Maybe. I mean, there were some bird drawings on the walls too...

[Birds seem like as valid a thing to be worshipping as anything else to Shun.]

[There's a long thoughtful pause before he nods.]

I like birds.

[So good choice, temple maker?]

So do I. I think worshipping birds would be cool, and these were really cool ones.

[There's a moment where he thinks on that, because while he's been calling them the "big birds" mostly, he does know the name of the species.]

...Oh! Vultures, that's what they were.

Vultures? Oh- [His eyes light up in recognition.] They're the ones that eat dead people, right?

[So clearly they're cool as hell to a small child]

It's dead things and not just dead people, but yeah, that's them. [Shun seems just as inappropriately upbeat about this development. He might be a bit of a nerd, but he can still appreciate big birds that eat dead things as much as any other kid.] So people could totally worship those.

I'd worship them. [A knowing nod. Birds are ten times better than people, so he'd do it easily. Especially dead thing eating birds.] Or if there was, um... A wolf. I think I'd worship those too.

I wonder if there is a wolf. [There's immediately a thoughtful look on Shun's face at that, because obviously this is a very important subject.] That's the kind of thing I think people would want to worship, because they're all strong and noble and stuff.

Wolves are noble?

[This is news to him, and he looks curious as he tilts his head to the side.]

I think it's kind of one of those weird things people think about animals. I'm pretty sure people used to ask them to protect crops and homes and stuff.

[It's a pretty old myth, but one he remembers hearing at least once or twice, even if he has to think about it.]

Huh.... [His hands swing a little as he reflects on that.] Well, if it's vegetables and things like that, wolves might eat the animals that eat those, I guess?

People are weird.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Or if it's people attacking, the wolves would probably eat them too...

[Child-friendly subjects to be discussing.] Well, gods are pretty weird too, and worshipping stuff.

But gods are fake, right? So it makes more sense to worship cool stuff like vultures and wolves.

Maybe they're real here? It seems weird to have all these temples squished together like this if they aren't. [Not that he doesn't agree worshipping animals would still be better, but it's a question that has to be asked.]

But why would they be real here? We don't even know where here is... It's really weird.

I dunno, I think it'd be kind of weird to have all these temples in one place if gods weren't real here. Usually temples are really scattered and old, and these ones are all close together and new.

[It's a reasonably logical train of thought for a child's standards.]

Huh.... [He considers this carefully.] ...Maybe we time traveled?

[hA... HA....]

...Into the past or the future? Some of these don't look like they could be built very long ago. [There are some traditional-looking temples, but there are definitely some that really aren't.]

I dunno. But if some of them are old, maybe we went back...? But if you've seen some that are recent....

[Mm, maybe this isn't as good an idea as he thought it was, and he trails off with a frown.]

Yeah, I think I passed one that looked like modern apartments? So that'd be pretty weird if we'd gone back in time. And the one I woke up in had electronics and stuff in it.

[He sounds a little thoughtful as well, but it doesn't seem like they could have gone back in time.]

Huh....

[His hands fidget with the bottom of his shirt.]

I wonder why people would build old buildings and new buildings near each other?

Sometimes they do it in cities where there isn't space to spread them out, but there's lots of space here, so it is pretty weird. We'd probably have to ask whoever's in charge. [And Shun has absolutely no idea who's in charge, so that really doesn't help either of them.]

[Just thinking about it makes Chikusa shudder.]

It's probably an adult...

[An idea he's clearly not happy about.]

[The overt reaction makes Shun frown a little in concern and confusion, though the former is outweighing the latter.]

Adults are normally in charge, so yeah. Is that bad? [Shun likes to think himself responsible, but he's not sure even he could be in charge of a place this big.]

....They're scary. And bad. [It's said with even more conviction then small children usually make about random statements.] They might do bad things to us kids- maybe that's why we're here. Because they kidnapped us.

[That wasn't quite what Shun meant, and now he actually looks concerned about how sure Chikusa seems about that.] Only some adults are like that. And if they kidnapped us, wouldn't they keep us trapped or something? [This place seems way too big for that.]
