018 | Season Spirits

Who: Everyone!
What: Season spirits and spooky things

Where: The Near Shore and Far Shore
Summary: It's the time for spirits to get a bit more 'lively'.

August is a spiritual season in Japan with many people preparing for the Obon festival but many others get into the spirit in another way. All across Japan, people have begun to share their favorite summer ghost stories. Movie theaters advertise the hottest horror flick of the season, teenagers challenge each other to do trials of courage, haunted houses begin to pop up, and it feels like you can't change the channel without switching to some ghost hunting urban legend special. All of this talk about spirits comes at a cost, though.

July comes and passes easily enough but it's almost as if as soon as August begins, so do the incidents. There's an increase in spiritual activity and shenanigans on both shores. Some of them are harmless spooks but others are much more sinister. Arm yourselves with all of the ofuda and omamori you can find and get out there and restore peace!

Possessed Possessions

Inhabitants of the Far Shore may awaken to find their sheets trying to strangle them and shoes stomping on the floor around them. Others may go about their day and find out their teapots suddenly only serve lukewarm tea or their weapons are trying to take swings at them. They're just playful spirits that will abandon their hosts if you shove any ofuda/omamori at them or yell loudly enough. They aren't malicious spirits... they were only just trying to have some fun.

Spirited Festivals

There's a festival every weekend and some of them have set up haunted houses for patrons to visit. You have your standard haunted house thrills... costume make up, jump scares, special effects smoke, the usual! But it looks like some real ghosts have made themselves at home here. Visitors are going in and emerging hours later absolutely traumatized. It looks like once you enter, the real spirits walk you around in circles and give you real scares. There are some spirits here just to have fun thrills and these are spirits that can be chased away with regular ofuda. But it looks like the more violent ones are actually ayakashi out for vengeance. Be careful in there!

Cursed Charms

There sure are some weird trends out there, huh? The latest one is buying cursed trinkets off the internet and passing them off as gifts to unsuspecting victims whether it be to prank a friend or get revenge on an enemy. Cursed mirrors, dolls, fake ofuda, VHS tapes, and so on are being passed around the Near Shore and spreading all sorts of curses.

Bad luck. As long as you're in possession of the cursed item, you'll be followed by bad luck to varying degrees depending on the quality of the charm.
Fear. Holding onto this charm results in intense, crippling fear. The fear can manifest as an intense paranoia at all times or being frozen with fear in the face of danger. Some say you can even die of fright...
Sickness. This charm is pretty straightforward. Having this charm just makes you feel incredibly under the weather and your health will worsen the longer you have the charm.
Evil. Holding onto this charm results in you being followed attracting evil instead of warding it. Suddenly, you feel as though you are always being followed, as if something is stalking you and clearly out to get you. You begin to run into smaller ayakashi at first but they keep growing in strength and number until you can't fight anymore.
Bad romance. Someone's meddled with a romance charm so it ends relationships instead of making them! People stuck with this charm are suddenly hyper aware of the faults of others. Everything gets on your nerves and you can't stand being around that person because they're just that annoying. It doesn't just work on couples! It also works on friends and relatives too.
Bears? An oddly specific curse. It looks like someone has taken a protection from bears charm and made it so now you attract bears where ever you go. Some of them are nice but others...

You can try to destroy the charms but you will find that unless you have purification powers or rend it, the effects last. It looks like most people have been able to shake off the effects by simply disposing of them at temples and buying another charm to counter the effects.

Haunting Hour

There are reports of violent attacks at night-- people being pulled into alleys and attacked, school children being chased by slashers while walking home from school, homes being broken into-- and all of it is done without a single clue left behind to explain who did it. People are warned to be careful at night and as the sun begins to set, something happens. The hour between sunset and dark is supposed to be the scariest hour them all. At this time, the shadows are suspiciously bigger and darker and you constantly see things just out of the corner of your eye. Suddenly, the wind blows cold and there's a rotten smell in the air like blood. It's Oumagatoki, the hour evil spirits meet. Small time ayakashi and spirits on the verge of becoming ayakashi spill into the streets and begin to terrorize others. Protect the people of the Near Shore and watch your own backs.*

* These are just generic ayakashi! Nothing special, nothing specific. Feel free to make up and NPC your own two-bit ayakashi.

