016 | The Good Old Days

Summary: A breach in the space-time continuum is messing things up.

The Far Shore has been dealing with a lot of space-time pulsating through the past week or so and everything is culminating on the night of the 15th, even though the Heavens are preparing for an all-out Obon bash. They had planned to have the celebration on the 15th itself, but Amaterasu asked to postpone a day due to the horrible feeling that is permeating the Far Shore.

And it turns out she was right to postpone everything. In fact, it will have to be postponed another whole month at this rate...

Before

Late in the day on July 15th, the new batch of shinki will arrive to a Far Shore with a thick, tense atmosphere. All night on the 15th it feels like something is about to happen - and it's difficult to tell whether that something will be good or bad. Any attempts to contact the management of the Far Shore have fallen on deaf, slightly harried ears and so everyone is left to their own devices to try and figure out why things are so tense.

July 16

Just after midnight, an explosive shock wave rips through the Far Shore, bringing on the age changes with it. Even the spirits of the Far Shore seem to be affected - for example, the library goblins are either toddling around on wobbly legs or are dragging themselves from place to place and looking decrepit. There are a few gods and shinki that seem to have been exceptions from the change, though it is not clear why.

July 17

Another wave of energy comes in the early morning of the 17th. Fewer people are affected this time and it seems to alter those people's ages a second time. There is no rhyme or reason to who is being affected further. Several of the library goblins have just dropped dead from severe old age. Oops.

Aftermath

Late on the 17th brings about one final burst from the energy that has been plaguing the Far Shore. For a short moment, every new temple glows with a soft light, seeming to beckon to their owners. But the light is gone quickly and everyone will find themselves back to normal with complete memories of everything that happened during their age adventures. The goblins that died, though, are still very dead. Looks like the library will need to get some new help soon.

Oh.... yes... you're right. The ayakashi. [ He hadn't really thought about it. During his time as Sasuke's shinki, the other man had never let him fight anything. He never understood why he was so protective, and now.... now he would never know. No god, no shrine, no home... and all of his friends were suddenly pint-sized. Not that... he particularly had a problem with it. They were all very cute. ]

I've only ever encountered one... it was pretty frightening. I'll be sure to stay away from them as best as I can.

But you're sitting here alone. Do you not want to go home to your goddess?

Oh no, he is actually crying.]

I-I just got lost!

[That's the real question here, isn't it. Ren isn't actually sure of the answer to that one himself, since he doesn't actually know what set Goku off that one time, and it's not like Goku can't hold his own otherwise...]

Mostly, I was just worried about how you'd feel about it. I know when you came here as the second shinki, it wasn't fun for you. [To put it mildly. And, keeping that in mind, Eric probably should have all the facts here, so...]

He is a fighter. The one time we crossed path, it was because Hibari asked for people to spar and Goku answered him--and kept up with him. But I didn't get the impression he was dangerous outside of that, no. Not any more than you are.

I was trying to pull you out of the water! I wasn't going to let you drown!

[ The shouting doesn't help his predicament much and he quickly lays back down to prevent any further injuries. ]

[You can tell one then so can he. Fair’s face. Sousuke’s not denying he ate more than Rin; he’s not that stupid. Course, that skinny little noodle across the bed from him probably could’ve used some more food to put some meat on those bones…]

Uh-huh.

[He sounds so convinced. A dark brow arches up and Sousuke looks out the corner of his eye at Rin. That’s a big challenge… but it’s only a few seconds of stubbornness before the boy cracks a smile, like it or not. Every decision he’s ever made, huh? Hah, nothing’ll ever be that special.

But since Rin’s going to burrow into the pillow and close his eyes, he figures that’s conversation ending right there. So simply shuts his own eyes and tucks his hands under his head.

Oh… still talking.]

Aa. [That smile’s still there.] Cause you'll be there.

Why didn't you leave, too? If you were together...

[If this Lucian had time to escape, why didn't this girl? It doesn't really make any sense. Unless her friend died, too... Ayumu has no way knowing what happened exactly.]

I don't know. Maybe?

Oh... I see. I will do my best then!

