[Closed] World Inside the Crystal
Who: Kairi and Erk
misterfrumpyface
What: Showing Erk how to use his phone, mainly
When: May 22nd
Where: Library
Summary: Erk is definitely not from a time that included phones, so Kairi's here to help.
---
[Kairi walks into the library and immediately starts looking for the man who she video-conferenced with beforehand. It didn't explain everything as well as necessary, but it got them this far at least. So she's still in that helpful mood, but she knows Erk's not, so she's looking as much for his face as the back of his head, looking downward or bummed out.]

[She holds up her own phone and shows him where in the settings he can put it on "Do Not Disturb."]
That means nothing except an alarm that you set up will make noise. Like if you want to wake up at a specific time every day, you can set an alarm for that. Then the volume is... over here.
[She swipes a few more times.]
That one I turn up before I go to bed so that it's quiet all through the night - because of the silent setting - but then when I want to wake up, it's loud enough that I'll hear it.

I haven't had need of an alarm yet, but that's good to know.
[There. His phone's settings have been successfully adjusted. He's starting to think he could get the hang of this, eventually.
But just out of curiosity...] What would happen, though, if someone tried to call while my phone is silenced like this?

[She's not THAT up on the ins and outs of the settings for the answer to come automatically to her, but she taps her chin in thought.]
Well, I think if you don't answer your phone - any time, silenced or not - that's when people leave you messages. It's called voicemail. Literally a voice or video message that they record as if they were talking to you on your phone, but hoping you'll see it later when you're available again.
[She finds the section of her phone for that too - Missed Calls and Voicemail.]

So you can review messages people have left for you on your phone, and respond to them at your leisure? [That's handy. He can avoid being bothered until he feels like allowing himself to be bothered.
He nods slowly.] I believe I understand. Does that about cover the basic operations, then, or is there more I need to know? Does a phone require any special care or maintenance?
no subject
No that's just about it, but care or maintenance...
[She holds her free hand up in realization.]
Oh! You'll definitely need to keep it away from water - like, dunking the whole thing in a bowl of it. Also, you'll need to charge it sometimes. See here--
[She points to the battery power indicator.]
That tells you how much power it is. Maximum is 100%. If it gets to 0, that's fine, but it turns off and you can't turn it back on until you plug it in again. That's called charging. There should be a cable somewhere back at your temple for it. It charges the battery - that's how it can travel around in our pockets without being plugged into the wall constantly.

[He's also had time to learn what it means to plug something in, so at least there's one phrase he doesn't need to have defined for him. Thank goodness--he's had enough of feeling like a clueless neophyte.]
...And I'll be sure to avoid dunking it in a bowl of water. [Shouldn't be too hard.]
If that's all of the important information, then I won't take up any more of your time. I'm sure I can figure out the details myself. [He nods in gratitude.] Thank you for your help.
