003 | Save The Boats

Who: Everyone!
What: It's a few days after Hinamatsuri - time for a party!
When: Late evening (March 5, 2016) into early morning (March 6, 2016)
Where: The banks of the Kamo River
Summary: The Heavens have thrown together an outdoor party to celebrate Spring and ALSO to ask the Far Shore residents to keep the boats from Hinamatsuri from coming to shore.

Hinamatsuri is celebrated in Japan on March 3 every year. It is a festival to celebrate all of the young girls of Japan, not as important as their own birthdays, but certainly a big day for all families with a little girl among their household. It's perfectly normal for all of the cuties to dress up and get all sorts of delightful treats out of the day.

One of the normal festivities is a ceremony during which ornamental dolls are placed on tiers on boats and floated down the river. It is thought that all of the bad luck for the coming year floats down the river with the dolls, taking that bad luck away from their young girls to keep them safe for another year.

But the boats don't always make it all the way down the river like they're supposed to, and the Heavens sometimes like to make sure that the year will be full of less bad luck for the people of Japan. So they have decided to have the almighty gods do some legwork and disguised it as a fun Springtime party! They expect gods and shinki alike to push the boats away from the shoreline wherever they see them venturing near.

New gods and shinki will have been ushered immediately to the party as well, given all of the normal information, and then left to mingle among their new cohorts. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce the newbies to both their co-workers and the kinds of jobs they'll be expected to perform.

Buffet

A luxurious buffet is set up for everyone to enjoy. There are all kinds of foods to enjoy, though they all seem to be of a local variety. The Heavens have apparently used the funding from their own temples to purchase local food and support local businesses at the same time. In particular among the food and copious amounts of booze, you will find some Hinamatsuri staples - hina-arare, hishi mochi, chirashizushi, and a salt-based clam soup called ushijiru. Among the booze you'll find shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice, also a regular fare of Hinamatsuri.

The Boats

As if they are literally overflowing with bad luck, the boats seem to be making a desperate attempt to land themselves upon the shoreline. They are reluctant to make their way back into the water and will gladly run people down if they're allowed to and are happy to ram into someone over and over again to try and get their way. When they are finally pushed back to the center of the river, they will begrudgingly continue on their way. Of course, some of them will simply sink because of the weight of all that bad luck, but who can really blame them.

Children

As expected of a day dedicated to celebrating children, there are dozens of children running around and playing games during the festivities. It's hard to distinguish, but some of them appear to be human children while others are shinki. They are happy to let anyone in on their games and will gladly bother adults to come play with them or to let them try some of the liquor. (Mods will be available to play out any child interactions you may want, just flag us down.)

Counselling

Off to the side, there is a tiny table set up with a small, nicely written sign that reads "Gentle Counselling". On the other side of the table is a sweetly smiling shinki who is willing to listen to your problems and answer any questions you might have. She is also here to help out any gods that are having a hard time dealing with knowing about how their shinki died and any shinki that is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that they are dead.

In Summary:
  • Keep the boats off the shore
  • Enjoy the food and booze and spring atmosphere
  • Have some fun with cute little kids
  • Seek counselling if you need it!
  • Flag the mods in the top thread if you'd like an NPC
  • Have fun~

Boy...?

[He repeats the word with some measured incredulity, looking down at himself as though this might tell him why he'd be called that. So far as he can tell, they look about the same age...

...Not that he expects that appearances are entirely reliable, in this place]

I'm not quite sure why I've been selected for this...attention.
galactically: (you won't find a woman as great as me)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-16 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right. Boy. [Emphasis with 100% certainly, then with a light smirk and a teasing tone:] Unless you have a name to go with that cute baby face of yours...

[Sheryl is sure that someone like him should have a name. Everyone does, but what kind of name would he have?

At any rate, she approaches him with a gentle bounce to her walk, hands clasping loosely behind her back, just close enough for her to lean over.]

These kids love you, don't you know? They probably think you're soft.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-17 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Baby-face...

Does she really think he's got a baby-face? Part of him is seized with the impulse to touch his cheek, but he stops himself just shy of doing so]

I'm afraid I'm not inclined to agree, about that.

