What: Uncover the remaining secrets of the mysterious forest.
When: Nov 29 - 30
Where: Chichibu National Park & the Central District
Summary: A heavily forested wilderness area in Chichibu National Park is attracting dangerous numbers of ayakashi, and Heaven's forces suspect that this might be the mortal forest that was connected to the Heavens in order to kidnap gods and shinki a few weeks ago.

Walk in the Woods
- On the morning of the 29th, Heaven's messenger doves drop off small folded cards at the doors of every temple. The cards read,
- We believe that we have identified the location on the Near Shore where the human accomplices were working. As it is a large area, we offer you this information, in case you are able to assist us in searching for clues to the identity of the culprit. Please investigate with caution: there are reports of ayakashi in the area.
Attached is a map to a large national park in the Kanto region, with a section of the park cross-hatched in red pen. Anyone who goes to investigate the marked area will discover that it is heavily forested and contains about a mountain and a half; the ground is steep, muddy with autumn rain, and slick with dead leaves, though some red and orange colors are still grimly clinging to the branches overhead. Watch your step! The supernatural menace seems to have faded, but the purely natural hazards can do almost as much damage.
Heaven's forces, wearing white short jackets with gold chrysanthemum emblems over much more sensible jeans and hiking boots, can be seen here and there throughout the forest, searching for clues themselves. If somebody gets in a real jam, they might be willing to lend a hand.
Mysterious Trees
- Towards the center of the cross-hatched area, investigators may begin to see some familiar signs. Are those bits of torn-down spell papers still fluttering from nails driven into the trees? Vines and tree branches cut and broken by the hostage rescuers breaking through? Footprints, torn bits of black hooded cloaks... there are clues aplenty here.
There's something else, too: a mysterious presence still seems to haunt the forest. The trees might not move when anyone's watching, but it seems like they're in slightly different positions every time you look away and back. And what was that flicker of movement in the underbrush? Is there still someone here?!
Comment on the NPC REQUEST/CLUE SEARCH thread below to request specific details, or to go hunting for that mysterious presence.
Ayakashi Attacks
- There's more than one mysterious presence in these trees... and some of them are definitely not friendly. The forest's aura is unsettling and creepy enough to partially mask their approach, but ayakashi of all types and sizes seem to have been drawn here. Some wind along tree branches or soar through the air on fleshy, wide-spread wings. Others crawl or even burrow in the ground.
And all of them are excited at the possibility of a divine meal. Look out!
Autumn Leaf Viewing
- An area of the Central District planted with maple along a stone-walled canal has been decorated with hanging lanterns, comfortable spread mats and cushions, and an abundance of delicious food and drink on the afternoon of the 30th. Everyone is invited: new gods and old, those who helped investigate the Near Shore forest and those who didn't. For those who did investigate, though, one or two of the white-robed shinki who are helping with the party preparations and enjoying the food and drink themselves will take the opportunity to pull them aside and ask about their findings.
The party includes games as well as food and drink. Kites, poetry games, tag, hide-and-seek, card games and dice games are going on all over. There's even some determined board game and mahjong players who have brought their favorite game to the outdoor venue and are setting up on mats with immense care.
At one edge of the landscaped area where the party is being held, the ground slopes up, and is planted with a riot of bright gold, white and rust-red chrysanthemums. Like the ones that bloomed everywhere a few months ago, these flowers exude a sense of peace, confidence and security to anyone nearby, and especially those who pick the blooms to wear in their hair or their buttonhole.

In Summary:
- Investigate a wild forest
- Watch out for nasty trees
- Exorcise an ayakashi infestation
- Enjoy some hard-earned relaxation
- Have fun~

