July Training

Who: Everyone
What: Information and Training
When: August 5
Where: Bishamon's temple, the Far Shore
Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods (although there's none this time) and shinki

The product of many meetings and recommendations, at last it has taken shape. On this day, in anticipation of the new arrivals who appear in a recognized pattern, Heaven has partnered with the new gods and shinki to organize a very helpful informational reception.

The shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are, should they allow it, guided kindly towards Bishamon's temple. And in that vast complex they are brought to a traditional-style dojo.
Here the newly arrived gods are gathered, so finding their partner is more simple. The gods and shinki are free to take their time during this day to learn about the aspects of their new life from Amaterasu's shinki, or from the many veteran new god and shinki volunteers.

God Training

Bishamon herself, as well as Amaterasu's ever-present shinki and any volunteering gods, will be the foremost source of information regarding being a god and what is expected of them, such as prayers. It is encouraged that gods group up together to practice what they've learned and discuss their ideologies.
Newly arrived gods are still expected to communicate to their shinki the information* they themselves get oriented with when they arrive.

Shinki Training

Various volunteers are stationed around the building, passing out helpful informational pamphlets. There are many shinki, including Bishamon's and Amaterasu's, who will be more than happy to train in using the borderline and some of the basics of what is expected of a shinki. It is encouraged that shinki group up together to practice what they've learned and discuss their ideologies.
Bishamon's lead shinki Kazuma offers a lecture to new arrivals that will thoroughly cover some essential points about teamwork with both shinki and other gods.

Physical Training

The dojo is stocked with a wide variety of practice weapons, traditional and modern. There are volunteers here as well, willing to assist in basic training. (Or even more advanced sparring, depending on the volunteer.) Essential for gods who, for example, find themselves with a sword shinki but are at risk of cutting off their own toes.
Also useful for veteran new gods wishing to train with their current partner shinki.

Rest and Refreshments

There is a garden off the dojo that is free to be used for rest and conversation.
Should anyone wander outside the designated area, some shinki of Bishamon's will attach themselves to them and not leave them be until they return to the dojo.

There is a refreshments table provided. It is covered with light snacks and various kinds of hydrating drinks. There is a little sitting area set up for people to relax in after they have finished their training or if they're just taking a quick break to cool down. Even hand towels are provided by Bishamon's helpful shinki. The Heavens wants everyone to stay in good condition!

In Summary:
  • Get all the information you can handle
  • Veteran new gods and shinki are welcome to volunteer showing the ropes
  • Get in some training
  • Don't get dehydrated
  • Spectate if you want
  • Have fun~

[ Oh, she's quite familiar with what that paper was. At this point, Botan's just going to make sure that there's a bit of distance between them. In case of the guy being a real flailing type of person. Which has shown to be very possible. ]

Well, the first step is that you don't have to understand it all at once. Step one is that all of us shinki have died, and we're to work with gods to grant some prayers and deal with evil spirits called ayakashi.

[ That would be the cliff-noted version of the pamphlet cliff-notes. ]

Everything else with vessels, borderlines and spells won't matter until you meet the god that will be naming you.

I mean, that's what I read too, it just... sounds so... [Bizarre? Unbelievable? He doesn't think he has the vocabulary to properly express what he finds wrong with it all, so he just gives up and sighs before he makes an even bigger fool out of himself.]

... Guess it's reassuring that I don't have to understand it all yet.

[From her explanation, he does understand one thing fairly clearly, though. And it's that part that makes him cross his arms and regard her with a frown, though it's not really directed at her. Just at the unfairness of the arrangements.] But can't I really do any of the cool stuff before I meet my god?

[He'd kinda hoped he could have practiced at least a little before meeting them.]
genkireaper: (A little stretchy stretch)

So much like something you'd see on tv?

[ If you don't have the right word, go for the right metaphor, as Botan likes to say. If she ever said that. Yet she can decipher what that frumpy looking face was to, even before what Yosuke said. ]

I mean, you can still practice the gesture and everything, but you won't get results. In fact, gaining confidence towards doing the action might help. It could even get you to making the borderline on your first try!

[ ... Maybe. It's a theory, okay? "A game theory." - MatPat ]

Personally, I observed and figured out what I could do on my own before my god had found me.

trashcrash: (ohh right thats a thing)

Yeah, that! [He sounds mildly impressed at the accuracy of that comparison, actually.] It sounds just like the setting of a manga or something.

