The Far Shore has been dealing with a lot of space-time pulsating through the past week or so and everything is culminating on the night of the 15th, even though the Heavens are preparing for an all-out Obon bash. They had planned to have the celebration on the 15th itself, but Amaterasu asked to postpone a day due to the horrible feeling that is permeating the Far Shore.

And it turns out she was right to postpone everything. In fact, it will have to be postponed another whole month at this rate...



Before

Late in the day on July 15th, the new batch of shinki will arrive to a Far Shore with a thick, tense atmosphere. All night on the 15th it feels like something is about to happen - and it's difficult to tell whether that something will be good or bad. Any attempts to contact the management of the Far Shore have fallen on deaf, slightly harried ears and so everyone is left to their own devices to try and figure out why things are so tense.

July 16

Just after midnight, an explosive shock wave rips through the Far Shore, bringing on the age changes with it. Even the spirits of the Far Shore seem to be affected - for example, the library goblins are either toddling around on wobbly legs or are dragging themselves from place to place and looking decrepit. There are a few gods and shinki that seem to have been exceptions from the change, though it is not clear why.

July 17

Another wave of energy comes in the early morning of the 17th. Fewer people are affected this time and it seems to alter those people's ages a second time. There is no rhyme or reason to who is being affected further. Several of the library goblins have just dropped dead from severe old age. Oops.

Aftermath

Late on the 17th brings about one final burst from the energy that has been plaguing the Far Shore. For a short moment, every new temple glows with a soft light, seeming to beckon to their owners. But the light is gone quickly and everyone will find themselves back to normal with complete memories of everything that happened during their age adventures. The goblins that died, though, are still very dead. Looks like the library will need to get some new help soon.

[ Children sure love to climb but sure love it less when they're being treated like children. Even though they are children.

Carl stares down at the creature, eyes wide and just a little scared. Not of the fall or anything. Or the fact that the stranger isn't human. It's just, why would an adult actually help? ]

I-I'm fine, no p-problem.

[ Except his grip isn't exactly ideal, thought he tries to hold on tight. ]

[mithrarin]

[Dust is perfectly willing to treat the ones who remember their age like adults. Those are just the ones who don't tend to be climbing foolishly up places.]

You can let go. I'll catch you.

[Dust puts his sword away, quickly, to better make the words entirely true.]

[ (Oh no, Carl would probably climb trees even if his mind still was that of an adult. He’d just do it better and with more experience and thus wouldn’t fall.)

He shakes his head. ]

I don’t know that. You have no reason to catch me.

[mithrarin]

[That's such a strange thing to say it takes Dust momentarily aback, but he recovers smoothly enough.]

Sure I do. I don't want you to get hurt.

[inatimepast]

[ What’s so strange? He looks down at the stranger, and though his grip is definitely slipping, he doesn’t want to let go or put his safety in some stranger’s hands. ]

Th-that’s fine. I’ll be fine even if I get hurt.

[mithrarin]

I'm not saying you won't be. But I still don't want you to get hurt.

[He isn't moving, though he also isn't just leaping up to grab him and solve the problem directly. He can be patient, and empathetic.]

[inatimepast]

[ He stares down at him stubbornly, but to be honest, he doesn't really want gravity to decide he needs to fall, so in the end, after puffing up his cheeks and huffing in a way that’s as if he’s saying that it’s completely his decision, he nods a little. ]

...fine….

[mithrarin]

Okay. Let go, nice and easy, and I'll catch you. [Dust lifts his hands a little higher, not because it will help but to give the poor kid a little confidence that he means what he says.]

[inatimepast]

Nnnnn…. [ Carl is still hesitant, and his lips are pressed together. But then he closes his eyes, and lets go. If the stranger steps back or doesn’t catch him in any other way, he doesn’t want to look. ]

[mithrarin]

[And yet Dust's as good as his word, catching Carl lightly by the sides and lowering him to the ground so smoothly he doesn't get so much as a jolt.]

There we are. You all right?

[inatimepast]

[ Once he’s on the ground, Carl sighs in relief. ]

...yeah.......thanks...

[mithrarin]

It's okay to climb trees -- just make sure you can get back down, okay? [Dust is the last person who has any right to say a kid shouldn't do athletic feats of that nature...]

[inatimepast]

I can get down perfectly fine.

[ As evidenced. But he would have figured something out. ]

[mithrarin]

Good. [Yeah, Dust isn't gonna point out the obvious. Little-Carl's surly enough at him already, sheesh.] I'll be around if you need anything, okay?

[inatimepast]

[ He’s just suspicious of adults. Why wouldn’t he be, when the first thing he thought when he woke up this morning was that he had been kidnapped and been drugged or something, to make him forget about everything from before that moment.

He shakes his head. ]

You don’t need to.

[mithrarin]

Maybe not. But I'm going to anyway. That's how I do things.

[Maybe it's because he's a Warmblood. Maybe he just seems too much like an animal to be trustworthy. That would figure.]

[inatimepast]

[ He stares up at the weird creature, uncomprehending. ]

......why?

[mithrarin]

Because I don't want anyone to come to harm... if I can help it. [Truth, plain and simple, delivered in Dust's usual quiet, intense tones.]

[inatimepast]

...is that so?

[ He might not entirely doubt him right now, at least. ]

[mithrarin]

Yeah. Especially kids. You guys haven't even gotten the chance to do... so many things.

[inatimepast]

Yeah....

[ Now he’s turning suspicious again. What does this guy know that he doesn’t? ]

[mithrarin]

[That kids need a chance to be kids. That's what he knows. Even if they're secretly adults...]

I don't know the answers, honestly. It's something I don't remember. I don't remember much of anything, but I know what I feel inside.
