The Barian world is a high energy world, and so are its atmosphere and most of its inhabitants. Barians who come to the human world are severely weakened by the lack of energy there and can have trouble assuming their true shapes to the point where a longer stay is very dangerous. Similarly a prolonged stay in the Barian world can be very hazardous to any human who does it.

I can imagine that some unlucky travelers might have helped create stories about ghosts or weird creatures in both worlds. Most of the known gateways have been sealed a long time ago, but it still happens occasionally. That's where I came into play.
