[open] Look for the bare necessities~
Who: OPEN OPEN OPEN
What: People teaming up to check out a giant abandoned temple and look for hidden treasure, clues or just want to get into some trouble
Where: An abandoned temple ruin in the heavens
When: June 13
Warnings: TBA
Note: This is a create-a-top-level or open/closed prompts or tag around log (mod approved!) it was first mentioned on this post!
[ Outside the Temple ]
The temple is located deep inside a heavily forested part of the heavens. Outside of the temple is littered with overgrown plants and roots and crumbling rocks and rubble. Most of it seems undisturbed and serene like no one has been this way in hundreds of years. Occasionally monkey and spider spirits can be seen crawling over cracked pillars or hiding in dark corners. Looking around you might find pictures of nameless faces etched into stone or old brass and copper coins under rocks or in the dirt. Beware of pitfalls.
[ Outer Sanctum ]
Immediately inside the temple is the Outer Sanctum which is filled with spots of sunlight. The place glitters with light from the sun trickling in from the broken and cracked roof. Pillars and walls gleam with jewels and precious stones ripe for the taking. If certain gems are disturbed you might hear slight rumblings in the distance or the floor might shake but nothing else of interest happens.
If you stay here long enough you might hear the chirping of bird spirits but there are none in sight. The birds will chatter and whisper in your ear with sing song tunes. Call back to them and they might just swoop and attack you. If killed they turn into sapphires.
[ Left Wing ]
The left wing is dark and many doors are locked or set with traps. Broken furniture litters the wing like a massive fight happened here. Dust settles on everything like a thick fog. If you enter some of the rooms you will find libraries and study halls. Most of the books crumble into dust when you touch them. There are tapestries all along the walls of a young Amaterasu. They can be taken off the walls and do not crumble like the books do. The ones that might catch your eye are the ones depicting her hiding in a cave from dark looming figures.
Dig enough through these rooms and you might find some strange trinkets:
- A branch that shakes when it is going to rain soon
- A jar of yellow ink that slowly turns black over several days
- A small leather book with several names of hafuri shinki inside
- A brass lamp engraved with a map of the heavens in ancient times when lit
- A leather bracer that gives you monstrous claws when worn
- A ring which if you put on you can’t remove but your godly power seems slightly enhanced
[ Right Wing ]
The right wing makes it hard for you to breathe inside. Some sort of shade or haze fills these halls and your head starts to hurt the longer you stay in this wing. The rooms that you find are all open and no door is locked but there are several puzzles to be found. You will find abandoned weaponry rooms and storage rooms. The strangest room you might find is the room filled with opened and empty human caskets. Many jars and old boxes scatter the halls in which some of them are broken some of them are intact.
Dig enough through these rooms and you might find some strange trinkets:
- A necklace with red jewels that seems to slightly enhance shinki borderlines
- An amulet set with a carved carnelian that makes you feel warm when you wear it
- A sealed box with no openings that sounds like there might be bugs crawling around inside
- A pouch with several mix matched diamond and gold earrings inside
- A golden statue in the shape of a praying Amaterasu
- A katana with no sheath that is broken and chipped but has a gold chain wrapped around it
[ Inner Sanctum ]
First you are met with a giant set of sealed doors that seem nearly impossible to open. The doors are covered with ancient characters that are unreadable unless you have a way to decipher it. The doors seem immovable by normal strength or magic and only by god or shinki powers once you are lucky enough to stumble on this fact or have a way to read the doors. Once you find this fact or have a way to read the messages, use a god or shinki power (of any sort) and the doors will slowly crack open to a dark Inner Sanctum.
The Inner Sanctum is one large chamber with several chairs and a large table in the center. There are melted down candles everywhere. Inside you find absolutely nothing else of interest. Hope you didn’t spend too much time trying to get the doors open, Wanderer. But does this mean someone got here before you?
Someone with a keen eye might notice the small box tucked away somewhere. Inside the box is a large glowing amethyst. If it is removed the monkey spirits outside the temple will attack everyone on sight.

(Left Wing)
Stepping closer to her he stops and hesitates when he notices that her eyes are closed, and he gives a small start when she abruptly opens them and speaks to him.]
Ah. Sure?
[As directed he takes one step to his left and looks at her questioningly. He doesn’t know her well enough to say she’s acting weird, but she’s a new god, so weird will be a give-in at some point.]
What’s going on?
no subject
Sorry. You were obstructing this part of the room. I'm looking for panels and possible hidey-holes. And I can't do that if I can't see the whole room...see what's out of place.
[Shifting through the stuff, she seems interested in what's underneath, more than anything in it.]
Help me move some of this old wood, if you please.
no subject
[Putting on a pair of work gloves he helps shift the pile. Seeing as she doesn’t seem too interested in the junk, he isn’t overly careful and therefore goes quickly.]
That’s amazing, that you can tell just by looking. You must have a lot of experience.
Do you think we’ll find anything good in here? [You bet he wants to walk away with something at the end of all this.]
no subject
[Shifting quickly is fine, Lara’s in agreement, and working quickly they get the junk pile out of the way to reveal a rotten wooden trapdoor. It’s falling apart, the hinges are rusty, but it’s there. Some sort of floor safe?]
