What: Parade of the dead

Summary: The Near Shore needs a little protecting from the dead
The last few days have been filled with festival food, high energy, and lots and lots of parades. Near Shore residents really know how to enjoy their holidays, stopping up traffic for hours on end as floats and palanquins go by and filling the streets and courtyards in the area with food stands and festival treats. Many Far Shore residents may have found themselves drawn to this particular festival, as it is being held in honor of a shrine.
When an unexpected parade starts up, the people gather round to watch the impromptu spectacle. It's a little strange, yes, but nothing too terribly off-putting. That is until the parade reaches the shrine itself, at which point all hell breaks loose as the members of the parade start attacking anything and anyone in their way.
The Heavens will then call upon all the gods and shinki who are available to help, because these attackers are not normal at all - they are, in fact, the undead.

When an unexpected parade starts up, the people gather round to watch the impromptu spectacle. It's a little strange, yes, but nothing too terribly off-putting. That is until the parade reaches the shrine itself, at which point all hell breaks loose as the members of the parade start attacking anything and anyone in their way.
The Heavens will then call upon all the gods and shinki who are available to help, because these attackers are not normal at all - they are, in fact, the undead.
Let the Festivities Continue
- The festival is a large, booming one. There are dozens upon dozens of food stalls set up all over the place with so many different kinds of foods that it could make your eyes go buggy, most of them fried in some way. On top of that, there is live entertainment walking around, stalls with souvenirs, and lots of excellent company nearby. Surely you'll be able to enjoy the festival to its fullest.
The Walking Dead
- It is not immediately evident that the parade is being manned by corpses, but keen observers would be able to pick out the noticeable rotting elements of the dead. Anyone with a soul-sensing ability might even realize that they're not soulless, just lifeless. When the parade reaches the shrine, every god and shinki will be needed in order to protect the Near Shore from this menace. Corpses must either be exorcised or completely mutilated to the point where they can no longer move in order to release the soul.
Not Rootbeer Floats
- On top of the mass of dead bodies being possessed by stray souls, some of the floats on wheels in the parade seem to have been taken over as well. They are moving slowly and with purpose towards anyone that crosses their path. At first, it may seem like the float is just veering a little off course, but it will soon become evident that it's headed towards you. They may be slow, but they're very large as well, meaning there's a lot more than needs to be destroyed to release the soul.
Souls, Souls, and More Souls
- As souls are released from the objects they've taken control of, the air will become thick with a hazy fog of souls rushing away, into the air, and out of sight. This may make the continued fighting a little more difficult, but it means that the job is getting done.
Through some innate sixth sense, some of the dead people may seem familiar to certain gods (or shinki with specific memories). They can recognize some of the souls as friends or compatriots from their home world that had died. And these souls will recognize them as well.
Any characters not currently in the game that have actually died in their canon are free to be used for this part of the event and played out as NPCs by you and whatever partner you are playing with. All of these individuals will react in a similar way, though - they will beg to be released because it hurts them so horribly to be here right now and, of course, they can only be released in the same way that all the other souls are being released: exorcism or total destruction.

But then the souls from the corpses start taking on form and having voices, and it seems a lot of them know Bishamonten-sama.]
Wh-what's going on, Yato? What do you mean, 'again'?
[(For all that he was there for the story about the 'Ma' clan, he hasn't put that together with this yet.)]

And she can just barely make out Yato rebuking her. But his voice is faint, drowned out by the corpses and the spirits calling to her and begging to be saved.
He body moves before her mind can.
It's the primal cry that finally erupts from her as she pulls Saiki from the ground and sweeps him out in a wide arc. The strike comes a little too close to Yato at some point but her main target are the corpses coming for her. ]
STOP IT!
[ It's clear that scream was meant toward the spirits calling her name. Another wide sweep before she slumps forward once, head lowered as if to recover from those two sudden outbursts. ]
....Yato. Take them out. They deserve to rest.
[ Not this time, buddy. The Ha clan gave her enough of a lesson to learn. ]

It's the -ma clan, Yukine. Somehow, their spirits are here. Or someone pretending to be them at least.
[He is in the midst of cutting one down when Bishamon's outburst catches him off-guard.
But a moment later, he's grinning.]
That's more like the pervy god I know.
[...you know he can't keep that shit in for long.]

[Yukine’s attention is split for a moment between trying to focus on what Yato is doing and on what he is talking about. Weird stuff keeps happening, but is that even possible? He guesses that’s why Yato said ‘pretending’… But if- if it’s really them, is it okay to be cutting them down like this?
But before he can ask, his attention is grabbed by something else entirely.
He cries out wordlessly, his focus so diverted that whatever Yato is cutting at the moment is barely affected.
In the growing crowd of souls, he found a familiar face: Suzuha!
The fact that they’re in the middle of a battle completely disappears from Yukine’s mind as he desperately calls to Yato,]
Yato! Yato, change me back! Change me back now! It’s Suzuha!

They aren't there.
They can't be real.
They're dead.
They're all.... ]
Yukine... it hurts... make it stop...
[ She knows that voice and it nearly makes her drop the Saiki.
And she isn't the only one. All of them know that voice. It makes all of her shinki feel a measure of disbelief and confusion. ]
....Suzu... ha....

Yukine, keep cutting! Focus! It might be him, but he's gone, and he wants to stay that way! Just listen to him!
[He resorts to using his own fists and feet for a while here, actually kicking and punching the corpses away, Sekki still in his hands.]
Bishamon! You know better than this! Stop behaving this way and help me!
[This is infinitely more difficult with dull swords okay??]

