Ebisu is certainly popular to this day. You can see images of him in restaurants that serve fish, and he is frequently worshiped by businessmen. I don't know if I would use the word "love", but the people do seek out his favor to help with their problems.

And much like the god in your story, Ebisu had to endure plenty of hardships. Perhaps people can relate better to a god that has suffered life's cruelties, and respect him for maintaining his cheerful demeanor.
