Goku's right. This place... it's forced a lot of changes on all of us. Come on, Yaone... let's sit down and keep talking.
[ While he debates how to explain what he knows. He leads her to a bench where they're "alone" albeit in public. ]
You know from that time on the river how we've always done whatever it takes - usually for Kou's sake. Here, there's a big problem that comes from talking to the ones who forget - the shinki - about things they shouldn't know. I thought at first that working alongside the only people I knew here - Hakkai and Gojyo, before Goku arrived - would get me back to Kou and the rest of you faster. Unfortunately, I had to step away from them entirely... for Gojyo's sake this time.
[ He gets serious, his fists crushed together and his veins starting to bulge. ]
See... if I accidentally let slip anything I knew, not just about our old lives as brothers, but anything since then too - then I wouldn't just hurt him. I could've killed him.
[ His shoulders relax ever so slightly, in frustration though. ]
All this time... and I had to spend it watching my brother run around like a maniac, at one point got his arm cut off, like he was a little kid again begging for attention. And I couldn't give it to him. He got it in his head that the one memory he knew of ruined his life, and I was the cause. He wasn't... entirely wrong, I just couldn't explain anything to him either. And because I had to avoid him, I had to avoid Hakkai's temple altogether.
This war you think they're building up to... I don't think it matters, Yaone. They call us gods here and tell us to take responsibility for the ones in our care, at our temples. That's all I've been able to do, and even then... people can get ripped away from this world all over again as easily as my brother's memories. Hell, at one point, I forgot everything too, and I've been what they're calling a god this whole time. We have to take care of our own. Here... that happens to include our shinki, even if they used to be human.