[And it doesn't look like he's the cool main character in this story either.]

I dunno. It feels kinda stupid to just practice the gestures if nothing happens. [It'd undoubtedly look lame, too.]

Then again, I guess that beats doing nothing. [He shifts his weight, expression suddenly more focused. He's still not sure whether he even believes all this crap about magic in the first place but if it is true, then... she must be really amazing, if she managed to figure out some spell thing just from observing.] So, um, think you could... show me how to do it properly? That borderline thing.

[ Some reactions to the ridiculous are just the same, no matter when you're from (as long as you're from the same general area.) But hey, she'll definitely help out with that whole 'getting started' thing. After all, results or no, practice still built you up to some kind of aptitude. Which is within anyone's reach. ]

Sure. I can definitely get you started down the right path. First is the hand gesture.

[ Which she demonstrates, holding her hand up in that 'halberd' fashion. ]

Also, an important part of this whole thing seems to be the confidence you have in your own abilities and skills. Which is why practicing before you actually can make a borderline is still a good idea.
trashcrash: (yeah dont think thats how it works)

[Ever so slowly, Yosuke follows her example and moves his fingers into the appropriate pose, feeling increasingly silly by the second.]

Like this? [He sounds more unsure than he wants to - especially after he hears what she says next.] Man, it's a bit hard to have confidence in something crazy like this! [But he'll try, alright. No way he's gonna let himself look like a loser in front of a girl! Especially one that tries to help him.]

Okay, so now I just... swipe? [He makes a flimsy motion.] And think of a line appearing or something?

[He's not sure if that helps.]
genkireaper: (That was a little silly)

[personal profile] genkireaper 2017-07-24 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Try to keep those three fingers straight.

[ But geeze, that was flimsy. She knew that he wasn't the most motivated because he didn't have a name yet, but it seemed like he was just a bit more halfhearted about it. ]

You also don't have to think of a line appearing. Just be assured that it'll be successful and that the barrier will show up. Then you get results like this:

[ She makes the motion while saying 'line!' as the borderline comes up in a bright light, several feet away. ]

When you have one, you sort of have a sense for how it's doing, like when it's about to break, or is weakening on its own.

[Yosuke is just about to cut in and comment on her explanation, when her live demonstration catches him off guard. He jumps back in startled surprise despite the already safe distance to the borderline, then turns to her with wide eyes.]

Dude! [He points.] That--- that was awesome!

[And he's going to learn to do the same? Sweet!

More motivated now, he resumes the stance she taught him.]
Alright, so just... straight fingers, then-- swipe! [He does, and as expected, nothing happens. But he feels more confident now, for what's it worth, and repeats the action a few times more before turning to her.] How's that? Am I a natural?

[personal profile] genkireaper 2017-07-31 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I am quite capable for what little time I've been here.

[ That confidence is exactly why her borderline seemed to be rather strong, too. Watching his practice swipes, Botan lets her Line dissipate. ]

Like a fish in water. When you get your name, you'll have no trouble getting started. Just remember to call out 'line' when you're doing so. It's like a spell that way. Of course, I'm sure you'll have no trouble managing that.

[At least she isn't needlessly humble about it. It makes Yosuke feel better about openly grinning over the compliments she gives him, too.]

Really?! Damn, guess I am cut out for this after all! [He hadn't been entirely serious about the natural part, so hearing that he actually wasn't a total disappointment, especially from someone so talented... it felt great, man.]

Call out 'line'... got it. [He grins a bit.] Guess it really does feel cooler when you call out your attack, huh? [That's what the heroes in comics and stuff do, too.] Are there other spells I should know about?
genkireaper: (Lemme just laugh off that fear)

[personal profile] genkireaper 2017-08-15 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Mm. It certainly gives the whole thing an added feeling to it.

[ Given that the secret is confidence, she's not about to go cutting down or offering harsh criticisms to the guy. But she thinks about that last part- Focusing on getting a hang of Borderlines, she hadn't thought past that to other spells. There definitely were- it was stated in the pamphlet. ]

There are, but I think it takes a lot of extra work to get the hang of them. I haven't even looked into what they are at this point.