[Even though it's not directed at him, Yato's command to help him snaps Yukine's attention back to the situation at hand.
If they get rid of these zombies, then Yato won't need to keep fighting and can turn him back, so then he can talk to Suzuha.]
AAAAHHHH!
[Without really paying attention to what he's doing other than he needs to cut them down, Yukine swings in an arc while still in Yato's hand. A borderline flashes out from the blade, cutting clean through a handful of zombies.]

Lady Bishamon.... Yukine... please....
[ Hearing her name makes her heart ache. It's him. It has to be him - and all of them know it.
But instead, she shuts her eyes. ]
GAIKI! SUUKI!
[ She knows what Yukine's up to. That borderline was evident. Saiki disappears, replaced by the pair of guns that open fire at the corpses that surround them. Her hesitation is gone but her declaration is directed both as an answer for Yato and assurance for her team. ]
We'll put them all to rest - no exceptions!

Just keep it together for a little while, Yukine. I promise it's going to be okay!
[He spins on the spot, taking in everything going on around them as he does so. It looks like Bishamon is fighting now too. Good.]
Remind yourself that they're not who you think they are! Just keep saying it out loud if you have to!
[Maybe, just maybe, they'll be able to make it through this mostly unscathed.]

[In aggravation he trembles in Yato's hand, but he's focused enough on cutting a way through to where Suzuha is.]
Is it him or isn't it? He called out to me-- [Over the clamour of battle he can still hear his name. He clenches his fist over his chest, as if it can help him get a grip on his emotions.]
I want to say goodbye to him. I want to tell him I'm looking after his tree...

And that's the last thing she needs right now.
But thankfully, the "crowd" seems to be thinning. Yato's instructions are directed toward Yukine but they're helping her too. 'They aren't who you think they are' she quietly reminds everyone. ]
Even if it was Suzuha, he wants us to bring him to peace! We can't hold back! We owe it to all of them!
SAIKI!
[ She only rears back as the giant sword appears in her hands. The swing is enough to take out the frontline of the approaching corpses...
And the only one left is Suzuha. ]

I don't think it's him. Yukine, just calm down! He knows how you feel, and he knows you're taking care of the tree!
[Yato doesn't say anything about HOW he might know that, as he's busy turning to kick another zombie in the chest. His shinki is a little hyper focused in one direction after all.]
Ha! Good one, Bishamon! I knew you were good for something!
[As she smashes the front line away, Yato rushes forward. No point in letting anyone hesitate any further. And there's only Suzuha here. Yukine can handle it, right?]

[And then there is only Bishamonten-sama and Yato facing Suzuha's pained-looking spirit.]
Yato... Even if Bishamonten-sama says it will bring him peace, even if he's asking for it, even if it's not really him-- I can't- I can't cut him...
If you won't change me back so I can to speak to him... at least don't make me cut him.
[Especially not when there is another option- another god here who can do it.]

With that, she breathes in. ]
Yato. Step back. He was my shinki. I'll deal with him.
[ With that, she charges forward to build momentum.
cue Noratan]This is the land of the rising sun
Your desecration shall not be allowed
[ Viina, it isn't an ayakashi. ]
Hear me, I am the god Bishamon
I now lay thee waste with the Saiki
And expel thy vast defilement
[ But maybe if she treats it like one... ]
I cleanse thee
[ It'll make it easier for Yugiha to strike. And it certainly seems that way. The giant sword is light in her hands, making it easy for her to raise it over her head.
That's it. It's just an ayakashi. It isn't actually Suzuha. You can do this, Yugi. ]
RUIN!
[ The blade comes down, cutting clear across Suzuha's chest to strike the corpse down. When she lands, the Saiki digs into the ground and she goes on one knee with her head lowered.
She doesn't see what happens to the corpse. ]

I know. I know, Yukine...
[The words leave his mouth before Bishamon steps forward. But upon hearing the other god's words, he lets out a frustrated yell and spins backwards, out of the way and to take up a place at her back, protective, as he listens to her recite the rending spell. He's busy watching her back, so he doesn't notice her kneeling down.]
Looks like we've got more visitors. Look alive.

And then he jumps in surprise at Yato's frustrated shout and sudden turn.]
! ...
[Yato is really upset over this too...
He's glad he's facing away. Yukine could look behind if he wanted too but--
Bishamon's shout of "Ruin!" cuts across his thoughts, and unbidden his imagination brings up an image of Suzuha falling with a huge bloody gash across his body--
Choking on his breath, Yukine presses his hands to his eyes.
No- No...
No. He's got to get himself together--
Yato's words find him.
Grinding his teeth Yukine looks up and ahead.
He'll stay sharp and protect Yato.
They'll go home together. Then there'll be time to cry a lot.]

But she feels it. She feels the sting of her team, especially from Yugiha. They knew Suzuha. They spoke to him, spent time with him, he knew their names... There's guilt there. Sadness. Confusion. She knows. Which is why she takes her time getting up.
Whenever you're ready, everyone. She can't fight with them hesitating. For now, they'll have to hold it in. There will be plenty of time to mourn him again when they get home.
But she finally turns her attention back to Yato. ]
Then we'll have to deal with them as quickly as we can. Neither my shinki nor Yukine can possibly take any more of this.

He'll have to make sure Yukine realizes that soon.]
You're telling me.
[His response to Bishamon manages to have an edge of sarcasm to it. Somehow, he's still pulling off his normal attitude, even in this situation.]
Let's push through this mess.
[His aim is the least dense area - somewhere he can break through and then LEAVE. There are a lot of gods and shinki around here and he needs to protect his hafuri's sanity. Yukine comes first.
Always.]