[Is he seriously planning to become an actual knight??]

[...look, it takes a lot to truly faze Zeno. He ambles into the kitchen, and starts rummaging himself. Kaya's been into learning how to cook, and Zeno's been into leaving increasingly expensive and/or unusual ingredients around to 'inspire' her.

He comes up with an avocado.]

Eat this for right now, and you'll be stronger while you search.

It's Shaye.

[The hand holding gets him a bit curious, but by now, he's just tired enough that he doesn't mind.]

What's yours?

[He actually looks a little curious at that.

It makes him wonder who else could possibly be here.

But he finishes a croissant, still looking thoughtful.]

Just stay careful.

[He hasn't met one yet, but they still don't sound fun.

Although, at the question, Lavi nearly deflates.]

I don't feel comfortable around her. I don't know her.

[She laughs too, a little giggle as she takes his hand and steps in closer. It's just like she remembers from last time! She's definitely glad they're friends.]

Do you like swings? I saw a park over there!

[She points in a direction with her free hand.]

[ He quickly flees the temple that he finds himself in all of a sudden, without any knowledge of how he ended up there, or where the temple is located.

In the attempt of trying to find something that feels at least a little familiar (why can't he remember a single thing? The only thing he remembers is "Seiryuu" but he also knows that he hates that title, even if he doesn't know why.) he is glaring at people with a wary sense of "they won't talk to you even if you try" but eventually he needs to ask someone what the hell is going on. So the teenager with the long sword on his back and worn old clothes heads up to a stranger. His eyes still holds suspicion and his voice a wary growl. ]

Where the fucking hell is this damn place?

[ At least his golden eyes are the most damn beautiful you'll ever see. Though for some reason he's not looking anyone straight in the eye. ]

(( July 16 Pt 2 ))
[ He was just trying to see how far these temples stretched, really. Shadowing his eyes from the sun and squinting to see further. His eyes are very good, but it's not like he can see the end of the rows of temples from somewhere halfway between the start and the middle.

Except suddenly he can, and it throws him off completely as everything comes into focus in an incredibly weird way, and he stumbles a little, suddenly dizzy. Does that usually happen when he focuses his gaze like that? ]

What the hell?

(( July 16 Pt 3 ))
[ He was already hungry when he got here, but as the day drags on and it's getting closer to evening, the setting sun changing the color of the sky (he needs to find somewhere to sleep, too), he is getting really hungry. He has a feeling of "everyone will just hate you more if you steal" so he has not dared to sneak in anywhere to steal any food yet but he's unable to keep himself from eyeing any shop that has food, or watching any person with food, with a certain amount of envy. And that's not helping his stomach to not growl. ))

(( July 17 ))
[ The next day he's a little calmer. Not really less wary, or less suspicious, but calmer.

He has found his way to the park, and has made himself comfortable in a tree, where he can keep a far-seeing eye on things. He can see everything from his spot, see through the leaves and trees and to the other end of Far Shore. He can see the heartbeats of people close by, and while he had been having a bout of sensory overload when he discovered the power the day before, he's starting to get the hang of it at least a little.

Where he's sitting with his sword to his chest though, he doesn't see the squirrel that climbs down the tree crown. He doesn't notice it until he feels something touch his shoulder and he startles and, as he turns to see what it is, loses his balance and has to scramble to grab onto the branch before he falls to the ground. The sword, however, does. There's a whole lot of curses coming from the tree. The squirrel that startles him is still up in the tree watching him, a little scared but not enough to run. ]

(( Aftermath ))
[ One moment, he was going back to where he had been staying last night, and the next he's unexpectedly walking straight into the corner he was rounding.

He can't see a thing, not a single thing. (He can't see that he's back to his normal age. His sharp vision is suddenly reduced to nothing, and with that the red marks under his eyes are gone as well.)

And suddenly he remembers one thing. Some brat that's supposed to be his God and some temple he's supposed to belong to. He didn't know anything beyond that but, as is normal from Ao, there's a string of curses flowing out. ]

That's right!

[She beams just as happily. She's just proud of Oona for understanding the concept. After all, this is like a game, right? She guesses she could have played boyfriend too, if it's playing pretend, but whatever. This way, neither of them has to be the boyfriend.]

