Came, Saw, Learned
Who: Yukine, Goten and mrick Aymeric
What: Goten gets some more training in borderlines and a spell.
When: June 27, morning
Where: Aymeric's temple
Warning: None
Although they hadn't set a time other than 'morning', Yukine shows up just before 9 o'clock, figuring that's not early enough to be annoying.
He hesitates at the threshold for a moment, an image flashing in his mind of the kid waiting for his arrival like a puppy waiting for its master to come home. ...Naw. Goten-kun is eager, but maybe not that eager.
Grinning to himself he approaches the house, and can't help but stare a little- he's never seen a Western-style mansion like this before. Is there a regular doorbell, he wonders...

Aymeric knew that Yukine was coming over due to Goten asking but there was no official time except for morning. Thankfully he's the type to rise at dawn and get things started. It's only by chance that the door opens because the resident voidsent/primal/feline was yowling to go outside. So before seeing the tall elezen in the doorway, the white floof cat zooms out and into the bushes.
Oh, that is convenient.
"You must be Master Yukine, we're expecting you." he greets warmly. "Come inside, I do have tea and breakfast if you would like some."
Ladies and Gentlemen, Lord Commander of Ishgard's Temple Knights.

'Master'
Yukine shines a little at that. He's never been called that before! It's ... pretty damn cool.
"Yes, I'm Yukine. Nice to meet you too..." ...He only knows Goten's god's name by the wrong spelling. He doesn't exactly want to try pronouncing it from that.
And he brightens even more at the invitation to breakfast, although he tries to downplay it.
"I had breakfast before I came. But if you went through that trouble, I guess I could at least try some. Thanks."
He comes to step inside, and has to try really hard to not gawk at the inside of the temple. Why can't Yato get his act together enough to have a place like this?

"Ah, forgive me for not introducing myself." Because while he does love Goten, he has a habit of mispronouncing names like Mandragora, who was the mentioned furball. "My name is Aymeric."
Because again, not having to say his full title is refreshing in this realm. He does lead the young shinki towards the kitchen where everything is, including the mentioned food and tea on the stove. Like with most that come within the temple, the atmosphere just screamed 'warm and homey'.
"I did manage to maneuver the training grounds into your session for today but I just admit that I know little about spell weaving." Since he truly does fight with sword and bow mostly but he wants to do good for them both. Even if it is a simple training lesson. Maybe.

Following him to the kitchen he takes in the atmosphere for a moment before taking a seat.
"As for that, it's not a problem because you can't cast spells anyway. But like I told Goten-kun, it's good if you learn how they're done, because you can teach a shinki how to do it. With borderlines, anyway, for sure." He hasn't actually heard of a god teaching shinki spells, but in theory, maybe.
Something about Aymeric-sama makes Yukine really focus on him while speaking, but as he finishes he finally glances at the food on the table. It looks good...
no subject
"But even if that is so, I would like to see how it is done. Just so I can recognize it out in the field."
At least he doesn't question why he's being the focus; that's normal for a man who leads on a basis. Don't think he can't see you eyeing the breakfast sandwiches which...there's quite a few.
"I did say you can have some, there is plenty for you both." Unless Goten eats them all.
no subject
And he takes more than a few sandwiches to put on the plate before him. He'd better call dibs like this before Goten-kun shows up. He'd seen him eat only once before, and it had been just a snack, but... it left an impression that the kid could really pack it away.
Thinking over what might be helpful for Aymeric-sama to see while they're training, one thing comes to mind to ask.
"Come to think of it, what kind of vessel does Goten-kun change into for you?"
no subject
"Hmmm, it was a sword in shape but not made of steel. Twas aether...or rather chi when it comes to Goten." As Aymeric is recalling how the blade was during their previous battle. "There was no handle but I could grip it as if there was one...and the color was blue as I recall." That's just a bonus really. Probably Goten's favorite color too.
"I have never seen anything like it...but it felt right."

Goten's voice echos as he calls loudly from the other room. He's been looking under various pieces of furniture for the last few minutes. But the smell of food does win over finding the fluff ball. He steps into the kitchen, patting his stomach before he spots the pair. He blinks, before his whole face lights up. He's already here!
"Yukine! Hey! You're here!" Goten exclaims with a big smile as he looks to Aymeric. "See? This is Yukine. He's taught me a bunch and helped me learn how to make a borderline. He's the best shinki teacher ever, Aymeric!"
He means every word because in Goten's eyes, it's all true! He doesn't know of a more knowledgeable shinki because Kazuma clearly doesn't count. No, he's just a jerk. But with that, Goten makes his way to the table, climbing into the chair thats practically bigger then him. He stands on it to reach across the table to snag one, two...five of the breakfast sandwiches and starts inhaling them.

