's right, multiple ayakashi connected to each person. They will have to be destroyed to free the person from their depressing thoughts, but there sure are a lot of them around. And, to make matters worse, a very aggressive, noisy kind of ayakashi will show up randomly to interfere with everything. They require teamwork to defeat and are hell-bent on attacking gods and shinki rather than humans.

Reporting In

Reports about what you have seen and who you have saved and what you have destroyed can be taken back to the Meeting Hall where Suijin will be waiting to be briefed. Those who bring her information are likely to be rewarded, though they might not realize just what kinds of rewards they are receiving.

In Summary:
  • Get informed
  • Go do some fieldwork
  • Find and defeat some ayakashi
  • Save some lives
  • Report back in to Suijin
  • Have fun~

Briefing

[Omi isn't one to turn down anything to make one more prepared, but he eyes the books in his arms somewhat dubiously.]

Do we really have time to read these before leaving for The Near Shore?

The Streets

[Wow, this is a depressing scene. It's so weird seeing the city like this, quiet and relatively still despite the numbers of people out and about. One of the city residents sits on the curb with his head hanging low, and he mumbles something unintelligible.]

What did he say?

Ayakashi

[Well it's a good thing he brought some pure water with him! The ayakashi are really all over the place this time. Helping the people is proving difficult though, as one of the ayakashi keeps buzzing around and coming after him. He finally hits it with a splash of water-- and it makes a beeline for a nearby Far Shore resident instead.]

Look out!

Reporting In

[It looks like there's a bit of a line to meet with Suijin. To help pass the time, Omi looks at the person standing behind him to strike up a conversation.]

What a weird mission... I've never seen so many ayakashi at once before. Have you?

Briefing

[The explanation of what they're here to do seems straightforward enough, but as a newcomer, Luna doesn't really know anyone here yet. So during the short time they have before everyone goes out to investigate, she'll introduce herself with a polite bow of the head to anyone who seems receptive.]

I'm pleased to meet you. My name is Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. It seems we'll be working together tonight.

The Streets

[Luna has only just arrived in Takamagahara, scarcely having enough time to get used to her new situation before she's being asked to help with the rash of suicides. Thankfully, she's received at least the basics and met with her assigned shinki, and soothing the spirits of the downtrodden is hardly new to her. So, with characteristic resolve, she heads out into the city to try to find and talk to some of the depressed people.]

I'm here to help. Please... tell me what troubles you.

Ayakashi

Rend!

[It would appear Luna's gotten herself into a bit of a spot. After some investigating, she's found someone with multiple noise ayakashi attached to them, and she's trying to fight them all on her own. Her soulless shinki, Hanaki, is at her side in the form of a trident, but no matter how many times they rend them apart the ayakashi put themselves back together and renew their assault. Luna's not one to give up in the face of adversity, but the situation is beginning to look grim.]

Why...? Why won't they stay defeated?

Briefing

[Having just come from the training everyone was invited to- and yet still having found time to change into a spare hat? Chikusa why- the shinki is quick to start gathering the supplies he needs. However, once he's been handed the book and he glances at the cover of it...]

[There's a pause. He looks faintly uncomfortable in that "what do" sort of way.]

....Would it be easier to just... make them go unconscious and tie them up so they don't do it...?

[chikusa no]

The Streets / Ayakashi V.1

[It hasn't taken long for Chikusa at all to track down someone being troubled by the ayakashi... partially because they're practically covered in the things. No wonder the mortal looks weighed down, because there must be five of those things on them.]

[Since he's on his own, it's out of the question for Chikusa to take them out himself, although one must assume he's contacted his god about his discovery, so he's decided to help in a different way. Anyone who comes across him will find that he's trying to trail the afflicted person, and with no small amount of skill either- clearly used to stalking and staking out things. It's also possible to find him taking pictures of the person, either with the Heaven approved phone or a small digital camera.]

[At some point, one might hear him mutter.]

Why so many...

