27 - The Gods' Meeting

Who: Everyone!
What: The Meeting of the Gods is here at last.
When: October 30
Where: Heaven's Meeting Hall
Summary:

Pre-Meeting

Guards at the front door are carefully checking each god who enters off on their list of attendees, and taking the names of each of their shinki attendants.

Once the participants are past the doors, they are guided down the hallway to a huge meeting room by one of the guards, who will announce them by divine title, and each of their shinki by whatever name they gave. It's an open question as to who's actually listening, though, because the room is swiftly filling up with gods and shinki. As well as the newcomers, old gods are here, some in human form attended by their uniformed shinki, others in stranger shapes -- giant bears, round-bellied tanuki, turtles, dragons, and more. There's even one tricolored tabby cat in a small blue cap, seated majestically in the arms of a uniformed shinki and chatting with another god.

Buffet tables bearing every kind of food and drink imaginable are set up at one end of the room, and a dais with a podium is at the other, draped in bright gold and white bunting and emblazoned with a chrysanthemum emblem.

Early Announcements

Finally, the socialization comes to an end, and the meeting itself begins as Ookuninushi grabs the microphone and steps up to the podium. The year's most popular gods are named first: Hotei, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, is in third place, Tenjin in second and Ebisu in first place. Each steps up to bow and accept their accolades in turn: Hotei is a big man with a wide smile, Tenjin a tall, ascetic man wearing old robes and concealing his smug expression behind a fan, and a tired-looking younger man in a business suit announces himself as representing Ebisu, who is watching over the Near Shore during the event.

Next, the most popular new god is announced: Ookuninushi has to stop and wrinkle his nose at the name for several seconds before he pronounces it-- Nekhbet, a new arrival in the Heavens.

He moves on to call for a moment of silence recognizing the difficulties of the last year. Many gods have faced reincarnation and returned wearing unfamiliar faces! The Heavens can't yet explain the cause of these changes, but Amaterasu herself urges them to welcome their friends' new incarnations as brothers and sisters in the Heavens.

His final announcement is that, after the successful resolution of the trouble associated with some recent deaths, Orihime has been restored to her place among the eight million gods.

Fortune Weaving

Announcements finished, the main activity of the evening begins. The white-robed shinki bring in huge baskets filled with wooden prayer plaques, setting them down all around the room, and the gods begin to form into circles around each basket. The older gods will gladly explain to any confused newcomers that they're weaving fortunate connections between mortal lives as they spread the plaques out and tie strings off together with great care. All the plaques have names written on them; some are filled out with prayers, some just with notes, and others adorned with pictures of flowers, animals or favorite characters.

Gods and shinki are given blank plaques to inscribe with their own names, too, in order to give them the chance to make fortunate connections as well. (Not necessarily romantic, the other gods will assure them! There are many different kinds of fated connection.)

Help out, take the opportunity to chat, and make some fortunate matches for yourself as well as these hard-working petitioners.

Midnight Disaster

Just shy of midnight, while the gods are still matching up plaques, finishing the last of the banquet, and getting into drunken arguments over who to connect to whom, a shinki in a dark suit torn at the shoulder comes dashing into the Meeting Hall.

"Calamity!" he cries-- and tells the assembled Heavens that a mysterious blight has fallen across a sleepy residential community in the Tokyo suburbs. The blight, a huge circle covering about two blocks, is sucking the life out of everything inside it: plants are wilting, and people and animals have fallen into deathly slumber. As if that weren't bad enough, it's also attracting big, dangerous ayakashi. Ebisu and his shinki are there now, but there aren't enough of them to fight the ayakashi and move the people trapped inside the blighted circle to a safer place before they die.

Volunteers will need to fight ayakashi and rescue the mortals trapped in the blight -- once they're outside its edge, they'll begin to wake up and recover on their own.

In Summary:
  • Enjoy the banquet before the announcements
  • Hear about the most popular gods
  • Help make fortunate connections for the living
  • Respond to a disaster
  • Have fun~

So just to clarify, Fortune Weaving is mostly tying plaques together, or writing names on them?