[If he knew the differences in their statuses he might not state as much so plainly, but as it stands, he thinks these kids are just treating him as a jungle gym]
galactically: (huh?)

sorry for the delay! you know why since you're on my plurk...

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-24 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Hey, Slaine's got the chubby cheeks for such a description that she just gave him. Unless he gives her a name, "Babyface" is what she'll call him.

She tilts her head to one side, forming a small "O" shape with her lips as curiosity strikes her features. He seems to be having some difficulty with those children.]

Want any help with those kids? I know just the way to get them off of you.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-24 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Given her amusement at his predicament, he has to wonder what accepting her help might entail. Still...he can't very well get more work done with keeping boats from shore if children are hanging off of him like this.

At the very least it tanks his mobility, to say nothing of how heavy they are]

And how would you go about that?

[If it's something he can do for himself, he needn't impose on her. But that depends on what her idea is. Asking politely certainly has done him no good, and he can't very well use force with kids...]
galactically: (how fantastic to be with you)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-24 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Right in the middle of Slaine's question is where Sheryl twirls her microphone, to go with the flashy outfit that she's currently donning. If he has any doubts, she'll have to put them to rest somehow.]

Watch and learn, Babyface. [A pause to punctuate, then a wink.] Watch and learn.

[She's no expert in children, but distractions are something she's known to create back in her world, and if she can successfully release Slaine from their tiny grips...

Taking a deep breath, Sheryl projects her voice into the microphone as she begins to dance, a catchy tune pouring out from her lips.]

Let me know what you want, I will give you!
How fantastic to be with you, oooh whoa...!

[Her dance moves are improvised, just like the way she makes dramatic arm gestures, getting swept up by her own passion. Now she has to ensure the children are actually dancing. Will this work?]

Darling, what’s the matter with you?
No you, no life — forever yours alright!
Need your heart and need your love
Let’s be happy! Love and peace!

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Of the things Slaine might've imagined someone doing to get kids to let go, bursting into a song and dance number was certainly not among them. He doesn't know what to think of this, much less the outfit and microphone- ah.

Is this a god?

A god calling him Babyface?

What is his afterlife...?

When he glances down the kids at least seem distracted by the spectacle, so there's some hope they'll give up their hold on him unless they just keep right on gawking. No doubt they're unused to anyone doing this sort of thing in real life either]
galactically: (listen to my song!)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-24 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Step one of Operation: Free Babyface is currently underway — the path to distraction.

Sheryl can feel the curious eyes of those children locked onto her as she continues her impromptu song and dance number. So far, so good.]

3, Hey I count down…
2, Are you ready?
1, I can no longer wait…
0, to give this love to you!

[Now on to the tricky part a.k.a step two: making sure that Slaine successfully pulls away from the tiny audience. These kids seem to be a stubborn bunch as they're not even dancing... Mid-song, she gives him a secretive glance, one that practically screams "get out of there right now, boy!"]

What ‘bout my star...!

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-24 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
[The pointed look is enough indication that he ought to try and make a move, so he does, carefully nudging free of the little kids. It's obvious just how cautious he's being, far from wanting to injure these children in the process of getting out of their clutches.

Almost too cautious, which suggests either his inexperience or lack of recollection.

At least it seems to have worked since those kids have their eyes glued on her]
galactically: (it's a long long goodbye)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-24 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Occasionally her eyes flicker in between the kids and Slaine mid-performance, but she finally settles her gaze on the boy, noting how cautious he's moving. It's like he's a turtle with a rock balancing on its head. In other words, so sloooow...

Luckily he's free from the clutches, so it all seems to work out. She's mentally sighing in relief.

The song winds down to its last verse by the time Sheryl draws out her voice, softening up and letting the final note linger in the air.]

Let me know what you want, I would give you!
How fantastic to be with you... my love

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-04-25 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Slaine finds himself uncertain whether he should leave or stay in the area, but he supposed that he should thank her for the help. Unusual as her methods are, they were effective, and there's no denying results.

