What: Uncover the remaining secrets of the mysterious forest.
When: Nov 29 - 30
Where: Chichibu National Park & the Central District
Summary: A heavily forested wilderness area in Chichibu National Park is attracting dangerous numbers of ayakashi, and Heaven's forces suspect that this might be the mortal forest that was connected to the Heavens in order to kidnap gods and shinki a few weeks ago.

Walk in the Woods
- On the morning of the 29th, Heaven's messenger doves drop off small folded cards at the doors of every temple. The cards read,
- We believe that we have identified the location on the Near Shore where the human accomplices were working. As it is a large area, we offer you this information, in case you are able to assist us in searching for clues to the identity of the culprit. Please investigate with caution: there are reports of ayakashi in the area.
Attached is a map to a large national park in the Kanto region, with a section of the park cross-hatched in red pen. Anyone who goes to investigate the marked area will discover that it is heavily forested and contains about a mountain and a half; the ground is steep, muddy with autumn rain, and slick with dead leaves, though some red and orange colors are still grimly clinging to the branches overhead. Watch your step! The supernatural menace seems to have faded, but the purely natural hazards can do almost as much damage.
Heaven's forces, wearing white short jackets with gold chrysanthemum emblems over much more sensible jeans and hiking boots, can be seen here and there throughout the forest, searching for clues themselves. If somebody gets in a real jam, they might be willing to lend a hand.
Mysterious Trees
- Towards the center of the cross-hatched area, investigators may begin to see some familiar signs. Are those bits of torn-down spell papers still fluttering from nails driven into the trees? Vines and tree branches cut and broken by the hostage rescuers breaking through? Footprints, torn bits of black hooded cloaks... there are clues aplenty here.
There's something else, too: a mysterious presence still seems to haunt the forest. The trees might not move when anyone's watching, but it seems like they're in slightly different positions every time you look away and back. And what was that flicker of movement in the underbrush? Is there still someone here?!
Comment on the NPC REQUEST/CLUE SEARCH thread below to request specific details, or to go hunting for that mysterious presence.
Ayakashi Attacks
- There's more than one mysterious presence in these trees... and some of them are definitely not friendly. The forest's aura is unsettling and creepy enough to partially mask their approach, but ayakashi of all types and sizes seem to have been drawn here. Some wind along tree branches or soar through the air on fleshy, wide-spread wings. Others crawl or even burrow in the ground.
And all of them are excited at the possibility of a divine meal. Look out!
Autumn Leaf Viewing
- An area of the Central District planted with maple along a stone-walled canal has been decorated with hanging lanterns, comfortable spread mats and cushions, and an abundance of delicious food and drink on the afternoon of the 30th. Everyone is invited: new gods and old, those who helped investigate the Near Shore forest and those who didn't. For those who did investigate, though, one or two of the white-robed shinki who are helping with the party preparations and enjoying the food and drink themselves will take the opportunity to pull them aside and ask about their findings.
The party includes games as well as food and drink. Kites, poetry games, tag, hide-and-seek, card games and dice games are going on all over. There's even some determined board game and mahjong players who have brought their favorite game to the outdoor venue and are setting up on mats with immense care.
At one edge of the landscaped area where the party is being held, the ground slopes up, and is planted with a riot of bright gold, white and rust-red chrysanthemums. Like the ones that bloomed everywhere a few months ago, these flowers exude a sense of peace, confidence and security to anyone nearby, and especially those who pick the blooms to wear in their hair or their buttonhole.

In Summary:
- Investigate a wild forest
- Watch out for nasty trees
- Exorcise an ayakashi infestation
- Enjoy some hard-earned relaxation
- Have fun~

