[OPEN + closed/semi-closed] a nightingale in a golden cage

When: A: July 20th, B: July 21st, Morning, C: July 20th-22nd, late evening to ungodly hours of the morning, D: July 22nd, late evening
Where: A + B: Around the Far Shore, C: Temples of just about anyone Shun knows decently, D: Inanna's Temple
What: Shun having sleep issues and trying to be productive about themby lurking suspiciously around the temples of people he knows at why this in the night/morning, testing the surveillance bird Ankh left him, and toting a vulture around with him as one does.

[A: July 20th, Open]
[It's been quite a while since Ankh's disappearance - almost a month and a half by now, and Shun's spent that time on and off messing around with the can bird robot the god had left him. He'd managed to work the thing's transmission method out enough to view the last video left on it by the old owner, but actually making it work to transmit images to the device he has best suited to that sort of thing, namely his duel disk, has taken much more working out. Even so, he still doesn't have a good idea of the distance the thing can transmit from or how well it can actually be remote controlled, so it's time for a little field testing.
As such, people around the Far Shore may encounter a very small, red and silver bird robot attempting to get up in various business, poking around temple gardens and maybe bumping into some heads at its worst. Not too far away in any of these cases is Shun, who might appear to be wearing some kind of oddly designed wrist computer to anyone unfamiliar with the technology. Not helping is the fact that he's returned his cards to their deckbox for the moment, since there are a quite a few people here now that he'd rather not catch wind of him having them at all, and one of them lives with him.
As always, Shun is the epitome of polite company (except not at all), and if the bird happens to be inquiring around anyone in particular, he'll call out to them across the distance with a short nod to the bird.]
Say something to it. [He mostly just wants to know how well it takes audio...]

[As he'd said he would a few days ago to Izuku and Lavi during their late-night discussion, Shun's accentuated his morning patrol with a friend. Specifically, an almost-metre-long, fluffy-headed, brown and white and feathery friend who is presently riding on one of his shoulders. Apparently his coat is thick enough to shield from the claws involved, and having a not-insignificant weight on his shoulder doesn't seem to be bothering him any aside from the times the vulture leans too far into his peripheral vision and he has to look around her to actually be able to see anything.
Having a hand-raised vulture is presenting one or two unforeseen problems, though, the main one being that she's prone to jumping off Shun's shoulder at the sight of other people and hopping over in apparent birdly curiosity. Her size might make even that offputting to some people, though, so it's probably lucky Shun's around to distract her if she decides to inspect anyone too closely.]
Don't bother with her, she just wants food. [Excuse him while he takes a cleanly-wrapped ball of raw meat out of his pocket and holds it out to lure her back in his direction.]

[C: July 20th-21st, Late Evening/ungodly hours of the morning OR July 22nd, Evening, Open to existing CR]
[Unfortunately, Shun's particular surge of productivity, even for him, has been born of something else. Namely the fact that his nightmares are coming back in force for the first time since May, and it's getting to the stage where even trying to sleep is a laughable idea, when it feels like so much as shutting his eyes is all the cue his mind needs to pull sounds and images of burning and screaming, combat and destruction out of everywhere from its surface to its deepest recesses. So obviously, the solution here is to spend that additional time on something else useful.
As such, anyone Shun knows and might be inclined to keep an eye on may end up with him lurking in and around temple grounds at what ranges from reasonable but still late in the evening to hours of the morning that should only be known to night shift workers. On one hand, at least he's quiet, so he shouldn't be waking anyone up. On the other...maybe hope your windows aren't available to be stared through, or that you don't run into him by chance. His eyes are a little sharper than they should be in the darkness, owing to the silver bracelet he's wearing with the kind of thick body and intricate lines one might expect to see more on a ring, and his focus turns just as quickly as usual to anyone he notices through it...though perhaps not quite as well as the days wear on, and anyone catching him on the 21st or 22nd stands a good chance of noticing the more pronounced shadows and lines beneath his eyes, those of sleep deprivation rather than his usual faintly worn countenance.
Anyone who catches him outside from inside is likely to just get stared at until such a time as they might choose to come out. If they're already outside, they'll get a slight nod from Shun as if this is an entirely normal thing to be doing at entirely normal hours.]
You're out late. [Implying he isn't.]
[D: July 22nd, Late Evening, Closed]
[Even with what he knows will be willing help available, it takes Shun a while to swallow his pride enough to take it. But by late on Friday, he can feel his alertness and habitual reactions slipping away like they had done the last time he went without sleep for longer than this, and with things as they are right now, he doesn't want to risk that. He isn't sure not being alone will help, but nothing else seems to anyway, and all that's going to happen if he doesn't admit it now is getting found out tomorrow.
It still takes him longer than it should to actually send the text asking for that help, that isn't even directly doing so. Old habits die hard.]
If you're not asleep, I'll be at your temple in a minute.
[He doesn't really think this is worth dragging Ren out of his temple or even out of bed for, but the text is more a warning for something he was already on his way to doing. It is really only about a minute before he shows up, leaping up to alight on whichever balcony happens to be closest to Ren's bedroom, and then having to lean back against the barrier and press a hand against his face as even that simple motion makes his head swim. He'd been driving himself much less the last time he went this long or longer without sleep, and the additional exertion apparently hasn't been doing him any favours.]

