Man, you're a wuss, byon. [Ken's expression is somewhere between amused and condescending.] Of course you're gonna get bit if you let something like that scare you, duh. If you act like a baby, even a chihuahua can look like a badass by pushing you around, byon. [He takes a big bite off one of the skewers, his next words somewhat indistinct.] That's why you don't let anybody push you around, byon. If you're the scariest, you don't have to be scared of anything else 'cause everything else is scared of you!

[Except that never seem to work. No matter how many scary and intimidating people he's beaten in his short career as a mafioso heir, the enemies keep growing and the challenges seem to become even greater!]

It just seems as if someone even scarier might confront you eventually.

So? [Ken shrugs.] The world's not gonna go easy on you just 'cause you stay weak, byon. Being tougher and scarier than some things is better than being weak and afraid of everything. More bad stuff happens to weak people than to strong people, byon.

[Why is he so sure of that? He's not sure, but he's completely confident in the words.]

So you should always try to be as strong as possible.

[What do you mean by "So?"?! Someone has to fight them! He doesn't want to fight at all!

Though it isn't because he expects people to go easy on him! He doesn't want to be weak, but being strong comes with it's problems too. Though he has to admit being strong has helped him in many situations. Having the power to protect his friends did give him confidence.]

I see your point. I don't like to be weak, and if I was stronger I wouldn't have half as many problems as I do. Though how do you become stronger?

[He didn't have Reborn here to tell him these things. He needed to find out these things on his own.]

I dunno. [Ken looks momentarily thoughtful.] I don't remember how I got strong...and Chikusa says my channels and stuff aren't good for fighting here, so I guess I'm probably not that strong here yet. But I'm gonna get strong for Hestia, byon. [He says this with faint pride.] So maybe if you wanna be strong, you have to have something to be strong for...?

Hestia must be your god, right?

[He nods. He didn't really have friends here, but if he were to gain them, he could be stronger for them.]

I guess, I do have to find it. Whatever makes me stronger for them. I don't have a shinki yet, so maybe I'll start there!

Yeah. He takes care of us, byon. [Tsuna will recognize that fierce pride and loyalty in Ken's voice and stance right now; without his memories, Ken's intense loyalty to Mukuro appears to have transferred into loyalty to his god. What Mukuro would make of this, one shudders to think.

In the meantime, Ken blinks bemusedly at Tsuna as he processes the other thing the boy said.] You can be a god without shinki? I thought gods needed their shinki, byon.

[Tsuna does notice it, but he feels like it's kind of misplaced. He expect such adulation for Mukuro and not anyone else. Although, he's never met this Hestia he wonders if they are a good person? They must be if Ken holds them in high esteem.

He the shrugs.]

I don't really know how it works, but that's what I've been told. Though I think what you say is true, it seems I can't really do much without one.

[Not that he has tried it, or anything.]

Me and Chikusa. That's Hestia's other shinki, byon. [Which means Ken and Chikusa are working as partners, for someone not Mukuro, without even remembering each other. This is an interesting situation you've discovered, Tsuna.

How does a god get a shinki, anyway? [Ken's never considered this before.] Do shinki just show up when they die?

Him,too? [ Tsuna says it a bit thoughtlessly, since he knows he should feign ignorance. He knows them both, but Ken doesn't know that or remember.

I don't know. I don't have a shinki to really ask. But how were you assigned to your god? Did you just pop up in front of them?

[Luckily, Tsuna, Ken doesn't find this weird. Chikusa's surprisingly social, for someone with the average exertion level of a terminally ill sloth. Ken just chalks Tsuna up as another person who already knows Chikusa from around the Far Shore and doesn't question it. Instead, he ponders Tsuna's question.]

I just remember appearing all of a sudden, byon. I guess it was after I died. And then Axel-sama found me and told me he was my god and that I'm supposed to serve him. [Which had been a relief; suddenly appearing in a strange place, with no memories, would have left Ken completely lost and unhappy without any direction or anyone to cling to.]

[Tsuna tries his best to keep his face unreadable when Ken mentioned he died. When was this? Even if he didn't get along with the Kokuyo gang, he will never wish anyone to die. It kind of hurts him to realize that in their world, Ken is considered deceased.

He decides to question Ken about his god, since it seems more safer to ask about that.]

So that's how it works? How did they know you were meant to be their shinki?

