016 | The Good Old Days

Summary: A breach in the space-time continuum is messing things up.

The Far Shore has been dealing with a lot of space-time pulsating through the past week or so and everything is culminating on the night of the 15th, even though the Heavens are preparing for an all-out Obon bash. They had planned to have the celebration on the 15th itself, but Amaterasu asked to postpone a day due to the horrible feeling that is permeating the Far Shore.

And it turns out she was right to postpone everything. In fact, it will have to be postponed another whole month at this rate...

Before

Late in the day on July 15th, the new batch of shinki will arrive to a Far Shore with a thick, tense atmosphere. All night on the 15th it feels like something is about to happen - and it's difficult to tell whether that something will be good or bad. Any attempts to contact the management of the Far Shore have fallen on deaf, slightly harried ears and so everyone is left to their own devices to try and figure out why things are so tense.

July 16

Just after midnight, an explosive shock wave rips through the Far Shore, bringing on the age changes with it. Even the spirits of the Far Shore seem to be affected - for example, the library goblins are either toddling around on wobbly legs or are dragging themselves from place to place and looking decrepit. There are a few gods and shinki that seem to have been exceptions from the change, though it is not clear why.

July 17

Another wave of energy comes in the early morning of the 17th. Fewer people are affected this time and it seems to alter those people's ages a second time. There is no rhyme or reason to who is being affected further. Several of the library goblins have just dropped dead from severe old age. Oops.

Aftermath

Late on the 17th brings about one final burst from the energy that has been plaguing the Far Shore. For a short moment, every new temple glows with a soft light, seeming to beckon to their owners. But the light is gone quickly and everyone will find themselves back to normal with complete memories of everything that happened during their age adventures. The goblins that died, though, are still very dead. Looks like the library will need to get some new help soon.

[ She speaks Ipalian with a Prench accent. ]

[ Eric smiles as the guy takes it. ]

Hope you like it, mister. It's made with magic.

[ Ah, he bashed into another kid. Eric is already up and ready to run before he pauses at the question. It was a kid...so it wasn't as scary. ]

Uhm I'm...I'm fine

[ Whoooooaaaa----

Hibiki is amazed as the light flashes and then it's like she's in a different place entirely! And she's watching, and she's feeling, and she's seeing -

No, wait, Barry. (Is that Barry? He looks....old.) Barry, don't go there. That looks like a bad place. Barry ----

What are those bad things doing to Barry?

She opens her mouth to yell for him, but it's too late. She doesn't want to watch this any more. She doesn't want to watch bad things hurting Barry, who is so cool, who seems like he can do anything.

Why can't she close her eyes???? ]

[ Fortunately, the scene fades after that, and the resulting surge of power is way, way better. Enough to block whatever that scary vision had been from Hibiki's head entirely, or at least put it aside, hopefully never to think about again.

Because who'd think about that when they could be thinking about how strong she feels right now? Hibiki looks down at her....paws....and clenches them. She doesn't really get it. But she feels strong now.

So it's all gonna be okay! ]

Wow!

[ The ayakashi, blown back by surprise, blinks. "Kero?"

Except Hibiki's got a dog suit on over her ears. It muffles him.

She laughs aloud. ] Hey! He's quiet!

[You're not the first kid he's run into and probably not the last. But Goten tries to look as friendly as possible. Most of these kids are so skittish.]

Mmmm, well do you think you could keep an eye out for me? I really need to find him and I'd appreciate the help.

... [It's Goten looking so dejected that actually makes Yukine realize that despite his looks, he's still a kid on the inside.

So yes, chasing and trying to grab someone isn't well thought out, but he supposes it's what a kid would do.]

I get it, I get it. I'm sure you were just trying your best.

Anyway. You shouldn't try to keep chasing him down, but it might not be good to leave him alone... Can you think of some way to maybe lure him out? [~~Because that's a far less childish idea Yukine~~]

There was that narrow path through the trees... You were going too fast ahead. I tried to catch up, but... I slipped down the side...

[His head bows, scar visible.]

I couldn't get up it, so I tried to follow, but.... I couldn't find you again...

Sorry. I thought you were still behind me.

[He sees the scar, which nudges his awareness of the discarded hat. He scoops down and picks it up, tugging it back over Quarantanove's head.] Your hat came off.

[He pokes Quarantanove's chest.] Next time tell me if I'm going too fast, dummy. [It's a affectionate reprimand, with no hostility.]

[She smiles right back.]

Ah, so that means I get to brush your hair afterwards too? I suppose I'll have to spend an hour helping you put it all back together if we do that.

[As if it would be some kind of great burden on Kairi, gosh. But she's hearkening back to the Beach Day, as she enjoys doing once a month at worst, since it was a tipping point for them.]

Although maybe I should be worrying instead about my toe prints finally just rubbing off completely from such devoted attention, day in and day out.

[She still moves to sit amongst the pillows. No more straight-back chair for her. She toes off her sandals before the dirt can get on all of them though.]

Yeah, thanks.

[ But wait, Celestia looks... a little different? ]

You're smaller...did you get younger, too?

I think he's okay for right now. The last I saw of him he was with some other kids. There's a bunch of people turned young, Yukine.

