Allergies and a bit of science [closed]

[ Elfnein had decided to answer a call for allergy relief from a person who couldn’t get any sort of medical relief from their seasonal allergies. It would be a perfect way to gain more followers and help out without the need of fighting. ]

[ The small goddess had a bag filled with over the counter allergy medications and other old cures people seemed to swear by. There were also a few beakers and tools to mix, crush and create some hopefully not deadly cure; Elfnein was knowledgeable about everything related to the human body and the different ways to cure whatever disease might fall on someone. Though Elfnein’s method was a bit complex considering this could be solved by going right to the problem of the plants and other animals causing the issue. ]

It shouldn’t take long to create a cure

[ She had asked Maria to help with everything since it was going to be a lot of trial and error work. At the very least there was an adult making sure nothing bad was going to happen. ]

[Making sure nothing bad is going to happen is definitely Maria's priority here. Though she knows well enough that Elfnein is no slouch on scientific knowledge, the slightly unsure look on her face as she watches the process says she's not the most confident that mixing medications is the way to fix this.]

Do you have a way to test it? There's quite a lot of options here.

[And thus a lot to go wrong. Maria picks up one of the bottles of allergy medication and turns it in her hand for a moment before placing it back where it had been.]

[ Creating a super allergy drug is clearly the best way to go. ]

I was going to use myself as a test subject.

[ The dosage on all of the different mixes were low enough not to case a lot of side effects, and Elfnein didn't want to ask others to test it since something could go wrong. ]

[That doesn't entirely clear the look of faint worry from Maria's face, because even with Elfnein being what she is, things can still go bad, but they don't have a great deal of options.]

As long as you're sure it won't hurt you. [She is a god, at least, so she'd have to be more resilient than a human on that front as well. And even with how little command Maria has of her god power so far, she's also right here if it ends up being needed.]

I believe the worst would be feeling very tired or lightheaded.

[ Since most allergy meds cause that it would just end up being that only way worse. Elfnein is prepared for it and willing to power through it all. ]

[Since Elfnein almost definitely has more knowledge of that kind of thing than Maria would, the summation does seem to put her at ease a little more. They're not necessarily good side-effects, but as side-effects go there could definitely be worse.]

Alright. I could probably help you with those if they came up anyway. I've just never seen anyone mix medicines like this before.

If you don't know what each medicine contains mixing them is a bad idea, but if you know what is in them then mixing and grouping based on contents it's ok.

[ It's what the momcat is here for, making sure Elfnein doesn't overdo it. ]

I see. So it's about knowing which ingredients would mix badly and which ones won't? [Maria has to confess herself curious about the whole process, honestly, because for all the time she's spent with scientists and similar sorts, she's never been one herself.]

I trust you to know, obviously, but there is always space for things to go wrong.

[alchemists]

Correct.

[ There is always a chance for things to go wrong, but it's a factor in any type of experimentation. If you didn't take a risk you would never gain results. ]

If I notice anything going wrong I'll stop right away.

Is it that easy to tell if things are going wrong? [At the very least, Maria sounds more genuinely curious than worried this time around. Though it would be nice to know so she can be a second pair of eyes there, so to speak.]

[alchemists]

In it's material state it will be harder to tell, but if the color or smell react and give off things they shouldn't I can isolate that sample and not use it.

[ Plenty of other things could go wrong but allergy medication can only really react in a few ways when you break it down. Elfnein knows not to make harmful drugs from it and it won't be in a large dose to start with. ]

Well, if it's that obvious, at least we should both know if it happens. So the main issue is how much more effective mixing these medications would make them for the person we're trying to help.

[Which cycles them back around to the first problem of potential side-effects, but since they've already discussed it, Maria isn't going to raise it again.]

[ Elfnein nods, with the information they have on hand it's going to take a few test runs to get a working combo. ]

Everyone reacts differently to medication so being careful on what is mixed is the top priority. I believe that we can help them this way though!

I'm glad you're taking so much care with it. [Maria's voice is very warm there, because while she definitely didn't expect Elfnein of all people to be careless, it's still nice to see her so focused on making sure things go well.] I hope you're right. It'll be a good ending to your first prayer.

[alchemists]

I don't want to let them down.

[ It's her first big prayer after all, gotta show off to people even if it's small. ]

That's the best attitude to have. I think you'll do fine.

[Though Maria's tone is gentle, it's also very confident. She definitely believes this is something that Elfnein in particular has the right skills for over almost any other god.]

[ Now the hard part, creating this cure all. ]

[ Elfnein had placed all the materials out in order, several beakers and other tools to mix and test things. When she accepted the prayer she broke down all the solid pills and capsules into powder form so it would be easy to work with. ]

Test number 1, mixing an everyday allergy medication with extra vitamins along with other herbal materials used to cure colds.

[Since Elfnein is busy with that, Maria sits down nearby to watch her work. It's still going to be an interesting thing to see, and she definitely wants to be around to oversee the testing, so she doesn't mind being largely here to supervise.]

Are there any particular vitamins and herbs you're going to focus on adding? There are quite a lot of options when it comes to ones people say cure a cold.

Vitamin C is used to help boost the body's immune system, ginger is useful for clearing stuffy noses. So those two are important along with slight amounts of vitamin D and other daily intake types to help main a working immune system to help fight back against allergies.

[ At the very least whoever takes this will get their daily vitamins no problem. ]

[Vitamin C is a bit of an obvious one, but the others are new to Maria, since she's usually heard of ginger in terms of fighting travel sickness. So she nods thoughtfully, committing the informaion to memory.]

I don't suppose it helps that it seems to be a seasonal allergy, either, so a one-time treatment wouldn't do much good.

It need to have an on-going effect, which is going to be tricky since it means we have to factor in half life for certain components.

Are there really things that degrade that quickly going into the mix? [Maria can't help but sound mildly concerned, given she mostly hears "half-life" in regards to radioactive materials.]

[alchemists]

Well for it to keep working in the long term the body needs a certain amount each day to counter the fading affects of certain parts of the medication.

[ Elfnein is trying to phrase this in an easy to understand way but it's kinda hard for her. ]

[Thankfully, that's still simple enough for Maria to understand, and she nods a little to indicate as such.]

So it's just what wears off quickly compared to the other ingredients. Sounds like it'd be a complicated thing to measure.

Correct, it's hard to measure since the rate of it wearing off can differ but in this case using the normal standard for how the human body dissipates these items we can create something that will work for the general population.

I just hope they're not allergic to anything but pollen. It'd make your job a lot harder, I imagine.

[From the sound of things, there's more than enough messing around with ingredients happening without the issue of having to pull something out due to more allergies.]
