[open] this too shall pass
Who: Chikusa Kakimoto, Ken Joshima, three different animals, and you
What: When a god leaves, there's always a few people who end up left behind. Chikusa and Ken deal with it in the only way they know how- badly.
When: August 16 to start with and some days after it
Where: The empty clearing where Hestia's temple used to be
Warnings: A closed ablution will be happening in one thread, so some mild body horror at the least. Also a pair of teenagers in mourning dealing with loss unhealthily.
Hestia's temple has never outwardly been impressive. It had been small, and white, and done in the traditional Greek style- no bigger than a small house at best. The most memorable part of it, for anyone who has passed through the Far Shore, has been the recent addition of a goat tethered right outside its front door where it kept the grass in check.
There's no front door for it to be tethered to now. That would be because there's no temple at all.
For those passing through the Far Shore, they might come across a completely empty clearing which now holds nothing at all. And for those not inclined to wander? They might be drawn to it instead by the sound of what sounds like a dog or wolf howling.
That would be Ken.
All that's left in the clearing which once held Hestia's temple would be a pair of teenage boys, a roaming goat, a split-tailed demon cat which eyes any intruders warily, and Bon the Tibetan Mastiff who occasionally joins in with Ken's howling.
Oh. And the piles and piles and piles of various canned goods, snacks, and other such non-perishable foods that are scattered everywhere with no apparent rhyme or reason. The god and his temple may have gone but not, for some mystical reason, the literal hoards of food his shinki gathered throughout it.
To the side, Chikusa is curled up by a pair of large but simple duffel bags, his arms wrapped loosely around his long legs and his head bowed.
Ken is nearer the center of the clearing, on his knees. Once anyone who's come to investigate the din gets closer, the howls that sounded so purely canine at a distance become less so. From up close, they sound more like a strange cross-breed of a howl and a scream of pure anguish - with the tears on Ken's face suggesting the latter is closer to the truth. The impressive volume he's achieving further suggests that he'll continue until he's either heard by his god - wherever he's gone - or until his throat is so bloody and raw that he can't actually make sounds anymore.
A particularly close observer may be able to note that, on Ken at least, there's hints of blight already visible - a faint dark bruising creeping up the back of his neck, peeking out over the collar of his shirt. It's hard to tell if either shinki is aware of it.
[OOC: Let us know if you want Chikusa, Ken, or somehow both of them to respond to.]

[closed] Ablution x 2
the animals get the adults
[It's only when she's climbing one of the nearby trees and glances down at Chikusa's back that she realizes what a problem is on her paws as a trio of eyes stares at her from the back of his neck.]
[Her first solution is to try and get Bon to listen to her, although she's not sure why she tries. All he does is bolt off in the direction away from the school, leaving Pookie to travel on Pezzente the goat. That is how, on one side of the Far Shore, Bon plays Lassie to one Butch Cassidy and, on the other side, Pookie screeches her little heart out until Hakkai finally goes to see what the ruckus is.]
[The end result? Two different gods being lead by two different animals to the same spot with amazingly little to go on.... despite the fact that one of those animals can talk. No one said cats were helpful.]
no subject
Cats may not be helpful, but cats have more loyalty than they're commonly given credit for. Hakkai nods to her, briefly, and heads straight for Chikusa. He drops to one knee beside the boy.]
Your god.
[It's not a question. He knows the freshly-turned look of the soil all too well, and Ken hasn't stopped howling since Hakkai came within earshot. He casts a glance towards the other shinki.]
no subject
[He doesn't want to talk. Not to anyone- at least those who are still here. The only person he wants to speak with is gone, and who knows if he'll come back?]
[However, the movement of his hat disrupts his hair, nudging it just enough.... that a dull violet eye can be seen along the curve of his neck, slowly shifting to focus on Hakkai.]
[If Chikusa's noticed it, he hasn't paid it any mind.]

He catches the sounds of an animal crying, something he's familiar enough with to know that something is really wrong without knowing what's going on. But it's clearly not an actual animal, he realizes as he gets closer, and that just makes him more concerned.
And once he actually spots the boys, he's past the faithful ball of fluff quickly. Since a stranger - who seems to know Chikusa at least - is focused on one boy, he goes to the other who's still howling worse than a despairing coyote. The empty lot tells him enough to know the gist, but someone's sorrow can not be measured by what another person's sorrow feels like, and he can't imagine what it's like for a shinki to have their god disappear in the first place.
He crouches down beside Ken, face covered in concern, as is his voice. ]
Ken.
[ His eyes are searching for damages, finds the blight, and that only makes him even more concerned for both boys. ]

Unsurprisingly, his voice is hoarse when he speaks.] Axel-sama's gone...everything's gone...!