[Now he wonders if he has a shinki wandering the festival looking for him? Though that isn't the case, he was already informed upon arrival that he didn't have one and was offered a stand in for time being. In the same way he was briefed upon arrival, he'll probably be told whether he was assigned one or not.]

Were you happy to meet them for the first time?

I dunno. He just came up to me and explained things to me, byon. He said I was his, so he knew I belonged to him right away...but I never asked how he knew. [And now that Tsuna's mentioned it, Ken is curious himself.

At the question, he nods.] I was in a strange place and I didn't remember anything, byon. If I wasn't his shinki, I don't know what I could do instead...I guess I would've just wandered around lost and confused. [From the way his brow furrows, he clearly doesn't find that idea appealing.] And there's ayakashis, too. Chikusa says you can't fight 'em normally, and that I'd get blighted if I bit them. So if I hadn't become Hestia's shinki and learned that stuff, I'd've probably died again.

[ Tsuna finds this interesting. He always wonders how he'll know when he's near his shinki. And maybe it's as simple as 'you just know'. So Tsuna decides to not worry about it and leave it to fate.

He nods as Ken continues. To be honest, he hasn't seen many wandering shinki around, maybe it's for their safety that they get attached to a god quickly. Though the most surprising information to Tsuna is the fact you can die...again?!]

Eeeh?! Die again? So then after that, you just disappear? How does that even work?!

[Ken shrugs.] I dunno. I think you can disappear even without dying here, so I dunno what dying does, byon. [His expression clouds over.] ...there was this girl, Chrome...she was nice to me. She disappeared already.

[Tsuna's going to love hearing that.]

EH?! Chrome?!

[She was here? When? Where? It must have been recently if Ken remembers her so fondly. Then he decides to pull back his surprise. He's not supposed to make it too obvious that he knows people from their world.]

[He shifts his face from surprised to pensive.]

That's an unusual name for a girl. But I hope she's okay. I hope when she disappeared, she went to somewhere safe.

[Tsuna really hopes Chrome doesn't get a cruel fate. He hopes disappearing just means returning home.]

I dunno, byon. [Ken looks despondent. Being surprised by someone as nice as Chrome, only to lose her immediately, still stings.] I thought heaven was supposed to be the nicest place somebody could go, but it's just like anywhere else. And she was a goddess, byon. If this place isn't safe for a god, I don't think anywhere is.

[ It already seems like Ken isn't hopeful, and perhaps he knows more about the situation than Tsuna does. He definitely does if he can speak of the heavens as he does. Tsuna has been suspicious of them ever since he arrives, now he's given more proof to be distrustful.]

That's true. I never heard of a place that just fills in gods and goddesses like this. Do you think something bigger is going on?

[Now he's very worried about Chrome. Really hoping she's good and well.]

Dunno. [Ken shrugs in a way that says he has never really thought about it and never really plans to. Thinking and speculating are Chikusa's bag, not his. If it weren't for Chrome's disappearance and Ken's melancholy about that, he probably wouldn't even have put as much thought into the subject as his previous statements would suggest.] I'm just a shinki, byon.

I guess I'm asking too much of you...sorry. [ Some people just don't want to be involved, and that's fair. Plus it seems the gods really had the power to do things, Tsuna just has to figure out how he could help.]

Anyway, I hope you eat more tasty food. [That hasn't fallen on the floor!] I should probably get some more too.

Okay. [Ken takes another bite off of one of his (rescued? stolen?) skewers, studying Tsuna briefly.] Hey, what's your name?

[You forget, Tsuna - you know Ken, but he doesn't know you. And you haven't had any kind of introduction. Then again, Ken's not one to stick at formalities, so he's not going to complain about the lack of manners.]

[ Tsuna has to hold back making a confused face. He keeps forgetting that Ken and others from his world don't remember him. Seeing his mistake, he apologizes.]

Sorry, I thought I gave it to you already. [ He must have been distracted by the whole fact that you stole his food. That's even more of a violation of manners.]

[ He's still not sure if he needs to add in what god he is...] And what's your name?

Ken Joshima. [He takes another bite.] If you see any other little dogs, just bark at 'em, byon. If you're scarier and stronger than them, they're not gonna bother you.

[And with that, Ken wanders off. Aside from the laughter and mockery, Tsuna just had a semi-civil conversation with him...]
