Just a shinki.
Who: Reisi and OPEN!
When: September 16 ~ September 30.
What: VARIOUS!
When: September 16 ~ September 30.
What: VARIOUS!
A) Shinki Training
[When left to his own devices, Reisi doesn't usually train on his own. However, he's been doing more shinki training like practicing and experimenting with borderlines. While he can perform them with natural ease, he recognizes there's potential beyond what he'd learned about them since his arrival. Unlike the blue aura and the Sword, Reisi cannot tap into that potential without first researching and experimenting with it. As such, he may check out Heaven's Library and other similar resources to learn about shinki abilities.
Meanwhile, at Nekhbet's Temple, others have expressed interest in training. Whether it be armed combat, hand-to-hand, or borderlines, Reisi won't go easy on you if you request him as a training/sparring partner.]
B) Hobbies: Tea Ceremony and Puzzles
[If you know Reisi well enough, you may have heard that his hobbies are tea ceremony and jigsaw puzzles. You may also have learned that he's willing to share these experiences not only at home but at other places as well. He has a portable tea ceremony set for performing it at other temples upon request or if given permission to do so. Similarly, he has boxes or bags of jigsaw puzzles to do at home or in other temples if anyone's willing to indulge him.
Want him to try out your hobbies, too? Well, you need but ask—Reisi typically is excited and interested in trying new things provided they don't disrupt peace and society.]
C) September 20: Broken Bonds
[Feeling Suoh's power surging more erratically than usual, Reisi wakes in the early morning even before Suoh's accidental network post. After that, there's no way he could return to sleep because not even he truly has that much control over himself.
He's caught between a rock and a hard place. He shouldn't have pushed Suoh away and cut him off as he had during the Harvest Moon, but it isn't right to defy his own god by becoming the very threat he protects society from. Yet if he hadn't cut himself off from Suoh, he might be able to help the other man bear this even a little bit. Even if there's someone else who could take Suoh on, he's inherently Reisi's responsibility.
That's why he feels the guilt that he does now that Suoh's powers are fluctuating. He feels the growing urge to monitor the other man's condition and respond to the threat he poses to others at this time. The knowledge that he's forbidden to do any such thing is painful, but Reisi stays himself and suppresses his emotions.
As such, he's somewhat distant and despondent for the rest of the day.]

[They haven't so much built up over time as much as they seem to have snowballed into what Reisi is dealing with now. Of course, he believes the main reason has to do with Suoh, but there's really no point in discussing that anymore since neither of them is going to change their stance on the matter.]
Though they're likely related to a past life I know nothing about.
[A beat.]
Fushimi-kun came to speak to me today, though it wasn't for long. I seem to have disappointed him.
[Reisi seems to more frequently elicit that sentiment nowadays.
After another pause, Reisi's lips turn upward into a twisted sneer.]
Ah, but that can't be of much importance, so I wonder what exactly that leaves.
no subject
Having met Fushimi once before, Shun doesn't seem too surprised about the visit, though he notes the mention of disappointment. Reisi's reaction to it is a little odd, though, and Shun's eyes narrow a bit as he observes.]
What makes you say that? [Obviously it's not the core of all this, because it started a while back, but it could always be a contributor.] And if you've observed there's a number of reasons, then that says there are ones that aren't grounded in your past life. What have you seen that's actually here and present?
no subject
Putting on this cruel face about his argument with Fushimi is much easier than thinking about or coping with it. However, it wasn't as if Reisi had actually wanted to deny Fushimi. But without a good reason to unlock the saber, Reisi felt as if he had no choice. It felt like one of the few things Reisi had control over before Fushimi lashed out at him. In fact, Fushimi's words had hit close enough to home that Reisi almost couldn't help lashing out right back... even though he's speaking to his god now, rather than the other shinki.
Still wearing his mocking grin, he averts his gaze by closing his eyes as he continues.]
I say it because he's as lawless and unreasonable as Suoh. Other than his ability to demonstrate some of my power, we have no affiliation with one another. [And Fushimi thinks they share powers? Ha, there's no way that shinki could handle the blue aura to its fullest extent! Reisi lets out a small scoff as he opens his eyes, revealing an icy callous look.] Besides, even if he'd found something and was able to pledge himself to it then and there...
[Fushimi isn't really Reisi's. He has a god, and he has Yata to take care of him as well.
As Reisi trails off, he begins to carefully compose himself before quietly clearing his throat.]
In any case, Fushimi-kun has a saber that's much like mine and the one that belonged to Enomoto-kun before his disappearance. Locked. And it will not be unlocked, I can say as much with certainty.
As for what may not be grounded in my past life, hmm... [He appears contemplative.