At Goten's shout from the other room he looks quickly over in that direction.
"Oh, was that the white thing that ran out earlier?" He smiles at Goten though, and tries to keep a straight face through all the compliments.
"R-right. And I'll teach you more today." He makes a quick grab for a couple more sandwiches. The other boy will for sure make quick work of the rest.
"I'm not sure what will be most useful for you to see, Aymeric-sama. But I was thinking of starting with the cutting borderline and seeing how things go from there."
no subject
The honorific catches him off guard a bit but he does ponder if it is a title meant for a god. After all, he still has much to learn about this world. "Hmm, I do trust your judgement on this matter, Master Yukine. Having not seen them myself, I have no say in the matter."
Translation: good to go, have permission. No one would really suspect this man to be rather high up but then again, this is not his home world.

The younger shinki continues to shovel food into his mouth, letting Yukine and Aymeric do most the talking because there is food that needs to be eaten right now. In truth, Goten is a tiny bottomless pit and he enjoys every second of it.
"I wanna learn everything so I can be the best I can be. I wanna help Aymeric the most I can." Goten smiles in between bites as he stuffs his mouth full looking very much like a hamster.
no subject
…Wow, Goten really did get a nice god. (All this ‘Master’ and ‘I trust your judgement’ might go straight to his head.) With a nod at the boy he quickly swallows his last mouthful before speaking.
“And I’ll do my best to teach you. Aymeric-sama, could you show us to the training area you mentioned? And if you have anything that you don’t mind getting cut up, like a bunch of straws or chopsticks or something, we could use something like that.”
Even though Goten is technically still eating, he’s sure the kid will be done in a moment. Like, as soon as he swallows what’s in his cheeks.
no subject
"Of course, come this way. Tis not far off."
And he's right. Once they're ready, the lord commander will lead them through the back door of the temple and down a small pathway towards the training grounds. There's plenty of wooden weapons for sparring as well as what looks like a locked chest (for good reason) and practicing dummies but one in particular looks like it has been poked with many times. Funny story about that one...
"Will this suffice?"
no subject
"It's big enough right? We don't gotta worry about hurting anything...expect the dummies." Goten is already stretching, pulling his arms behind his head and then touching his toes. Vessel form or not, it just feels right to warm up a little. He wants to learn. Stronger borderlines, spells, fighting...it's all exciting.
no subject
"Yep, it'll do great. Thank you, Aymeric-sama."
And with that Yukine focuses on Goten. The god can come or go as he wants while they train. It won't bug him.
"All warmed up?" He can't help but grin a little. Stretching before doing this might not be a bad idea. Rolling his shoulders to loosen them up a bit, Yukine gets down to business.
“First, I’ll teach you about a cutting borderline. You remember I told you that a borderline keeps out what you want kept out, right? So… what gets left in or out. If you turn it a little, it becomes ‘what gets cut or not cut’.” What lives or dies… well, that’s a bit extreme for now. Yukine will try to avoid passing on Yato and Kazuma’s Spartan methods.
Without knowing what would be fine to cut except for the dummies, Yukine points at the one that’s obviously been used a lot. “Just watch, first.” And putting his fingers into the proper gesture he makes a quick gesture towards the dummy. A flash of light darts from his hand and slices the dummy shallowly across the chest.
“Like that. You might have to think extra-carefully about it, Goten-kun, to not blast it with that beam of yours. But take your time and practice it, and I’m sure you’ll get it. Want to try?”
let me know if and when you need Aymeric again~
But for now, he'll pay attention to the youngsters quietly and jump in if Yukine needs anything.
Always need Aymeric; best god
"It really did cut it..." Goten stares at the dummy. He really didn't think borderlines could cut. More like...Yukine was using the word 'cut' to mean something else. But no, it's exactly like how he said. Goten thoughtfully looks at his own right hand, mimicing the way Yukine held his.
It doesn't look difficult to do.
But neither did regular borderlines and boy, did Goten struggle with those.
"Blasts just sorta happen without me thinking about it...with boarderline stuff, I really gotta." He frowns a little at his hand before looking up at Yukine, "If I have to think extra hard about it, won't that be bad if I'm fighting an ayakashi?"
/nod nod
"A-anyway, here nothing will get hurt except the dummy, so it's fine. You can take your time to get used to it and make all the mistakes you need to."
no subject
Still...he's got to give it his best. For Yukine and Aymeric!
Taking a deep breath, Goten raises his shoulders and takes a step or two towards the dummy. He looks back down at his right hand. Okay, here goes nothing...
'Dont use Chi, don't use Chi...'
