Who: Urashima Kotetsu and you
What: Urashima regains a turtle, immediately tries to get rid of the turtle, adopts the turtle, then loses it right away when said turtle wanders into random temples.

A. The Beach, the Near Shore | 31 May

( Let's say you're minding your own business and for some reason, that business has brought you to the beach. The sun is shining, the weather is warm, the sea is blue, and there are people everywhere. You know what else is everywhere? Seagulls. Nearby, a group of beach goes shriek as seagulls beset them, trying to take their picnic lunch away from them because some fool thought it was a good idea to toss a french fry in their direction.

All in all, it's going to be a good day! Unless you run into a certain ayakashi that may or may not be plaguing this particular beach.

… But there sure is a lot of screaming, isn't there? And it's not coming from the terrorized picnickers… )

— Wait, wait! ( This screaming sure does sound close. ) Give her back—!

( A flock of seagulls fly over you, fluttering in place, squawking in distress. If you look up, you'll see a small, round object fall from the sky. Maybe it's enough time to get out of the way or catch it! Otherwise, you're going to get conked on the head by a turtle shell and fluff. And if that wasn't bad enough you'll end up body slammed by a distressed shinki who was just trying to catch it. You came here to have a good time and you're getting attacked. )

Oof! S-sorry…

B. Various Temples, the Far Shore* | 1-2 June

( After a day or two, it isn't certain if Urashima's adopted the turtle or if the turtle has adopted him. Every time he's tried to get rid of it, it's always managed to come back. He leaves it on the beach in the Near Shore and not only does it manage to come back to the Far Shore but it's in his bed again! He tried to drop it off at a pond in the Far Shore instead but, again, it'd managed to come back. It doesn't really make sense and after awhile, he's just given up because it clearly doesn't want him to go.

…

So of course, once he's decided to keep it, it disappears on it's own. If this had been the day before, he'd probably be okay with it but he's attached now. As soon as he notices it's missing, he's taken to looking out for it.

And lucky for him, you've managed to find it. Some how, this turtle has managed to wander into your temple space. How did it get pass the tricks and traps and trials that were designed to keep people out? And then how did it get into your kitchen or swimming pool or bathroom or rock garden? Who knows. It's just there now and you'll know who it belongs to one of two ways!

The first way is by network post. Urashima posts a quick, short message on the network, )

Has anyone seen a turtle? It's small and gold and has a fluffy tail. Let me know! Thank you.

( Or maybe you find Urashima himself. If your temple is particularly questionable trespassers, he'll be right outside the entrance. Otherwise, if it's on the safer side or a temple he's been to before, he'll wander in a little bit and call out, )

Excuse me! Is anyone here?! Kameko... where are you?

(( * For this prompt, we can start off as text/voice and move into action. Also, you don't have to find Kamekichi right away-- we can have them go on dumb turtle quest together. She's a ~mysterious~ turtle and can wander anywhere that isn't immediately dangerous. She's always sleeping and doesn't appear to react to much of anything. ))

I've been calling her Kameko... but she doesn't really answer to it.

At Bishamonten-sama’s temple.

[He gets the feeling that there’s more to this somehow, but he’s a bit distracted by the turtle with the highly unusual but adorable fluffy tail.]

I called her Kameko and I think she scowled at me...
It’d make sense for a pet to take a while to learn its name, but if she just doesn’t like it, you should try calling her something else.

I'm coming!

( An while he's hurrying over, he shoots a text whenever he stops for one reason or another-- to reorient himself or something. Give him a few ~~and me another comment~~ and he'll be there. )

I've been trying! But she doesn't like Kamechan either! It's hard thinking of a name!!!

I'll meet you at the main entrance then. This place is huge- you'd never find us otherwise.

[As he's walking there, mildly disgruntled-looking turtle in hand, he pauses to read the text.]

How about a name from a famous story? I'd name cats Schro-kun and Dinger-chan! And I'd name dogs Pau-chan and Lov-kun!

( A name from a story sounds like a good idea and he actually has a couple that immediately come to mind.... But he's rushing to go meet Yukine first. If Yukine rubs her shell and pets her tail, she'll eventually warm up to him. Aftera ll, Yukine's not the one who forgot her!!! Her salt has nothing to do with this sweet boy...

When Urashima arrives, he's out of breath. He's clearly run all the way here from who knows where. )

Kamechan! ( Wheeze, ) I'm... here...! Yukine-kun...

( As soon as he sees them though, he practically recovers in an instant, )

Is she okay? Did she get in trouble?!

[Yukine is glad that trying to make amends seems to be working on the turtle. She’s unusual but cute, so he wants to be friends.

Sitting in the shade of the estate gate Yukine springs to his feet in worry when the exhausted-looking Urashima comes running up, but it seems that his priorities are on the turtle.
(It's 'Kamechan' now?)
He smiles reassuringly.]

She seems to be fine. She was, um, about to dive into the toilet. Though how she even got up it that far is beyond me... [Then Yukine’s smile turns a bit embarrassed.] Actually, if anything, I was the one that got in trouble. I didn’t realize that the fluffy part was attached, and pulled on it. I don’t seem to have hurt her, but she looked kinda upset. Sorry. [The apology is directed at the turtle again, although he also means it towards her owner. He carefully rubs her shell again.]