I just want to make sure I get it right when I inevitably make my top levels. (Hello, this is James, Chikusa/Wendy/Garry player, typing something up for another game, ha ha...)

NPC Orihime

[personal profile] starfestival 2018-04-02 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Pre-Meeting
[ Orihime was aware that she would be a guest of honor again tonight, just not why. So she made sure to assemble a modern regalia for herself, considering she knew they were honoring recent changes in the Far Shore. So her attire uses traditionally sticked kimono fabric in the dress, a wild updo, and a massive bow in the back, all while using colors that would evoke the sun in honor of Amaterasu. ]

Early Announcements
[ She's absolutely floored when the announcement is made and she looks like she wasn't going to be able to give some kind of speech on the matter, even if they'd asked her to. So she simply smiles and bows as low as she can and rises again with the biggest smile on her face, verging on tears. ]

Fortune Weaving
[ Orihime is not actively pursuing opportunities for herself because she's still in such a daze, but if you wanted to chat with her - or possibly pursue her - after she's had some time to calm down, this is a good opportunity! ]

Midnight Disaster
[ Gasp! She starts looking around, focused on whether or not the people who helped her in the previous situations with those ayakashi were around in the Near Shore. They get the top priority of her attention because she trusts them to get things done, so she'll approach them first, but anyone else ushering people away can get her attention too. ]

Have you need of anything? Are you injured? Wh- where is the edge of this calamity they speak of?

[A: Pre-Meeting]

[Half the reason Shun even came to this meeting was to find out more about the old gods they don't often see, so that's what he's doing before the meeting actually starts. He's gone relatively traditional in his formalwear today, with something Orihime made him a while ago, hakama with a western vest and a shirt somewhere in-between - and his red scarf draped over the top of all of it and all his usual hidden weapons in place, since he never goes anywhere without either of those things.

He's trying to listen in on several of the conversations happening, though it's getting a bit confusing to do it at times, especially when he overhears one conversation and turns to identify the responsible parties as...a human-shaped god and a cat in a hat.]

Of course... [He sounds almost exasperated. Of course there's at least one very literal cat god here.]

--

[B: Announcements]

[Primarily, he's at the announcements to find out what the old gods are considering troublesome right now. The last thing Shun is expecting is to be called out as the "most popular" of the new gods, and he looks surprised for a split-second once the guy manages to pronounce his god name before his manner shifts immediately. If he's having attention drawn to him for whatever reason, it might mean unwanted trouble, so he'd rather deter that from the start.

As such, his reaction to being called out is to bring his head up and send a rather flat, cold look scanning across the room - nothing incensing, but ensuring he gives the air of someone not to be screwed around lightly. As soon as the announcements end, he slips away, though he can be found just into the hallway that leads into the Meeting Hall proper, leaning against a wall and looking somewhat annoyed...but mostly confused.]

--

[C: Fortune Weaving]

[Even in the time he's been here, Shun hasn't seen anything like this done before, and he makes sure to watch closely how the old gods are weaving connections together. While he doesn't like the idea of "fated" relationships and never has, he can assume from the images that a lot of these connections are probably coming in answer to prayers or people who might want to find someone interested in the same things as them, so...as much as he dislikes matchmaking, friendship or not, he supposes it's being asked for here. "Some people need the push to meet", or whatever it was that Ren had said to him so long ago.

He is, however, meticulously careful about tying the strings together, because if forming connections is supposed to be this simple, screwing it up must be simple as well. He's not forming any for himself, because he'd rather do that naturally, but anyone interrupting him, whether through choice or accidentally, gets a rather sour look.]

If you want to find out how easy this might be to screw up in person, go do it yourself.

--

[D: Midnight Disaster]

[Thank god(s), a fight. Or maybe Shun shouldn't be so fine with this outcome considering the danger posed to the Near Shore, but with this many gods he's confident they can fix the issue before anyone ends up dead. If it gives him an excuse to leave the party, it's at least a neutral coincidence if not a happy one.]

(i.)

