23 - Crazy Cat Shuffle

Summary: The new Crazy Cat mascot keychains are sparking real passion in Tokyo's hot spots. Brawls have broken out over the extra-rare versions, and all of this angst is attracting ayakashi. The gods have been asked to step in before things get out of control.







Crossing Crisis

The Shibuya scramble crossing is always busy, but it's especially wild today. Ten new Crazy Cat vending machines have been installed at the mouth of the alley across from Shibuya Station's exit. Rumors are flying that these machines have extra Blue-Star Cats in them: the very rarest kind! A crowd of hundreds of excited fans have gathered, but the people at the front of the lines are buying lots of cats, and the mood is starting to grow sour as the people at the back of the lines begin to wonder if there will be any left by the time it's their turn.

This crowd needs crossing guards... or just someone who can snag some of those ultra-rare Cats and sell them to the back of the line for crazy cash. Everything a god does is righteous, after all.

Sunshine Struggle

Crazy Cat machines dot the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro. The machines here are attracting some particularly nasty ayakashi: jealous little purple creatures with too many legs that stoke buyers' envy and need for more and better collectibles. Under their influence, it's not just the Cats going fast. The local stores are selling out of everything cute on the shelves.

Worse, some of the ayakashi victims are turning to theft when they run out of pocket money. Time to exterminate those bugs before they start a new crime wave.

Taking Stock

Accident? Sabotage? No one's telling, but a delivery truck carrying boxes of new keychains to restock the machines blew a tire and overturned on a major street. Under the influence of those greedy little ayakashi, collectors are descending on the wreck to snag their favorites before the police show up.

The dazed driver doesn't know what to do, the crowd is starting to get violent, and those Cats do look amazingly cute. And appealing. And, for that matter, valuable.

Bad Kitty

The cat keychains are super cute! Even gods or shinki might be tempted to buy one and take it home, but taking these keychains back to the Far Shore will give away their hidden secret. It's not just human envy that's attracting ayakashi to the Crazy Cats. There are ayakashi hiding inside this batch of cute kitty dolls, and bringing them through a shrine to the Far Shore will force the hidden creatures out of their plushie prisons.

They're big, they're mad, and they're hungry. And the Heavens are full of souls that smell delicious.

The ayakashi escaping from Crazy Cat dolls on the Far Shore resemble gigantic (taller than a person at the shoulder) versions of the cute plushie cats, with very real and sharp teeth and claws. They run and attack at random once released from the dolls, so even gods and shinki who did not bring the toys back could be faced with a fight. The patrolling shinki will do their best to hold them back with borderlines, but they need help to rend these crazy cats before they do too much damage!

[ What Hibiki sees, she keeps to herself. But her breathing returns to normal. So does her posture. She closes her eyes, pauses: she's calm. It's such a good feeling, to be calm. This is how she should always be.

Then she tips her head down. ] There's something to that argument.

[ So much something, that as it solidifies and she starts calculating the sort of present she could give her fans - for what are followers, after all, but a god's fans? - that would wipe sentence enders clear out of their heads, she adopts the idea as something worthy of her having thought of it.

A thought conceived to assist Shikyoin Hibiki is essentially near the same level as a thought conceived by Shikyoin Hibiki, when all's said and done. ]

[He's lifting a hand to his mouth hiding his smirk and fighting back the urge to chuckle at her.]

I have been known to make a good point or two. Now I hope you understand why these vexing little cats are rather pointless I trust?

[And he's adding to reinforce the idea he's given her.]

Especially, given the amazing things you're certainly more than capable of.

[Nailed it. He's reaching up to adjust his bolo tie loosening it slightly.]

What will you do with all of these now?

The other gods and shinki can have them.

[ For their lesser followers. Hibiki waves a hand at the bag. ] Do with them as you wish.

[ Now, dispose of them silently. For a genius is at work.

Determining how best to use her talents, including possibly even her new heightened ability to pull anything she wants at any game of chance, to provide her followers with the ultimate experience. ]

Very well.

[Yes, good he's proud of you, Hibiki. Not that he'll tell you out loud.

Bag in hand he's hopping up and moving toward an assembled crowd of children near the end of the line. He's happily handing out the toys until he not longer has any of the cats - even the other cats he'd had are handed out.]

[ These kids are all so happy! They...don't really see where that mister went, to point him out to Mom or Dad, but the important thing is that they have one of these awesome cats! A bunch of them break off from the line to crouch in a circle and play with their keychains. Meow. Meow, meow.

Hibiki takes out a large pair of headphones and puts them on to continue to think. ]

[Alan is just happy and content to make children happy. It's very much to his liking - it was always something he tried to do in little ways. He doesn't linger though at least not near at hand.]

Cute little kittens.

[He muses to himself as he rejoins Hibiki. He's not talking to her exactly. Seeing this he can kind of see the appeal of these silly cat toys. For children perhaps not the greedy adults but certainly the little ones.]

[ "Meow, meow! Meow meow meow!"

"Nyaa!"

Hibiki closes her eyes. Hibiki inclines her head. Hibiki smirks.

Hibiki has had An Idea. ]

Hm.

[ One can practically hear the single twinkle of a lone, satisfied sparkle. ]

[Poor Alan he's beside himself with the cuteness.

Gently, he's touching Hibiki's shoulder before moving to excuse himself. Surely he isn't needed anymore now that Hibiki's mad quest has been stopped.]

[ Considering that Hibiki is now taking a moment to bask in her own brilliance, that's probably an astute assumption.

Unless he notices a lone cat keychain falling out of the leftovers and rolling back towards Hibiki, but it's doing so in such an unobtrusive way that may, indeed, go unmarked. ]