[None of the other Servants she knows of don such heavy armaments. But she does relax a little further as Mordred's face is revealed; the way her helm disappears is intriguing, but there are more important matters to attend to.
Also it is entirely possible Mordred has been following her the entire time. She can be very sneaky when she wants to be. However, that being said--]
But... I suppose I am. I had thought perhaps my nerves were simply getting the better of me after all that has transpired in this place, but if you sense something too, then perhaps mere scraps of cloth and paper are not all that is left here... [Though that leaves the question of just what is lurking in the forest with them.]
Sorry for the delay, my PC died D:
But the feeling is short-lived, quickly morphing into bitterness as the goddess brings up the recent events that took place in the forest— events that Mordred was very much involved in. ]
Tch! I came here looking for more of those wretches that were behind everything but the place is deserted.
[ She'd brutally killed a handful of the cultists during her escape but she doesn't believe that was even a fraction of their number.
Like a guard dog sensing an intruder Mordred's attention suddenly snaps to the surrounding trees. It's as if something just at the edge of her senses is watching them. Although nothing happens Mordred's tightens her grip on Clarent unable to shake the feeling that something is there. ]
Whatever it is, it's definitely out there. The bastard just doesn't have the balls to come out and face me!
[ She says the last part louder, aiming it at the presence in an attempt to provoke it. She switches back to a more civil volume when speaking to Zelda again.]
You're a Goddess, right? Got any idea what it could be? Some dumb Ayakashi?
shh no worries, i'm slow even with a working computer
Sure, her words are very brash and rude, but it's kind of refreshing in a way to be around someone so upfront and honest about their intentions.]
Unfortunately, I have not been gifted omniscience along with my goddesshood, so I can only offer my own speculation. As you have noted, the cult behind the ritual that took place here seems to have abandoned the area - which is, admittedly, a wise course of action on their part. No doubt they suspected we would return to investigate the area once we learned where exactly it was; I imagine they will not return to this place for a long time, if ever. I do not imagine many other humans are scaling these mountains for recreation at this time of year, either. It is too cold and wet for that.
[Did you want Miss Exposition, Mordred. Because you triggered Miss Exposition.]
The presence being an ayakashi is certainly a possibility, but... I am not sure. In my experience, ayakashi are easily tempted out of hiding by the presence of gods and shinki. We "smell good" to them. If there exists an ayakashi that can resist that temptation long enough to stalk us like this, then I would be very concerned, indeed.
[She pauses here, raising her fist to her chin and her eyes narrowing in concentration as she thinks. If it's not a human, and not an ayakashi, then what's left for it to be?]
I suppose... it could be another god, or a spirit of the woods of some sort. One that prefers to reside here rather than in the Heavens. It would not be unprecedented for a forest of this size to house such a being...
[Are these the Lost Woods of this world, is that what they're dealing with here--]
:D <3
Surprised, she almost struggles to keep up with the speed of Zelda's deductions. Once she's done listening Mordred gives an impressed whistle followed by a smirk. ]
Damn, I didn't think you'd given it that much thought.
[ It's a little frustrating to hear the cultists had indeed fled the forest; her thirst for vengeance will go unsated it seems. Still, the idea that a god might be involved hadn't even crossed Mordred's mind. ]
So a god, huh? Why's the asshole skulking around then? Why not just come out and confront us?
[ Actually... Why is she waiting for them to come here when she could force a confrontation?
She turns to regard the trees again, but this time flecks of crimson lightning emanate from her sword arm and begin dancing about her fist. ]

As I said, it is all mere speculation. I could be wrong; after all, I do not have a complete knowledge in what kinds of entities inhabit this world, and--
[And... she might not actually be a Master, but she knows the hints of strong, explosive magic when she sees it. That sparking cannot bode well for anything in the immediate vicinity, no sir. Her tone instantly takes a turn for the concerned and alarmed.]
Saber, what are you doing?
[why are servants like this]
no subject
That violent energy she wielded during her escape— she could feel it coursing through her entire being, flowing down her arm and drawn to the weapon in her hand.
Upon hearing Zelda's question a wicked grin spreads across her face and she draws her arm back. ]
Testing your theory!
[ Mordred bellows excitedly, swinging the weapon in a wide arc. A bolt of blood-red light leaps from the blade, streaking toward the woods. It strikes the first tree, bisecting it in a deafening explosion of splinters and bark. The ferocious energy continues on, laying waste to a dozen more trees before vanishing into the depths.
Mordred seems quite thrilled by the destruction, raising her sword for a second strike. ]
You said they live here, right? Maybe if I wreck their house they'll show themselves.
no subject
Zelda yelps, ducking and covering her ears as Saber's magic lays waste to every tree directly in front of her for a hundred feet. A flock of birds flies off, disturbed. The sounds of trunks and heavier branches cracking and falling to the forest floor echoes across the mountainside. Somewhere off in the distance, someone is probably yelling about their leg.
And then Saber rears up to do it again--]
No! [Zelda rushes to put herself in Saber's way, reaching up to hold her hands back from swinging her sword down again. Sure, given what she knows about Servants, Saber could probably swat her aside like a fly, but she's hoping the slight respect she seemed to have earned earlier will at least make the swordsman pause before doing that.] If anything, you might drive them even further into hiding! Or worse, alienate them to the point they won't tell us if they saw anything regarding what happened here! Would you be keen to cooperate with anyone who wandered into your home only to immediately start destroying it?
[WHY ARE SERVANTS LIKE THIS]
no subject
What the hell are you doing?!
[ Mordred growls at Zelda's interruption. Didn't she see what happened to the trees? Why is she getting in the way?
For a brief moment, Mordred considers shoving the princess aside but ultimately decides to listen to what Zelda has to say. She clicks her tongue in response, her face still a mask of irritation. But then the crackling energy surrounding her sword slowly begins to diminish and she lowers the weapon. ]
If it was my home I wouldn't be hiding from intruders.
[ Mordred gives an annoyed sigh. She doesn't want to admit it but what the princess says makes a lot of sense. ]
But fine, if you're gonna be such a stick in the mud about it I'll just leave them with that warning shot... For now.
[ She's still very much open to the idea of leveling the forest. ]
So how do you want to do this then?
no subject
Unfortunately, not all creatures of the world can be as bold and strong as you. [She offers mostly as a way to soothe the other. Needless to say, she has a good idea of which third of the Triforce Mordred would pick if given the chance.] But if such a being exists in this forest, then it is not only likely, but probable that they witnessed the cult's actions. Potentially, they could be convinced to tell us what they might know about them, like where they came from, or what their goal with the ritual was.
[And you want to fuck up the cult way more than a random forest god, right, Mordred?]
no subject
[ Mordred fixes her gaze on the treeline again, clearly irritated by being denied a chance to vent her frustrations. ]
Anyway, how are we supposed to ask them anything if they won't even show themselves?
[ Wait... Idea! ]
HEY! WE'RE NOT GONNA HURT YOU SO GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND!
[ Sir Mordred: Master of Diplomacy. ]
