[open] time for the training montage

Who: Yamato no Kami Yasusada and you!
Where: Menrva's school grounds; Tuesdays and Thursdays in the ballroom, Saturdays outdoors
When: Throughout April, beginning April 5th. Schedule here!
What: In a shocking turn of events, a sword spirit has offered to teach a swordfighting class. AMAZING.
Warnings: sparring, and Yamato

The basics

Since his suggestion for a sword class was sanctioned by Elsa, Yamato has been busy. Gathering supplies, searching for students and volunteers alike--a lot of effort has gone into preparations for this class.

The first class, and all subsequent Tuesday/Thursday classes, will take place in the ballroom. (Indoor shoes are required.) Introductions will be made, along with a few fun demonstrations of strikes, take-down methods, and other skills that will be covered in the class. Questions and suggestions are always acceptable.

With that out of the way, it's time to practice! Repetitive sets and form practice will make up the majority of Tuesday/Thursday classes. It can get tedious, but it's arguably the most important part of training, and Yamato is a strict and relentless teacher regardless of your level. Done with 50 reps of this strike? Great, time for 100 more! Think you've mastered this particular footwork? Time to trip you on your face! No mercy and no breaks until you fall down, or class is over.

The fun part

What would a sword class be without fighting? Wooden swords and protective gear have been provided. Usage of wooden swords is required, and protective gear is required for beginners and recommended for advanced students. Still, if you insist you don't need it, nobody's going to argue. Yamato won't hesitate to bruise or break bones either way.

Experienced fighters are encouraged to participate in demonstration matches, emphasizing the unique characteristics of their skills and styles. For practicing purposes, lower level students will be paired with more advanced fighters whenever possible. If there are no advanced partners available or a student is afraid for their life uncomfortable, lower level students will be paired together with supervision. A few training dummies have also been scrounged up for uneven numbers.

Competitive matches may take place on Saturdays, when the class is held outdoors. These will be 3 or 5 point matches, with each contact strike meriting 1 point. Students may challenge whomever they wish, Yamato included, as long as there is an advanced fighter around to referee and prevent death grave injuries.

The aftermath

The end of each class will involve a thorough cleaning of the ballroom-- and yes, it's just like it sounds. If your arms aren't about to fall off and you aren't covered in bruises, feel free to turn it into a competition! Races are fun, and the sooner it's done, the sooner you get to collapse. Food and beverages have also been provided outside the ballroom, so get some rest and chat with your fellow students. Group trips to some near shore restaurants for some post-practice bonding time are allowed and even encouraged. We're all comrades here, right? Right.

OOC notes:

-This is an open mingle for Yamato's sparring classes throughout the month! The first class will take place on April 5th, but feel free to use any date there is a class. Prose or brackets is fine!
-Tuesday and Thursday classes will take place in Elsa's ballroom, which means they'll be more restrained (practice sets and instructional sparring only). Please don't break the chandelier!
-Saturay classes are for competitive sparring matches, as well as anything a student would like to work on. This is where you can fly around and knock each other into trees and such.
-The class schedule is available for everyone to see, but Yamato has gone around recruiting and inviting people throughout March. Feel free to handwave getting an invitation if you'd like to come and play!
**NEW** -For anyone curious, Yamato practices and teaches Tennen Rishin Ryu style. I've linked some videos here if you want a visual reference!

[As soon as Yuuki swats away her sword, Elsa uses the momentum that grants her to slash at Yuuki again. She knows she won't hit her, but if she's at least a little faster than before, that's good. Improving little by little is better than not improving ta all.]

[As expected, Yuuki dodges out of the way...

But instead of leaving it at that, she actually darts behind Elsa, aiming an attack at her exposed back.

[Well, that's not something she was expecting, but stlil Elsa manages to whip out of the way. It means putting distance between them, but she didn't go down, and that's what counts.

Okay. This has gone up a level. Elsa charges at Yuuki, thrusting her sword at her.]
sleepingknight: ([Fight] that may never end.)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-11 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Yuuki charges to meet her, lashing out in an attempt to swat Elsa's sword to the side and aim the tip of her own at her throat in one quick, vicious movement.]
arealhardnose: (that didn't go so well)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-11 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yuuki would have hit Elsa with that move if not for how the shock of the attack makes Elsa lose her footing. She falls on her hip and lifts her practice sword up to defend herself in case Yuuki is thinking to attack her again.]
sleepingknight: ([Request] even if it seems)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-12 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
[She simply levels the blade to point it at Elsa, making it very clear she could get past her defenses even if she tried. However, she only holds it in place for a few seconds before backing away again, her posture relaxing.

