March Training

Who: Everyone
What: Information and Training
When: October 25th
Where: Outside the Meeting Hall, the Far Shore
Summary: Training and informational sessions for newly arrived gods and shinki

Gods and shinki arriving at heaven's meeting hall are, should they allow it, guided to the Meeting Hall, where a traditionally styled dojo and training ground have been made available for the day. The gods and shinki are free to take their time during this day to learn about the details of their new life from Amaterasu's shinki or from the many veteran new god and shinki volunteers.

God Training

    Newly arrived gods are escorted into what looks like an old, large warehouse behind the Meeting Hall for an informational meeting covering the basics of proper god behavior. Several chairs have been moved in, but they're squeezed together between packed shelves and boxes of old ritual clothing, scrolls and rusty or chipped household goods. A minor deity is giving the speech, and none of the white-robed shinki enter. They are encouraged to discuss the information with each other and ask questions of more experienced gods, as well as instructed to guide their new shinki appropriately.

Shinki Training

    Various shinki in the white-and-gold of Amaterasu's hosuehold are stationed around the dojo, passing out helpful informational pamphlets. They will be happy to instruct the newcomers in the use of the borderline as well as offering an explanation of what is expected of a shinki and the importance of teamwork with other shinki and with gods. Shinki are encouraged to work together to practice what they've learned and discuss their perspectives.

    Back copies of the "From Ama" magazine, including puff pieces about new or rising gods or successful shinki, advice columns for resolving problems between gods and shinki, temple photographs and other articles of interest to gods and shinki, have been brought out in boxes and piled up next to a table holding a few remaining copies of the shinki questionnaire for any new shinki who want to keep one around until they can answer the included questions.

      What is your name?

      What is your god's name?

      How do you see your duties as a shinki?

      What is your favorite part of life with your god?

      What is your least favorite part of life with your god?

      What advice would you like to give your god?

      Do you wish to be assigned to a different god? []Y []N

Physical Training

    The dojo is stocked with a wide variety of practice weapons, traditional and modern, to offer some practice opportunity to gods who, for example, find themselves with a sword shinki but are at risk of cutting off their own toes. It's also useful for veteran new gods wishing to train with their current partner shinki. Several magically animated straw-stuffed training dummies, many of which have been carefully mended and patched with neat black stitching, are set up on the lawn with a white-robed shinki hovering nearby to watch over them. They make good training partners, although anyone who comes too close risks being targeted for a sparring match whether they wanted one or not.

    The white-robed shinki are still busy cleaning and preparing the Meeting Hall for the big annual meeting of the gods. They'll recruit anyone who looks as though they're not too busy in order to help scrub floors, weed, sweep paths and walkways, and shoo away any unwelcome little spirits that are hiding away in dark corners of the hall. Heavy lifting is good exercise... right?

Rest and Refreshments

    There are casks of fresh, cold water near the dojo to make sure no one gets dehydrated, but for those who've finished working, hot tea and enough seasonal treats are available to make it look as though the Heavens bought out an entire sweet shop. They're being distributed by a few shinki in indigo-blue and plain brown robes with the sleeves tied back, who aren't above teasing the newcomers a bit.

    Young shinki are playing in the nicely manicured garden, trying to catch crayfish at the lake edge, dashing around playing tag and hide-and-seek. Just be careful you don't get caught in the middle of a game of "Kagome"! If you do, you'll really be stuck until you guess someone's name.

In Summary:
  • Get all the information you can handle
  • Veteran new gods and shinki are welcome to volunteer showing the ropes
  • Get in some training
  • Enjoy a traditional tea
  • Spectate if you want
  • Have fun~

[Her movements with her knife are precise, efficient, working as deftly as if the tool was an extension of her fingers. She pays attention as she cuts, but at times she watches the birds, blade stopping precisely where it needs to be without cutting into. The memories are gone, but the muscle memory remains.

She wipes off her knife on the knee of her pants and rests it on her thigh.]

Do you always feel hungry?

