[closed] Is there a place left there for me
Who: Allen and Lux
Where: Beginning at Michael's church, then moving into the Near Shore
When: July 22nd
Summary: Homecoming for a certain exorcist-god, who thought it was a good idea to get lost in Vegas for a few weeks. Someone pray for him, he's going to need it.
[ It's been a long few weeks.
Between Link's sudden disappearance and Allen's decision to depart for places unknown (and then not answering his cellphone...), the church has become a lonely place. While it was never particularly messy, when left to her own devices, and with little else to do but work and feeding the animals and spirits that called their domain home, the church was a much cleaner place.
Too clean, really. Pristine couldn't even properly describe it. It was like someone was taking out her every frustration on any poor dust bunny she happened to come across—mostly because she was. The grounds as well were immaculate, each bush trimmed with precision and grace. The cobblestone walkways were free of any sort of dirt or leaves. It was stunning, really.
But also very telling. Someone was not pleased.
And that someone could be found around the grounds early that morning, her hair tied into a ponytail and a training sword tied at her side. Her arms filled with the usual items she left for those creatures that called their church home—offerings for those wayward spirits, and other bits of food for the animals that often waited eagerly to be fed—she didn't look irritated.
Not yet, at least. ]

Probably because his mind is elsewhere when he finally reappears back at the church, returning from do you really even want to know where. With a bright smile on his face and a briskness in his step. Dressed well even for Allen in a trim waistcoat and tie with his sleeves rolled up—although in this era especially with his hair tied back it rather makes him look like either a very dapper bartender or waitstaff.
He's also carrying three (yes, three) suitcases like they're nothing. (Suitcases? Really? Well they are rather... old-fashioned.
He found antiques?) ]Ah, Lux! [ This bright-eyed radiant good cheer. So genuinely happy to see her! Like he has the best news to share! ]
Good morning!
[ Like not a day has passed ]
[1/2]
Or at all, her mind chimes in; they have followers to be sure, but for someone to seek out the church at sun-up, it must be something important! Back straightening as she forces every possible thought of social decorum from her mind (it's fine! Probably!!), the blond turns in one swift, exceedingly polite motion.
Her smile radiant and welcoming, there's a lilt to her voice and a noticeable radiance in her features. Years of practice brought together in this one moment as she smiles bright as the sun, begins to speak. ]
Hello, wel–
[2/3] nope sorry I lied
[3/3]
Then the smile almost immediately cracks as her brain finally catches up, because standing there in front of her was her good-for-nothing god who, without warning, decided to just up and leave! ]
Ah–Allen?! What are you–
[ It sounds almost startled, and the offerings in her arms shift as she nearly drops them in shock. What was he doing here all of a sudden?! Well, no, that's a stupid question, since he lives here after all! But after all this ti—
...wait a minute. Suitcases? When did he get suitcases? Allen Walker, the man who lives in the bargain bin and pinches every penny until it squeals, has something like that? You mean to say he planned all of this, insofar that he packed suitcases?
Shock very quickly shifts, and while he seems his normal cheery self, and the animals around the church look happy enough to see him (that might be a bluebird sitting on your nice new jacket, Allen), Lux's demeanor quickly grows sour.
Oh. He thinks he can come crawling back suddenly with a smile and a "Ah, Lux! Good morning;" like that will smooth everything over with no repercussions. ]
...Don't "good morning" me, Allen Walker.
[ You obviously don't know her well enough, do you, Allen. ]
no subject
Did he find cigarettes?)But the icy greeting does have him pulling up a little short from and blinking for a moment then. Him and bluebird both, who he freezes from wiggling his finger in greeting to. ] Oh, ah. . .
[ THINK, ALLEN. THINK. WHY IS SHE MAD ]
. . .afternoon?
[ rip ]
no subject
It hurt a bit, she had to admit.
But all that immediately flew out the window as soon as he came walking back onto the church grounds, looking refreshed and cheerful.
And not only that, but he didn't even seem to know what she was actually angry about. It should be obvious!! How could he not know?! He must be playing dumb in the hopes that she would be lenient on him. Like that would work.
Taking a few steps forward, her brows raise slightly. ]
No, try again.
[ Better think fast! ]
no subject
She's invading his personal space. Lux never invades his personal space. This is probably bad. ]
Lux, your face is a little scary like that, you know...
[ Stalling: go. ]
no subject
She might be much shorter, but that doesn't mean she's any less intimidating, apparently. ]
I wonder why it's so scary, then. Maybe because someone decided to leave without so much as a word for two whole weeks?
