August Training
Who: Everyone
What: Information and Training
When: August 15
Where: Bishamon's temple, the Far Shore
Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods and shinki

In anticipation of the latest round of new arrivals, Heaven has partnered with the new gods and shinki to organize a very helpful informational reception.
Gods and shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are, should they allow it, guided kindly towards Bishamon's temple. In that vast complex they are brought to a traditional-style dojo. The gods and shinki are free to take their time during this day to learn about the details of their new life from Amaterasu's shinki or from the many veteran new god and shinki volunteers.

God Training
- Unfortunately, Bishamon is away on business today, but her shinki as well as Amaterasu's ever-present shinki and any volunteering gods will offer information regarding being a god and what is expected of them, such as prayers. It is encouraged that gods group up together to practice what they've learned and discuss their ideologies.
Newly arrived gods are still expected to communicate to their shinki the information* they themselves receive as orientation when they arrive.
Shinki Training
- Various volunteers are stationed around the building, passing out helpful informational pamphlets. There are many shinki, including Bishamon's and Amaterasu's, who will be more than happy to train in using the borderline as well as offering a lecture on the basics of what is expected of a shinki and the importance of teamwork with other shinki and with gods. It is encouraged that shinki group up together to practice what they've learned and discuss their ideologies.
Physical Training
- The dojo is stocked with a wide variety of practice weapons, traditional and modern. There are volunteers here as well, willing to assist in basic training. (Or even more advanced sparring, depending on the volunteer.) This is vital for gods who, for example, find themselves with a sword shinki but are at risk of cutting off their own toes.
It's also useful for veteran new gods wishing to train with their current partner shinki.
Rest and Refreshments
- There is a garden off the dojo that is free to be used for rest and conversation.
Should anyone wander outside the designated area, some shinki of Bishamon's will attach themselves to them and not leave them be until they return to the dojo.
There is a refreshments table provided. It is covered with light snacks and various kinds of hydrating drinks. There is a little sitting area set up for people to relax in after they have finished their training or if they're just taking a quick break to cool down. Even hand towels are provided by Bishamon's helpful shinki. The Heavens wants everyone to stay in good condition!

In Summary:
- Get all the information you can handle
- Veteran new gods and shinki are welcome to volunteer showing the ropes
- Get in some training
- Don't get dehydrated
- Spectate if you want
- Have fun~