He moves to swing his arm quickly, like Yukine did but instead of cutting it becomes a borderline directly in front of the dummy.
" . . . . ."
And he tries again and again and again.
Another borderline. Another borderline---and the last one shoots out a ki blast they blows off the dummie's head.
"Uhm..."
no subject
"Pff- haha! Oh, man. You're pretty dangerous there, Goten-kun!"
Running out to retrieve the head he tries to stifle his laughter. It might make the kid feel bad, after all.
"You were really trying there though. I could tell. And you made regular borderlines just fine! Even though it's not the cutting one yet, I think just that you're making the lines when you couldn't before shows progress, right?"
Holding the head and shrugging, because there's no way to mend it right now, he offers, "Wanna give it another go? There's still some dummy left."
no subject
Goten laughs a little, scratching the back of his head as Yukine goes to fetch the head. He appreciates it, even as he glances back casually at Aymeric. They're dummies, this is what they're here for thats fine, right?
"You really think so, Yukine? Thanks!" He blinks at that, eyes lighting up from the praise as he smiles up at him. Even if Goten didn't do it right, Yukine is still complimenting his efforts. It boosts his confidence a bit and just encourages him to keep trying.
"Mmmhm! You sure you won't get bored though, Yukine? Borderlines...I donno why they're hard to do. Are all shinki training stuff hard to do?"
He likes the challenge, he does. But seeing how other shinki, not inculding Yukine because Yukine is like the best of the best in Goten's eyes, can toss borderlines so easily yet he's struggling with that. If spells are like that to, it's going to be a long process.
no subject
"Is everything is hard? I don't think so, but some things are harder than others. Mm. Well, I won't get bored no matter what we practice, but if you want to switch gears and give a spell a try, we can do that. You should keep trying to get the cutting borderline down though. But what do you want to do for now?"
no subject
He sounds unsure. Borderlines are so difficult for the young shinki and he really wanted to do more to impress Aymeric too. Still, he appreciates Yukine helping him with everything. He really is a good teacher.
"You're the teacher, so what do you think is best, Yukine?"
cr with yukine = novels
After a moment he shrugs. “Well, let’s give a spell a try. After that you can take your time practicing both whenever you want.
“Okay, so casting a spell on yourself is way easier than casting a spell on someone else, but you should learn how to do both. So we’ll go with umbra. It’s a spell to hide yourself or someone else.
In order to cast a spell, there are three points. One, you need to know the other target’s name.” With the finger he raised to count off the point he taps his name, partly visible above his shirt’s collar. “For you new shinki, there will for sure be something weird about that rule for you, seeing as you come here with a name you already remember. So I’ll need to know your vessel name, Goten-kun.
Second, you have to think carefully about when you choose to cast a spell. Casting a spell successfully on someone forces them into submission to you. Depending on the situation and how you feel about that, it can even sting your god. A hiding spell like umbra isn’t so bad, because it’s not an offensive spell, but you should still be careful about your mindset.
Third, there is no ‘practice’. You just have to do it.”
He gives Goten what he hopes is a reassuring nod. “For now, tell me your vessel name. And you can ask any questions about those three points, but it might be easier to just show you first.”
cr with yukine = the best thing ever cause hes amazing like the mun that plays him
Here with Yukine, he's refreshed and ready to go.
"But don't you gotta practice to get good at it?"
He can't help but ask that. It's sorta like training with borderlines or sparring, right?
"It's Chin..ki...?" He pauses briefly, glancing back over in Aymeric's direction for confirmation. It's not a name he hears a lot so it's still weird. After a nod, he looks back to Yukine. "Yeah, Chinki!"
/o\!!!
“You’re not wrong. You do have to practice, actually. There’s just no way to prepare other than doing it, is what I think that means. And while borderlines can vary in strength a little, spells either work or don’t work.
“Anyway, let me show you. Umbra.” His fingers pointed at his own temple, Yukine casts the spell. To Aymeric and Goten, he would have vanished from sight. Standing in the same place he continues speaking, “Umbra is simply a spell for hiding, like I said, but you can still hear me. And there is another interesting thing about it. I’ll cast it on you now, Goten-kun. Umbra,” There is a brief beat as Yukine confirms that the name ‘Goten’ didn’t work then he adds, “Chinki.”
He then breathes a silent breath of relief that the vessel name allowed him to cast the spell. It’s good to confirm it for himself.
The ‘interesting’ part that he had mentioned is that Yukine, as the caster, can see Goten still. And Goten can see himself. But now Aymeric can’t see either of them.
“For a spell that makes you invisible, what do you notice about yourself?” Okay, so that’s a big hint, but he wants Goten to notice for himself.