[ Stalling isn't going to work here.
Actually, now that she takes a closer look, that coat...
Speaking of lack of personal space, if she's able, Lux will grab at one of his sleeves, looking down at it. This is really nice, actually. She looks at his sleeve, deep in thought. ]
...Where did you get this?
no subject
Which is why he suddenly gets a rather awkward sort of smile—and goes quite still. ]
Sorry, did you say... two weeks?
[ a beat ]
Really? [ haha...
Don't move Allen, don't even blink. She's probably going to kill you. ]
no subject
Yes. Two weeks.
[ With each word pronounced, like every single syllable brought him closer to his fate.
Perhaps the only true saving grace here is the fact that, wait, no, this fabric actually felt really nice under her fingers. This was nicer than what he usually tended to wear
did he actually spend a good amount of money on something for once, and at that she gives his arm a brief, uncharacteristic tug to take a better look. ]...Where did you get this? This is really nice.
[ Is it a trap, or was she actually complimenting his tastes? ]
no subject
Maybe she'll overlook how much he's sweating now and just how... very gingerly he tries to pull his arm back. ]
Maybe we should go inside first.. [ But, two weeks!! He didn't know!! No wonder she's mad but it only felt like a day or three to him!?
Though maybe that explains why he was able to get so much—no, you know, not the time.. ]
no subject
Feeling him tugging his arm back, she'll let him with little fight, although that does get a surprised blink from her. She was getting ready to feed everyone, but if he wanted to go inside right this instant...
She could take care of it later. Probably. ]
Fine by me.
[ Was it? Was it really? Judging the way that she led him along, there was still more than a little tension.
Two weeks, Allen Walker. Two weeks in the church by herself, part of that time she spent by herself as a child (don't ask, it's weird and she still doesn't completely understand), so forgive her if she's a bit irked.
Which should be apparent as soon as she opens the door to the church and how... wow, was this place always so clean on the inside? ]
no subject
But he's equally surprised that she would so readily agree. He was mostly just trying to buy time to think—and maybe let her defuse a bit while he tried to figure out how to answer. Also somewhere up in his head it seemed less likely she'd beat the crap out of him inside. But two weeks!! (Well it does make sense in retrospect now.) But he didn't think it'd actually work and her mood would divert so suddenly. Girls are confusing. Even when they're Lux.
But let's try diplomacy. Even if he's following behind her rather... carefully. ]
It, ah—looks very nice... [ Why does that somehow feel ominous though.. ]
Did you get to have some time to relax then, Lux?
[ He sounds so
desperatehopeful. Please say yes. ]no subject
Glancing back as he tries to carry an admittedly tense conversation, she would have left it alone. But when he asked about if she had time to relax, the shorter blond stops, her back still facing him.
Okay, you know what, no, we're not doing this. That simmering anger of hers was about to bubble over. ]
When someone happens to leave mysteriously one day without so much as a note about where he might be? Not to mention everything that happened while you were gone. Did I have time to relax... how can you ask me that?
[ Turning toward him, she finally looks like she's let herself get genuinely mad. Even in the morning light, the glow about her is obvious, and she clenches and unclenches her hands at her sides. ]
I don't care if you decide to come and go as you please, that's your business and I won't stop you. But the considerate thing to do is to tell someone that you're leaving, rather than simply walking out with so much as a goodbye!
[ He wanted her to get mad. Well, be careful what you wish for. ]
1/2
But ah, she did before too, didn't she? Although before she was...
...
She'd been blushing, hadn't she.
Oh god.Setting his suitcases down in a hurry, he holds both his hands up this time and waves them lightly. ]
It's not like that! [ No, he really doesn't have a leg to stand on to defend himself, he's not even going to try, but.. ]
It happened really quickly and I didn't realize it'd been that long, so...
2/2
I'm sorry, it really wasn't like that...
I got you something, though. [ He won't blame her if she throws it in his face given it was just something he saw that reminded him of her and, remembering she probably wouldn't be happy about where he was and what he was doing—thought to get it
as a peace offering. It's not like he's someone who usually buys anything, after all. Even if he got a bit more used to gifts and gift-giving in Enprise. ]I know it doesn't make it any better, but... [ But please don't think he was quite so callous as to not think of her at all the whole time. Also he left a note but, well—
It wouldn't be the first time Timcanpy ate something he shouldn't, let's be real. He's a bit too fond of pens. ]
no subject
Crossing her arms over her chest, she looks at him skeptically as he continues to backpedal. Her ire does begin to ebb when she sees how crestfallen he becomes with each attempt, and the glow starts to ease somewhat.
