016 | The Good Old Days

Summary: A breach in the space-time continuum is messing things up.

The Far Shore has been dealing with a lot of space-time pulsating through the past week or so and everything is culminating on the night of the 15th, even though the Heavens are preparing for an all-out Obon bash. They had planned to have the celebration on the 15th itself, but Amaterasu asked to postpone a day due to the horrible feeling that is permeating the Far Shore.

And it turns out she was right to postpone everything. In fact, it will have to be postponed another whole month at this rate...

Before

Late in the day on July 15th, the new batch of shinki will arrive to a Far Shore with a thick, tense atmosphere. All night on the 15th it feels like something is about to happen - and it's difficult to tell whether that something will be good or bad. Any attempts to contact the management of the Far Shore have fallen on deaf, slightly harried ears and so everyone is left to their own devices to try and figure out why things are so tense.

July 16

Just after midnight, an explosive shock wave rips through the Far Shore, bringing on the age changes with it. Even the spirits of the Far Shore seem to be affected - for example, the library goblins are either toddling around on wobbly legs or are dragging themselves from place to place and looking decrepit. There are a few gods and shinki that seem to have been exceptions from the change, though it is not clear why.

July 17

Another wave of energy comes in the early morning of the 17th. Fewer people are affected this time and it seems to alter those people's ages a second time. There is no rhyme or reason to who is being affected further. Several of the library goblins have just dropped dead from severe old age. Oops.

Aftermath

Late on the 17th brings about one final burst from the energy that has been plaguing the Far Shore. For a short moment, every new temple glows with a soft light, seeming to beckon to their owners. But the light is gone quickly and everyone will find themselves back to normal with complete memories of everything that happened during their age adventures. The goblins that died, though, are still very dead. Looks like the library will need to get some new help soon.

It kind of sounds like Lavi, but...

He tilts his head.]

I woke up in a strange place earlier and there was a woman who called herself my 'goddess'...do you want to stay there?

That's kind of you... but I would feel bad for intruding when I do not know her. [ Itachi shook his head. ] It's all right.

There is nothing wrong with wandering for a bit. Shinki do not need sleep, so I'm in no need of a bed at the moment.

[He tilts his head, but doesn't push.

A frown, though, and he brings his legs closer to his chest.]

Be careful then. Things can happen to you.

[ He looked over to him. ]

Why do you say that, Shaye-kun?

[Lavi frowns deeper, face scrunching up as if he's recalling something but the memories are nonexistent.

He refuses to look at Itachi.]

Because you'll be left vulnerable. In the dark, it's easy for the monsters to come at you.

Oh.... yes... you're right. The ayakashi. [ He hadn't really thought about it. During his time as Sasuke's shinki, the other man had never let him fight anything. He never understood why he was so protective, and now.... now he would never know. No god, no shrine, no home... and all of his friends were suddenly pint-sized. Not that... he particularly had a problem with it. They were all very cute. ]

I've only ever encountered one... it was pretty frightening. I'll be sure to stay away from them as best as I can.

But you're sitting here alone. Do you not want to go home to your goddess?

[He hasn't met one yet, but they still don't sound fun.

Although, at the question, Lavi nearly deflates.]

I don't feel comfortable around her. I don't know her.

Another reason why I also wouldn't wish to come over. [ He let out a heavy sigh. ] It's understandable. [ He also had a feeling there was a low chance of him knowing anyone. What a disaster. ]

I can stay with you, until you decide it wise to head to her temple... or wherever you decide to go.

I'm sorry I cannot be of much help, otherwise.

[Have a confused look.

Is it really understandable he doesn't know her? Everyone seems to know him and that....bothers him.

Lavi lets himself uncurl a bit as he looks at Itachi better.]

You said your god is gone?

[ He looks back over to Lavi and nods. ] That's right.

He was a very kind god. He was always looking out for me and kept us away from ayakashi... and if I asked for something, he didn't hesitate to provide it for me.

...But then today I woke up and he was gone. The temple was gone. Everything was. Except for me.

[They were close. This former god sounded like a good person, but Lavi wonders what happened that cause him to be gone.

Itachi doesn't seem to be a bad guy.

Why does this happen to the good people?

Lavi frowns a bit.]

But now you're alone. [He tilts his head to the side a bit.] Are you sad that he's gone?

[ There was some silence as he considered the question. It felt, complicated... ]

...Sad... [ He furrowed his brows. ] Yes...

Though as a shinki, this would be the first time I've felt such a thing. But it feels as if I have experienced this before. Losing him.... though I never knew him before this. [ ...Or maybe he did? He but looked to Lavi. ]

Yes. I think... I am sad. Enough for me to wish that he would reappear again. Especially since... without a god, I am very vulnerable.

...Maybe you don't need a god to protect you all the time.

[Lavi looks at the ground, seemingly in thought.]

...Sometimes you just can't depend on people to be there to help you, so you have to learn how to fight for yourself.

It's true. My god said the same thing... even if I am certain he would of rather had it otherwise. [ He reached up and touched his own chest, right over his heart. ] ...Perhaps this was meant to happen...

And you, [ And Itachi looked to Lavi. ] Perhaps I was meant to meet you, Shaye, for it to be reiterated. Fate, as it were.

[A blink and he just. Shakes his head.]

Not fate. [But at the same time, it'd be good to ensure that no one dies. There's no war here, but that doesn't matter.

People still need to live.]

You're not a romantic, are you.... [ He mused, before smiling a little. ] A very practical boy.

[He looks a little curious about that.]

It's easier to see things for the way they are.

Perhaps.

But is it as fun?

Fun?

[Lavi genuinely looks confused now.]

Do you not find yourself devoid of pleasure, from merely thinking of the resolute? To believe some things are left to the stars maybe not be practical, but it may strengthen one's imagination and joy.

Do you not have fun, Shaye? Play? Pretend to be something you are not?

[A blink, two blinks, before he tilts his head.]

...I can't remember the last time I've done anything like that.

[ There was a pause. Was he saying... he never really got the chance tp be a kid? ]

Have you ever thought it would be incredible to walk on water? Or up a tree, without climbing?

[Sorry Itachi, just have a blank look.

He's not. Easy to impress as a kid. Being exposed to war, it left little room for imagination.]

.. Come on, up, up. [ Itachi rose to his feet, then pointing to the center of the park, where a pond was. ] Come on.

We are going to try to walk on water.

We're what?

[Lavi blinks a bit, startled enough that he does as he says.]

How can we walk on water?
