Summary: Mortals may be partying, but there's lots of work for the denizens of the Far Shore to do.



It's the final day of Obon and spirits are being sent back to their homes -- both the ancestral spirits that have been welcomed home for the duration of the festival and the mischievous spirits that have been plaguing the Heavens. But some of them might not go easy, so Amaterasu has requested that gods and shinki old and new alike help ensure the spirits' peaceful departure.



Mukae-bi

Fires have been lit on hillsides and near cemeteries to lead the spirits back to their resting places and to protect them on their way, but angry ghosts and ayakashi are trying to quench the fires so they can attack weaker spirits. Keep the firewood stocked and the fires blazing high while you fight off the attacks.

Heavenly Exorcisms

It's time to bring any possessed household items to the Near Shore to ensure that the spirits are sent safely on their way. Some might go peacefully, while others might have to be purified by fire in order to set the spirits free. Hope you weren't too attached to that chair.

(Careful... spirits that manage to hide from the housecleaning can become permanent guests!)

Guarding the Gates

Hidden pathways into the underworld in caves throughout Japan are open from sunset to moonset on this night to allow the spirits who have temporarily left to return. Gods and shinki must watch over these pathways and ensure that no dangerous ayakashi take the opportunity to escape from the underworld before the moon sets.

After-party

After the moon sets, the denizens of the Heavens can finally kick back. Everyone is invited to a private hot spring on the Far Shore, where a midnight banquet spread is waiting in thanks for their hard work. Wash off any blight in the hot springs and enjoy the banquet before heading back home for a good night's sleep.

[ A new god walks the steps of the Farshore, though most would hesitate to call him new. Hades has awakened after a long absence spent in deep slumber. But he's awakened without memories of his time here. The Heaven's have caught him up as much as his duty is concerned but there's still too much missing and for those more observant that others, he's also missing a few inches height-wise. ]


i. Guarding the Gates

[ Zero stands at the gate. The god of the Underworld allows the passing spirits to pass in silence while watching out for Ayakashi until the passing steps of another pull his attention away from the cave and toward the unknown arrival. ]

If you're going to sneak up on someone, be more discrete.


After-party

[ Zero doesn't partake in the feast, but late into the evening he makes use of the seemingly empty hot-spring to cleanse the blight that now marred his shoulder where an ayakashi had gotten past his defenses marking the god. Zero steps into the hot-springs and for a moment, lets himself slide down into the heated waters letting his mind drift. ]

i. prelude to heart break?

[ Ichiru sighs. The first thing he gets when he finds the missing god after a month. Talk about being rude. ]

Honestly, you could be a bit more discreet about your manners, seeing how you always seem to nit pock at mine.

[ He retorts as he strides over. ]

Raise you a heartbreak right here

[ Zero's shoulders stiffen at the sound of that voice. He turns and manages not to break down this time, but it's clear in his eyes that his very presence is enough to shake him. ]

[ Ichiru doesn't get why he gets like this even though they're both fairly used to each other's presence by now. ]

What is it? Did something get caught in your throat this time as well, Zero?

[ He mused as he stared directly at Zero. ]

[ He turns, not able to face him and it's through sheer will and knowledge that whatever he says might harm his brother that Zero stifles his emotions and manages to get out in an even tone: ]

[ Because that really does piss him off that he thinks he can just act as though Ichiru doesn't know about his own condition. ]

[ Being a Godless Shinki, he really had no responsibilities to protect anyone other than himself. Even more so that he was able to avoid being without a God for too long. He's pretty certain this was against some kind of code that neither the Gods or whatever punished him for yet.

He had considered and played with the thought of getting a God for himself, but there was no one that particularly piqued his interest-- except one. He's been mulling on that thought since the first day they met. Even now, he still couldn't really forget that strange tug he had towards the other. Despite not knowing much even now, he was able to at least piece small things together.

