[ She feels that panic on his part, and guilt begins to wash over her. Has their relationship thus far caused him to not want to displease or disappoint her to the point that he feels panic? His answer is formal and to the point, as usual, and clearly explains his stance, but there's no doubt about it that he feels badly for letting her down. Yet him letting her down is only because she's gotten her hopes up in the first place. Thus he's wrong to apologize, he didn't cause her to think that, she only believed it on her own. She should have known better.

She should have kept her emotions more in check.

Sanae removes her hands from his, but the movement is only symbolic as she withdraws into herself. Reels in her sadness, her disappointment before it can be expressed, lest it make him feel worse. She doesn't want that, a relationship based on him trying to please her and him feeling sorry when he doesn't. That's not a friendship. ]