Who can say? It was deliberately hidden by the look of it. You may want to step back, in case something comes out. Be ready.
no subject
Once they get to the trapdoor Yukine perks up. Standing back he raises his hand, ready to draw a borderline.]
I got you covered.
no subject
[Lara pries upwards, flipping over the stone and revealing...
a horde of centipedes that come scuttling out! And some stuff, but right now there's about a dozen bugs rushing right for them.]
Oh! Eugh!
no subject
[With a strangled shout Yukine starts slashing borderlines at the centipedes. Which doesn't help the creepy-factor, as the severed bodies continue squirming.]
Ugh- Ugh! --Line!
[Drawing a line in front of himself and Lara, the final stragglers squirm their way out without getting close to them thanks to the border.
With a shudder Yukine watches them go, his fingers still extended.]
Ugh, that's gross. I don't really care about bugs one way or the other, but that was overkill.
no subject
Well maybe. But at least you have good reflexes.
[Flashing a smile, she steps around and looks down into the hole they've made, noticing a couple of things.]
Looks like we found some treasure, too. Stuff someone too a lot of trouble to hide.
no subject
[Yukine is still a little strained from that surprise, but he'll take the compliment.
He then leans over the hole too, his expression brightening.]
You found it so easily, Lara-sama! I want to see what they hid-
[He starts to reach out one hand, but pauses quickly.]
I should let you handle it. You're the expert. [He'll just watch and learn.]
no subject
Not much to it really. Once we've found the artifacts it's more a matter of identifying them and figuring out if they have a use.. Thoughts on what the liquid could be?
no subject
Instead, he focuses on Lara-sama's question. It'd be cool if he could figure it out! Peering closely at the jar of yellow something, he grimaces at the colour.]
Something that used to be edible but went bad? But nah- that wouldn't make sense to hide something that'd go bad.
[Taking the bottle from her carefully, he also gives it a little shake.]
Mm. Dunno. I suppose the way it sticks to the glass reminds me of paint, but why would you hide paint?
no subject
It could be of religious significance. Not everything hidden has to have anything extraordinary about it, other than perhaps being rare.
[She pops open the bottle and waves some of it her way, like her chemistry teachers would've instructed...]
Smells like ink. What do you think? [She offers it up for him.]
no subject
It’s absolutely ink. Going by the smell.
… Rare ink? I kinda wonder if it does anything, then. Other than write. In yellow. For however useful that’d be on white paper.
no subject
[She pockets it and the bracer, looking around the room again.]
Anything catch your eye in here, Yukine?
no subject
--Me?
[Putting thoughts of science aside at Lara's question, Yukine looks around the room slowly, shining his flashlight in a slow circle as he turns. He thinks about what she was looking for- something 'out of place.' Even though he's not sure what he's looking for, he wants to try.]
... Do rooms usually have more than one treasure-hiding-place in them though?
[Nothing is really jumping out at him, but he goes for a second slow circle.]
no subject
[Kiddo, you're actually kind of cute, okay? That's pretty amusing.
She'll quietly let him make a couple of passes before answering, but there's a hint of amusement to her tone.]
Not treasure. I don't believe there's any of that. I meant the tapestries, actually.
no subject
[He'd like to learn about chemistry like that.
Looking at the tapestries, it occurs to him.]
Oh- they aren't all decayed and crumbling into dust! Things like wood and cloth are usually the first things to go, right?
[Standing in front of one and shining his light on it, he tilts his head a little. A young woman hiding in what seems to be a cave, with dark figures crouching outside it.]
I'm not sure what it's of. But it's a little weird that the inside of the cave seems brighter than the outside.
[He would be sensitive to something like that, especially now...
(And sorry. For all he lives here, his knowledge of Japanese gods sucks.) ]
no subject
[Standing next to him, Lara smiles as she recognizes the story, at least in part.]
You're not sure?
[No teasing in her voice, just curiosity, and a chance to teach. Pointing to the woman and the light, she starts...]
This is Amaterasu, the kami of the sun. That's why the cave's so bright. You definitely know her, since she's...around. The cave is Ama-no-Iwato, the Heavenly Rock Cave, translated literally, and she's in hiding after her brother Susanoo decided to throw a tantrum and destroy her rice fields. I imagine the shapes are some of his minions, or perhaps ayakashi since this world's stories are a little different.
no subject
[Definitely kinda knows her, yep.]
Heh. Even though I only met the guy who replaced Susano'o-sama, that sounds about right for him.
no subject
[Reaching out to touch one, she gives it a little shake, kicking up dust.]
Almost fresh, even.
no subject
They aren't as old as they look? Or ...as the temple makes them look?
no subject
[Who knows, really, how all this stuff works. She doesn't...]
no subject
[He has even less of an idea than she does.
Looking back up at the tapestry he shrugs slightly and grins at her, already expecting the answer but asking anyway.]
Are you going to try and take one of these out of here?
no subject
[And is she going to risk damaging a valuable artifact? No sir!]
no subject
Well, they probably aren't going anywhere.
...Anyway, thanks a lot, Lara-sama. I learned a lot. I'll see if I can't find some stuff myself now!