Suoh, Kusanagi, Tatara, Yata, Eric, Fushimi, Enomoto... are all from his past. The Swords. His powers. The sabers. Even Reisi's hobbies seem tied to the past.]
At the very least, I should work with increased diligence toward even greater mastery of my shinki abilities.
no subject
And, being how he is, Shun isn't going to step back from pointing that out when the opportunity arises. He does at least let Reisi finish before he does, but the first thing he says is in reference to that initial tirade.]
Wearing a mask to pretend you don't care doesn't work so well when your real face can still be seen through it. [But considering Fushimi is part of his past, it might be better not to push too hard. Just enough to point out that it's unlikely to be some minor thing like he's trying to play it off as.
That answer also just tells Shun that most of what's on Reisi's mind is in relation to things of his world - perhaps his powers and his people, or maybe the role he played. Shun has heard enough about the Kings by this point to think that it might be something that would leave a gaping hole when removed from someone.
He can, at least, follow along with the shinki abilities point for now, and he raises a brow.] They teach spells at that school set up in an abandoned temple. And I've heard ablutions are supposed to be advanced, but that's not something you can just learn on a whim.
no subject
Is that the one run by Cho Hakkai? Chikusa Kakimoto had mentioned something about that some days ago, so I plan on looking into that more.
[He looks and sounds neutral rather than curious, interested, or motivated. It sounds more like something to simply pass the time than anything else. There's no alleviation to the pressure, responsibility, loss, pain, failure, and guilt inside him. Instead, there's a sort of apathy beginning to come over Reisi.]
no subject
Shun isn't going to sit and pretend he's okay with just going along with that, and he rearranges himself so he's leaning forward more to watch the other man.]
So is that it? Do you not care anymore? Or do you just think pretending not to care is going to fix the problem? [He's not letting up this easily.] I'm trying to get you to be honest with me, but I'm not sure you're even being honest with yourself at this point.
no subject
As he continues, his words fly with fury like the flurry of a storm.]
I discarded whatever association I have with Suoh. Despite that, he saved me on that very same night. Regardless of his intention, [Because Reisi knows Suoh wouldn't have come for him, he knows Suoh had his own business with Sutcliffe, even if he doesn't know exactly what that was.] —he interfered with my battle with Sutcliffe and saved me.
Enomoto-kun pledged to use his saber to defend himself, and so I unlocked it for him. However, he disappeared nearly a month after my doing so. Fushimi-kun approached me with his saber but could not give me a reason to unlock it, so we argued, and he stormed away.
Kusanagi has disappeared, and Suoh's powers nearly unleashed the Red Sword.
[Reisi cannot be Suoh's rival, he cannot repair the broken bond between them, and he cannot save Suoh.
No matter how much he cares about these things, there's nothing he can do about them after the fact, and there's especially nothing he can do about the disappearances. He's a shinki and at the mercy of the gods. That he knows of, he's fortunate enough to have landed in Kurosaki's care.
The look on his face is stone cold even after that.]
So, what should I do? What can I do?
no subject
As it is, Shun's satisfied enough with getting an honest answer, and he inclines his head a bit as if he can understand the frustration behind that. His expression betrays no sympathy, but that's merely because he's not sure Reisi would want such a coddling emotion in the mood he's in right now.]
That's not a question I can answer for you. Things like "what to do"...that's purpose. And if someone else dictates your purpose to you, it's not really your purpose in the end. [And he can see why being a shinki would make that seem like the case - there's definitely a narrow area that they're defined in by this place's rules.]
But this is a completely new world. Obviously discarding any attachments you might have isn't going to help, but instead of focusing on finding the purpose you're desperate for in people with familiar traits and associations, there's an entire puzzle of a world here to figure out that you're losing. Can't see the forest for the trees, or whatever it is people say. True, there are some things we'll probably never be able to do something about - the disappearances don't seem to be under any kind of control - but even without knowing all of this, these associations and inklings of a past you can't remember, didn't you have a purpose the very first time you spoke to me? Didn't you demand the same thing out of me? Something like a "clear purpose" shouldn't be shaken to its foundations by what the people around you do.

In other words,] ...I've failed. I've fallen short of that.
[Faced with that reality, there's another crack that seems to run longer than the ones prior to this. Instead of setting it aside as he's done before, he ignores it, and it continues to split and lengthen as he continues.]
I betrayed your trust when I went to the Temple of Ra, and I turned my back on Suoh when he's among my responsibilities. Then Sutcliffe took control of me, and I could not free myself from her grasp.
[Whatever pressure is seeping through the crack, Reisi tries to suppress it because that's what he's supposed to do.]
Protect the people, and maintain peace and order in society. Uphold justice.
