Ren offers him a very fragile smile. "Actually, you're the one who brought them home. That one is Kishi, by the way," he says, gesturing at the kitten in Hibari's arms. "You could probably already tell, but he likes you the most. The other three are still downstairs..."

But he isn't sure how Hibari will take smiling at the moment, so it's gone pretty quickly once he's done taking about the cats, he's back to looking...pretty sad, actually.

"If I could have brought you back, I would have, but I don't think I'm the one who did. I wasn't anywhere near you, for one thing."

Maybe he did through sheer power of will and feelings of devastation--and if he were told that was it, he'd probably believe it, since sheer power of will is pretty darn powerful in his experience--but he really doesn't think so.

"Anyway, you don't have to believe me." He almost adds "I can't force you," but Hibari has always been so touchy about being forced to do anything that he decides he better not. "But Kishi knows you. Isn't that proof that you've been here? You might have some things on the roof too. I haven't been up there to look, but I know you like to sleep up there."