Ah, but when he gets on site, it is mostly people he's at least met. Just a couple that he has no clue about. Yet things make a little more sense, given who one of the people on the ground was. If he were a different person, there would've been a joke about tables being turned. Instead- ]
Seriously?
[ What the hell is up with all the food along the ground, too? ]

[Hakkai casts him a dry glance. A close examination might notice that Hakkai's holding himself in carefully perfect posture, with his mouth pressed flat at the corners, but he's doing a good job of covering it.]
We may need your help for both of them, I'm afraid. Their god disappeared.
[And they're taking it a little too hard. Not that he has any right to complain, of course... but.]

a boy and his dog
[The title of "exemplar" means nothing anymore. One can only be an exemplar to a god that is there, after all. Yet.... As he stands there, watching Ken, his howls from before still ringing in his ears, all he can feel is a twist in his stomach. He should have taken care of Ken. Even if they're no longer bound in any significant way, even if they don't even have to go the same god (a thought that has bile sting at his throat), he still feels.... a sense of responsibility for the other shinki.]
[And a sense of guilt that he let that blight get to such a point on Ken's skin.]
[Still... He tries not to linger on it for too long, tries to keep his focus on Ken as he shuffles forward.]
Ken. [His own voice is soft, not nearly as worn as Ken's is, but his eyes are considerably more red.] We need to go through ablutions.
no subject
...you mean that thing you did to that one guy awhile ago? [At least he remembers Hakkai's ablution.] How come?
[Ken's as oblivious about Chikusa's blight as Chikusa was about his. And even oblivious to his own, although he's vaguely aware of a dull ache spreading through him. But considering his emotional distress, physical pain hasn't been registering much, and has been getting chalked up to the wrong things when he does notice it.]

Ablution
[To put Chikusa or Ken through the ablution first?]
The vets will see you now, Ken
Man, how the hell were there so many kids in this place? At least the other two seemed to be just young enough. Well, it's not like they needed to know each other well enough for this to work out, right? Shizuo didn't even really like Chikusa, but he was still here to get it all done. Then again... He'll have to wait. ]
Right, so Ken is it? You ready to get this done?
[ It didn't seem like they were about to run off or put up a fight. Not like he did. So it should be easy for them to get started. ]

Time for confessions, Chikusa!
He doesn't really waste much time, looking over at the blighted shinki.]
You ready?
[Depending on how Ken's went, he's hoping that nothing would cause this ablution to go badly in the end.]
no subject
[But... He knows they don't really have time to mess around. He's already gotten this bad on his own, winding himself tighter and tighter in his own guilt. So Chikusa stays where he is, a hand dragging down his face.]
[He's not looking forward to this.]

Post-Fuckery
[But that can be settled later. Or perhaps now. Either way, what do you all do now? Chat with each other? Tell Bon what a good dog he is? Partake of the many hoards of food that are still scattered around? Up to everyone.]
For Hakkai
Y'seem like there's things ya'd like t' ask 'a me, son.

Chikusa/Ken, Either!
An echo of silence. ]
.....
[ Cerberus draws closer to his god and Zero places his hand on the large neck of the hellhound as the two listen to the unending howls that fill the clearing one after the other. The sound is filled with loss that's become so familiar to him since taking up the duties of his titular god. Hades was a god people only ever came to in times of grief.
Zero listens to another empty howl and his eyes draw up to his companion, a question in his gaze. Cerberus stares back at him. Reading his intention, the Hellhound raises its enormous muzzle and lets out an answering howl that pierces the sky. ]
no subject
So, at the addition of Cerberus' voice, his howl changes from meaningless screams of grief into something with a relatively intelligible canine message. It's not a complex message, but then it doesn't have to be.
Cerberus should be able to gather, from the change in Ken's howls, that someone or something close to Ken is gone. The kind of gone that doesn't come back. What Cerberus does with this information is anyone's guess.]
no subject
no subject
Ken himself either doesn't register their presence, or he doesn't care. The howling continues, although by now the meaning has bled out of it again.]
