Summary: The owners and employees at a new shopping center are begging for help. Bad luck has plagued them, and their grand opening is this weekend! Gods and shinki alike have been asked to respond to their prayers on Opening Day, find the source of their misfortune and ensure that the opening goes smoothly.



The Yamada Corporation is opening a new, high-class department store in a Tokyo suburb. They've been running advertisements for weeks and excitement among their prospective customers is at a fever pitch. Unfortunately, things inside the project aren't going so well. Construction has been delayed, deliveries are wrong, employees keep getting sick or hurt on the job and it's starting to look like the grand opening will be a grand disaster. Their fervent prayers for help have reached the Heavens, who are passing them along to you to be granted... but with an addition: Heaven, too, is very interested in learning where that bad luck is coming from.



Maintenance Madness

For a brand-new building, Yamada Department Store is having a lot of maintenance issues. Toilets are overflowing, lights are burning out, stair railings are coming loose, and either the air conditioning is set so cold there's frost on the vents or it's not working at all. The overworked maintenance crew needs all the help they can get! How many gods does it take to change a light bulb?

Secret Shoppers

Are you really going undercover to make sure you stop problems before they start, or just enjoying a day of high-class shopping on Heaven's dime? Whatever your real motivation is, all expenses are covered... but you'll still want to keep an eye out for mishaps. Unfortunately, the grocery and bakery in the basement are under construction (they've had some flooding problems) but there are still six floors of designer clothes, consumer goods and restaurants to enjoy.

Retail Rescue

Between mysterious accidents and that nasty flu that seems to be going around, the department store is badly understaffed. Grab an employee uniform and someone else's nametag and pitch in before the lines get too long. There are positions open in every department, from the restaurant on the top floor to book sales on floor one.

It's not just sales and service you have to worry about: thanks to the store's misfortune, displays are toppling over, the wrong orders are coming in, fancy candies are melting all over the shelves and ink tags are exploding on their own. This is hard work!

Intrepid Investigators

The Heavens aren't just sending so much supernatural help to this department store to keep their faithful followers happy. They have reason to suspect that there's something more sinister behind this mysterious streak of extra-bad luck. Between keeping the lights on and the customers happy,
you've been asked to search the store and investigate all of the "unlucky" incidents in order to determine what's going on. The shinki who brought you this request hinted that Heaven would look favorably on anyone who uncovered something particularly useful....

[Kairi moves the headrest part forward and backwards on her head, trying to feel where it's most comfortable, then listens for when he starts turning the knob.]

Oh... oh it's almost like being in a small room with a loud sound going. Is it supposed to do that?

[There's a noise-cancellation setting she's got turned on, so that plus the full-ear covering makes the sensation happen. She lifts one of the headphones off to better hear his response.]

[Davesprite turns it down a little once she remarks on that, tipping his hand a bit.] It depends on your preference, but yeah, if you're talking small room like one you can't hear any other sounds in, that's usually a good thing. You don't want other sounds in fucking with your main one.

[And effective full-coverage ones can help calm things down a bit if you're performing, too, so there's that.]

Oh wow, that's better - and it sounds really good. I can hear it clearly without any buzzing.

[She bounces back and forth as the song shifts to a more upbeat, dancey one. Then she looks over at Davesprite.]

What else... maybe how long the cord is, or no cord at all?

[Kairi can't remember the word 'bluetooth' just now, only that the cordless kind was what she picked for Dust.]

Yeah, that's the kind of quality you want. The cheap shit ranges get interference really easily. {Whether it's from a bad quality connection or just bad quality speakers.

As soon as she mentions cords, though, Davesprite waves a hand.] Studio headphones don't come cordless. It's harder to get perfect sound reproduction without a wire.

[Kairi has the Today I Learned face on her as she nods. She'd never considered that before.]

Oh! You really know a lot about these.

[She's very impressed.]

Do you know many other people so into music?

Yeah, I mean, I'm assuming they knew what they were doing when they dropped a set of turntables in my lap like I should know what I was doing with them. [Which he did, but that's beside the point. As for that question, he kind of has to offer her a flat look there.]

I'm pretty sure most of the other people that into music here are living it up in the land of talent agency slapfights, and the only person there I've really had anything to do with is Barry.

[ They hadn't talked much about music specifically, but if Davesprite says so, then she has no reason to doubt that's an interest of his she just hadn't hit on yet.]

Turntables are...

[Kairi puts both hands in front of her and mocks a back-and-forth with both them.]

Those things? I've never seen one before today, but I think I saw a picture on a box in here.

Yeah. He's not a bad dude, but fuck all that talent agency shit. [Davesprite's having none of those shenanigans today, especially since the leader of the side opposing Barry's seems to have her head so far up her own ass he's not sure she'd even recognise rap as a genre.

At least Kairi seems to have the gist of what he means there, and he nods.] Those things. I've been filling out my DJ station with other equipment since, but the turntables just kinda showed up like things do sometimes.

You have a DJ station?

[She feels kind of guilty, either not remembering that she'd heard that before or not paying enough attention until now.]

Can I listen on my phone? What else can I help you look for?

[She's super impressed.]

I mean, it's basically just the turntables with the other requisite shit like a soundboard and fader and whatever else added, but yeah. [Then again, it's not like a DJ station isn't normally just that stuff anyway. Electronic music is a little less frustrating to carry around a full band with than acoustic.

Davesprite draws back a bit at her sudden enthusiasm, as if it's a little unexpected, but eventually shrugs.] Sure, I can send you some of the tracks I've been fucking around with if you want. And I do kinda need a decent set of speakers.

[She flinches a bit at the f-bomb, per usual for her, but she tries not to let it get to her. He's opening up about his interests and that's ultimately what she was after, trying to learn more about him in a more natural way than playing 20 questions.]

Okay... a set of speakers! Those are something I know about. Uhm... do you mean like the kind that can fit on a table, or as big as a dresser?

[That's the best size reference she can come up with, only having a vague notion of club- and concert-sized speakers that are as big as she is.]

[Davesprite raises a brow a bit at the flinch, but though he feels a bit bad, it's not nearly enough to make him stop swearing. It's not as if he was swearing at her, and swearing next to people is less of an issue to him.]

They're not gonna sell the dresser-sized ones here, not a big enough market for them. I do probably need floor speakers, though.

[Table ones aren't really going to cut it for what he needs them for, and table ones are also rarely that high quality.]