If Elsa couldn't get her earlier, she certainly won't be able to now.
]

Elsa... You really need to practice more. You still can't even beat me.

[Her voice is surprisingly solemn. Yuuki's still but a lone shinki - if Elsa can't even defeat her...

How did she think she would be able to make it through hell?
]
arealhardnose: (unwell)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-12 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[If this were a real battle, Elsa would be dead. Unlike Zeltrax, Yuuki would probably not let Elsa live to tell the tale if she took Elsa down as an enemy.

Even so, and even without knowing anything about who Yuuki used to be, Elsa would disagree that Yuuki is 'just' a shinki, or 'just' anything.]

'Even'? [Elsa sits up, wincing a little. Her hip is goingto bruise later, and it won't be a pretty sight.] I don't think there's anyone here who can beat you, let alone me. I'm just a teacher.

[A teacher who's been through one long, awful nightmare that taught her how to fight, and a teacher who was made into a god, but still just a teacher.]
sleepingknight: ([Surprise] still lives on)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
But I'm still just a shinki. There's things out there that are stronger than me.

[That's just how it is. The Heavens, for example - and whatever took away Bo.]
arealhardnose: (mercy or hesitance)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-14 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Elsa is quiet as she stands. Yes, she has faced terrifying opponents, but--

But nothing. Yuuki is right, isn't she? A god is nearly powerless without their shinki, and if this had been a real fight, Elsa could have been killed. Or worse -- her sword practice could have been destroyed. Hakkai could have been killed, if she were fighting with him.]

Maybe I should stick to the wisdom part of my divine name, rather than the war.
sleepingknight: ([Sentimental] Is still alone)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
[That gets a slight, if solemn smile out of the girl.]

It's good to push your limits. Sometimes, all you can do is your best! But...

You should be careful not to get others hurt if you do.

[Hisoka did ultimately come back, even if he now lacks his memories. She can forgive Elsa for her poorly made attempt. But if it can be avoided...

She doesn't want to lose even more friends. Not again.
]
arealhardnose: (hollow sadness)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-14 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I know.

[Elsa still blames herself for Hisoka's death, for the cut on Hakkai's forehead, an injury sustained while in vessel form. She blames herself for nearly getting so many people trapped in hell forever, a fate far worse than death. Here, death is impermanent, but even Elsa can't escape from Izanami.]

I appreciate your advice, Yuuki. And please-- you're not 'just' anything. You're so important to so many people.

[As far as she can tell, there's no one here who doesn't like Yuuki, and the girl deserves to know that. Shinki are more than 'just' weapons. They're people, and they are just as important as Amaterasu herself.]
sleepingknight: ([Embarrassed] and the goal)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-16 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah. Well.]

A shinki is still a shinki! I'm sure there's lots of gods with more power than me.

[Which is kind of important in a place like this.]

But I'm still grateful for the friends I've made. Maybe some of them will disappear someday, but... Until then, I'll do everything I can to help them. That's something I can do, shinki or not.
arealhardnose: (tiny hope)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-17 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A god is nothing without their shinki. [That's what they say, and Elsa thinks it's true, though not because of the implications about servitude or the like. By now, she knows she would feel dead if anything ever happened to Hakkai or Sanzo. She would be nothing, at least for a ltitle while.]

That's something all of us can and should do. [Finally, Elsa manages a little smile.]
sleepingknight: ([Confident] still lives on)

[personal profile] sleepingknight 2016-07-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna hold you to that!

[She snaps an arm up for emphasis.]

Watch out for your people. I'm sure they'll watch out for you, too.
arealhardnose: (regal)

[personal profile] arealhardnose 2016-07-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no doubt that they will. [And that, at least, Elsa knows she can believe in.

Sighing, she nods at Yuuki.]
I'm going to make sure no one needs anything for class. Thank you, Yuuki. For everything.

[She offers the girl a wider smile, and if there's nothing more to say, she'll head off to check on whoever isn't sparring right now.]