[It's something she's noticed over the last few days; no matter how much she eats, there's always a bit of hunger gnawing at her.]
revolutionfalcon: (calm command)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-21 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
[That's about what Shun was expecting based on how she handled it that first time, though he still keeps an eye on it between using his own. From the ease with which his cuts, it's clearly meticulously sharp despite its relatively small size, just the same as it had been with the flowers - he hones it about as often as possible without damaging it.

When she starts signing, he looks up again to read them before shaking his head a little.]

I don't, but I've heard it's a problem for shinki. I don't know if it's to do with being one or something else about being spirits.

[Presumably there'd be some gods with the same problem if it was just based on them being dead.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Attentive)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-22 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Sounds like another raw deal for the shinki. At least it's only a gnawing hunger and not anything more like a feeling of constant starvation. Does it vary between shinki? On the flipside, never feeling full also means she never feels like she overeats either. Perhaps a blessing considering she's a big eater and food tastes delicious.

She doles out a few more small pieces of pears to the birds, spreading them on both sides to make sure there's a fair spread of food.]

Want some sweets? I'm saving some for later, but if you want one I'm willing to share.
revolutionfalcon: (explanation)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Shun immediately raises a hand in an obvious rebuff to the offer.] I barely eat sweets anyway, but I don't eat while I'm training.

[He might take a box of the sweets to put in his temple for his shinki, but he likely won't have much to do with it himself unless someone decides he really needs to try some particular sweet. And most of the people who try that nowadays at least have some idea of what he can handle.]

Why the hell are there so many of them, anyway? They keep setting up distractions instead of focusing on what these gatherings are for. [Shun only sounds faintly irritated by it as he throws some more fruit to the birds - honestly, he seems more confused, even if both emotions aren't that strong.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Uncertain 2)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-23 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Suit yourself. Ginia glances from his knife to the birds as she opens up the topmost box. Four colorful lumps of mochi sit in little wrappers, two of them with decorations to make it look like a rabbit. How cute. She bites one rabbit mochi in half in a single bite, chewing the sticky sweet furiously.]

You've seen more of these than I have, but I think it's fine. The distractions.

[She looks off at a group of white-and-gold garbed shinki. They're all young children, the oldest no more than eleven, twelve, the youngest maybe four or five. But they're laughing and playing as they chase each other, practicing their borderlines. Ginia lightly tosses the half-eaten piece of mochi in the air, easily catching it and tossing it into her mouth.]

Maybe I've had mochi before. Maybe I haven't. But I know I've had it now and I know I want more. Let me have this memory when I don't have anything else. Let me have the distractions before I go back to my usual day to day.

[It's the most she's said in one go and even Ginia seems a bit surprised as her words settle in her lap, quickly busying her hands by cutting more pear pieces for the birds.]
revolutionfalcon: (decisive)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-23 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shun doesn't quite seem surprised at the "outburst" of sorts, though he does observe Ginia for a few moments after she finishes signing and goes back to cutting up fruit. In the end, he just shrugs slightly, as if it doesn't matter much to him.]

I don't see why it can't be done another time. But they're not going to change things just because one person doesn't like it anyway, so I doubt you have anything to worry about if you prefer it this way.

[There's a certain detachment to his tone, as if the topic isn't a particularly important one to him one way or the other - it's annoying and he doesn't really get it, but it's not one he's going to sit and argue in circles with someone about either.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Attentive)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-25 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about what I prefer, or you prefer, it's what best serves the greater community. I'm not saying this is best, but it's not bad.

[But no, there's no point in arguing this because it will only go in circles and they both have better things to do than that. Ginia scatters a few more pear pieces for the birds before starting on the second piece of mochi.]

This meeting coming up, do you have any idea what it's about? Specifics, rather.

[Besides a gathering of gods and it's very important everything is perfect. That was the most she could get out of Amaterasu's shinki before cleaning supplies were shoved into her hands. And who knows, maybe gods got more about the upcoming meeting since it was mostly about... well, them.]
revolutionfalcon: (about time)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-26 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it does the opposite of what this all was supposed to be in the first place. [Shun isn't going to actually argue it, but as one of the people who originally suggested these training meets to the old gods, he does have a few opinions on what they were and weren't supposed to be. The perception of uncaring frivolity from the Heavens had been a big concern then, so this, he feels, is counterproductive.