Except-- Zero had forgotten everything prior to his return and Ichiru made no efforts to bring up anything other than creating lies to indulge the other in-- or perhaps to play with his brother to his heart's content. Some part of him had already accepted that there was some sort of familial bond that transcends even his amnesia.

Unlike Zero, he was in his own thoughts without being in the hot spring. Instead he eyed the injury on the other's shoulder. Careless.... Then again it wasn't like Ichiru didn't gain his own injuries from what had happened. He was much better at hiding them. ]

[ It's only a moment, a careless moment, but he somehow misses another's presence. His eyes snap open and when he catches sight of his brother, the words that he wanted to say suddenly left him. He stares back instead, not wanting to intrude on the moment. ]

[ Ichiru glances sideways towards Zero when he felt the other's eyes on him. Unlike Zero, he made no attempts to dip into the spring for whatever his reasons are. It was quiet right now so he didn't seem to mind it too much.

However, he was quite troubled by the whole conversation they had prior. Not that he could blame someone for losing their memories. ]

You should say what's on your mind, rather than staring at me as if you have seen a ghost.

[ That's exactly the problem. He is seeing a ghost. A ghost he'd just visited only minutes before being brought under the guise of duty. ]

Why... did you stay?

[forsakens]

[ Only Ichiru really doesn't get why he's behaving like he's seen him for the first time but asking about it won't do either of them good, so he just goes along with it as if it doesn't matter. ]

You're going to have to be less cryptic about your words if you want me to answer your questions.

[ At the temple of Hades. Why did you stay?!

It's what he wants to say, but he bites back those words knowing he could trigger something if he went that route, instead he changed that line of conversation. ]

You and Itachi.

You got along while I was asleep.

[ At least, that's what he's assuming. He's grasping at straws here, trying to shift the conversation away from a potentially damaging line. ]

[ Yeah, he knew he'd been... sort of hovering around but he couldn't help it. What else was he supposed to do? he was up again. He felt like he hadn't spoken to Zero in forever. ]

[ But when the other called out having felt his presence, the former shinobi too a few steps out. He paused, just off to the side, a bit behind him. ]

You're awake. [ A pause, and a sigh. ] I...

I was worried.

[moonlitknight]

[ Zero stares, a hint of confusion lingers in the depths of his eyes though he quickly smothers it with a neutral gaze. ]

Who are you?

[candyconsumption]

Who...

[ There's a pause as he registers ehat was said. Itachi's red eyes give a slow blink. Wait... ]

[ What? ]

Zero... that's not funny.

[moonlitknight]

[ His gaze remains steady, taking in the stranger but at his words - a repetition of the same feeling as before - Zero understands. ]

You knew me.

From before.

[candyconsumption]

Before...

[ Then he realizes something. His eye line is all off. Before... before... ]

Zero... you're smaller.... you and Ichiru are the same height now...

[ He's taller than Ichiru by a few inches still bit but he can imagine that they look the same. They were twins after all. But what does he mean smaller? Still that's not as important as the mention of that name. ]

You do you know Ichiru.

[ He's watching him closely now, gaze steady. ]

[Chinatsu tenses when he calls her out.]

...I wasn't sneaking or anything.

[Okay, maybe she was. But it was because she wasn't sure whether it was Ichiru or not standing there and considering how embarrassing their last meeting was, she was hoping to just grab a little more wood before she headed back to the fire.]

You're the other one, right? Not Ichiru?

[ A look. You have his attention. ]

How do you know Ichiru?

[She was ready to take on some snide comment, but was surprised it didn't come. Yeah, not Ichiru alright.]

We've uh...bumped into each other a few times.

[Bumped heads is more like it, but details.]

Looks like you're doing better.

[ That comment has him looking her over. ]

[ Before he lost his memories, that is. ]

[Talk about deja vu, except again, with less snark. Which was weird with how similar they looked.]

[To be fair, he was pretty out of it that time.]