Oh, I'm sorry, and how exactly was I supposed to react when a giant bird with sharp talons suddenly appears behind me?
[You know what? Chinatsu didn't even blame the bird anymore. Minus the attitude, she would actually be pretty impressed with the fact that he'd trained a vulture. She's too ticked off now to do so though. Feeling the sharp gaze, Chinatsu instinctively tensed up for a second, but only a second before she straightened her posture, resting a hand on her hip in a defiant stance.]
Doesn't matter what shape I'm in, no one should have to "worry" about a vulture coming at them like that. It could even get hurt if it approached the wrong person. And rather than critiques, shouldn't it be an apology coming out of your mouth?
no subject
[There continues to be absolutely no shred of shame from Shun, and every hint of that faintly derisive air instead. He's still looking her over, picking out what significant details he can for future reference, but that's force of habit for anyone he deals with.
If anything, the defiant stance has him looking even less impressed, though that might also be the words that come with it.]
If you think that was "coming at you", you're lucky the rest aren't here. And I wouldn't have her with me if I didn't trust her to handle herself against the "wrong person". [As for the matter of apologies, he gives a very faint, dismissive scoff.] Apologies are a waste of breath, but I sure as hell wouldn't be making one for luring her back over here just because you screamed.
no subject
She turned her head to the side, taking in a breathe and then exhaling in exasperation.]
Alright.
[She faces him again and starts towards him. Despite her growing irritation, her strides remain steady and composed, lacking any sign of the abrasive feelings she had towards the man. Once she's about a foot away from him, she stops, returning his scrutinizing once-over before turning to the bird on his shoulder. She bows her head at the vulture, a small smile on her face when she looks back up.]
You seem more reasonable than this guy, so I figured talking to you would be more productive.
I'm sorry I reacted the way that I did to you. I hope you can understand why I got scared though. You're not the kind of bird anyone would really want to mess with, so it can be pretty scary when you suddenly appear out of no where like that. I mean, people react that way even towards dogs that suddenly run towards them. You're wary of what you're no familiar with, you know?
So please be careful in the future, okay? Someone might end up having a reaction worse than mine and it wouldn't be fair for you to get hurt because of it. But, since I know now that you're friendly, I'll make sure not to do something like that again.
[Could the bird understand her? Who knows. Chinatsu still felt better talking to her since she didn't make Chinatsu want to punch her in the face.]
no subject
Other than that, though, her approach gets no reaction, and he merely looks at her levelly as she gives him the once-over as well. Once she turns her attention to the vulture, he raises a brow slightly, but doesn't seem perturbed otherwise.
While it's obvious from even those first words that she's using this as somewhat of a snipe at him, it's been a long time since something that minor has offended Shun - and quite honestly, he has no problem with someone electing to apologise to his companion birds over him, since he'd just tell them it was a waste of time anyway. So he stands watch as she says her bit, and since it seems like she's aware now that the bird means no harm, Shun turns his head, nods to the vulture and holds out his arm (to the side, rather than towards Chinatsu). The vulture hops off his shoulder again, ruffles its wings a bit, and extends its head towards Chinatsu rather than outright trying to approach this time. It's still a little confused about the hand-waving earlier, but it heard a lot of much calmer human noises, so "approach with caution" seems to it the course to take here.
When Shun speaks again, the note of derision is absent, bringing his tone to merely neutral.] She knows you're calm now, at least.
no subject
...that's not fair..
[Chinatsu muttered under her breath. Slowly, she reaches out to it, gently caressing the top of its head with the tip of her fingers. It's feathers felt soft to the touch.
That his lack of reaction to her diss didn't go unnoticed either. She had expected him to throw some other condescending words at her, but nothing. Maybe it was something he didn't mind? If that was the case, was it something he was used to? Well, that didn't make her feel any good about it then.]
It's only 'cause of her.
[Alright, she was still a little annoyed at him though.]
no subject
There's a brief shrug from Shun at her clarification. He's handled worse insults from worse people in worse situations with no reaction at all, so her throwing out a jab implying that he's unreasonable was always going to have all the impact of a fly on a radar readout.]
Because of her or not, I'll still take losing your cool and then recovering over continuing to lose it. You'd be surprised how many people won't take "don't hurt her and she won't hurt you" for an answer. [In other words, Shun will at least respect the fact that she's now handling this better than most people do when it comes to anything involving his vultures.]
no subject
Still, some kind of apology would've helped cool me down a lot sooner. You'd be surprised how often that helps
. Your reaction would piss off a lot of people.
