[OPEN] this was never going to end well
Who: Piccolo and OPEN
When: October 27-29
Where: The Far Shore (Gohan's temple), and briefly the Near Shore (some random store)
What: Someone has managed to find himself with a tagalong after his awkward stint at the cat adoption. Now he has to figure out what to do with it...
Note: Action brackets or prose both welcome despite starting prompt format. There shouldn't be any warnings other than grumpy shinki trying not to be a softie at heart. Oh, and brief incident with a dino.
I. October 27th, The Far Shore
Somehow at the end of the day Piccolo made it back to the Far Shore not quite alone. He was still at a loss as to how it happened. As it turned out he wasn't quite invisible to everyone present, especially after having helped in his own awkward manner with a few adoptions. It must have been the last one he had aided. He had come up to argue for the adoption of a feline by a shy boy that had bonded with a quiet cat. The good news was that with his supporting statements the boy got to adopt the cat; the bad news was that he was seen in the process. Worse, he had been unable to remove a white-furred burr clinging to his pants before walking over to help. The worker had immediately cued in on the unfortunate mistake clawing its way up Piccolo's leg with nothing more than a slight wince from the the green shinki as it stubbornly clambered its way up his body and as soon as the boy's adoption was finished she turned on him.
Despite his unusual appearance (or maybe because of it for all he knew, he seemed to get mixed reactions whenever he was noticed here), the worker seemed very enthusiastic dealing with him and before he realized what was happening she had already convinced herself that she had convinced him to adopt a cat. Suddenly unable to get a word in edgewise, Piccolo blinked his way through the worker filling out the necessary paperwork for him and his white burr now all the way up to his chest. As if his luck weren't bad enough for today, it was nearing closing time whenever this took place and soon he was ushered out the door to blessed freedom--only to hear a soft noise come from his scarf. It dawned on him that he had never actually managed to detach his tagalong even though that had been the plan after the worker had forgotten about him.
Well. It was sort of helping by getting rid of the abundance of felines in the area...
Piccolo let it stay nestled in his pauldron's scarf as he headed back to the Far Shore and to Gohan's temple. Along the way an occasional growl was let loose by the green skinned shinki, typically followed by a low voiced command. "Quit that," he would say or something similar to it. At first it may have been hard to spot to whom the shinki was speaking but upon closer inspection one might catch the glimpse of white fur burrowing further into Piccolo's white scarf. The kitten kept kneading into the material around his neck and annoying him though funnily enough the growling was the worst he ever seemed to do with the small fluff.
II. October 27th, Gohan's Temple
When Piccolo finally made it back to the temple he made a beeline for the nearest area he knew some of the dinosaurs typically roamed. Ignoring the herbivores, he easily spotted one of the predators lurking about waiting, he figured, for dinner to make a mistake. He walked up to the dinosaur without hesitation and removed his tiny tagalong from his scarf with a firm yank. He held the ball of white fluff up at eye level and gave his best glare to the feline.
"Look, there's no hard feelings here. It's just I don't actually want you and I figure the dinosaur here could always use a snack before its next meal." There was silence from the small kitten hanging limply from his grasp. "Don't give me that look. Think of it this way: it's for a good cause. You'll be out of everyone's way and feeding another living creature while you're at it."
He was talking to the creature, for the love of all that was, he was actually talking to the tiny animal as if it could understand him and respond in some way. And the worse part was he sounded like he was trying to convince someone that his plan was for the best. He didn't need to convince himself! So why was he still dangling the kitten out in front of him and staring into its tiny little sad eyes.
When it's paw reached out hesitantly Piccolo gulped at the odd sensation filling his stomach. It seemed so helpless and fragile held aloft like that in front of him. Then it had the audacity to swipe its paw at his antennae and the spell was broken. "Why you little...!" Piccolo flinched as it managed to bat his antennae with one of its swipes and even though it was as gentle as the kitten was tiny the sensation of his antennae being touched was still uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, the dinosaur stood staring at the odd pair almost as if in confusion. The dumbfounded gaze turned into gleaming intent though as it realized it was being ignored and it thought the two would make a good meal. Creeping up to the two the dinosaur made a grab for the easiest of the prey, snapping its jaws at the little white kitten hanging helplessly in the green skinned shinki's grasp.