I'm not much of a tracker myself, but... I think a lot of the evidence is washed out or rotted with time.
[ This is a very serious lobster frown time. ]
no subject
[Strange that he can trust Amaterasu but not the body of government.]
Mayhap we needs start with much more sturdier matters. Tracks may be covered but what about any clothing left behind or sigils on the trees themselves?
[Grasping at straws but it's something?]
no subject
[ Ryoma trusts nobody, politely speaking. Ryoma trusts his lightning sword and maybe Kaden. Maybe. The kitsune is a bit of a bubbly dork. ]
Perhaps they had a base of operations where they were keeping supplies--a small shelter, or a cache of... something.
[ So many possibilities, so many answers lost to water and time. ]
no subject
Even if temporary, it is worth a look.
[Now if a base were to be established...where would it be?]
no subject
Of course.
[ If I were a cache of supplies or a hiding spot, I'd look for something convenient and pre-formed because I'd be working for a weird cult, not an engineering firm. Ryoma frowns, thoughtfully, starting to poke around the trees. ]
Perhaps a tree hollow, or a dirt cave in an embankment...
no subject
[Aymeric isn't used to poking around tree trunks but first time for everything. Just like maybe driving a car...if that will ever happen. Have you ever seen an elezen being half in a tree hole before? Now you have!]
no subject
Unless you think they had enough time and foresight to try building something...
[ Who knows. Maybe they'll find a small cabin out here, rough-hewn and made of mud and sticks--that'd be an interesting question to bring to the heavens, wouldn't it? Ryoma starts peering for himself, rounding trees and poking through brush, looking for something, anything out of the ordinary. ]
no subject
Nah, he ain't seeing anything. And it's the same with other trees nearby.]
Nothing is out of place so we can rule out them staying in the forest during the incident.
no subject
Hm. Ryoma is frowning; this is a mysterious mystery that's full of enigmas with a good sprinkle of annoying quest mechanics sprinkled overtop of it. Ryoma's not that kind of RPG boy, man; you go to a place and the plot flag is there. What is this fetch quest shit. ]
Then perhaps we need to widen our searching range.
no subject
And welcome to Hell, Ryoma. Levequests are total shit. It's worse when you can't kill a thing but it's a pain pacifying when some dumb bird keeps attacking!]
If not just the forest then...
[Wait, parks mean tourism, right? So that means-]
We need to seek out towns nearby. If they did not stay within the forest then that is the most logical point to follow.
no subject
Ryoma seems to perk up as Aymeric takes his thought and slam dunks it through the proverbial hoop, drawing a little straighter in wake of the galaxy-brain style revelation. ]
That's likely where they would be hiding while waiting for either their next set of orders or the chance to strike again, wouldn't you think?
no subject
It's possible. Even if the trail is not as strong now, there is a chance someone within the town could have noticed something or that there are pieces that could not be seen within this place.
We have to seize this chance otherwise we may not get another.
no subject
Well then. What are we waiting for?
[ ... though there's a pause; a chagrined look and a brief tip of the shoulders as Ryoma eases off his exuberance. ]
Though it's likely a task better suited to you and a shinki bound to you, now that I think of it.
no subject
That just makes Aymeric look at him, puzzled.]
Why does it have to be a partner of mine? If there is no ayakashi then I see no issue in the both of us seeking this out.
no subject
What if there is an ayakashi, though?
[ They seem to be just interwoven enough into this whole mess to be annoying. ]
no subject
If so, then I do have a plan. However, it would not feel right to exclude yourself just because we are not partners. Should we not see this through together?
no subject
I'm more than willing to go with you, I just worry about the pair of us being able to protect ourselves when we're halves of a mismatched set. I don't want to see someone harmed because of my inability to act.
[ He may or may not be over the forest thing. The answer is he's not over it. ]
no subject
It will take more than an ayakashi or forest to keep me from staying down. As for your concern...[He raises his wrist up.] Come, Senki.
[And suddenly a gold flash appears as a bracelet is formed on the wrist. And just as much when he speaks "Return." and a woman appears next to Aymeric.]
Sukomi is one of my partners and will be able to come as such if needed. But only as a last resort. I wish for us to complete this together because it holds certain meaning and I can assume for us both.
[Sukomi nods as such. This is meant for the two men alone considering what happened. And Aymeric will not take no for an answer.]
no subject
Tell my wife I love her, okay?
Ryoma watches, diligently, as Aymeric calls a shinki to his side--and Ryoma is struck for a moment about how quickly he, uh, forgot about that aspect of shinki life. Hak has yet to do it to him, frankly. It's very convenient though, isn't it? ]
That's acceptable, then. I feel we'll be able to find something of worth on this errand.
[ Uwah, Aymeric-sama, please don't make Ryoma break through the weird fugue he's in where he's both highly independent and also beholden to someone else's will and not quite used to reconciling those two states yet. ]
no subject
I know we will. I have faith in us.
[If the enemy thinks that they would not branch out and look at all the angles, they would be seriously underestimating them. And that's good in Aymeric's mind. One doesn't become a lord commander and sit pretty in a chair and that's it. The only difference is that people are active on this. It will not be swept under the rug and forgotten.]
no subject
Well then. Let us pursue our quarry, before the trail grows even colder.
[ Ryoma was not yet a king--he was the crown prince, and the general of Hoshido's armies. He disappeared for a few months to fight in another country's revolution. Sitting pretty isn't something he's been caged to do yet; and now that he has no responsibilities, it's time to make someone regret not just getting a summer job at a convenience store. ]
