What: Team Izanagi's living situation is changing up again with the arrival of a new shinki for Ptah, who also happens to be a friend from home.


evening of the 5th:

[When Kanji returns to the house after the day's festivities, it's with Naoto in tow-- and being as new to this place as she is, he feels guilty about having to excuse himself almost immediately, but he has to talk to Souji-- alone. This isn't the first time Souji has seen someone besides Nanako or Kanji himself turn up from home, but Kanji isn't sure there's any precedent for what to do. He tells Naoto to make herself comfortable and puts water on for tea before he goes searching through the house itself, calling for Souji at the top of his lungs.

'Quiet' has never really been a thing for him.]

Yo, Souji-senpai! You back yet? We gotta talk! It's, uh-- real important!

[Like real important, buddy.]

[ Nanako follows her in, peering over the edge of the counter at the five mugs already out and ready. Good, there'd be tea for when Homura got back, too. It would be a good way to end the night and so everyone could meet everyone.

When Naoto finishes with the stove, Nanako smiles up at her before taking her by the hand and leading her towards the stairs. ] Okay! There's some empty ones upstairs, you can pick whichever one you want! I think the one next to Kanji's room is still empty, if you want to stick close to him?

[Naoto blinks at Nanako for a moment after her question. Her cheeks blush slightly, and she looks a bit flustered; however, Naoto does her best to sound just as calm and cool as usual.]

Ah, I-- U- um, yes... I suppose that would be best. A shinki should remain close to their god after all, shouldn't they?

[ it goes completely over Nanako's head, who just leads the way up the stairs with a skip in her step. ]

Well, you're already in the same house, so you're already pretty close. But I liked being close to my shinki, too.

[That was true. They were already in the same house. That did not necessarily mean they needed to be next door to each other as well. And yet... Wait, did Nanako say "liked?" Past tense?]

Does, um... your shinki live here as well, Nanako-chan?

[That fifth mug, it must be for Souji's or Nanako's shinki. If they both had one, there would have been six mugs out, wouldn't there?]

[ Her expression falls a little at that and she shakes her head. ]

Ahhh.... No. I don't... have one at the moment. I did, but he vanished one day. That... sometimes happens here. No one knows why, though. But I... it's okay. Homura is sorta mine, too.

[That look on Nanako's face. That was the reaction Naoto had hoped to avoid, but knew was likely inevitable with her question. As much as Naoto wanted to ask more about these disappearances, she instead knows it would be best to try and steer towards a happier topic right now.]

I see. So Homura-san is Souji-san's shinki. But she is yours, too? I didn't know it was possible for a shinki to be partnered with two separate gods.

[ Nanako shifts uncomfortably, knowing that that was a complicated topic. ]

They can, but not everyone thinks it's a good thing. The old gods don't like it very much, or shinki who do it. They think it means the shinki can't be loyal to their god, that's how my onii-chan explained it. But it's different since it's us. Homura wouldn't have to choose between me and onii-chan.

[So the original gods look down on such shinki as well? The more Naoto learns about these old god, the more they rub her the wrong way. Still, she tries to keep her irritation from showing, and instead smiles sympathetically at Nanako.]

I don't think it necessarily means a shinki can't be or isn't loyal. To me, that sounds more like a shinki wants to be able to protect two people. If their bond is that close with another god, why shouldn't they want to be a shinki for them, too?

[ Relieved when Naoto doesn't sound upset by the idea, Nanako's smile returns. ]

I think so, too. And Homura's a really good shinki, too! She works really hard.

She must be very dependable then. I'm glad both you and Souji-san have such a person to rely on.

[Naoto blinks at Nanako for a moment before again smiling warmly. This girl, her kindness truly seems boundless.]