[Shun goes out to collect Kotori as well before heading to the scene (since she hadn't wanted to attend on the chance her previous god had been there), and starts with carrying victims out. The ayakashi are one problem, but he'd rather do the fighting with as little potential for collateral damage as possible. As such, he's slinging up to three people at a time over his shoulders - he doesn't want to drop anyone for lack of space, but he can take a lot of weight - while Kotori takes two as well, following along behind him with a very determined look. Sometimes it's a whole family and just the pets are left to get, sometimes it's only parts of two smaller families or one larger one, but either way, Shun finds himself repeating similar to quite a few of those he encounters throughout the night, nodding back the way he came.]

There's still some left in that building.

(ii.)

[Shun could certainly use the assistance of one of his other shinki here as well, but for the moment, he's going with Kotori, the crack down the handle of the bird-headed war hammer particularly dark and visible in the low light. As huge and dangerous as the ayakashi are, Shun rushes them without hesitation or fear, dodging claws and slipping under lunges to sink the sword at his belt into the monsters' limbs, throw blessed water into their forms, or simply use his own god power to shred at their surface, making their forms rough and uneven as parts of them simply scatter away into the wind.

He might not be able to destroy them with that, but he needs them weak before he can go in with Kotori, and his marked reluctance to raise her until he strikes final blows may be noticed by those attentive enough. Otherwise, he's heading in to provide backup for those who look like they need it.]

If you need a way to kill it, I'm ready. [He flips the war hammer into a reverse grip like he's fully prepared to uppercut it into something's face. It's been that sort of evening.]

Pre-Meeting
[ There is a log of things going on right from the start, it seems like. D2, dressed in uniform (US Navy whites) because that's easiest when he has to dress up, doesn't entirely know what he's supposed to do so he decides to, for the time being, simply observe. He does find something to drink at some point (his preference leans toward the beer end of the spectrum though the kind they have in the Heavens are not the best he's had) but for the most part he keeps to the edges, playing wallflower. If he spots a friend or someone he likes in general, he waves in greeting, if he notices them spotting him. Or he raises his glass in a little salute, if he has one in hand. ]

Early Announcements
[ This is such a theater that it's almost (but only almost) hilarious. It's so forced, on the old gods' part. On the other hand, D2 is glad that Orihime doesn't seem to be in trouble (or at least in as much trouble) as before

At the end of it though, he mumbles to himself, ]

What a farce.

Fortune Weaving
This is cute and all but how does this actually work?

[ He's not really sure, to be honest. He'd like to give it a whirl sure but...well. Yeah. ]

Midnight Disaster
[ You know what? He's not surprised something goes awry. Maybe that's pessimistic of him, but what with so many of the gods gathered here instead of being in the field, it's like something was bound to happen sooner or later.

Because he's a one-god kind of shinki (unless it's an absolute, dire emergency and he's released again afterwards) he can't kill any ayakashi without Forrest, but he can, without any issues, carry people out of the Danger Zone. Some people take some coaxing, though; they don't want to leave. They're safe in their homes, or just wants to rest on this bench for a while or--well, there are various reasons. (On top of that? Being Very Visibly a foreigner - though he's at least not in military formals any more - doesn't really help here. Some people think that he's fishy. Please help.) ]

No [ ma'am/sir/miss/otherhonorific ], I'm not trying to trick you, I just want to help. This area is not safe to be in right now.

[ Obi hates these kinds of things. That is, these fancy functions that are all formal and stuff. But he's come along anyway, to keep up appearances (he is faking it with some people, pretending to be a person who doesn't prefer to lurk in shadows and cover his face) and he's even dressed up. And he's genuinely uncomfortable right now.

Still, he has soon made his way over to the food, and he's focusing on that. Making idle small talk is nothing that he will mind though. Still, he's not leaving the vicinity of the buffet tables anytime soon. ]

Fortune Weaving
Is this mandatory?

[ Praying for connections... Or whatever this is supposed to be. Obi isn't very good at the making connections thing so maybe he technically should want to write down his name (though he has a whole lot of them in his head; "Obi" and "Nanaki" are not the only ones he could call himself) but he thinks it's weird. Like. Really weird. ]

Midnight Disaster
[ Obi seems to brighten up at the prospect of some action. Or maybe it's of killing something. He hates formal situations, and he's been itching to go and do something else and maybe get involved in something illegal or dangerous, maybe both. But dangerous it is! It's a great thing that he always carries like a billion hidden blades on his person. So he's one of those people heading out with a lot of energy - a lot more energy than he had at the meeting. Because this? This is what makes him feel good, at home, and comfortable with. ]

Yeeeeeesh....