But when he says that he got her something, the shinki stops, blinking once, twice, and looking not quite sure of how she should react. Was he giving her a peace offering? ]
You... what?
[ She sounds genuinely surprised, arms no longer crossed as tightly. ]
no subject
He just cracks a slightly sheepish smile and reaches not for the suitcases like she might suspect—but for the breastpocket of his waistcoat and pulls out something small and slim. A box like that—jewelry? (That'd be weird. Also expensive. And it's Allen.) ]
It's a little small, but... [ That offhand nonchalance...
...the tone of a cheater? ]
It seems like something you'd like. [ Her more than him. Given that when she opens it there will be a small crystal suncatcher inside. One which, yes... just might be in the shape of an angel.
She likes that sort of thing more than him. Consider it a small concession. Especially since he's going to fidget a bit until she says something. ]
no subject
No, that couldn't be, it would be so unlike him to get some kind of jewelry (and for her... no, she couldn't accept that, definitely not!). While she does give him an incredulous look at his off-hand comment, Lux takes the box just the same. She looks at it, then looks back at him with the same doubtful expression before.
Is this really supposed to be for her? Allen, what did you do?
Opening the box, she stops rather suddenly, looking down at the contents and immediately looking up at him in a mild panic. ]
This is—it's beautiful, why would you...
[ Help, she doesn't know what to do with this!! ]
no subject
Because he helped her pick out one once before. She just doesn't remember it.But he smiles and seems to re-center himself a bit in her reaction. Timcanpy spirals down as well finally, taking familiar roost against his neck. ]
It reminded me of you. [ And he says it so simply. Like that just explains everything.
There's something a little—else in his smile though. Something knowing and calm—grounded—by it as he lifts his chin with a gentle sort of certainty and looks over his shoulder at the room.
Because he said the exact same words to her last time, too. ]
And if this is our home it should have things in it that make it feel like that, shouldn't it? [ That too—
That too is what he told her the first time he helped her pick out her suncatcher. The first thing she'd ever decorated her room back in the hall of heroes with. When she'd felt so far away from any sense of home—or wondered if she'd ever truly had it.
He'll just never tell her he found this one in a casino. ]
[1/2]
Cheater. He got it because it reminded him of her... And at that, she blinks a few times, looking down at the gift box in her hand and slowly, delicately taking the crystal angel out. Holding it with two fingers and letting it hang suspended, Lux watches as the early morning light filters through, catching and refracting in small rainbows on the wall.
Her eyes growing wide in almost childlike wonder, she stands there for a moment in silence, before finally speaking softly. ]
It's so bright...
[ And somehow, perhaps because of that, it reminded him of her. In some small way, perhaps he saw her the same way—someone bright and colorful like the sun catcher she held—and while she couldn't quite see it herself, knowing that...
This is nice...
Looking at him when he finally spoke again, Lux contemplates this, then gently puts the crystal angel back into its box. ]
In that case, I'll need to know the kinds of things you like; it hardly seems fair that you get me something nice and I don't return the favor. And I want this place to be filled with things that you enjoy as well.
[ Although— ]
[2/2]
Probably both. ]
Don't think that this means I'm not mad at you for leaving without a word. Do that again, and you'll need much more than that to avoid punishment. But I'll accept your peace offering for now.
[ Death averted (for now)? ]
Where did you go off to, anyway, that you managed to lose track of two whole weeks?
no subject
Ah…. [ She really didn’t get his note then. He waves his hand offhandedly for a moment. ]
It was a prayer. Not a big one! [ It’s added a little hurriedly. It’s not like he was off fighting ayakashi without her
again. ]But once I was there it was more than one kind of thing like that, so…
[ His shoulders lift a bit helplessly, scratching at his cheek for a moment. Haha? ] I didn’t really think it’d take very long.
no subject
[ She blinks a few times at that, looking just a bit confused. Allen, the last time you did that, she ended up there anyway. Just. Falling from the sky.
She would really like to avoid that happening again, if at all possible. Although he does get her thinking, her head tilting slightly to one side. ]
What do you mean, "one kind of thing like that"?
[ If it was a prayer, he would (probably) say so. What..? ]
What could possibly take you so long to take care of? And in any case, you could have called and told me.
no subject
About that... ] I, ah—
Lost my phone.