Everyone receives it and there is no way to track where the message came from. If you follow the directions, you'll arrive at a small temple on the outskirts of a city. A sacred fire is lit on the grounds for people to dispose of any cursed or old charms they may have collected. Hang around a bit and it'll become obvious that no one knows who has gathered all of you here tonight. The only ones around are gods and shinki. It doesn't look like any evil spirits are around so other than being invited to the middle of no where at night... there's nothing to worry about. If you wait around, nothing will happen. So while you're here, you might as well discuss the strange happenings! Or tell ghost stories around the fire.

[ That..... catches him off guard, but his bat's not lowering anytime soon, the unfamiliar guy stepping out of the shadows getting a suspicious look from him. ]

I'm looking for whoever's causing all the problems around here after dark. Is that you?

Not at all.

[Hakkai glances around, and then back at Misaki, with a faint smile.]

As a matter of fact, I'm just heading home from a prayer... but you said there were problems around here after dark?

Would you like a hand?

That's what people are saying.

[ He hears things. Luckily one of the things he's great at, even if he doesn't understand the scope of it yet.

He gives the stranger an assessing stare. ]

Maybe. You any good?

In a fight? Oh, I know a trick or two!

[He beams cheerfully. If it's an ayakashi, it may be a little more challenging than that, but a chi barrier seems to hold them off almost as well as a borderline.

And not all trouble is caused by ayakashi. Mortal threats are significantly simpler to handle. That said, though -- he casts a glance at the boy.]

Cho Hakkai, taking the position of Li Tieguai for the moment. May I ask if you're a god or a shinki?

[ Yata hesitates a moment, because he's understandably wary about meeting strange gods lately, but after a moment he straightens and props his bat on one shoulder again. ]

Shinki. I'm Yata.

[ If anything, the cheerful smile's putting him a little more on edge instead of reassuring him. ]

Ah, that's convenient. You can protect us with borderlines if you have to, then.

[He inclines his head politely, and gestures down the dark street.] It's a pleasure to meet you. Shall we?

[The wind picks up again, carrying that distant grave-reek and blowing a pair of crumpled paper wrappers out across the street with a ghostly rustle.]

[ Yata blinks at him before giving a heavy sigh and scraping his hand over his face for a moment. ]

Uh, yeah. About that.... that's probably not gonna happen. But I can still do pretty well at protecting against most things.

[ Just... not with Borderlines. Those are a problem still. Oops?

He makes a face when the wind picks up again, bringing with it that same, unpleasant stench. ]

Ugh, that's awful, whatever it is. Where the hell's it coming from? [ Because he's pretty sure that's where he's gonna find whatever's been wrecking havoc around here/ ]

I see.

[Helpfully -- or at least with a helpful tone -- he suggests:] You really should practice them. They're the best defense a shinki has against ayakashi when he's on the Near Shore alone.

[It's not as though Yata doesn't know that already, if he's been here any time at all, so Hakkai moves briskly on to sniffing the air and pulling a face. It's not quite the smell of rot: more the smell of deep earth, mold and ... something else, something indefinable. And unpleasant. Definitely unpleasant.]

I'm not sure. [He doesn't have Goku's nose, even if his is keener than a human's would be.] ... But I think it may be down that way?

[ Yata grumbles at that before pushing off on his skateboard, moving down the street in the direction the god had indicated. ]

Yeah, yeah, so everyone keeps telling me. It's not that easy.

[ If only 'practicing more' had been a valid solution to his problem, he'd have had it perfected in the first week.

Either way, Hakkai, you have better ideas than Yata. Who's big plan was to yell until whatever-it-was came out to shut him up. He keeps his eyes peeled now, though, searching the shadows for any sign of movement, bat at the ready ]

[Subtly, Hakkai flexes his hands at his side, a vague look in his eyes as he tries to pick out the sense of wrongness that lies under that grave-reek. He isn't speeding up to keep pace with Yata's skateboard; he strides after it, instead, expecting the shinki to slow down enough not to lose him.]

If you'd like a little advice, I wasn't too bad with borderlines before I became a god --

[-- he'd have explained, except a movement from above distracts him. He turns, eyes narrowing, just as a huge, slumped form uncoils from the roof of the house to their left and opens two faintly glowing yellow-red eyes set in the palms of its oversized, upraised hands.]

Before you were a.... wait, what?

[ He circles back around towards the guy on his skateboard, expression confused by that particular choice of wording. But he doesn't have time to question more because there's movement at last and he spins, already alert and wary and ready for an attack.