Ayakashi V.2

[It's typical that things can't go right for long, something Chikusa soon learns. Others of the Far Shore will soon hear a loud commotion and, shortly after, see it- Chikusa ducking and dodging out of the way of a pair of Noise Ayakashi the size of small birds. They are after him with a vengeance, and their demanding speed has meant it's been a little difficult for him to erect a line barrier for protection without risking getting hit.]

[If there was even just one distraction for these things...]

briefing.

Honestly. What a miserable first assignment.

[ William cannot say that he feels anything about the current assignment beyond mild discomfort. He breathes in deep and lets out a long sigh. Here he is a sudden dead man, bound to the service of a fanatical god, and his first task is to find out why people are killing themselves? ]

There certainly are a wide variety of reasons. I suppose that it's better to be well-versed in what we are to encounter than go into any situation uninformed. [ Taking one of the books, he flips it open to start reading. He has no memory of his past life, after all; he has nothing that he could tell anyone as to why they should continue living. What does a man who is dead have to say to the living? Very little, if one were to ask him, and it seems like they are. ]

the streets.

[ With consoling book in hand, he listens to what the people have to say with a blank expression. He doesn't wonder if he ever thought this way, because it doesn't matter. It's mildly irritating to hear them complain about how life is not worth living, though. Adjusting his glasses, he decides that he will start "reasonably" before attempting to carry out the suggestions from the book. ]

I am William T. Spears, Shinki of Grell Sutcliffe. That is, I am a servant of a God. Please, do not look impressed. [ And, indeed, the humans do not seem to appear to be looking so but rather, they look even more tired. ] This is not a means to convert you into following her. Though, I suppose that is part of my duties. However, that is not the reason I am speaking to you now.

The reason that I am speaking to you now is to let you know that the Gods of the world are concerned for your lives. Every one of them is concerned. [ He allows that to settle in before he carries on with anything else that he has to say. ]

reporting in [closed to Grell Sutcliffe]

There is some reward for what I have done, but I am your Shinki so it seems far more appropriate to have you report it, Grell Sutcliffe.

[ His suit is badly damaged from the fighting, but he does not appear too winded or tired. More miffed about how his clothes are no longer wearable, if anything. He adjusts his glasses -- pushing on the bridge lightly to have them rest differently on his nose. ]

Any reward is to be yours, is that not right? So, please consider me an extension of your own will. I shall take a rest until you have completed reporting into Sujin. [ His tone remains as cold and aloof as ever as he takes a step back. ] Please let me know when you are ready to have me begin my report.

✖✖ Don't mention it.
[Three days, more or less. Work had quickly shifted from busy to dire. It-- startles him, actually, that this surge in people taking their own lives has caught the attention of those above him but maybe it shouldn't. Of course this was unnatural in a way it wasn't before, the innate right people have to decide what they do with themselves was being tampered with in this extremely vile manner.

(It startles him more that though he's fighting back a yawn, he seems to be losing.)

He'd held no leads on why it was happening; his days had been reduced to standing on the front lines alongside his lady Ixtab. And now here he was, with no goddess at his side and... a ways off from the action. From the living. From the screeching ayakashi. In front of a-- coffee shop. Of all things. He senses his new companion before he sees them (when had his eyes closed? and if white eyes weren't unsettling enough, now they're a hint red-rimmed) and in his ever too-serious manner, he gestures inside to the nearly-empty place.]
Want anything? [There might be concern there.]

✖✖ Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
[He can't help it- even if the humans are floating past and ahead of him like lifeless rafts (driven by the foul ayakashi he can't touch in this form) Neji's gaze continues to slip upwards. Not at the sky, quite, but at the tops of buildings.

It's a relief to find them empty if just for a moment, with no shadowed, defeated body rocking back on their heels and readying to plunge down, isn't it?