At her question, he shakes his head a little, brow furrowing slightly.]
They haven't given us any information. The last time they held a meeting was back in May, and it was the new gods only, because they hadn't given us full information on something important. So I have no idea what this is supposed to be.
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Curious)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-28 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
What didn't they tell you before hand? If it's shareable information.

[But nothing on this meeting. That's a shame. Ginia isn't surprised shinki are kept in the dark, but the gods too? Strange.]

Know where's a good place to go shopping? I've heard some of the shinki hint everyone should dress their best? And...

[She trails off as she gestures at herself, still in basically the same outfit as when she arrived. Jeans, t-shirt, and a nice leather jacket may work for some occasions, but definitely not a formal one.]
revolutionfalcon: (explanation)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-28 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Shun considers how much to say on that one - but then, the information is pretty much general knowledge to newcomer shinki anyway, so he relents after a moment.] They hadn't told gods that telling a shinki their past turns them into ayakashi, they'd just said it was dangerous. Some shinki got turned because of their secrecy.

[Shun sounds a little bitter about the whole thing - his best friend had been here as a shinki at that time, and Shun had been determined to find a way around the absence of memories. If that warning had come any later, he could've done the same thing himself.

He shifts to giving her a rather flat, incredulous look at the idea that he'd be useful to ask for where to go shopping, and just shrugs in the end.]

Try Omotesando. Tokyo has plenty of shopping districts, but I don't know much about them, just that that one sells fancy clothes.
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Defensive)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-30 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's one hell of an oversight. Think they remembered something else important and that's why they're calling this meeting?

[Ginia's words are fast, sharp, brows lowered not only for grammer but because of her anger. How dare the old gods put shinki in danger like that, how dare they withhold critical information. And if there is something else they forgot to mention, how many people have already been hurt or killed because of not knowing?

Ginia stews a little more on that as she eats, nodding at the shopping information. He doesn't look like the most fashion forward, but information is information even if the data is scattered across a map.]
revolutionfalcon: (about time)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-30 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shun shakes his head.] This seems different. That one they called abruptly, no preparation or anything, and it was just the newcomers. If this one's being called because of information, it's something they need to tell everyone, not just us.

[Which could mean they've dug up something extra on how everyone's getting here, but it could just mean this is some kind of yearly tradition or something along those lines.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Serious)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-03-31 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know how many gods there are? I realize it's a shifting number due to arrivals and departures, but is there an estimate?

[The realization of having everyone gathered in the same area suddenly seems unwise. Even with all the shinki around, all the borderlines at the ready, the safeguards being set up and tested, there's no telling what could happen.

Or it could be her wary, easily unsettled self fretting over nothing. It's a gut feeling Ginia isn't quite ready to dismiss, but doesn't want to voice either.]
revolutionfalcon: (declaration of intent)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-03-31 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not as far as I know. Just from the number of temples, if we're talking about all the gods in these Heavens, it would have to be in the hundreds.

[At minimum, since it's a little hard to get a good estimate when the districts are divided as they are. Shun's wondering a little about it himself, since it's fairly widely known the newcomers aren't well trusted by the old guard.]

It'll be the first time they've called the old and new gods together on that scale. [There was the reception, but there weren't many old gods there, considering.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Watching 3)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-04-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Gods, plus all their shinki, it'll be a crowded party. Ginia flicks out a few more bits of pear to the birds, eats a piece for herself. It could be a good thing, an olive branch between the old and new.

Or it could be an excuse for a party, who knows.

Ginia looks at his knife and the practiced way he uses it. She mulls a little longer before offering:]

Do you think the event will be secure?
revolutionfalcon: (about time)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-04-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shun's jaw tightens a little at that.] Amaterasu's going to have a lot to answer for if it isn't. They've been increasing their security since that moon viewing incident, and she spent most of the last party insisting her security was fine and getting offended when I said that didn't match what we'd seen of it. I'm hoping she won't let pride get in the way of what's important.