Only to peer up at the strange form uncoiling on the roof of a nearby building. ]

Man. Why do they always have to look so freaky? Why couldn't you be something dumb like a pigeon for once?

[ Not that he's going to let that stop him. He brings his bat down off his shoulder, letting his Red Aura unfurl and wrap around him with a visible glow of flames. ]

Some of them are pigeons! [Hakkai pauses as the silhouette of this ayakashi becomes clear: a nine-foot human frame, headless, eyes in its hands and mouth gaping in its torso like a gutting slash with teeth.]

Freaky pigeons. [He glances at Yata and the sudden glow of power enveloping him, with a faint smile. Good, he's not helpless, and he's not just relying on a baseball bat.

Hakkai brings his hands together, a glimmer of white sparking between them as the ayakashi scrambles down the rooftop on hands and feet, occasionally raising one or the other hand to get a look at them. Its mouth gapes wider, and a long tongue licks out, tasting the air.

Smells good.... it whispers in a garbled voice, hits the edge of the roof, and lunges.]

[ The pigeon comment has him heaving a very put-upon and exasperated sigh. ]

That's not better! That's still freaky! But not as freaky as that. [ Because wtf is that, it looks like something out of a horror game. This isn't supposed to be Silent Hill!

Still, he can take gross monster better than he can take ghosts, so for the moment, he just grips his bat tighter and puts on a burst of speed, Red sparks shooting out from the wheels of his skateboard as he lunges ahead, going in low and fast.

The back swings at one of the ayakashi's knees, hoping to cripple his movement to make him an easier target. Although that tongue is freaky long and he has to duck it on his approach, when it lashes out at the air over his head, as if tasting his scent in the air. ]

Yeah, that is not a compliment coming from you, dude.

[Some youkai are indisputably prettier than others. This one looks like it's walked right out of an old horror scroll, but its knee crumples forward and sends it crashing to the ground at Yata's blow.

What they're not going to be able to do, without Hakkai naming the stranger, is kill it. And he has no desire to take on a temporary shinki.

He probably should have insisted on one of his own shinki coming with him on these prayers, he reflects, and flings a blazing ball of chi directly at the ayakashi's torso-mouth. Its tongue whips up as if to taste, and the attack burns a neat hole through muscle and through the back of its -- chest? head? -- behind.

The ayakashi bellows, hands stretching up and flexing with agony as it focuses one eye on each of them. Its wounded tongue lashes towards Yata, and its hands swipe viciously down at Hakkai.]

[ Yata swerves to avoid the tongue and lets his Red Aura flare up once more. It flares along his bat a moment before he swings and connects, swatting the tongue away with a surprising amount of strength for someone so slight. The flames spread at the impact, racing along the ayakashi's flesh like wildfire, making the creature howl in agony. ]

Burn, you ugly fucker.

[ There might be a vindictive note in Yata's voice at that as he circles again, then narrowly dodges a swiping clawed hand, the eye on its palm fixated on him and swiveling wildly. He teeters at the sudden attack, struggling to keep his balance. ] Whoa!

[Hakkai's dodging the same hand, and he steadies Yata with a quick hand on his shoulder, ducking under a sweep of claws that comes close enough to ruffle his hair.]

We can't kill it, but we can lure it away from the houses. Down to the river.

[It's not too far to the river; three intersections away, the road they're on lifts into a pleasant bridge and stripes of concrete-and-grass border the tame water. The ayakashi is swatting at its own burning flesh now, trying to stifle the flames. It stumbles back to crush part of a garden wall under its weight. Hakkai hisses disapprovingly.

They're lucky it's late; no one's out in the street to be hurt, but they can't trust that'll continue. Not with the amount of noise they're making.]

How fast are you on that skateboard? I can harry it.

[ That question gets a smirk from him. ]

Don't worry. I can be as fast as I need to be. [ He glances around, trying to get his bearings in relation to the river he'd passed earlier. ] Can you keep up if I lure it away? Or you can follow, if that's easier.

[ Although he's not sure what they're supposed to do with it when they get it to the river, if neither of them are equipped to kill the thing. Will beating it into a senseless pulp work in the meantime? ]

I think I can keep up.

[It lashes out at him with an arm, and he ducks neatly under it, slamming the creature in the ribs (or, from another point of view, the side of the face) with his elbow. It's a good thing he's wearing long sleeves. The fabric won't hold up against blight if he's in contact for any length of time, but it's enough for a quick blow without damage.