[He feels himself breaking, but Kurosaki wants him to confront this, and so he will.]
...I'm in no position to decide how to do those things on my own.
[Perhaps he once was in such a position during his past life, but in the end, it's as he'd said to Tatara.
I cannot and will not become that person again.]
no subject
It's an odd feeling, having Reisi say so straightforwardly that he betrayed Shun's trust. It is what happened, true enough, but the fact that he's isolating turning his back on Mikoto from that...was he planning to do it even before Shun demanded it, or did Shun force his hand?
He's not sure he wants to know the answer to that himself.
But he does want to help if he can, even if he's not sure how much of a position he's in to do so himself. There's a problem he can see quite clearly there, and it's one he's had in the past too, in a different form.]
I've never gotten the impression you trust anyone here enough to walk alongside you and help you decide. Is there anyone?
[Mikoto, his equal, has been put at a distance. Enomoto and Fushimi, his men, have either disappeared or disappointed and rejected him. Maybe the fact that those he once trusted - or would be predisposed to trust, here - are one-by-one abandoning him is part of the core of this.]

Reisi's thoughts go to Tatara, and how he'd asked Tatara to stay by his side even though he's one of Suoh's own. He thinks about how he's tried to connect, and how Tatara had explained certain things but avoided others. It's hard to say whether Tatara's ready for something like that when he, too, sometimes pulls the wool over his own eyes and leaves things to unfold as they will. That's the complete opposite of what Reisi feels that he stands for—order, integrity, stability, and balance.
But then again, he's also fallen short of these ideals. Confronting that thought causes another chip that again Reisi decides to simply push past.
Besides, Tatara... is another indulgence, isn't he? Perhaps not as overtly dangerous and world-threatening as Suoh, but that doesn't change the fact of the matter. It also means that even if Reisi tries to hide that fact, it'll come out sooner or later... provided that Kurosaki doesn't already know.]
... There may be, but I have yet to make completely certain.
[In this case, Reisi won't accept any degree of doubt. It's all or nothing.]

Honestly, he wouldn't have been surprised if Reisi had succumbed to it before this. It's a testament to the man's will and focus that he's been able to live with it for so long, and, Shun suspects, probably due to experience doing so in his previous life. It's not a nice thought, and even if he can't be one of those trusted people, he wants Reisi to be able to have at least one person like that.
So it's a little relieving to hear even that there's someone he's still deciding on. He lets out a long, quiet breath, choosing not to push for an identity at this point when he's already gotten quite far in just getting this much information.]
Then I think you should make sure. It might not be for as long as you, or the same reasons as you, but I know what it feels like to be completely alone and isolated. It's commendable that you've even gone this long before it came visible like this, but nobody deserves to have to live like that.
[Regardless of understanding, or of different attitudes, there should still be people who can be communicated with about those deepest problems. Not having someone like that is asking for trouble of the worst kind, as Shun knows full well from his own experience with it.]
no subject
However, things have become quite muddled since Reisi's arrival at the Far Shore. New gods and shinki come and go without warning, and may return as having swapped into the other position. Gods have the upper hand with access to their memories and experiences from their past lives and capability to name shinki even if they need shinki in order to rend ayakashi. Otherwise, distinctions between the two are rather blurred, and gods like Kurosaki wish to do away with them altogether.
Like Kurosaki, Suoh and Tatara are gods here at the Far Shore. As far as Reisi knows, Tatara is one of Suoh's men. Despite that, Reisi's asked him to stay by his side, further complicating what Reisi views as a system in disarray.
Here and now, even if Kurosaki hadn't advised it, Reisi probably would be trying to make certain of Tatara anyway. Because looking on everything now, he sees himself running out of both options and hope.]
I understand.
[After a pause,] You have my apologies for being unable to fully reconcile the matter at this point in time.
no subject
[He'll have to keep somewhat of an eye on whether Reisi makes progress on it, because in the state he's currently in, he's not fully reassured he will. Checking up on him is probably a bit much, but he'd prefer to have some idea of how it's going other than the emotional results he can feel from it.
After a few moments, he leans back, a thoughtful look still on his face. When he speaks, though, it's still very blunt and typical of him rather than like some kind of deep thinking.]
You're hard to read. But like I said, I've never felt like you're a person who opens up easily. I certainly don't think you trust me, or that you're going to anytime soon. But there are people here from all kinds of worlds. So I'd think you have a higher chance of finding people you can trust and who you think have a chance of understanding you somewhere like here than anywhere else.
[Shun's own dimensional travel even before all this bore those results for him, and that was from a far narrower pool of worlds. But he doesn't like the idea of either of the Kings isolating themselves based on the notion of lacking understanding.]