[Lavi nods, amused.

He's not sure if Yuto can become a knight, but might as well try.]

He might say that but I don't know why... the others are bigger and stronger -- well, Seiryuu isn't much bigger than me nor much stronger, but you don't need swords and muscles when you have the dragon's eyes. Anyway, they know what their purpose is. The god said that my body is strong, but I can't imagine what that means. [He laughs self-deprecatingly.] I'm still short and squishy. I guess I didn't sneeze at all in the spring like I usually do, when the pollen comes, and I don't stay tired as long as I used to, and-- [He looks down at his palm again. He was sure he scraped it. There should be at least some peeled skin, if not blood...] Other, other little things like that, but that won't help me to protect the king,

[He latches on to the other things she says, and laughs even harder when she calls Hakuryuu wise.] Don't, don't~ He'll hear you and then we'll never hear the end of it. Which is about how it is with Seiryuu and Ryokuryuu. It's funny, because Seiryuu is so calm and dry usually, he always comes out with these really long, elaborate insults that usually take a minute to sink in. But Ryokuryuu just belittles him in any little way, and he flies off the handle and they start shouting and waving their weapons and Hakuryuu just hates being left out of a fight when he can so obviously beat them both up...

[He rolls his eyes in exasperation, but there's fond amusement there, too.]

[[How very productive of you, Ren.]]

[Sigh. If he doesn't get -sama, there's no point in saying it.
But priorities, man!]

It sure is. I ...guess your shinki but- if they're in the same situation as you, then no one has fed them yet today? Man, that's bad. Let's go back and take care of them! [Come to think of it, who is Suzugamori's shinki now? Has it changed? The new guys change so frequently. Well, he'll just wrack his brain on the way.]

Come on!

Sounds like you need to try whatever it was again, because I'm pretty sure most of the people here are ones who were brought here.

[At least, that's what he's guessing from the answers he's gotten off the people he's spoken to so far. Still, the woman doesn't look that old, so he has to remark on one thing.]

It can't have been that long ago if you were here for it.

[Small Shun still seems a bit surprised at the headpat, but he seems to calm himself a bit with that and the verbal reassurance. He's seen nothing yet to indicate that it won't be okay, so he's happy enough with it for now.

When it comes to the next question, Shun frowns a little at Fubuki.] Why do you want me to wait? Is the thing you're doing a secret or are you just being boring?

[Shots fired.]

[That is, if possible, an even weirder thing to hear looking at this situation, and Shun looks back at the goblin again as if to make sure it hadn't changed ages while his back was turned.]

So something weird happened to all of them...but only some of them died. [Extremely weird. It'd help if Shun had any idea what was going on himself, but he really doesn't.]

[The young Shun swells with childish pride at the compliment, even with the prospect that he'll need to study anyway. He's still totally confident he can do this.]

If you mean the deep deep sea, I know there's lots of cool creepy stuff down there that we don't know much about. But the normal deep sea...there's lots of stuff that lives on the bottom, right? And they eat things that come from up above, or blend in so they can hunt, or help fish stay clean and stuff...

[He's mostly rattling off things he remembers about bottom-feeders and similar weird ocean life, because it seems relevant.]

What does she do? [This is a god Shun hasn't heard of before, which immediately means this is new and interesting information he wants to know. Gods do all sorts of things, right?

There's an enthusiastic nod in reply to what she says about new things, the amusement going unnoticed.] That's right. You have to know stuff before you can decide you don't like it.

Maybe they do. I've seen a lot today.

[That makes him think for a moment, but he's distracted by what Hibiki says next, which has him nodding very knowingly.]

I think they would. Everyone likes parties, right?

It's way back that way. [Shun points back the way he came. He doesn't figure that will be a deterrent to anyone who wants to explore, anyway.

When Goku says that, Shun leans in to listen, looking up at the temple like it's some kind of great mystery.]

Maybe everyone left already. Or maybe you were the only one, but that's kinda spooky.

[It seems like it'd be sad to be alone in a building that big.]
