After seeing Barry get a little upset over the BBS following Amaterasu's announcement, Kairi decides that meeting in person for a bit - if only to blow off some steam - might help him out. Then again, he did also want to do some more training, so both at the same time seems reasonable to her.

Off she goes to find That Temple With The Bears, as he told her.

[Barry's anger is very flash in the pan, and once he's had a chance to cool off a little, he's generally okay. He's still worried about Amaterasu, but he's resolved to just do his best and look out for her where and when he can. So when Kairi knocks on the door to his goddess' temple, he greets her with his usual smile.]

Kairi, hey! You come over to watch some anime?

[Kairi shakes her head no, but then decides to amend that with a little 'Oh' sort of realization on her face.]

Well, not first off. Maybe afterwards - I thought you could use a distraction, and we'd talked about training together some more, right?

[very_goodman]

A distraction?

[It honestly takes him a moment, but then when he realizes what she must be talking about, he nods.]

...Oh! Yeah. That sounds good. You got somethin' else ya can show me?

Yes, actually!

[She doesn't mind that they're still standing on his god's temple's front steps. Anywhere is fine to jumpstart this part of the conversation.]

I know we talked about Borderline, and two shinki can't practice Rend together, but what about the Silence spell - have you heard of it? I've been practicing thanks to some notes that Lavi took.

Dunno that one. But if you're willin' to teach, I'm willin' to learn!

[Barry steps out of the temple - more of a wilderness lodge, really - and gives a big grin.]

So how do we start?

[Very similar to the Artemis temple then, matching his pace for wherever they need to go for some open practice room.]

We need to have just a little distance between us, like at Bishamon's training. And then it's kind of like using Borderline against each other - it comes down to how badly you want the spell to work. But we have to use our shinki names against one another.

[The fields surrounding the temple are large, lush, and green, so they don't have to go far.]

Usin' our names against each other... is that safe?

To be honest? I don't think it is.

[She stops a little distance away from him.]

But other people could cast spells against us too - not even shinki spells, their own innate powers. From what I could tell when we trained together, you and I have a similar problem - we don't have those other abilities. So, I thought Silence would be a good way to defend ourselves. It won't hurt someone to try and just make them stop talking, so maybe we'll be more... willful when we try to cast it.

[Instead of how she'd tried to teach Goten Bind and he ended up being too nervous about 'hurting' Kairi.]

Yeah... I guess if it was safe, it wouldn't be very useful, huh?

[Barry folds his arms, nodding.]

Awright, let's give it a shot. Sounds like somethin' good to know, anyway. Maybe shut down enemy spells and stuff, like ya said.

[Kairi nods back.]

My vessel name is Gouki.

[She holds out her right foot and shows her inner ankle, where the symbol can be seen.]

How about yours?

[He pulls down the front of his t-shirt a little to show it on the left side of his chest.]

Alright, so if this is anything like Bind it's a little deceptively simple. There's not much to say or do - it's all in the concentration.

[She lifts one hand in his direction.]

And we just stop concentrating to drop the spell.

Ouki...

[And she watches as his name glows from just inside his shirt.]

Silence.

[very_goodman]

[Barry's mouth opens wide at the glowing. He's never seen it do that before. But even though he's gaping, there's no sound coming out at all. It takes him a moment to realize it, but then he looks back at Kairi and gives her a big thumbs up.]

.... Wait, it worked??

[She knows she's been training a lot, and of course with someone unfamiliar with defending against the spell she could have expected some success, but the fact is that Barry was also told in advance what she was about to do... She's really startled. She hadn't picked up Bind that fast.]

Ah-!!

[She forces herself to blink and swipes her hand as if batting something away to very deliberately get the spell to go away.]

[Once he sees her hand move, Barry tries speaking again.]

Oh I wanted it to work - I really wanted it to work. I've been working on reading over Lavi's notes as carefully as I can...

[She holds her arms as she thinks.]

I wonder if the more spells you know, the easier it gets? One of the magic-users might know better than us... Well, you should still give it a try on me, right?

Yeah, guess so. All right, here goes! Get ready!

[Barry lifts his hand, palm out toward Kairi.]

Gouki... Silence!

{Kairi balls her fists and meets Barry's gaze, hoping that maybe if she stares him down and concentrates on the fact that she knows they're both new at this, then it won't affect her.

She purses her lips and then opens them.]

No-

[Ah, the word came out.]

Oh. Well that's a good thing to know, then.

[very_goodman]

[Barry stares right back, his gaze steely and serious. But all of that falls away immediately when he hears Kairi speak.]

Aw, man... I really thought I had it.

[pure_radiantics]

No but this is good, in a way

[She gestures to herself.]

We were both concentrating really hard - and you've been here longer than I have. So what's the only other difference between us? I think, tell me if I'm wrong, that I know Bind - I was trained by Mr. Kazuma a little and practiced with several other people. So it gave me a kind of confidence, I think?

[She gestures to Barry then.]

It just means that if you Master one kind of Spell, the others will come easier, I think. You can do it, Barry. I know you can.

Hmm... I dunno much about spells and magic and stuff, but that makes sense to me.

[He flexes an arm, grinning as he slaps his bicep with the other hand.]

Guess that means I just gotta work harder!

I'm glad you think so! Did you want to try Bind for a bit too, or is that enough for today?

[She figures that she can ask and let him decide. She's the one who spends most of her day focusing on this kind of stuff, but at least she can recognize not everyone feels that way. If Barry had been more dejected when it didn't work out for him, maybe she wouldn't have offered, but since he's the Try Harder type...]

Bind, huh? Sounds good. Let's give it a shot, long as I'm on a roll.

[He laughs, perfectly happy to make jokes at his own expense.]

Aww! Don't worry about it!

[She holds up her hand to show him.]

It's the same as Silence! But this might be a little bit easier to envision, I think... like you're wrapping the other person up tight and not letting them move! Other than that, same hand position, just like Borderline, and use the vessel name again. Name first, then "Bind."

You try first this time!

[She stands ready.]

Just like a big bear hug! Awright, lemme try this thing out.

[Barry grins, lifting his hand and pointing it at Kairi. He's concentrating pretty hard this time.]

Gouki... Bind!

[Kairi's ready for him, but she still relaxes. She's felt this before and this time isn't about making it too difficult for him - if she were a Teacher like Kazuma maybe she wouldn't have done it this way, but to her she's specifically giving him an opportunity to see what it feels like when it succeeds. That way, he won't get tricked into thinking it didn't work.

She feels the constriction, and does wince a little bit as it tightens around her, but she doesn't cry out or anything. She just closes her eyes tightly and tries to wait for him to release her.]

Hey, looks like it worked!

[Barry grins, waiting a few moments before lowering his hand and releasing the spell.]

How'd it feel?

... Phew!

[She takes a deep breath in.]

It was definitely effective! Bear hug's right...

[She massages her own arms lightly.]

When you get that one consistent, I bet it'll be your best one.