[Goten is a happy kid. He doesn't understand what is wrong with all these adult-turned-children. Everyone he's met is weird and jumpy. Goten never learned the lesson of 'Stranger Danger'.]

I tried offering candy last time and that didn't work.

[Oh.....Oh man that was close! Too close Goten stares at the tiny red head floating on the yellow cloud. She looks so small. Thank goodness Nimbus was around to-- wait a second. He blinks owlishly at Kairi before floating over to her to get a closer look.

Nimbus only comes to two people. Himself and-]

Kai...ri?

[ Its said softly, mostly because Goten half expects her to use Nimbus to bolt out of there. She's not going to run away from him too is she?]

[There's a surprised jerk of his head when he feels something there, but he eases up quickly enough when he realize what's happening. Once Quattordici is done, he reaches up to curl his free fingers around the bottom of his hat.]

I will. [He peeks up shyly over the rim of his glasses.] And you won't leave me behind..?

[Nimbus floats her up to be eye level with him, despite being much smaller than him. When he says her name though, she puts both hands up to her mouth and sips back on her knees]

You know my name!

[Her hands ball into little fists at her chest as she pulls them away from her mouth.]

... Does that mean we're friends?

[Touching the hair was totally worth it. And Shun laughs a bit when Ren reaches out to do the same thing to him - it tickles, even if it's only a little.

As soon as he mentions needing to get back, Shun raises a tiny fist determinedly.]

That's okay. I'm sure we can find it together. [Teamwork. Or something. It sounds like it'll work to Shun. Independent of finding the temple, though, Shun's kind of curious to see what everyone else's weird houses look like, and he waits for the picture to come out with obvious eagerness.

And then when he does see it, he gasps a little dramatically, but not for the reason he was expecting to.] I saw that one earlier! There was a different boy outside it, but it was definitely the same house. I think I remember where it is.

At least that should mean you stop making a big deal out of it. [It's not said the same dismissive way as Shun tends towards at his normal age, but rather in a slightly self-conscious one. It just seems weird to have it pointed out like that.

There's a short nod in agreement at hoping it doesn't last long, because there's a whole lot of reasons Shun wants that to be the case. He's a little surprised to hear that Yukine has actual photographic proof, though, and he leans in to look at the picture as soon as it's opened.

...And just keeps staring for a few moments.] Am I...usually older than this while I'm here? [Weird as hell, but there's at least one other thing about this he feels the need to point out.] Obviously I need to start taking better care of myself, I look like I haven't slept for a week in that photo.

[If only he knew. It's definitely not the only thing about his face and general bearing in that photo that he notices, but he's getting less and less sure he wants to ask for details. Time to skate past that by asking for the obvious and least potentially disturbing one, then.] Why did I have a kitten on my head?

It's a really long ways away... [ Sorey blinks. ] But, that's okay! It's really pretty here!

[Quattordici isn't accustomed to manners, having never exactly been taught them, but with this clear of an example being made for him, he instinctively feels like he should respond in kind.] Thanks for inviting me. Er, us. [He's almost shy in his awkwardness at trying to be polite, but he's got a new friend and there's going to be a party and cake and exploring a castle, so things are pretty great right now and it's worth making a little extra effort to make the person who's offering all that happy.

Still, words don't feel sufficient, which is one of the reasons manners remain largely foreign to him even aside from never having been properly taught. So, after a brief pause, he asks - ] Do you still want the candy?

[He's still got the chocolate bar in hand, which he offers again.]

Have to what? [At least Shun sounds curious rather than judging, but if it's something important maybe he can at least come and watch.

He tilts his head when Fubuki asks if there's somewhere he needs to go, but he seems to understand once he instead asks who the girl he's looking for is, and he hugs the plush bird a little tighter, the anxious expression creeping up on him a bit more.]

My sister, Ruri. She's younger than me, so I'm supposed to look after her and stuff, but I haven't seen her since I woke up in this weird house.

Nuh uh. Kids have to stick together, right? [He reaches out and curls a hand around one of Quarantanove's, gently tugging it away from his hat.] Now c'mon. We should find somewhere safe to hide. And food, 'cause I'm really hungry.

[Well, Shun wasn't going to get any answers out of him anyway. He should probably have been paying more attention to who he was talking to.

The dead goblin is a little bit creepy, though, he has to admit. Even so, noticing the other goblin approaching the kid, Shun steps up quickly and starts to wave him away from the body.]

There's another one coming for it. Maybe you should leave it alone.

[Shun hits the ground hard, though at least it's grass this time instead of being slammed against a solid wall. He grumbles angrily as he starts to get up again, even though it's at least better than last time.]

It's not supposed to hurt, either!

You definitely should. Ice cream is good, but shaved ice is good too, and maybe some people like it better. [There's a very serious and knowing nod about that, becuse sharing is good and it's easier to share food things when there's something everyone can like.]

[Shun's eyes go very wide at that.] You're a god? Is that why you knew my name?

[Yeah, so he might have run into both the other residents of his temple earlier, but he apparently didn't get re-filled in on the god thing. He's mostly just been running around with very little care in the world since then.

When Nanako lists the contents of the box, Shun thinks hard on it for a moment before nodding.]

There's some stuff I don't know if I've had, but trying new things is good, so I'm gonna do it.