So he folds his arms against his back and waits...while keeping an eye on those kids in case they rebound, of course]
galactically: (you continued to smile so gracefully)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-04-29 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sheryl tends to achieve results, even if her eccentricities confuse people more often than not. Either way, some of the kids are actually approaching her, curious wide eyes all on her as she bends down to their level. There's something about the children from this area that brings a serene smile to her face. Maybe it's the innocence, or they're so playful.]

He's really fun, isn't he?

[One of the tiny kids actually nods in response with a giggle.]

Aah, I thought so. [To Slaine:] My name is Sheryl, by the way. Sheryl Nome.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Although she'd already seen fit to call him babyface, he supposes he ought to respond in kind]

Call me Slaine, unless you prefer otherwise.

[He honestly won't fight her on a nickname, even if it seems silly]
galactically: (so fly)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Slaine...

[She murmurs that name, rolling it off her tongue before she grins. Slaine as in, the verb that means to kill?]

Mm, all right. I'll remember that.

[But she'll still call him babyface... There's a pause before she stands upright and saunters over to his side.]

Well then! Now this means you'll have to start paying up for my service. They don't come cheap.

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-03 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, perhaps he should've expected she'd want something.

Most don't do something for nothing, right?]

I don't have much by way of money right now, if you mean monetary compensation.

[And by much, he meant any, at this juncture. He was quite new after all]
galactically: (you won't find a woman as great as me)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-03 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
[... Oh. Oh.

Of course most people would equate services to money, but she can't help but laugh, waving a hand dismissively.]

Who says anything about money, hmm?

[She points to the luxurious buffet tables, then at Slaine... then at herself.]
Edited (typos...) 2016-05-03 03:03 (UTC)

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure what else I could provide you with...

[Money seemed the most basic, and most universal, of forms of compensation.

What else could she safely assume that he would have?

Slaine hasn't the first idea]
galactically: (Alto you're never getting laid)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-05 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
My, are you really this slow?

[She proceeds to rest her hands on her hips, tossing him an unimpressed look in his direction.]

There's no way I'm going to the buffet by myself. I'd be bored to death!

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
...You just want company?

[His company? He's not exactly the most engaging presence...

Not to mention, she's a god. While Slaine understands his own wanting to have him around, why would another god want a shinki's company, when they aren't theirs?]
galactically: (bikini-clad fairy)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-07 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Now you're using your brain, babyface.

[Which is Sheryl's way of saying "hell yes, I want your company!" Boredom tends to manifest differently within herself, and if she wants something, she'll get it — come hell or high water.]

I won't be taking no for an answer, by the way. Consider yourself warned.

[Cue a wink and a charming smile.]

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-07 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Although I don't understand your choice of repayment...I do owe you.

[And it helps his perspective if he sees how other gods act.

Then he can know whether his own behaves in a manner that's unusual, or if it's typical. Somehow, he seems quite odd how well he's been treated. like he shouldn't expect as much]
galactically: (get up and soar!)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-07 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's right, you do. [A firm nod and a determined look.] Now come on, Slaine! It's time to eat!

[She wastes no time in hooking an arm around his, tugging him around like he's her purse as she runs past the children. But not before she gives them a wave of farewell, of course.]

Bye, my precious boys and girls! It's been nice singing with you all!

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-15 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[He stumbles when he's pulled along, but he manages to catch himself when she pauses to wave. This god is certainly assertive, and it reminds him to some degree of his own god...

Though there are certainly differences]

You... I assume you like to sing?
galactically: (a freshly-picked pretty chance)

[personal profile] galactically 2016-05-15 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Sheryl resumes in tugging Slaine along, and in a way it reminds her of when she pulled Alto around Frontier... except this shinki is a ball of fluff compared to him.]

Oh? I love to sing. I'm a pro at it, you know.

[In case the strong vocal cords, how Sheryl controls the rise and fall of her voice, and her impromptu choreography didn't tip him off.]

What about you? Do you like to sing?

[personal profile] ex_adept179 2016-05-15 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I've ever tried... I don't really remember much.

[Except for his name, really. Some things feel familiar, but beyond that he doesn't have the first idea of what he may or may not have liked to do.

He's glad that he's been able to help out today though...even if he couldn't do that with kids hanging off of him]