[Man, she never thought she'd think a vulture was cute, but it was adorable how it moved its head like that. Thanks to the bird, again, her tone didn't come out as harshly as it normally would have. She continued to pet it, enjoying the feeling on her fingers. It was true when they said petting animals help you relax.]
no subject
Better to piss them off early than put up some false front so they just whine about me being rude later instead. I'd rather people not paint some kind of optimistic wrong impression of me.
[In other words, he's fully aware he's kind of an asshole, he just doesn't care. Empty words and empty sentiments aren't something he bothers with, even if that means coming off as unpleasant to people more often than not.
The vulture, meanwhile, has apparently decided that Chinatsu's hand is good, so it progresses to nudging its head at her hand a little more urgently rather than just casual bumps.]
What happened to manners chinatsu
[While Chinatsu did think that basic manners mattered, she couldn't find fault in his honesty. She'd rather people think well of her, but at the same time she would like them to be accepting of how she really is. If this guy managed to make friends with how he is, well, there may be hope yet.
Chinatsu snapped out of her thoughts when the bird began nudging her more. Did she get too distracted and not pet it enough? She had to remedy that immediately.]
I'm sorry, was I not doing it right? Is this better? Awwww, who's the sweet predator?
[She cooed, grinning at the bird's reaction.]
manners are for plebs, clearly
As Chinatsu continues her petting of the vulture, Shun continues watching over the pair of them. It is at least nice to see that the bird is enjoying herself, and he notes how receptive she's being to the attention. He'd always preferred to keep his shows of affection there minimal, since he doesn't consider the vultures pets, but he supposes he shouldn't be surprised the one Joker hand-raised would be more accepting of that sort of thing. Meanwhile, the bird seems quite pleased with all the attention, rubbing its head into the pats.]
She was hand-raised, so she's more even-tempered than the others. I didn't realise it was this much, though.
Re: manners are for plebs, clearly
Does she have a name?
no subject
One of my shinki tricked me into naming her while I was reverted to childhood last week. [Having to state that as a qualifier before he gets to the name probably says enough, and he sighs quietly before going on.] Her name is Keba.
[Chinatsu may recognise that as the word for "fluff" or "fuzz".]
no subject
Hang on, before that, she didn't have a name?!
[That's cold]
no subject
[He shrugs a little. It's not that big a deal to him, especially since she has a name now anyway and it shouldn't really matter that much, but at least he has what he considers valid reasons for it having taken that long.]
no subject
[Such a sweet lacking something as important as a name? That earned her some extra petting.]
Well, I think "Keba" suits you pretty well. Sounds like someone nicer gave you a name---
Hang on, your shinkis? You're a god?
no subject
While Shun makes no comment on Chinatsu's small talk to the bird, he does give her a rather flat stare at her incredulous reaction to him being a god.]
I'm standing in for Nekhbet. Egyptian pantheon, patron of the original Necropolis, represented by vultures. You must not have been here long if you're surprised someone like me was given a role like that. [He doesn't make nice, but at least he's diligent. There are far worse gods Shun's met and heard of than he is.]
no subject
[She had no idea who that god was, so it was a good thing that he explained.]
No..just got here pretty recently actually. Ah---now that you mention it, with your attitude it makes lot of sense.
no subject
Though he doubts he's going to like the answer, he picks up on her remark about his attitude with a neutral raise of the brow.] "Your attitude" could mean a lot of things if you're connecting it to that.
no subject
[Oops, did that come out? She glances at him briefly, noticing not much change in his expression, but it seemed like he was looking for a more detailed answer. Her gaze returns to the bird.]
Well...the condescension, for one.
no subject
Her follow-up remark, however rude, gets nothing more than a huff that's somewhere between dismissive and amused from Shun.]
So you're talking about things you have no idea about, then. [His attitude towards godhood means that would be about the least likely cause for his condescension he could think of.]
no subject
[Keba seemed to like him enough, so she'll just take his word for it.]
Enlighten me, then.
no subject
Shun shrugs a little at Chinatsu's remark.]
You're assuming I wanted to be a god, or consider myself one. I might use the word for ease of address, but in the end I'm a human doing a god's job, not a god. It doesn't give me a reason to hold it over anyone else.
no subject
...I thought you guys were reincarnations of the gods or something?
[she looks back at him]
So you guys are human too..?
[Or..were. Chinatsu hadn't really had this talk with Oona or other gods yet. She figured they were different from shinkis.]
no subject
[That last remark in particular is very flat and neutral, a little too much to be natural. While Shun's confirmed the fact with at least one other god, he's also not entirely sure what his own situation is.]
I don't think I've met more than a handful of people here who were actually gods or a similar kind of being before being made one here.
no subject
...So it doesn't matter whether you want to be one or not? You don't have a choice?