He leaps back out of range as it reels and recovers from the hit, and casts Yata a glance.]

Once we're there, if we can damage it enough to keep it in one place for a few minutes, I can fetch my shinki for the final blow. Go!

[He dodges another swipe, and the ayakashi snarls in frustration.]

[ Oh, yeah. That's kinda important, isn;t it.

Yata dodges another slash, ducking under and circling around the thing, setting it on fire once again from behind and drawing the ayakashi's attention to him with a furious, pained howl. ]

Yeah, that was me, ugly. What're you gonna do about it?

[ Swing at him again, apparently, and he quickly leaps his board to the side to evade before calling over to the god. ]

Go get your shinki and meet us at the river. I can keep him busy till then!

[ Because yeah, he's really got it's attention now. Apparently it doesn't like being set on fire. Who knew? ]

[It does seem to have more objections to the fire Yata's using than to Hakkai's chi attacks -- and Yata has a skateboard.

Hakkai looks thoughtfully at him for a moment, then nods sharply, and disappears, teleporting to his own shrine. From there, to the Far Shore; from there to dash into his temple and find the soulless shinki who, once upon a time, was Banri.

It's a few minutes before he finds 'Asshole,' and calls him, and returns with worried speed to the Near Shore and the riverbank. He appears a half-foot above the grass, and lands in a crouch, straightening and looking around in the gloom. The blade of the sword in his hand catches a glimmer of light from the street lamps above, echoing the faint glitter on the river.]

[ Well, Yata's succeeded in keeping the thing occupied, although he looks a little worse for wear, not that he's letting that slow him down any. There's a bloody slash against his left shoulder, the wound visible beneath his too-large clothing, but his right is still wielding his bat with careful efficiency as he weaves and dodges the angry and half-burned ayakashi. His expression is focused into an expression of intense concentration as he leads the thing on a merry chase beneath a bridge that stretches over the river, because the supports and railings and pillars make for a perfect backdrop for all the tricks he needs to pull to keep just out of reach or just a few inches ahead of the monster that's near-frenzied in its pursuit.

He's so absorbed in the one-on-one he doesn't even realize when Hakkai reappears. ]

[The smell of blood and soot are heavy in the air, and Hakkai's gaze flicks to Yata with concern as he picks up his pace smoothly into a run. The monster is visibly injured; the hole Hakkai's chi had torn in its torso is long since sealed over, but burns speckle its purplish flesh, visible in the flickering light of Yata's flames.

It's a good thing that he's still up and fighting, Hakkai thinks, absently. In the dark, he'd never find the shinki down here.

The ayakashi is close, now, and Hakkai shifts his grip on the hilt of his blade, knuckles tensing as he throws himself into a lunge. The curved, heavy-bladed saber comes down on the creature's shoulder with all of Hakkai's strength. Its arm falls away in a splash of ectoplasm that spatters Hakkai's hands and face, leaving burning spots of blight behind.

The creature bellows in pain and rounds on him, remaining arm lifting as it tries to see.]

[ Hakkai's attack had brought a much-needed diversion just in the nick of time, since the ayakashi had been closing in on him in its frenzied fury and he was running out of evasion tactics to keep out of range of its claws and teeth.

When the monster bellows and jerks around to face the newly returned thread, Yata skids to a stop, bracing his hands on his knees as he drags in a lungful of air. ]

Nice. Glad you came back to join the party.

Please excuse the delay! Ha ha, it looks like the festivities have been exciting.

[The monster is swiping viciously at him with its remaining hand. It's surprisingly fast, despite its injuries, and Hakkai fences casually, retreating step after step to lure it further away from the exhausted shinki.

He's never been a swordsman, but he's used a sword, and the ayakashi isn't so big or so skilled that it exceeds his skills. Once he's drawn it several feet away, he waits for it to overextend on one last swipe, and dives in, blade severing its arm and leaving him with another spatter of blighted goo.

It's a shame, really, that he couldn't find Ayumu too -- but there'd been no time. He's barely gotten back in time to help Yata as it is.]

That's one word for it.

[ Yata's just relieved that he has a moment to catch his breath while Hakkai keeps it busy but he doesn't remain still for long, launching himself back into the fight to set the things remaining limb on fire with a sharp blow of his bat while it's swinging and swiping at Hakkai. ]