He bumps shoulders with a passer-by and whether it's accidental or on purpose is up in the air (ha) though Neji avoids contact with the snake-like demon winding to constrict the woman's throat, and he voices a clear apology. And he hears the woman laughs mirthlessly over how here she believed she was invisible to the world. Funny, that. So what would happen if he follows her, invisible as he is? If he looks to where the ayakashi are coming to her from, will he find--

nope. He finds noise, the vicious little pests of ayakashi charging him. Again.

For fuck's sake--]

[Ixtab's Temple -- Closed to Hakkai and Neji]

[Shortly after Hakkai's arrival, Yuri's barely had time to really do much except, you know, work. She's the Goddess of Suicides, after all, so the sudden upswing of them has her working way overtime and running on cat naps and coffee to keep her going.

There's always the possibility of ignoring them, but she can't bring herself to do so at all, even though it's exhausting and painful in more than one way.

So it's no surprise she ends up falling asleep in random places once she drags herself home. She just wanted to sit at the holy water pool's edge, letting the sound of running water soothe her; however, as she tucks her knees close and rests her arms on them, her head begins to sink onto her arms... Yuri looks dangerously close to toppling over and into the pool or something save her. This is probably neither the first nor the last time this has happened.
]

[The Streets A - OTA]

[Out on the streets, there's a lone figure dressed in some pretty fancy robes (sans headdress) wandering around. Honestly, despite the robes, it wouldn't be held against you if you thought she was one of the depressed humans-- she has that look about her, you know? There's a distant look in her eyes that makes it look lie she's about to start crying and a sad, serious expression.

She's also very pale and looks exhausted and unsteady, her gait wobbling and forcing her to lean against a near-by building to gain her footing again after a minute or so. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. Get it together, she seems to be saying, but opening her eyes again and not giving into the temptation to just fall asleep standing up is really hard.
]

[The Streets B -- OTA]

[There's an older, middle-aged woman talking to the younger, robed girl now, on the ledge of a building. She talks about wanting to give, about how helpless life is. She talks about some disease she has, something incurable, she's going to die anyhow. She seems a little different from the other depressed people, but not by much, ad the girl just listens quietly.

Perhaps yoo saw them walking up here and got curious or whatever, but either way Yuri pays no mind to the new companion. She's got a job to do, after all.
]

You've made up your mind?

I have.

[Yuri is silent a moment before nodding. She reaches out and touches the woman's arm, and then retreats a few steps.]

Alright.

[Wait, is she really just going to let this happen?? Apparently so, because Yuri makes no move to stop the woman as she moves to start climbing the little fence to jump. Yuri just watches her with a carefully set expression.]

[Reporting In - Closed to Suijin eventually]

[She approaches the woman in charge, a mix of feeling swirling in her. On one hand she's a little irritated to have not been consulted about this all, but on the other hand it all got taken care of eventually and it a relatively quick manner, so she can't totally complain.

Still... She waits until someone else is done speaking before she briskly walks up, her robes fluttering about her in her quick steps.
]

Lady Suijin. [Might as well be polite, she supposes; it can't hurt, after all. She bows lightly before straightening.] About the suicides... [She trails in a sort of prompting manner- Is Suijin free to talk?]

[A: The Streets]

[Shun stayed at the briefing for as short a time as he could get away with while still knowing what was going on, and as such, he's out on the streets from fairly early on. He might not be the most polite of people, but he knows how to ask straightforward questions. It's not long before the pattern becomes obvious - the visibly depressed people who speak only of ending it, the onlookers who seem only affected by the worry of seeing the people around them sink into such a sad state. While he is still gathering information, Shun makes a point of keeping an eye on as many of the potential victims as possible, and as he turns away from another of the concerned bystanders, he notices one of them straying dangerously close to the traffic on the nearby road.

Darting over, he yanks them out of the way, setting them back onto the sidewalk, but he throws the road a wary glance and lets out a long hiss through his teeth as he looks over the number of affected people on this sidewalk alone.]

If we can't figure out what the hell is causing this soon, no amount of vigilance is going to save all of these people. [However blunt his tone is, there's a clear note of bitterness to it - he wants this solved before anyone else ends up dead tonight.]