[He gives the weapons a thoughtful glance of his own, which, after a few seconds, he transfers to Chikusa.]
What do you plan to use it for?
no subject
[He blink a few times, not sure what other answer he was supposed to give.]
It's a weapon, so....
no subject
[He picks up a shorter knife, edged on both sides with a handle almost the length of the blade.]
Close-quarters combat?
[He glances over the knives and -- ah, there. He sets down the throwing knife as an example, closer to Chikusa, and picks up a sturdy, eight-inch knife with a metal crosspiece at the end of the blade to prevent someone else's weapon from sliding down to take a finger off.]
Or stabbing someone in the back?
[A thin stiletto, about four inches with a stout handle, and easy to conceal, joins the other two. Hakkai adds, tapping the throwing knife:]
And, of course, any of them could be poison-dipped.
no subject
I'm better at mid-ranged combat, and borderlines can be used as ranged attacks as well.... But that leaves me vulnerable for closer attacks.
[A sort-of shrug.]
Is what I was thinking...
no subject
[He hands the knife over.]
-- How does it feel? Would you like something lighter?
no subject
...Maybe. Just to compare. But the handle is sturdy, it feels like.
[He can appreciate a solid grip, after all.]
It's definitely different to what I regularly use...
no subject
[He remembers them well, and their payloads of sharp, poisoned needles. They are indeed very different from a simple hunting knife.
While Chikusa considers the knife Hakkai'd offered him, Hakkai glances around the table until he finds a lighter, smaller blade. It's not tiny -- it's still long enough to inflict a fatal wound between the ribs -- but it'll be easier to conceal, and it still has a decent finger guard above the hilt. He picks that one up, too, testing its balance before he passes it over to Chikusa.]
There -- they're both sturdy enough, I'd say.
no subject
[Unconventional weapons have a lot of advantages. No one looks twice if you start playing with a toy, which means they aren't looking when he tries to poison them, and it also means that those used to traditional combat don't often know what to do about them at first. But it goes both ways.... There's nothing for him to translate into other weapons, really.]
[So he waits as Hakkai goes through the weapons, clearly more experienced than he is, and Chikusa stirs at the latest blade. Putting the other down, he starts to fiddle with this one instead.]
Do you have a preference?
no subject
[He taps a thoughtful finger against his chin.]
With a poisoned weapon, though, it doesn't make enough of a difference to make up for the ease of concealment. I think that might be better for you.
no subject
[Besides, he'd rather save most of his poison for his needles, if he can get away with it. It's what makes them so effective. Putting down the shorter knife, he holds the one matching Hakkai's specifications to him.]
Show me?
no subject
[He taps a finger against the very bottom of the blade. Drawing the knife out past a pad with a little poison on it could coat the edge easily. Alternatively:]
Or if it could be dried onto the surface.
In any case.
[He takes the larger knife from Chikusa and falls into a knife-fighter's crouch, balanced on the balls of his feet with one hand wrapped around the hilt and the other held slightly across his body behind the knife, ready to defend and deflect incoming attacks.]
Knives aren't the sort of weapon you can easily parry with. They're too small; you don't have a long line to catch an enemy's weapon, the way you do with a sword. Your other hand is a better choice to deflect any attack you can't avoid; leave the knife free to attack. As they say, the best defense is a good offense.
Your main target is the torso, especially the gut. Ribs tend to stop and catch your blade, and a deep, bleeding gut wound will put almost anyone down, even if they take a while to die.
[He demonstrates a low, swift lunge, knife plunging to the hilt into an imaginary opponent, and stops, arm outstretched.]
Fabric and flesh can catch a blade, too, but unlike bone, you can cut your way out.
[He demonstrates a twist of his wrist, sharp edge of the knife cutting a semicircle into imaginary flesh.] Like so. It'll widen the wound and speed up blood loss, too.
no subject
[That's a pursuit for later. Instead, fingers tucked into his pockets, Chikusa watches Hakkai take his stance and listens to the lecture. It's pretty easy to take in what he says- the older man gets to the point in a way he likes.]
What about hitting limbs? Any wound is a good wound, but if you were aiming for somewhere in particular....
no subject
[He mimes a horizontal slash.]
So, for instance, if you tried for a stab--
[Arm outstretched, he reenacts his earlier stab, and then uses his free hand to indicate a turn of the opponent's body out of the path of the weapon.]
And your target dodged, like so; you can try for a slash along the outer edge of their arm as you retreat.
[He turns the blade, drawing it back with vicious force along the imaginary opponent's shoulder.]
no subject
[Slashing more than stabbing, arms unless you can reach groin or knees or ankles.... Got it. Chikusa holds his hand out for the knife.]
Are there any particular ways to hold it?
no subject
[Hakkai demonstrates, tucking his thumb safely down over his fingers.]
You wouldn't want it to be in the way of your attack.
no subject
[His yoyos are complex enough. While Chikusa wouldn't trade them for anything else- they have pros he quite appreciates- it also means he doesn't really care for learning more complex weapons.]
[At least, not right now, when all of his studying is going into spells anyway.]
no subject
[He nods politely to Chikusa. Straightforward doesn't necessarily mean easy.]
no subject
[There's a low sigh. That'd just be embarrassing.]
no subject
[Did you hope to leave that politely unspoken, Chikusa? Too bad.
It really would be, of course. Hakkai would not heal him without teasing.]
But a little practice should help you get the feel of it before you expect to use it in combat.
no subject
Yes. It would. [Are you happy now, you troll?] Anyway... That's what these events are for anyway, right...? Practice?
no subject
[He chuckles, and waves a hand in the general direction of the practice dummies set up along the side of the dojo.]
I'll leave you to it. Let me know if you have any other questions?
no subject
[Or if he just wants more tips. Either way, he starts to shuffle away to go learn new and exciting forms of murder.]
