open/catchall: a sensei's job is never done
Who: Cho Hakkai and you!
What: Kicking around the Heavens, refereeing pet conflicts, providing an education and continuing to test his new medication powers on unknowing human subjects
Where: Various
When: August 6 - 10, 2016
Chicken Feed - August 6
[Hakkai owes a few thank-yous for the help he got while he was sick. As annoying as it is to have needed so much help, he can't exactly ignore it; so he's gone the domestic route, made up a truly astounding number of small fruit baskets and other little food gifts, and is paying visits to the temples of his helpers to leave them by the front door.
He knocks first, of course, to deliver his thanks in person, but if no one answers he'll just leave the basket with its little thank-you tag.
At Sharak Sanzo's temple, he encounters a slight snag, namely, the fact that he can't seem to get anywhere near close enough to leave the basket on the front stoop. It's shielded, and he's going to have to wait until a resident wanders by.
A few of the resident chickens notice his presence, and peck their way thoughtfully in his direction, and Hakkai considers them, and considers the basket he's brought Sharak... and opens up the large bag of freeze-dried mealworm treats to start tossing them to the chickens. Until someone notices and lets him in, passersby may notice Hakkai crouched on the roadside surrounded by a dozen eager hens, offering little dried worms to each one by hand. It's only a matter of time before he starts convincing them to do tricks.]
Reading, Rites & 'Rithmetic - August 8 & 10
[Hakkai's at the school for his classes as usual, but before and after class, he's also putting up some hand-written flyers in the downstairs hallway. They read,
Seeking Shinki & Anyone Willing to Teach Shinki Spells
Practical Daily Lessons: Borderlines, Spellcasting, Shinki Combat Advice
Knowledge Shared is Knowledge Gained. Contact Cho Hakkai If Interested.
They're also illustrated with helpful hand-drawn ayakashi in a creepy, technically proficient but over-detailed style that makes the creatures even more grotesque. Hakkai, when not teaching or pasting up flyers, can be found in the library on the ground floor grading math workbooks.]
Herding Cats - August 9
Kishi, he doesn't want to play with you.
[Hakkai is standing in his temple's entryway, doors thrown wide, addressing a black-and-white cat in an exasperated tone. The cat is on his hind legs, pawing at Hakkai's knee and patting his thigh entreatingly as he meows at the white dragon curled up on Hakkai's shoulders. Another cat, a grayish tabby, trots up to the tableau, sits down, looks up at the dragon and adds her demanding meow to the first cat's.
Hakkai looks like he's developing a headache.]
Musha, no. Kishi! Down.
[Reluctantly, the black-and-white cat drops back down to his haunches and meows again. Hakkai lifts a finger scoldingly in their direction.] Go play.
[Suddenly, Jeep flares his wings, catches the wind, and drops from Hakkai's shoulders to soar up and a few feet further away from the entryway, into the front street. Musha and Kishi tear after him, eager paws kicking up dust from the roadway.
Jeep, midair, transforms, and a jeep thuds down onto the street right in front of the cats' noses. They yowl, hiss, and break for the safety of the temple, moving so fast there's nothing but a few floating hairs left in their wake. The Jeep's headlights blink on and off in something that looks a lot like silent, smug laughter, and Hakkai sighs wearily.]
Well, that's one way to teach them.
Heavenly Delivery Service - August 6 - 10
[When he's not otherwise occupied, Hakkai's still taking his homemade, and divinely powerful, medicines down to followers praying for healing. He has a large and carefully sectioned toolbox, padded with folded cloth for the glass jars and bottles, that goes with him, and a long handwritten list of prayers. Even with teleportation taking him to the general area, he's having to do some walking around and asking directions before he finds the proper house.
It doesn't help that quite a lot of them are in apartment buildings, although, at least, gods don't need to be buzzed in by a resident.
Anyone near enough to one of his prayer delivery locations might find themselves approached by a young man in a monocle, clearing his throat politely as he shifts the extremely large and heavy toolbox he's holding, and glances down at a memo pad in his free hand.]
Excuse me. Would you happen to know where...
[He flips a page.]
Happy Takada Apartments is? It's supposed to be somewhere in this neighborhood.

[There are other ways -- asking the gods and shinki who are already experienced, for one -- but they don't seem too eager to share information about their weaknesses and their pasts. Yukine's been the most forthcoming, but he's almost as young as some of the other shinki, and Yato clearly doesn't give him as much information as he should.
Hakkai shrugs, straightening up.]
I don't mind a bit of exercise.
no subject
I guess it'll depend on how much you count as a 'bit.' It's not too far from here to reach the land itself, so I guess there's that.