[And what's important is making sure they don't have yet another major gathering marred by an attack or a curse or whatever else it is they've had to deal with so far.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Guarded)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-04-03 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Moon viewing incident?

[It's understandable there are things considered the known past of the area that get casually referenced, it still doesn't make things any less frustrating. So something did happen at some point. Time to put that next to the murders of things to research more.]

This place needs a history book.
revolutionfalcon: (hell if i know)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-04-04 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on it. Another god wrote a list of events a while ago that still gets referenced, but it's months out of date. I'm hoping I'll finish updating it in the next few weeks.

[While Izuku's list is a useful resource overall, to Shun's knowledge, it hasn't been updated since something like May or June, which means it's close to irrelevant for the newest of them who are missing several months of events they still need to find out from other people.]

Moon viewing was early last month. Someone got into the Heavens during a moon viewing and spread a spell that enhanced people's emotions.
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Serious)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-04-12 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's promising. I'll keep an eye out for it.

[It's good to know someone is proactive enough to pick up someone else's work, especially on something so important. That it's also Shun doesn't strike her as a surprise either. She won't pretend to know him well (if at all), but something about the task seems fitting for him.]

I'm glad I missed that. What got in? Ayakashi or something else?
revolutionfalcon: (calm command)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-04-12 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It shouldn't be that much longer, but there was a lot of a gap to fill. [He has his own knowledge and some actual notes on things that have happened to make sure he didn't forget certain details, but it still needs to be condensed and turned into a list of a length that's not going to be wildly impractical or impossible for anyone to go through quickly.

At the question, Shun shrugs slightly.]
A spirit, we think. It was a kid in a mask running around and "tagging" people, and they fell under the influence.
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Attentive)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-04-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[A spirit. Interesting. Ginia's still working on learning the supernatural ins and outs of everything. It's easy enough when things are shinki, ayakashi, and spirits resembling animals.]

Do you know what happened to the spirit after? Do spirits like that often cause trouble?

[Nekomata and sootsprites aside. They don't cause trouble; they are trouble.]
revolutionfalcon: (declaration of intent)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-04-14 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shun shakes his head a little.] Usually it's ayakashi. We had some spirits stirring up trouble around Obon, but even then, it mostly wasn't anything that bad. Some of those ones are still around, because people let them stay. And as far as I know from talking to the patrol shinki, whoever it was hasn't been caught and probably left the Heavens.

[So one wonders exactly what kind of spirit it might have been, to be able to do that in the first place.]
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Observing 2)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-04-25 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Is it fair to say spirits are mild to moderate troublemakers while ayakashi are the real danger?

[If they're still around because people let them stay, it's already far more tolerance toward them than ayakashi. Though not being the physical manifestation of negative energy probably helps.]

Can spirits become shinki?
revolutionfalcon: (about time)

[personal profile] revolutionfalcon 2018-04-25 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the spirits. I'd say it's more that ayakashi can't be benign, while spirits can. But that doesn't mean there aren't dangerous spirits.

[He remembers a few particularly nasty non-ayakashi spirits among the Obon crowd, for one thing. It had been a bit of a mixed bag there between opportunistic spirits and empowered ayakashi, and neither was much better than the other.]

Shinki are supposed to be wandering spirits given a name, but I've never seen it done by a newcomer god that way.
unlucky7: (STATUS :: Watching 3)

[personal profile] unlucky7 2018-05-04 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because we're assigned to a god at the start?

[Spirits, shinki, ayakashi, Ginia tents her fingers together and stares at the angles. Ayakashi are formed from negative emotions, but a shinki can turn into one too. How many of the larger ayakashi in the Near Shore used to be shinki? How many of the wandering spirits are waiting for a god?]

Can you clear something else up for me? Soulless shinki. Lack of a soul aside, does anything else set them apart from other shinki? How are they made?