--

[B: Ayakashi]

[It's a little while before Shun notices the clusters of ayakashi clinging to the affected civilians, seeming to weigh them down in body and soul with just their presence, but when he does he has to wonder how he hadn't noticed something so clear earlier on. Unfortunately, he doesn't currently have his shinki with him, though contacting him is just about the first thing on his mind when the spread of the ayakashi becomes clear. One hand goes down to touch at the flask of blessed water on his belt - it wouldn't do more than repel even ayakashi that small, but that might just mean they scatter, and when he doesn't know if that will actually free the victims of their influence, it's not worth the risk.

At this point, though, he's certain he can't keep an eye on all these people on his own, not closely enough to stop any rash decisions. While he'll be keeping an eye out in particular for god and shinki pairs, any vigilant-looking person in the area will likely be approached by the god in his sweeping blue coat, his bearing as intense as would be expected in a situation like this.]

These people need an eye kept on them until those ayakashi are gotten rid of. I can't cover this whole area by myself. [He's telling far more than he is asking, because he can't imagine there's many people here who'd choose to split hairs about it in this situation.]

--

[C: Reporting In, closed to Suijin]

[When it comes to making reports, Shun's not interested in striking up conversation with any of the others who might be trying - if they're all providing the same information, it's going to be of less use. So it is that he waits on the sidelines until the chance arises to speak to Suijin directly, approaching her with little more than a cursory nod of recognition. As far as the high-ranking gods go, he's somewhat appreciative that it's Suijin handling this operation rather than any of the others.]

If you still want reports, I can give you what I've gathered so far.

[A: Briefing]

[As soon as Maria hears what's going on on the Near Shore, her drive to help sparks up even further than normal. People being driven to death by an unknown power...it's a horrible thought, and Maria stares through the pages of the book on helping those in bad sitations with her mouth set into a hard line.]

Is investigating really all we can do for them...?

--

[B: The Streets]

[As much as Maria would dearly love to be able to save all these people herself, it doesn't work the same here as it does in her world. Still, she's committed to stopping as many as possible from falling victim to their thoughts, and though she's not unaffected by the situation herself, she's been going between the victims and trying to give them something to think about in-between asking them about what's going on.

It's not too hard to catch her in the middle of it, especially in those cases where she ends up in the middle of the sidewalk, smiling in wan reassurance at someone who still looks absolutely downcast.]

Just think about it a little longer - sleep on it, even, tomorrow could mean something new... [If there's anyone from the Far Shore nearby at the time, they're likely to get a significant glance and a mouthed help me to come over and get behind her point as well.]

--

[C: Ayakashi]

[Given Maria has two shinki to her name, she stands a better chance than some of at least one of them showing up when she contacts them for help. However, she can hardly expect them to show up immediately, and so she focuses on what she might be able to do better - supporting others in their efforts to destroy the ayakashi themselves. While she knows well enough a paired god and shinki are the only way to get rid of these permanently, she can't believe there are no powers here to at least stop them for the moment, and she'll approach anyone trying to help out with a look of fierce determination on her face.]

Is there any way I can help? We need to at least stop these things from spreading any further.

Post Briefing

[Lara Croft is not one to miss an information session, and this one seems particularly important. Prepared as always, she arrives wearing jacket with a glitter of what looks like mail armour beneath her shirt, and a golf bag laden with weapons. She listens to the explanation and meanders over to take some of the offered items, packing them into her bag before taking a seat at a table and beginning to check her things. Starting with a pistol she methodically begins breaking it down and cleaning it, while a tall shinki looks on.

Anyone Lara knows gets an encouraging nod, a wave, or some other gesture of acknowledgement. And anyone that seems a little out of their depth? Well, they get a warm smile.]

Ready for this?