( Yukine is an acceptable boy, even if he tried to pull on her tail too hard. The rubs were enough to soothe her and hs'ell forgive Yukine... for now. Maybe even come back for a visit.

And is it Kamechan now? Because the turtle sure doesn't look very pleased. She opens her mouth in a great, big yaaaaawn and if turtles could make noises, she'd be roaring at Urashima right now. What an awful name! )

The toilet? ( Urashima looks at her incredulously and frowns beacuse... she doesn't look very happy to see him? How he can tell when she just looks like she's sleeping? Who knows! But he can tell. ) What's the matter? Do you like it more here?

( No response. The silent treatment, huh? )

Eh... Kamechan... ( Urashima looks up at Yukine. ) I don't think she's mad at you anymore...

[Yukine looks between the turtle and Urashima with a strained smile. Did she yawn in her owner’s face and fall asleep? He huffs a laugh under his breath.]

I think maybe you’re right.

So, why ‘Kamechan’? ‘Cause that’s really kindergarten. And sure, she’s cute, but don’t you think the fluffy part makes her look majestic too?

[The turtle seems to understand them well. So for sure ~~Urashima~~ they should pick a name that she can approve of. (Yukine is really warming up to this.)]

I only just met her, you know!

( How is he supposed to come up with a name when he spent most of their time together trying to get rid of her and the other half losing her? )

Eh? She's really pretty... but she's cute too!

( Kamekichi might be preening. Her shell looks especially polished and her tail a little more fluffy... )

Really? I didn't know that.

[But back to the subject at hand.]

Right? And she's a turtle, so she's got to be wise. Mmm. A little mysterious too. [How else would you put the way she got up on the toilet like that...]

[Yukine holds out the turtle towards Urashima, smiling slightly.]

Doesn't all that make you think of names more interesting than Kamechan?

( There's definitely a name that comes to mind and he gives it a try, )

Otohime...? ( She let's out a silent turtle yawn-roar. No! ) Uuu.... Himechan?

( And there's one, short flick of the tail. It's not exactly happy but it isn't snappy either. )

Ohh, you're getting warmer. Good job! I wonder if she likes the 'hime' part. [For all that she rejected Otohime.]

What do you think? Do you want this guy to keep guessing? [Yukine's talking to the turtle, of course. Please pardon him a moment.]

( The "Kame" part is actually closer than any other guess so far but Urashima's just a dumb sword boy and Kamekichi's honestly given up. Himechan will suffice. For now and she yawns once-- this one being considerably less roar-like. If turtles could shrug, she would. )

Himechan? ( That looks like an okay. ) Himechan, then!

It's pretty and cute at the same time, don't you think?

( Looking at Yukine. Agree with him!!! )

Mmm. [Serious consideration.] I think the 'chan' is a bit too cutetsy for her. But yep, it is pretty and cute, which suits her.

And, most important, she doesn't seem to mind it. What a smart turtle~! [Yukine rubs her shell and pats the tail carefully.]

( Kamekichi deserves to be a Himesama, tbh.... but alas! Yukine definitely seems to have a thing with animals, though. She looks pretty content right, tail flicking happily, and looking a little more polished now and Urashima just sort of... frowns. )

Eh... it looks like she likes you a lot, Yukine-kun. ( A lot more than him, at least. ) Maybe she'd be happier here...

( Which gets her to stop for a moment. )

[For all that he doesn't know Urashima-kun well, Yukine thinks a frown looks more than a little out of place on him. He's just that kind of guy.

And he pauses himself when Himechan's tail stops flicking happily back and forth at Urashima's comment.]

Huh? Happier? At Bishamonten-sama's place? No, no no. I wouldn't say so- she has a lion, after all. You wouldn't any accidents to happen...

[Not that he seriously thinks that Kuraha would harm the turtle. But still.
Don't worry, Yukine knows what you meant. He grins reassuringly at the boy.]

Don't worry, Urashima-kun. I'm just the indulgent uncle that will spoil her anytime, but you're the one she'll go home to at the end of the day.

[ (Trying to sound cool and senpai-ish without knowing the whole situation, go.) ]

( Urashima remembers that lion and honestly, after seeing Kamekichi take on a certain demon rooster, he feels like she could take a lion on too... But he won't say as much right now. It's something someone has to see to believe. )

You think so?

( And he leans a little closer, coming down to be at eye level with that sleepy turtle. Of course she'd always go back with him-- even if Urashima doesn't remember her, the two have been together since the day his spirit was born. It's probably why they always find each other in the end too. )

I don't mind if she visits. ( She's a free turtle. ) But it's scary when I don't know where she is.

( And he reaches out to pet her which she doesn't mind at all. )

Thanks for finding her for me, Yukine-kun.

[Yukine glances off to the side in embarrassment for a moment at that honest thanks.]

You were the one actually looking for her.

[He pauses a beat as he holds out the turtle for him to take. He can understand the feeling of being scared, even if it seems to be for ‘no particular reason’. It just is.]

If I happen across her again, I can shoot you a text. It’s not a big deal to do that much. [His expression suddenly breaks into a grin as he gives a short laugh-] Although I don’t know how often that’d be. This isn’t my place. [He jerks a thumb behind him at Bishamonten’s residence.] I’m actually on the Near Shore way more often, so it’s not like she can visit me there without you taking her.

[ (So he assumes. He is underestimating how mysterious of a turtle she is…) ]
