20 | Shopping Frenzy!
Who: Everyone!
What: Helping a grand opening go well
When: August 21
Where: The Near Shore
Summary: The owners and employees at a new shopping center are begging for help. Bad luck has plagued them, and their grand opening is this weekend! Gods and shinki alike have been asked to respond to their prayers on Opening Day, find the source of their misfortune and ensure that the opening goes smoothly.

The Yamada Corporation is opening a new, high-class department store in a Tokyo suburb. They've been running advertisements for weeks and excitement among their prospective customers is at a fever pitch. Unfortunately, things inside the project aren't going so well. Construction has been delayed, deliveries are wrong, employees keep getting sick or hurt on the job and it's starting to look like the grand opening will be a grand disaster. Their fervent prayers for help have reached the Heavens, who are passing them along to you to be granted... but with an addition: Heaven, too, is very interested in learning where that bad luck is coming from.

Maintenance Madness
- For a brand-new building, Yamada Department Store is having a lot of maintenance issues. Toilets are overflowing, lights are burning out, stair railings are coming loose, and either the air conditioning is set so cold there's frost on the vents or it's not working at all. The overworked maintenance crew needs all the help they can get! How many gods does it take to change a light bulb?
Secret Shoppers
- Are you really going undercover to make sure you stop problems before they start, or just enjoying a day of high-class shopping on Heaven's dime? Whatever your real motivation is, all expenses are covered... but you'll still want to keep an eye out for mishaps. Unfortunately, the grocery and bakery in the basement are under construction (they've had some flooding problems) but there are still six floors of designer clothes, consumer goods and restaurants to enjoy.
Retail Rescue
- Between mysterious accidents and that nasty flu that seems to be going around, the department store is badly understaffed. Grab an employee uniform and someone else's nametag and pitch in before the lines get too long. There are positions open in every department, from the restaurant on the top floor to book sales on floor one.
It's not just sales and service you have to worry about: thanks to the store's misfortune, displays are toppling over, the wrong orders are coming in, fancy candies are melting all over the shelves and ink tags are exploding on their own. This is hard work!
Intrepid Investigators
- The Heavens aren't just sending so much supernatural help to this department store to keep their faithful followers happy. They have reason to suspect that there's something more sinister behind this mysterious streak of extra-bad luck. Between keeping the lights on and the customers happy,
you've been asked to search the store and investigate all of the "unlucky" incidents in order to determine what's going on. The shinki who brought you this request hinted that Heaven would look favorably on anyone who uncovered something particularly useful....
If your character is investigating the department store and needs to know what they have found, please comment to the "Investigations" thread below with a link to your thread. Your hint will be provided.
Investigation threads longer than 10 comments will earn 200 followers for every god in the thread and 20 exp for every shinki. Once your thread reaches that length, please turn it in by replying to your hint under the "Investigations" thread to let us know you've earned the bonus.

In Summary:
- Keep the lights on
- Take some time out to enjoy a shopping trip
- Make sure the customers are happy
- Discover the cause of the bad luck
- Have fun~
Secret Shoppers
Ah-!! I'm-
[Kairi spins to face the young man.]
I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention.
[She looks a little sheepish.]
I haven't been out a lot lately...