Streets, maybe leading to Ayakashi

[Once out, her gear fully checked and stowed, Lara hits the streets. She doesn't want to let anyone go wandering off alone, so she's sticking close to groups of Heaven's servants. Her attention seems unusually focused tonight, and her demeanor almost unnaturally calm. It might seem unnerving to some, but Lara can hardly be bothered to care.

Pointing to a group of people, she nods.]

Let's go talk to them, see if they've seen anything.

[ briefing. ]

[ While her shinki is paying attention, and delving into the provided text, Grell is-- well, she's distracted by just about everything else.

She never was very good at playing the good student. It's easy enough to hone in on the details that sound most important, but maintaining her attention for long requires a great deal of stimulation, so to speak. Now, if it were a dramatic monologue that they were listening to, or good prose given to read, this would be an entirely different story. Alas.

There's been a great deal on her mind, besides! Details of becoming reacquainted with her heartthrob aside, she now had to adjust to the sensation of feeling for two. Pregnant in emotion, perhaps? That's quite distracting!

Stretching her arms above her head, the redhead then deflates back into her seat with an airy sigh. ]

Suicide, is it? I'd managed that once. You might believe such a thing would make me an apt advocate for the cause, but I can't say that I entirely regret it!

[ the streets / ayakashi. ]

Oh, now this is what I've been waiting for.

[ The engine of a pretty red chainsaw roars to life in her hands, as she takes to a sprint toward the pesky ayakashi that have been ailing her-- a small flock of birds.

She does manage to slice through one with the blade, and the sudden fray of feathers manages to startle the others away momentarily... yet, even then, the creature manages to reform. ]

--Ah?

[ With a stubbornly furrowed brow, she reels back to try again. They're better at dodging her attack this time, but she eventually catches another - only at the same results. ]

Oh, won't you just die already?!

[ Someone, please tell her this is not how it's done. ]

[ reporting in. ]

[ Well, Grell had managed to learn her lesson, after all. More than likely, she has a particular shinki to thank for that.

That isn't to say she hadn't tried her best! Clothing mussed and dirtied, it's clear that she's been in a tussle, yet she's here victorious!

And while she's waiting for her turn, the death god will be doing her best to fix her makeup. ]

Briefing

[Would everyone be able to be snapped out of suicidal depression that easily? The briefing almost makes it seem so. In a bag, Mikazuki is assembling what looks like a hasty care package. Not only are the necessities that the gods have advised on, but also some stuffed animals, his favorite tea blends, cookies and various treats.]

What else am I missing? [He murmurs to himself. Any suggestions on what to go in the care package?]

The streets

Well, before you get to killing yourself, why don't we have a small chat first? I was looking for someone to share some drinks with. [At god knows o'clock. In the middle of who knows where. Because spontaneous forced invitations are a great idea to stop someone from killing themselves.

Of course, the more the merrier. Mikazuki beckons to any god or shinki who might or might not be willing to join in.]

Would you like some as well? I have plenty to share.

Ayakashi

[When there's suicidal tendencies, of course there's ayakashi involved. When he first came here himself, it was the same, except they sprang out of chocolates. It seems like they have caught onto their plans, and boy are they annoying.]

My my. They are persistent aren't they?

[ OOC: I’m fine with switching to action! ]

i. The Streets
Talking people out of their depression is thirsty work, and should you betray any signs of thirst or fatigue after attending to one of the many mortals in need you’ll get a nice cold bottle of water held up to you by yours truly, and he’ll even throw in a sympathetic smile for good measure.

“Here. Good work out there.”

ii. A Bridge
Talking someone from jumping off the bridge isn’t easy, and he’d tried every entreaty he can think of to keep the man from jumping off the bridge. This suicidal character is unshaven and bedraggled and reeking of alcohol, and Sanada wonders if he’s perhaps a salaryman who’d recently lost his job or even if he’s a gambler who’d lost one too many times.

Either way, it’s impossible reasoning with him as the man isn’t taking him nearly seriously enough, and before he can even cry out for him to Wait! the man drops off the bridge, and all Sanada can do is to vainly try to reach for him over the railing.

