23 - Crazy Cat Shuffle

Summary: The new Crazy Cat mascot keychains are sparking real passion in Tokyo's hot spots. Brawls have broken out over the extra-rare versions, and all of this angst is attracting ayakashi. The gods have been asked to step in before things get out of control.







Crossing Crisis

The Shibuya scramble crossing is always busy, but it's especially wild today. Ten new Crazy Cat vending machines have been installed at the mouth of the alley across from Shibuya Station's exit. Rumors are flying that these machines have extra Blue-Star Cats in them: the very rarest kind! A crowd of hundreds of excited fans have gathered, but the people at the front of the lines are buying lots of cats, and the mood is starting to grow sour as the people at the back of the lines begin to wonder if there will be any left by the time it's their turn.

This crowd needs crossing guards... or just someone who can snag some of those ultra-rare Cats and sell them to the back of the line for crazy cash. Everything a god does is righteous, after all.

Sunshine Struggle

Crazy Cat machines dot the Sunshine City complex in Ikebukuro. The machines here are attracting some particularly nasty ayakashi: jealous little purple creatures with too many legs that stoke buyers' envy and need for more and better collectibles. Under their influence, it's not just the Cats going fast. The local stores are selling out of everything cute on the shelves.

Worse, some of the ayakashi victims are turning to theft when they run out of pocket money. Time to exterminate those bugs before they start a new crime wave.

Taking Stock

Accident? Sabotage? No one's telling, but a delivery truck carrying boxes of new keychains to restock the machines blew a tire and overturned on a major street. Under the influence of those greedy little ayakashi, collectors are descending on the wreck to snag their favorites before the police show up.

The dazed driver doesn't know what to do, the crowd is starting to get violent, and those Cats do look amazingly cute. And appealing. And, for that matter, valuable.

Bad Kitty

The cat keychains are super cute! Even gods or shinki might be tempted to buy one and take it home, but taking these keychains back to the Far Shore will give away their hidden secret. It's not just human envy that's attracting ayakashi to the Crazy Cats. There are ayakashi hiding inside this batch of cute kitty dolls, and bringing them through a shrine to the Far Shore will force the hidden creatures out of their plushie prisons.

They're big, they're mad, and they're hungry. And the Heavens are full of souls that smell delicious.

The ayakashi escaping from Crazy Cat dolls on the Far Shore resemble gigantic (taller than a person at the shoulder) versions of the cute plushie cats, with very real and sharp teeth and claws. They run and attack at random once released from the dolls, so even gods and shinki who did not bring the toys back could be faced with a fight. The patrolling shinki will do their best to hold them back with borderlines, but they need help to rend these crazy cats before they do too much damage!

[So fortunate, so handy... she doesn't mind figuring things out normally, but this is definitely way easier.]

All right then, partner!

[She may still have access to her sword, but the idea of being able to show off what Berserker's capable of doing is incredibly appealing - and the lightning effect positively oozes power. Using that power to rush the ayakashi, sending enough damage their way to give the two of them an opportunity to cast a rending spell, what better set up could she possibly wish for?]

[As odd as this arrangement may be, Berserker actually feels rather comfortable like this. She can't remember anything about being a Servant, but protecting a Master body and soul just feels right to her on an instinctual level. She sends the lightning crackling through Soleil's form, controlling its flow for maximum impact when she strikes. And with a hideous scream, the first of their enemies is shredded in half.]

[That's one down, and however many more to go... still, taking down monstrous enemies like these is easy enough with this sort of power at her disposal, so once the first one goes down, Soleil wastes no time in dashing toward their next target.]

Haha, not bad! Not bad at all!

[She's obviously enjoying this, throwing yourself into the heat of battle like this is plenty familiar, and getting used to what Berserker allows her is interesting, not to mention thrilling.]

[Berserker keeps the lightning coursing, conducting it into the tip of Soleil's blade as she keeps up her assault. She's not very talkative even telepathically while they fight, but Soleil will pick up little proud and satisfied hums every so often.]

[With how little her shinki actually vocalizes normally, having their connection remain a largely unspoken one in this circumstance just feels... comfortable. An easy method of communication is nice, but clearly not essential to being a formidable team.

The gown itself might not be quite as easy to move in as her normal attire, but with the added benefit of the electrical charge Berserker's supplying her with, the ayakashi really don't stand much chance. More practice with the two of them fighting together like this is probably in store for them, but for now, this is working out just fine, and the cats are going down with ease.]

[Even when the gown brushes up against ayakashi, it delivers electrical shocks with enough power to stun them in place until Soleil can turn to deliver the finishing blow. It's definitely a powerful form, but like Berserker herself, it'll take practice to rein its power in and harness it toward useful ends. While they fight, they'll both feel the sensation comparable to an internal battery being drained with each strike. Still, Berserker is content to fight until she literally can't, so as long as Soleil is still standing, she's ready to go.]

[Thankfully for the both of them, Soleil is versed in the art of retreating when there's no other option left, though the number of ayakashi that had been keeping them occupied isn't so large as to exhaust them completely either.

Several of the beasts down, and any remaining ones off pursuing other targets leaving the area around them nice and clear, Soleil pauses to assess the situation and finds herself... far more drained than she anticipated. She's never had to rend that many ayakashi all at once before, and likewise never had the advantage of Berserker's power on her side through such a pursuit.]

I think we've done a pretty great job here, don't you think?

[It's probably clear just how tired she is from all of this, but the smile stays on her face regardless.]

Yes. We're strong together.

[Berserker is pretty tired herself, but her enthusiasm and pride manages to creep into her voice as she projects her thoughts. Still, it's probably time for both of them to recharge a bit.]

[They certainly are strong together, and even just the thought of it seems to perk her up a little more. Still, the both of them are obviously reaching their limit, there's no need to drag the fighting out and risk one or both of them getting seriously hurt.]
