The Far Shore has been dealing with a lot of space-time pulsating through the past week or so and everything is culminating on the night of the 15th, even though the Heavens are preparing for an all-out Obon bash. They had planned to have the celebration on the 15th itself, but Amaterasu asked to postpone a day due to the horrible feeling that is permeating the Far Shore.

And it turns out she was right to postpone everything. In fact, it will have to be postponed another whole month at this rate...



Before

Late in the day on July 15th, the new batch of shinki will arrive to a Far Shore with a thick, tense atmosphere. All night on the 15th it feels like something is about to happen - and it's difficult to tell whether that something will be good or bad. Any attempts to contact the management of the Far Shore have fallen on deaf, slightly harried ears and so everyone is left to their own devices to try and figure out why things are so tense.

July 16

Just after midnight, an explosive shock wave rips through the Far Shore, bringing on the age changes with it. Even the spirits of the Far Shore seem to be affected - for example, the library goblins are either toddling around on wobbly legs or are dragging themselves from place to place and looking decrepit. There are a few gods and shinki that seem to have been exceptions from the change, though it is not clear why.

July 17

Another wave of energy comes in the early morning of the 17th. Fewer people are affected this time and it seems to alter those people's ages a second time. There is no rhyme or reason to who is being affected further. Several of the library goblins have just dropped dead from severe old age. Oops.

Aftermath

Late on the 17th brings about one final burst from the energy that has been plaguing the Far Shore. For a short moment, every new temple glows with a soft light, seeming to beckon to their owners. But the light is gone quickly and everyone will find themselves back to normal with complete memories of everything that happened during their age adventures. The goblins that died, though, are still very dead. Looks like the library will need to get some new help soon.

[Yaboku is not the only one peeking around corners, though. Soujirou is currently experiencing a semblance of the normal confusion of a newly arrived Shinki, compounded by the fact that he's... well, nine years old. And a very sheltered and isolated nine-year-old at that.

The upshot is that as Yaboku leans around a corner from one side, Soujirou leans around it from the other, and they end up with their faces approximately two inches apart. A pair of hue purple eyes blink in surprise, although Soujirou's expression of intense concentration doesn't change much.]

Who are you?

[The sudden closeness of another shybody has Yaboku jumping near out of his skin and backing away quickly!!

But he doesn't... run. He just stares at Soujirou. Obviously out of his element.]

Mmmmmmmm....

[He doesn't say anything, just shakes his head and then stares some more. He's... very good at staring. And apparently doesn't want to introduce himself.]

[They already have something in common. They're really good at those unblinking stares! For a moment, there's some strange standoff going on, an impasse created by both boys seemingly being unwilling to be the first to disclose.

Then Soujirou shuffles around the corner. He's holding a broom in his hand, much too big for his tiny stature, but apparently it offers him some comfort. And despite his awkwardness up to this point, he manages a very polite bow.]

I'm Okita Soujirou. I'm honored to make your acquaintance. [Still the same blank expression despite the formal tone, albeit with a hint of anxiety.]

[Oh... well... that makes it a little better. Yaboku hesitates for a long moment. But he kinda liked the bow... so...

He straightens himself up to his full (very small) height, trying to look as impressive as he can.]

Yaboku! I'm... I'm a god!

[That's why he won't bow. Duuuuh.]

[On one hand, there is something unbending about Soujirou, something not all that easily impressed by any kind of authority at this age. On the other.. Yaboku is looking kind of happy, and Soujirou would like for people around him to be happy. He has the distinct impression that happy people means he's less likely to get in trouble somehow.

So he doesn't quite smile, but his posture loosens up a bit, and some of that flat impassiveness melts from his expression too. He holds up his left hand, showing the red marking there.]

I'm a Shinki. So I guess that means I'm the servant of a god.

[...oh! Yato looks a little shocked, eyes going wide.]

That... y-yeah! That's what you are! But it's okay, um... we can be friends?

[This kid looks so timid. Yaboku can't... help but want to be friends.]

[Soujirou's eyes widen slightly, and what's less of his inscrutable expression melts away in favour of genuine disbelief. It's a vulnerable expression, one that makes it very clear that an offer of friendship is something far greater than he'd imagined. It's followed by confusion - almost but not quite suspicion - as he can't help but wonder:

Who'd want to be friends with me?]

Really? [There's a strange mix of breathless eagerness and caution in his voice.] Are you sure? You really want to be friends with me?

[That reaction just seals the deal in Yaboku's mind. He nods, definitvely! And holds out a hand to Soujirou.]

I can even make you my shinki! I'm allowed to do that cause I'm a god! But we can just be friends if you wanna!

[He seems perfectly at ease with either outcome.]