It’s a long time before that splash can be heard, and when Sanada pulls himself upright, he’s got the man’s tattered coat grasped in one hand. That’s when he notices someone nearby, and he looks up with a rueful grin, eyes swimming as he forces himself to look nonchalant and keep on smiling.

“I knew it…wouldn’t be easy.” His voice might be a little shaky.

iii. Ayakashi
He’d been running after another depressive when a swarm of ayakashi came out of nowhere, cutting him off from the person he’s trying to help as the air fills with a horrible noise. He quickly stumbles back, throwing his hands up to defend himself from the swarm, eyes darting about for an escape route before he realizes he’s cornered this time.

Shit!

[ Briefing ]
[ D2 flips through some of the books and it seems a little complicated in some cases. Some of the tings mentioned seem unfamiliar, while some seems more familiar. That's interesting, but dwelling on the reason for that is useless. ]

...There's even more stuff a person can suffer from than I thought...

[ The Streets 1 ]
[ It's good to make sure you don't stray too far from your god because while D2 apparently doesn't have much problem finding his way around the streets of Tokyo, he doesn't know if Riku can navigate properly as well.

Either way, the amount of people that look so damn gloomy is making him shiver. It's like they're possessed. Which they probably might be. ]

I'm guessing that referring them to a shrink ain't gonna cut it.

[ The Streets 2 ]
[ Now, D2 doesn't mind being dead despite not remembering how it happened. He could have killed himself for all he knows. But things like "Life isn't worth it" or "I wish it was over" sort of ticks him off a bit. Not that people that don't know him can tell because he looks and gives off the air of being as calm and friendly as ever. ]

Don't say that, I'm sure there's something, even if it's just a tv show you want to see through to the end or some kind of food you'd like to try again or a place you'd like to visit.

[ You don't need a lot to keep on living, you just need a reason, right? Who cares if it's a reason that other people might think is ridiculous. ]

[ Ayakashi ]
[ This being the first time he's actually going into a situation where he might end up in combat, one would assume that he would be a little nervous. But he is not, and when he finally notices the Ayakashi, he's a little amazed, for some reason. ]

Cool.

[ Not that it's cool that they're possessing people, or wherever it is they're doing, but it looks cool.

Of course, the low whistle and the one word attracts the attention of a different looking one, which is just great. D2 quickly sends a message to his god, and ducks out of the way of the attack, spins back toward the Ayakashi, and performs a well executed Borderline spell that stops the Ayakashi in its way.

At least he doesn't feel pressured from being in actual combat. ]

[ Reporting In ]
[ For some reason he seems way more up-beat than when they set off, his eyes sort of sparkling and his cheeks colored red with excitement. ]

That was fun, can we do do it again?

[ It's weird, how alive he felt while fighting. He never really felt dead in the first place (though how do you even feel dead?) but this had been different. It had been exciting, a thrill to be able to fight something and to kill it. (Because that's what destroying the Ayakashi is, right?) ]

[Niles keeps the books, as he's sure Leo's going to want them to read (and he's keeping these ones, thanks), tucking them into a small bag on his waist. He'll drop them off at the temple quickly before they all head out. As too much stuff will weigh him down when he's doing his abilities, he only takes a pair of water bottles.

He looks towards who he's supposed to work with and nods.]

Niles. Try not to be a total disgrace. That's my job and I do it well enough.

The Streets

[It's extremely quiet here. Far too quiet for his own liking. He comes to these streets plenty, if only to be around a crowd and feel comfortable sneaking around. It was bustling, busy and he felt happy.

Here, he fears that he was only using the crowd to make him feel better about his home situation. As being on these same streets only feels him with dread.]

...Let's get this over with.

[He shakes his head, grumbling.]

Ayakashi

[He's never been good at solo fighting these things. But for whatever reason, he's away from the rest of his group, and he does what he has to do. His throwing knives only do the job of drawing the groups of noise towards him, which gets him to narrow his eye. Shit.