Piccolo was too quick for the dinosaur, however, easily whisking the kitten out of harm's way. He glared at the horse-sized predator. "Hey! I'm not done here! You can wait or go hungry for all I care."
And that was when the frightened mewling began.
Piccolo glanced at the terrified kitten in his hand and again felt that odd sensation somewhere vaguely down in his stomach. Whatever it was it caused him to act on compulsion. He brought the kitten in close to his body and reached out with his opposite hand to arrest the secondary oncoming attack from the dinosaur. It's jaws snapped short as Piccolo held it at bay, hand firmly grasping the top of its head in his powerful grip. The predator looked confused again, unsure how the tide had so easily turned in its prey's favor. With a swift stationary kick, Piccolo sent the dinosaur flying backwards and away from him and the still mewling kitten. Mostly unharmed but suffering from easy defeat, the dinosaur sulked away to hunt another day.
"All right, all right. Enough with the crying already. It's gone, see?" And as if it would actually help calm the small creature down Piccolo turned it slowly so that it could see there was no more predatory dinosaur in sight. The frightened mewling did not stop.
Frustrated, Piccolo stuffed the kitten back into the folds of his scarf and turned to leave to find someone to pawn the tiny creature off on. As he stalked away with a low growl in his throat, Piccolo eventually became aware of a new sound accompanying him. He paused and cocked his head awkwardly to look down at the white feline. It had curled up into a position similar to earlier and the familiarity must have calmed it down. Now it lay there and emitted a soft rumbling noise that Piccolo had a hard time placing.
It was purring, he realized suddenly, and he gulped once helplessly, rooted to the spot as he re-evaluated what he was going to do with the white fluffball. S-surely Gohan or Raichi would take it off his hands? If he could make it to them before the kitten's tiny pinprick claws dug their way into his chest in a metaphorical sense.
III. October 28th, The Near Shore
The next day saw Piccolo grumpily moving through the city streets of some random town in the Near Shore. He had a mission to complete that he was not altogether happy about. A permanent scowl on his face, he eventually made his way into one of the stores lining the streets.
After a short moment to figure out where to head, Piccolo went straight to the section he needed to find what he was looking for. That was the easy part. The hard part was figuring out which brand and type of everything to take. Mostly he was concerned with food for his newly acquired burden.
So he stood in one of the isles, glaring at the various foods meant for felines and grumbling something under his breath. This was definitely going to be more trouble than it was worth in his opinion.
IV. October 29th, Gohan's Temple and Elsewhere in the Far Shore
[A.]
Piccolo tried going about his usual routine on his third day with the kitten. That was his first mistake. As soon as he woke the creature was scampering underneath his feet as if it just wanted him to step on it. Which it clearly did not as it yowled the one time he tripped over it and crushed its tiny tail. He scowled and started to levitate around so as to avoid it as it followed him around. Eventually it tried to "remind" him of its presence with quiet meows that slowly got louder as the morning wore on.
"What?" he finally snapped at the small fluffball. It merowed up at him plaintively and Piccolo frowned uncomprehendingly down at it. He pushed it (gently) away and went back to what he was doing.
Later, he realized what it had wanted when he found the bag of cat food torn up and small treats spilled all over the floor. He groaned with annoyance and yet when he looked over at the satisfied kitten he could do little more than glare half-heartedly at it. He supposed it was his fault (this time) for forgetting that it needed food much more often than he required it. Piccolo made a mental note not to make the same mistake again and cleaned up the mess.
The rest of the day followed suit it seemed as Piccolo failed to keep an eye on his little ward when he left the inside of the temple. That was his second mistake that he soon regretted. It scampered outside with him and quickly got lost. Piccolo didn't even notice until he heard its tiny mewls with his sensitive ears a few minutes later while he was settling into his meditative pose and just getting to it. His brow furrowed and a second later his eyes popped open as he realized the creature had escaped to the outside.