[ Kanade is feeling kinda underdressed in a tank top and sweatsuit. She sidles up to the banquet table, one part to stay out of the main press and one part because the eternal hunger part of being a shinki is darn annoying.

Absentmindedly, she begins filling a plate with random food, chatting as she goes. ]
Think there's enough people runnin' the show, here? No wonder stuff gets outta whack sometimes. There's, like, three hundred cooks stirrin' the pot....

[ Except she apparently needs to work on her own utensil handling: she jostles the person next to her. ] Ah, my bad.

[ Fortune...Weaving....? ]

[ Yeah, no. Kanade is glad she stayed long enough during the talky bit at the beginning to see Shun practically spit knives at being singled out like that, but when it comes to thinking she knows what's best for strangers?

Pass. Hard pass. Besides, there's got to be something more interesting going on somewhere. Kanade tries to meander unobtrusively towards the back door.

Kanade is on the higher side of the five-foot range and has a giant mane of red hair. ]

[ Midnight Disaster ]

Oi, don't just lie down!

[ Kanade is shaking one of the afflicted people, hoping for a sign of vigor - anything. Around them, an ayakashi circles, getting closer. ] Don't just lay there and take it, okay! DON'T GIVE UP ON LIFE!!

A.) Meeting of the Gods
[ Yona is rather nervous about tonight's Meeting, having never been to something like this while in the Heavens. She took care in dressing for tonight all the same and appears at the Meeting Hall at the appointed time, accompanied by Yoon. Who she definitely had not clutched onto a little before reaching the guards at the front door in a surge of nervousness that she quickly shoved back down behind a composed expression once more.

But once inside, she does finally relax a little. If only because she gets distracted by all the new sights of unfamiliar faces - and forms, some of the gods taking her by complete surprise, although when she stops and thinks about it, maybe it shouldn't be so surprising.

She may spend a great deal of time lurking around any of the dragons to eye them curiously. Were any of these familiar with Hiryuu or his companions maybe? It was a long stretch, but still...

When not taking in the sights, she can be found seeking out and mingling with faces that are more familiar, catching up with those she hasn't seen since her return. To anyone that hasn't spoken with her in a while, her hair has grown noticeably longer, a little past her shoulders now, although most of it is drawn up in an ornate arrangement at the back of her head and secured with a flowered hairpin. ]

B.) Fortune Weaving
    What a curious tradition.

[ Yona is staring down at the large basket of plaques with an amused expression, reaching down to flip through a few of them, seeing names, images. There's far more than she expected, and it looked like this task might keep most of them busy for quite a while. Not that she minds. If this brings good fortune to the people they are supposed to watch over, she will happily donate as much time as she needed to.

Although she does glance over to the person next to her and casts them a wry grin, shrugging her shoulders as she settles down to make herself comfortable before the large basket. ]

It looks like we may be here a while. I guess we should get started then?

C.) Midnight Disaster
[ Working on the plaques had lulled her into a sleepy sort of focus and as she'd almost reached the bottom of her basket, she'd been starting to consider going to find Yoon after she finished to see if he was ready to go home yet. But the arrival of the shinki bearing bad news banishes what little sleepiness had fallen over her.

Yona is immediately on her feet, stripping out of her ornate outer robes and leaving them behind, keeping instead the lighter robes beneath that are much easier to move and work in. She joins the others volunteering to help and quickly teleports with any of her companions who wish to come along to the Near Shore.

Once there, she focuses primarily on evacuating the area and getting the people to safety, but should any of the ayakashi wander close to her location, she will not hesitate in joining others in the fighting. ]

So, if we've got plaques for the new gods and shinki, does that mean the old gods and their shinki have plaques to tie as well?

Also, what happens if you try to color strings (like, say, black,) or cut ones that were already tied? Anything in particular, or just something for other people to be scandalized about and respond to?