He can't even recover his knives, because the path way is too dangerous. He has to quick step back, spinning around and trying to move away as quickly as possible.]

...Dammit!

[Sorry, he's not going to die. He doesn't want to retreat, but he sure as hell wants to die a lot less.]

Streets

[Hakkai has his limiters back on and his new eyepatch to match; he'd look a little piratical if it weren't for the neat business-casual clothes. He's pulled aside a young woman standing a little too close to traffic; he exchanges a few murmured words with her before she shouts, "Leave me alone!" and storms away, shoulders drawn in and purse clenched defensively in front of her body in both hands.

Hakkai looks after her, with a bewildered expression, clears his throat, and murmurs under his breath:]

I don't think I'm very good at this.

Ayakashi

[When it comes to fighting, on the other hand, Hakkai's very good indeed at what he does. Still, he's been caught on his own by three Noisy ayakashi, and while he's cutting at them with borderlines, they don't seem to be nearly as injured by those attacks as they should be. He dodges left, and rolls under an ayakashi springing at his back, and comes up against a wall with the three of them closing in.

This might be a good time for some help.]

Above the Near Shore, in the spirit realm that mortals could not perceive, floated the Valkyrie. The wind at this height swirled her skirt around her ankles and caught the long braid of her hair, tugging it out like a streamer or a flag high above the city. Heedless of such distractions, the Valkyrie concentrated, hands clasped before her, as motionless as stone as the world slowly rotated beneath her.

"--nothing worth living for. I've had it..."
"Why don't you do it, coward? Too afraid to solve your problems?"
"Is this... really the way?" "The only way."

Lenneth's eyes opened slowly.

By the Far Shore's definition, she would be too late. But no one could do anything. Spiritual Concentration, the gift that belonged to her alone, only resonated her soul with those who were about to pass into her purview. If she could sense their final moments, their fate had already been sealed. Death was inevitable. And there her duty began. Lenneth leaned forward slightly, launching herself towards one street in particular, far below.

The street was empty, save for one broken body, the pavement cracked beneath it and the spiderweb of lines slowly filly with dull red blood. The vessel was empty, its contents slipped out the way a yolk flopped limply from an egg. On the other side of the veil, in a realm of divinity and spirituality, the Valkyrie faced the man as he had appeared in life, though the dead man could not raise his head to face her.

"I killed myself," he repeated for the seventh time, and then the eighth. "I killed myself, and nothing you say can change that. I don't know what you want from me."

Lenneth regarded him with a cool, imperious look for a moment, while his shoulders shook and his hands clenched helplessly atop his thighs. Then she stepped forward, lifted a hand, and swept it outward. A great white wing appeared and unfolded from her back, flapping over his head in synch with the gesture of his arm -- and at once, the two appeared in the physical realm, with the man suddenly staring down at his former body. He slapped his hands over his face with a strangled gasp, a slight retch choked out from beneath them a moment later.

"That is the fate you so willingly adopt," the Valkyrie said, without any hint of compassion. "And yet you turn from it. You should be glad to see it. Does it say nothing to you that you are not?"

"I never wanted this." The man twisted his body, trying to pull his knees around with the force of it without ever lifting them or lowering his hands. "I didn't -- I don't --"

"You do not know what you are thinking because your thoughts were clouded and deceived." Lenneth stepped over the pool of blood to stand in front of him once more. "You lived a worthy life, which was cut short by outside trickery. It is done. It is over. Now you move on to the next stage of existence. You have heard the judgment of the Valkyrie in this matter. Will you fight it? Or will you forgive one mistake?"

"I don't..." He let his hands slip down just an inch, as he looked up at Lenneth with despair and confusion wrought all through his features. "I don't want it to end."

"But it has. What you begin now, is up to you."

The street was silent for a long minute, save for the man's miserable sniffling and the gentle rustle of the Valkyrie's skirts. Then, finally, he inhaled roughly and wetly, scrubbed a wrist over his eyes, and stood up.