As he scooped up the kitten from a bramble of shrubs it had gotten stuck in he thought, for the umpteenth time since deciding not to feed it to a dinosaur, that this was most definitely not worth the trouble. But when it curled up in his hands and started purring he could only sigh resignedly and go back to what he had been doing.
Again, that was a mistake with the kitten still with him. Despite its initial attempt at a cat-nap the furry fiend's sleep didn't last nearly long enough for Piccolo's mediation session. The green shinki eventually found that its fascination with his antennae was not going away any time soon. The little brat immediately went after his antennae the second it woke, hopping up to his shoulder to get a good swipe at the nearest one. Sputtering in anger, Piccolo grabbed at the kitten with one large hand and held it out in front of his face.
The day was only beginning and it was piling up his mistakes nicely in front of him just to aggravate him. The kitten used its new advantage to try to bat at his antennae again and Piccolo growled as he held the kitten further away from his face in response.
"Stop that! That's not a play toy!"
It would be so easy to squeeze the life out of the cat as it was right now... But he couldn't quite make the action to do so as it stared innocently at his scowling face.
[B.]
Eventually Piccolo grew tired of the cat's presence and he stuffed it back inside the temple proper, attempting to keep it out of harm's way since the dinosaurs would surely make an easy meal of it if it had free rein of the surrounding temple areas outside. He left it there to the sound of its plaintive cries, ignoring them with a cringe as its high-pitched mewling hurt his sensitive ears. But he made it back outside and left the temple grounds altogether, searching out a peaceful place to finish his mediating and perhaps start some other training exercises as well.
He found his way to the park with a little trouble navigating the spacious Far Shore districts on foot. More than once he almost leapt into the air to fly there instead but kept his calm as he wanted to learn the area more thoroughly while he was out and about.
Once he was there Piccolo found a nice, quiet place out of the way underneath a thicker patch of trees to isolate himself from any would-be passerby. Probably not nearly isolated enough for his tastes but it would have to do for the moment. He attempted to mediate for another three hours or so. Then he eventually gave up trying to mediate this close to other people and instead went into some light training exercises. A few easy forms that wouldn't ruin the park or hurt anyone nearby. It was a bit boring for someone like him but he found the challenge in holding back an exercise all of its own.

If Piccolo was ignoring the lanky teenager in the eye searing cyan beanie that was sitting to the side of the path the green shinki was making his way down, well. That clearly wasn't meant to last. Chikusa looked as though he wasn't taking his gaze away from the notebook he had his head ducked down into, but his eyes flicked up to peer from beneath his bangs. Across his lap where the notebook was resting against it, a cat with its tail neatly split blinked up lazily at them.
Chikusa continued to talk. "Cats.... don't listen to anyone."
no subject
"It better learn or it's ending up someone's dinner." It was an idle threat but no one needed to know that just yet.
no subject
Immediately, Chikusa frowns down at it. "No. We're not taking anymore."
no subject
He turned his attention to Chikusa. "You sure?" He didn't do hopeful but getting rid of the cat now would be an immense relief.
no subject
"We have more than half a dozen."
no subject
Piccolo stared at the odd pair as the cat stretched. He made a face of disgust suddenly as if finally deciding how he felt about that idea.
"How do you do it?" That's too many cats in one place.
no subject
"...I guess it helps... that for the most part they can wander off to do their own thing and get their own food..." He watched as the cat slunk down to the floor. "They're more intelligent than normal ones... Probably."
no subject
no subject
Chikusa doesn't really care what it wants to do, however. All he does is shrug in response to the conversation. "Most of them go away during the day... They just stay during the night when it's too cold..." Of course, when it goes back around to summer, it'll probably change, assuming they stay that long. "And they hunt their own food."
no subject
"I guess that's a bit of relief," he responded to Chikusa. "Using more of your own resources to care for them would be taxing. It's bad enough if they're just hanging around being a nuisance."
no subject
"Mmm." It was a quiet agreement. "Although whenever we start to cook, a handful of them insist on watching the process... Their fur is the most annoying part." Which was probably going to cover Piccolo's own cloak, at the rate of things.