[She smiles back and offers a hand to shake.]
My name is Kairi. I'm a shinki.
no subject
[He sounds quite cheerful over having such an eyebrow-raising dominion.]
Nice to meet you.
no subject
[Possibly none of those things. After all, Deku has nothing to do with Izuku so far as she knows.]
no subject
no subject
[She almost said Artemis. Again.]
Neith. Her real name is Hajime. Have you met her at all, Komaeda?
no subject
no subject
[She imagines that maybe Komaeda and Davesprite are friends, but Kairi always assumes positive intentions from people.]
no subject
He's a remarkably kind person. He even worried about a worthless being like myself.
no subject
[A little surprising to her because she doesn't know him that well, but it makes sense to hear a story like that, and yet--]
But you're not worthless! No one is. If someone said that to you, that's just terrible!
[She's never felt so angry at the thought of what someone else said before!]
no subject
It's impossible for everyone to have value, after all. The only way a concept like value can exist is if there are also things that have no value at all. It's like having one without zero! So for some people to have worth...worthless people like me also have to exist.
no subject
I'm not sure what sort of life you've lived to make you feel that way, but I can only say that I don't feel the same.
[She puts her hand over her heart.]
Especially for a shinki, they may have talent or skill that they just can't remember. And even for a god, I would think that a person brings something to the world.
[Then she folds her hands in front of her skirt.]
So if nothing else, you have worth to me. That's all.
[And she smiles then, too.]
This is such a clash of values
Still, though - shouldn't you get to know someone before you decide what they're worth? I could be a mass murderer, after all...would you still think I had worth then? Wouldn't that sort of person be worth less than if they'd never existed at all?
It really is, and kinda great
Well...
[She fidgets a bit, unable to voice all of that as she was sworn to secrecy. Time to get vague.]
It's hard to explain, but I guess I have a hard time believing there's anyone out there without a spark of anything good in them.
N-not that being a a mass... not that that would be a good thing! But sometimes... people change for the better.
[Or so she can hope. She knows Hakkai as the person who founded a school for shinki, not as the person who confessed all of those things to the three shinki who helped him out.]

no subject
Excuse it? No, I don't think that's the right word.
[She's at least choosing her words very carefully.]
I want to believe that the point at which someone has enough of a conscience to feel bad about that kind of thing... they might try for the rest of their life to put some good back into it after they took so much out of it.
I am so sorry, he needs to stop but insane creepy rambling is kind of his thing
I mean, she got captured by Org XIII, she's got this
No, you're right, they probably wouldn't know what doing good things would look or feel like on their own. I think that's why we need to be kind even to them - to show them an option they hadn't considered before. I think the right people will be curious enough about what 'atonement' - to put it that way - looks like that they'll start trying to do better on their own, with help and guidance and friendship to encourage them to make better decisions.
No one's perfect. A killer may be as cold-hearted as you say. But I also don't know what's in people's hearts. Maybe someone who killed just once was doing it in defense of another. We can't know that kind of thing. But a choice, a second chance to prove they aren't defined by one moment... yes, I think everyone deserves that.
no subject
But I suppose I come from a very different world than you. In the world I come from, someone set the ultimate bad example, and she was so influential that the whole world followed her down into despair...so I think people are much more likely to be influenced by bad examples than good ones.
no subject
I can't tell you exactly what happened in my world. I only know that there are people who take in a lot of the feelings around them - if they see overwhelming looming despair, they may be the type who're going to follow them into despair. But in that same moment, if there's another person who can be that hope in a sea of despair... they may follow that person too. Why do people do bad things in the first place? You're right, I'm sure that there are people who just don't want to do good things. I just think that some people also don't do good things because they think they don't have a choice.
Those kinds of people would benefit from a good example - and a friend to guide them through a similar journey. [Here she smiles again.] After all, that's ultimately what we can agree on, right? If anyone ever did decide to change - for any reason at all - I know it wouldn't be easy. And if they've done those bad things, they may not have the kinds of friends willing to support them through a change. The kind of people able to be hopeful in the face of despair... those are the kinds of friends they'd need.
no subject
I think we just disagree on what kind of influences people fall to most easily...in my experience, despair is like giving in to gravity. Anyone can fall into despair. Hope...hope is more like flying. You're fighting against natural forces, against what would be the easiest thing to do. Your efforts might certainly inspire others, but it'll never spread as easily because it's much harder for other people to do. It's a sad truth, but a hundred people could probably fall to despair in the time it takes to inspire a single person to hope. [Then he smiles, spreading his arms.] But don't you see? It has to be that way! The very act of hoping, of trying to spread hope, is full of despair! Despair that you have to overcome with your own hope!
no subject
Out of the corner of her eye, she glances for the exit to the room, suddenly uncomfortable with the idea that Komaeda may have a point.]
I think you're right about where we seem to disagree. I'll have to think about what you've said some more on my own, if that's okay.
[But she gives him a smile as she starts to back up toward the door.]
I hope you have a great rest of your day, Komaeda.
no subject
[He gives her a smile and a friendly wave. His...intensity from when he was talking about hope and despair seems to have cooled off.] Have a nice day, Kairi!