Lenneth moved no muscle, made no sound or noise of her own, but from nowhere her wings unfolded again. A great flap, and then a second, and the man's spirit faded to slow white, then dissolved into a faint glimmer that rose into the feathers of the wings and vanished. As the wings themselves did, a moment later.

A) Briefing

[ Let's just say that qualms everything else aside about the entire situation—Allen is the sort to be more than a little relieved to put his own misgivings aside to help others. That can come.. later. Much later. (Thinking about it makes his head hurt.)

That said he's also had some time to calm down from what was very much a less than calm reception to the realization of where he was and why. But it helps having More Important Things to throw himself headfirst into. It helps a lot...

Although the air of politely (read: tightly wound up and shoved deep down) contained caution (and keeping-to-himself-distance) he's had up until this point ends rather suddenly when, after skeptically picking up one of the books provided to them, his expression immediately goes a little, well...

Flat. ]

"When Bad Things Happen To Good People"? [ what is this and how are they supposed to help people with it. are you serious. also why does his soul feel like it's sinking a little........... ]

B) The Streets/Ayakashi

[ Hold, friend. That corner you were about to round is going to have to wait for a moment, as there's an Exorcist-turned-God/angel/thing he isn't comfortable with clapping a firm but gentle hand on your shoulder quickly to give you pause before you just saunter out. It's habit, just since— ]

Sh—

[ One white-gloved finger to his lips, his expression is a firm kind of caution mixed with apology for his abruptness. As well as actually being a little, well... surprised. Like he's managed to startle himself a little as well in the manner of one holding their breath that something really good might be happening as well as the horrible—something so good they don't dare voice it.

Since from the moment he as well stepped into sight of the ayakashi that hang off of their human hosts, his left eye has shifted from pale grey to entirely blood red and black.

He can see... ]

Everyone is covered in them.. [ It's a little hushed as he lets go of your shoulder, still an almost awed sort of murmur to himself (shoulders back and loose, chin up but lips parted in quiet disbelief), and like he's not sure if they should avoid attracting attention of the spirits yet. ] 'Ayakashi'.

[ Like it's so familiar and yet... absolutely not. ]

Is that normal?

{The Streets}

[Is she really the best person to give people pep talks and life advice? Cardia doesn't think so, but she can hardly turn away from them either. She certainly knows the feeling of isolation and loneliness better than most people, so maybe she can at least provide a compassionate ear. A small form, huddled near the entrance of an alleyway catches her eye, and she carefully kneels down next to the young boy and speaks in a soft voice.]

Are you alright?

[He can't be more than ten years old. His answer is petulant, and muffled in his knees.]

Go 'way...

{Ayakashi}

[By now Cardia has managed to talk to a few people, and shoo away some of the smaller ayakashi, but it seems like there's no end in sight. She stops to rest in the later afternoon, leaning against the side of the building with a sigh.

This isn't working. It's like they're patching holes in a boat one by one, with no idea what was making all the holes in the first place. ]

We'll never get anywhere like this....

[There has to be a better approach. A way to trace the problem to it's source. If only she knew how to find it...

And if only she'd noticed the large, spider like ayakashi crawling slowly down the building towards her. Someone should probably mention it.]

OOC: Powers & Permissions Link with standard disclaimer that I am okay with No's! In fact they tend to frustrate him and make him more curious about people.

The Streets

Schuldig's god power is Right Place Right Time, which means that he can teleport in 'randomly' whenever a God or Shinki may be just a little bit stuck in their investigating, particularly if they're contemplating breaking the law for the sake of their research, and especially if they want it done but would prefer to not be personally responsible.

Ayakashi

Particularly if a god-shinki pair is struggling to fight an ayakashi, Schuldig may teleport in for the same reason - his God Power alerting him to an opportunity for assistance. Or he may just be wandering by and decide to call out as part of the peanut gallery. He's a notoriously catty observer. He'll have one of his shinki with him at all times too - a pair of boots or a hulking Viking sword.
