Summary: The Near Shore needs a little protecting from the dead



The last few days have been filled with festival food, high energy, and lots and lots of parades. Near Shore residents really know how to enjoy their holidays, stopping up traffic for hours on end as floats and palanquins go by and filling the streets and courtyards in the area with food stands and festival treats. Many Far Shore residents may have found themselves drawn to this particular festival, as it is being held in honor of a shrine.

When an unexpected parade starts up, the people gather round to watch the impromptu spectacle. It's a little strange, yes, but nothing too terribly off-putting. That is until the parade reaches the shrine itself, at which point all hell breaks loose as the members of the parade start attacking anything and anyone in their way.

The Heavens will then call upon all the gods and shinki who are available to help, because these attackers are not normal at all - they are, in fact, the undead.



Let the Festivities Continue

The festival is a large, booming one. There are dozens upon dozens of food stalls set up all over the place with so many different kinds of foods that it could make your eyes go buggy, most of them fried in some way. On top of that, there is live entertainment walking around, stalls with souvenirs, and lots of excellent company nearby. Surely you'll be able to enjoy the festival to its fullest.

The Walking Dead

It is not immediately evident that the parade is being manned by corpses, but keen observers would be able to pick out the noticeable rotting elements of the dead. Anyone with a soul-sensing ability might even realize that they're not soulless, just lifeless. When the parade reaches the shrine, every god and shinki will be needed in order to protect the Near Shore from this menace. Corpses must either be exorcised or completely mutilated to the point where they can no longer move in order to release the soul.

Not Rootbeer Floats

On top of the mass of dead bodies being possessed by stray souls, some of the floats on wheels in the parade seem to have been taken over as well. They are moving slowly and with purpose towards anyone that crosses their path. At first, it may seem like the float is just veering a little off course, but it will soon become evident that it's headed towards you. They may be slow, but they're very large as well, meaning there's a lot more than needs to be destroyed to release the soul.

Souls, Souls, and More Souls

As souls are released from the objects they've taken control of, the air will become thick with a hazy fog of souls rushing away, into the air, and out of sight. This may make the continued fighting a little more difficult, but it means that the job is getting done.

Through some innate sixth sense, some of the dead people may seem familiar to certain gods (or shinki with specific memories). They can recognize some of the souls as friends or compatriots from their home world that had died. And these souls will recognize them as well.

Any characters not currently in the game that have actually died in their canon are free to be used for this part of the event and played out as NPCs by you and whatever partner you are playing with. All of these individuals will react in a similar way, though - they will beg to be released because it hurts them so horribly to be here right now and, of course, they can only be released in the same way that all the other souls are being released: exorcism or total destruction.

[ Jakob looks from the rotted gunk on his dagger to Urashima’s glowing expression and makes a face. Sorry, no praising allowed. But as he wipes his dagger on the zombie’s tattered clothes (best he can manage, really), he replies, in a very stern tone indeed: ]

I believe that was utterly the most clumsy and foolish display I have ever seen in my afterlife.

( Ugh, why? He's puffing his cheeks and making a face. Way to go, Jakob. He believed in you for a second there! )

You were going to get squashed.

[ It’s all right; that’s his way of saying he cares…sorta. ]

I had it all quite under control before you so rudely interrupted me. [ Okay, maybe he hasn’t gotten it all completely under control, but still!! ]

( Urashima opens his mouth to argue back.

No you didn't! He could easily snap back but he catches himself, biting his tongue, and twisting his mouth in a disapproving frown. Urashima knows what he saw-- Jakob stuck within himself facing some sort of phantom-- but he isn't going to make that a point. )

"Thank you, Urashima." ( He'll just thank himself for Jakob. ) You're welcome, Mr. Jakob.

( No thanks neccessary! But there's somethign nagging at Urashima. It's his first time actually running into someone he knew with that stunned reaction, )

... Did you know them?

[ Okay, could he be blamed for being a little irritated at having those words put in his mouth, so to speak? Still, he likewise decides not to pursue the matter as he holsters that dagger. There’s a big mess out here that requires his full attention, after all. ]

I should hope not. [ he says it absently, as he’s scanning the area for any more floats. He’s already putting the entire matter out of his mind. ]

( And who is Urashima to argue? It's not like he knows anything about Jakob's tragic and traumatic past. He isn't going to press it but he isn't going to quite leave Jakob alone yet either. He thinks against it at first but then steps over to his side, carefully over the corpse, and looking in the same direction Jakob is, )

... Are you going to find your god too?

[ The mention of his own god does make him bristle so, his agitation showing in that slight frown and those tightly balled fists of his. ]

I don’t have much choice in the matter. [ And whatever “king” zombie tells him, Add is still the better master even if he’s kind of an asshole and also an aggravatingly mad scientist. With a huff: ]

And shouldn’t you be rushing to your master’s side? You’d be a good deal more useful than putting yourself into needless danger like you did earlier on.

( And so it looks like they're both in similar positions now.

He looks up at Jakob and gives him his brightest smile because yes, he does have a god to find. For the first time in a long time, he has a master he can be useful for. It's a good feeling and he's proud and happy to finally, finally be able to do something. )

Heh heh, yeah! I have to go find him now. If you see him, will you tell him I'm I'll find him soon? His name is Terra. I can tell your god the same thing, if you want.

( An open offer. )

[gentilitea]

[ Jakob actually has to look away from that smile, radiating with all the hope and wonder and affection and myriad other shit he has neither the time nor the inclination to deal with right now. ]

Very well. [ He’ll just avoid asking for anyone’s names. Easy.

Waving him off— ]

But stay out of trouble. I will not be fighting off another revenant for you.

Mhm~

( He's already starting to dash off but he'll turn around on his heel, skipping back wards, and hold out his arm, fist balled in the air. If he had his sword, he'd be holding up just like that but right now, it looks like he's just fist bumping in the air, heh. )

( And he sure is running away before Jakob can toss a knife at him or anything. )