[ With Hakkai straightening up, Shizuo gets up from the chair to lead the way. After all, if the guy's used to climbing up a bunch of stairs up a big hill (thanks Sharak,) then this is only a little worse. Which is made up for by the lack of rude roosters and with how shade was actually possible. ]
We keep the place pretty stocked if you end up hungry or thirsty, too. It's sort of habit, but I don't really eat or drink as much as I normally did, so we've got a surplus.
no subject
It's still a fairly long climb. He smiles mildly at Shizuo in response, working his way up. He could teleport, of course, but he hasn't seen the place first, and he's grown cautious about that after a few early mishaps.]
I don't eat or drink much myself these days -- which does save on grocery bills -- but thank you for the offer.
By the way, do you know if Izumo did anything unusual before falling asleep? Other than working a little too hard?
no subject
Still, there's definitely a 'castle town grounds' sort of thing, and Shizuo's leading Hakkai over to the main building area to get over to Izumo's room. ]
Unusual... Not really. Then again, he's someone that keeps taking projects on, even when he doesn't have enough time, and that's part of his 'normal.' I'm not even sure he slept properly after performing the ablution. He might've napped a couple of times?
[ Which is a lot for Izumo, really. ]
no subject
[Blunt, but, well. Shizuo seems to be something that isn't quite standard human. Hakkai hasn't seen any hints of that from Izumo, but all that means is that he doesn't know for certain what other traits the man might have.
And perhaps collapsing into a days-long hibernation is normal for him, if he goes without sleep so regularly outside of that.]
... I suppose he could just be worn out.
[He falls in behind Shizuo until they reach the room in question.]
no subject
[ Of course, with someone that was content to assume that the lookalike was his twin, or at least brother, that seemed like what it had to be. Hakkai said he was human, and if he really was related to Izumo, then he had to be human as well.
Opening the door, he could see both Izumo and his own redheaded god sleeping on their own futons near each other. This was probably the only time that Hakkai's seen the lookalikes in the same room, so of course one of them is sleeping. ]
The only times I know that he gets sleep is when he's napping around Goten. Even while he's here, maybe the guy'll lay back for a bit, but he really doesn't rest.
lmk if there's anything about this that's not accurate!
[Which, if that's true, he unquestionably should. Hakkai crosses to the futon, kneeling next to it and examining the man. No visible injuries, and he doesn't have any marks of dehydration or distress on his face. Temperature -- he presses the back of his hand to Izumo's forehead -- normal.
Thoughtfully, he spreads one hand over Izumo's head, the other over his chest, and focuses. The glimmer of energy around his palms is much more subdued than usual, as it finds no injuries to heal, and after a few minutes of silent concentration, the glow dies entirely.
Hakkai glances up.]
I think you're right. As far as I can tell, there's nothing wrong with him. He's just... sleeping.
It's as accurate as I know!
[ They were pretty much opposites when it came to how much each one wanted to rest. One took on more projects than he had time in a day for, and the other considered basking in the sun as a very important hobby to keep up on.
The latter of which is raising his eyebrows while watching the bit of energy around Hakkai's hands as he's doing... Whatever he's doing. ]
So, is that the thing you were doing for my shoulder?
no subject
[Hakkai shakes his head, gazing down at Izumo with an editorial lift of his eyebrows.]
But I'm using less energy now than I would to heal someone. Perhaps this experience will convince him to get rest on a more regular basis?
[Or perhaps not. If he's stubborn enough to drive himself this far, he's stubborn enough not to learn better from a mere several-day bout of unconsciousness.]
no subject
[ Especially when that seems to be the only time he'll actually let his guard down enough to really sleep. If naps counted. ]
Honestly? Despite being the more capable and responsible of us, I'm pretty sure he's more stubborn than I am. Talking to him could really go either way.
[ Hey, Shizuo's proven that he's pretty self-aware, if not a little too harsh on himself. ]
no subject
[Goten does have that cute, earnest air. It could be an effective manipulation tactic. As for stubbornness, though....]
I wish you luck.
no subject
[ Supposedly the boy has that kind of effect on people? Not that Shizuo really knew- it just seemed to be a thing that came up. ]
But uh, thanks. I'll probably need it.
no subject
I'm sure.
Do check him for sleeping charms, by the way. Just in case.
no subject
[ It's the best he can do, as a simple person who was fine with letting his lookalike sleep it off. ]
no subject
That should do! And take care of yourself in the meantime, too.
[He bows and turns to take his leave.]
no subject
[ Hakkai was smart and perceptive enough to probably see himself out. Just in case, though... Of course this is one of the times when a young grey striped kitten slinks in and out of view.
Not that Hakkai will be given a heads up about those two kittens. He seemed to be familiar enough with cats. ]
Do you need a guide back out?
no subject
[He chuckles and disappears through the door with a casual little wave.]
