What makes you so sure about that?

Only a creature or being that had the strength to fend off all people here at once and still accomplish its goals would take that action, for any less strength would be failure. And a being with such power would have no need to wait.

So you're saying the culprit isn't that strong, but still smart enough to not draw much attention.

[He had his own thoughts on that, but he kept his mouth shut in that regard.]

I think I'm going to opt out of looking for the guy.

That could still be very strong and not terribly smart, and still be not strong enough and smart enough. The balance of power here is decidedly in our favor.

Our favor, huh...? [He knew what she meant, but there was something about being lumped together in only one little word like "our" that bothered him.]

Who knows how long it'll stay that way.

Were I our enemies, I would seek to damage that balance through any means possible. We must be vigilant and cautious, as the gods here say, yet at the same time we cannot compromise our ability to work together.

I don't know how possible it'll be to work together when we're being told to look out for suspicious people.

...But that's for people to figure out on their own.

Yes. That is a problem. [Which she has no answer to except professionalism in the service of duty, so she doesn't attempt to provide one.] It is poor guidance by these gods.

[He blinked at the latter half of her statement, and his posture relaxed just a touch.]

That's not something I've heard often.

Nonetheless, it is true. Lord Odin would not have allowed this situation to persist.

"Lord Odin"? [One of the other gods here, maybe? That was his best guess, although he couldn't recall anyone calling themselves such.]

Never heard of 'em.

Odin is the greatest of the Aesir and he who rules the gods in Valhalla. As such, he is my master, and to whom I answer.

There is another 'Odin' here, as part of the pantheon known as 'Norse', which is a strange and inaccurate reflection of my own.

[Despite the impressiveness of that title, Ross didn't show an immediate reaction to it. It did kind of sound like she was a shinki for this guy, especially since he didn't have much to compare the situation to, but it fell apart upon coming to his own conclusions. If she knew it was inaccurate, she was either a god or a shinki who had regained some memories.

His gaze became wary again. It seemed safer to assume the former.]

You sound pretty sure that the Odin here is the imposter.

[A slight frown creases her faces, as she folds her arms. She may not be wearing armor, but in this moment that might be easy to forget.]

The 'Norse gods' here do not number the Valkyrie among them. Obviously this pantheon does not reflect my own properly.

You're saying "obviously" but I can't remember anything about that even if I want to.

[Other worlds aside, It wasn't like he was particularly devout even when he was alive.]

It is obvious because I have just told you an undeniable fact that demonstrates the difference.

[That is not snarky, nor judgmental, nor wry. It is as coolly imperious as everything else she says.]

I got that much. [Though his own frown had deepened for a moment at the mention of undeniable facts. Both versions still sounded equally plausible to him.]

What are you going to do about that difference?

Bemoan it. [Was that a joke? With her, who can tell? (Though the answer is likely 'no'.)] I do not believe the gods here are taking suggestions regarding reorganization of their system.

You don’t believe so, huh... [There were a lot of things he could say about that, but he held his tongue. Even if he said something, he had at least a gut feeling on how she would take it, though whether that gut feeling was accurate or not was another thing entirely.]

But what about knowing? [Okay, he was mostly holding his tongue.]

The certain way is to ask. Yet from the attitude of the gods here, I suspect they would regard the question as either arrogant, stupid, or both. It is my estimation that gaining confirmation would likely result in greater mutual acrimony. I judge that a poor gain at best.

[Well, he asked.]

Huh. [He did indeed, though he saw those consequences from a different point of view. Very different, even.]

Then maybe I'll ask and see what they say.

[...Uh.]

If you so desire. What do you seek to accomplish?

[Given that his desire seems to have come specifically from her saying it would cause more harm than good, she's quite curious.]

Nothing much. [He suspected he wouldn't be the first person to try asking the gods for answers. Certainly not the last, either.]

Either I'll get the answers I'm asking about, or I'll make that acrimony mutual instead of just one-sided.

If you have nothing to lose, then you have everything to gain. [She can agree with that logic, though she does not think he has nothing to lose. But neither does she think her arguments will fall on open ears.]

[She would be entirely right on that one. His stubbornness was...a problem.]

It's something like that.