[ Hibiki is making the rounds of the various tables in this gathering, anywhere there's a smooth, flat surface. Her hands are tucked into her yukata pockets, and she looks the very picture of self-satisfaction.

Everywhere she's been, the tables have mysteriously been graced with more invitations to a certain upcoming masquerade party. Successful promotion is the key to running a successful talent agency.

If you watch closely, you might see one hand flick out of that sleeve, invitation in hand, as she passes by.... ]

[ Early Announcements ]

[ The declaration of Nekhbet as the most popular new god in the heavens is meant with a thunderous reaction. Namely, someone standing next to the drinks dropped her own cup right onto the others and caused a chain reaction. Who knew these things were so fragile!

Hibiki's hand is still twitching above the carnage, staring dumbly up at the podium. ]
N-Nekhbet....they said?

Unbelievable...

[ She looks like something just got smashed internally, too. ]

[ Fortune Weaving ]

So this is how human relations are forged?

[ Cleaned up after Nekhbetgate, Hibiki observes with a wry smirk. ] Haphazard as suspected. No wonder they're so easily mistaken for falsehood.

[ She watches some more. She frowns. She moves forward.

Fifteen minutes later, she can be found hogging an entire table, constructing an elaborate web of relationships according to some criteria that only she knows. Each plaque, furthermore, has a little doll next to it of the person whose name is on said plaque. But as for a plaque with her own name on it? Nowhere in sight. ]

And she won't know without assistance that he - [ Here's a knot. She moves the two dolls so they're next to each other. ] - is her only paramour.

[ Midnight Disaster ]

[ Were you rushing to the aid of this fallen huddle of victims? Worry no further! Someone has completely cut you off, swinging down from behind you on a glittering purple rope, scooped up every single person, and swung away again. Completely stealing your thunder, by the way, but surely their gallantry excuses that.

Their identity, however, shall remain a mystery. They were wearing a golden mask, a long cape, and an extremely silly hat.

Pursuing them is, of course, ridiculous. They'll be back soon enough to display their awe-inspiring competence once again... ]

Pre-Meeting

[ It’s been an interesting last three weeks! Or, so he’ll claim, if asked. In truth, the reality is quite different: It’s been lonely, boring -- even worrisome, if he allowed himself to fret, which he doesn’t. Things are what they are, as they are; and his faith, as always, is placed firmly in the idea that everything works out in the end, no matter the how, why, or when.

But! Needless to say, he’s glad for this shake-up in all the humdrum, even if the formalwear makes its return a bit too soon for the preferences of some. Just like that fateful night before where they gathered like this, he once again fills a meager plate with whatever caught his attention, and seats himself among friendly faces -- some familiar, some less so.

Though any and all company is welcome by his side, if he sees a friend looking for a seat, he’ll eagerly wave them over, and pat the spot next to him. ]

Early Announcements

[ True enough, a lot has changed in the Heavens -- even over the past few months, Tatara can’t imagine a year! Still, he listens curiously to the announcements while continuing to nurse a glass something only slightly alcoholic.

...He nearly chokes on a sip upon hearing the winner of the Heavens’ popularity contest.

My, my! Well now, color him surprised. He couldn’t have called that one if he’d had a boatload of hints; hell, he might not have believed someone, if they’d told him the answer preemptively. But then again, maybe punching innocents scores big points with followers, who knows? All the same, he can only summon his same smile from somewhere after a moment, knowing Reisi would be proud. Or is proud, for all he can say, being removed as he is. Nevertheless, Tatara sets his drink aside to applaud anyway. Holding grudges requires way too much effort, after all. ]

Fortune Weaving

[ The so-called ’fated connections’ he’s made haven’t worked out so well -- in his last life and this one, both, he’s now convinced -- but Tatara’s a bit too upbeat and optimistic to let that hold him back. So, as he’s offered a plaque and the tools required, he signs his name on the (metaphorical) dotted line, no questions asked. Whatever it is he’s just signed up for, it’s fine by him.

On the way out, however, he spots a plaque that can’t help but be eye-catching to him. His expression momentarily shifts to something blank, nigh-somber as he traces his fingers over it briefly before moving on. ]
