29 - Autumn Leaves

Summary: A heavily forested wilderness area in Chichibu National Park is attracting dangerous numbers of ayakashi, and Heaven's forces suspect that this might be the mortal forest that was connected to the Heavens in order to kidnap gods and shinki a few weeks ago.






Walk in the Woods

On the morning of the 29th, Heaven's messenger doves drop off small folded cards at the doors of every temple. The cards read,


We believe that we have identified the location on the Near Shore where the human accomplices were working. As it is a large area, we offer you this information, in case you are able to assist us in searching for clues to the identity of the culprit. Please investigate with caution: there are reports of ayakashi in the area.


Attached is a map to a large national park in the Kanto region, with a section of the park cross-hatched in red pen. Anyone who goes to investigate the marked area will discover that it is heavily forested and contains about a mountain and a half; the ground is steep, muddy with autumn rain, and slick with dead leaves, though some red and orange colors are still grimly clinging to the branches overhead. Watch your step! The supernatural menace seems to have faded, but the purely natural hazards can do almost as much damage.

Heaven's forces, wearing white short jackets with gold chrysanthemum emblems over much more sensible jeans and hiking boots, can be seen here and there throughout the forest, searching for clues themselves. If somebody gets in a real jam, they might be willing to lend a hand.

Mysterious Trees

Towards the center of the cross-hatched area, investigators may begin to see some familiar signs. Are those bits of torn-down spell papers still fluttering from nails driven into the trees? Vines and tree branches cut and broken by the hostage rescuers breaking through? Footprints, torn bits of black hooded cloaks... there are clues aplenty here.

There's something else, too: a mysterious presence still seems to haunt the forest. The trees might not move when anyone's watching, but it seems like they're in slightly different positions every time you look away and back. And what was that flicker of movement in the underbrush? Is there still someone here?!

Ayakashi Attacks

There's more than one mysterious presence in these trees... and some of them are definitely not friendly. The forest's aura is unsettling and creepy enough to partially mask their approach, but ayakashi of all types and sizes seem to have been drawn here. Some wind along tree branches or soar through the air on fleshy, wide-spread wings. Others crawl or even burrow in the ground.

And all of them are excited at the possibility of a divine meal. Look out!

Autumn Leaf Viewing

An area of the Central District planted with maple along a stone-walled canal has been decorated with hanging lanterns, comfortable spread mats and cushions, and an abundance of delicious food and drink on the afternoon of the 30th. Everyone is invited: new gods and old, those who helped investigate the Near Shore forest and those who didn't. For those who did investigate, though, one or two of the white-robed shinki who are helping with the party preparations and enjoying the food and drink themselves will take the opportunity to pull them aside and ask about their findings.

The party includes games as well as food and drink. Kites, poetry games, tag, hide-and-seek, card games and dice games are going on all over. There's even some determined board game and mahjong players who have brought their favorite game to the outdoor venue and are setting up on mats with immense care.

At one edge of the landscaped area where the party is being held, the ground slopes up, and is planted with a riot of bright gold, white and rust-red chrysanthemums. Like the ones that bloomed everywhere a few months ago, these flowers exude a sense of peace, confidence and security to anyone nearby, and especially those who pick the blooms to wear in their hair or their buttonhole.

[She hesitates, and then says, cautiously:]

[For a brief, dangerous second, Ginia considers it. Risky, yes, but it's a possible in and a way to protect Votelli and learn who Sensei is, possibly more about the cult.

And then sense kicks back in. Votelli is an unknown individual and while Ginia doesn't mind the concept of nora, she's also not looking to get named by a stranger. Especially against the will of her god. Her expression falls and Ginia tries to maintain her smile but mostly looks troubled.]

I'm sorry, I would have to speak with Caster about that first.

[She already has a hunch what Nia's answer is.]

[Nia still being here is a minor miracle.]

[Frankly, setting aside her own personal disgust at being named in the first place, Nia actually has a more relevant objection to the whole thing.]

Look, it's nothing against you personally, but frankly that Sensei of yours -- well, I wouldn't trust him if he found about that. And with a name from you on one of us there isn't much we could do if he decided he was going, let's say, react unpleasantly?

I may be dead, but I'm not so dead that I want to be more dead.

He wouldn't find out! He can't tell if I name anybody.

[She flushes, ducking her head.]

But if you don't want to I guess that's fine.

Isn't there a name left when a god names a shinki?

[Ginia thinks back on the soulless shinki impeding their progress the first time around. She hadn't noticed any names, though she wasn't looking either. Huh...]

And we'd be hanging around a lot too. It's not him finding out from you we got named, it's him finding us and THEN finding out. I don't want you to have to do anything to us you wouldn't want to because of him.

[She really doesn't want anything done to her period.]

[Though Nia has to pause, one hand going up to scratch below her ear as she looks away.]

Also, I'd probably just be... dumping negative emotions on you all the time. Anger and irritation and general bad stuff. You don't deserve that from a shinki. You've got enough troubles.

There's a name, but it's just on you. You wouldn't have to come here too often, just when it's safe....

[She ducks her head.]

But you're probably right anyway. I don't want you to get hurt.

[Ginia shakes her head and gives a slight bow to Votelli.]

I'm sorry, I can't. My god does not approve of nora and I don't want to go behind his back. But I'm still happy to visit when it's safe.

[Yeah, of course he doesn't. Can't have anyone else laying a finger on his property, no matter what, huh? Nia eyes Ginia sidelong for a moment, uncharitable thoughts for her god fairly obvious in her expression, before she turns back to Votelli.]

Well, I sure don't know what's going on with you, but you sure don't seem happy, and that isn't right. So what do you really need?

I just need to be patient.

[She grips the fabric of her summer dress skirt, not meeting either of their eyes.]

It'll be better when things are all done, and Sensei doesn't have to make sure I stay hidden anymore.

[Will things really be better for Votelli when things are "done" or is the plan only a disaster for all those of the heavens?]

Wait, hold on. [Nia folds one arm across her chest, the other rubbing at her face as she struggles to make sense of this whole scenario.] What I don't get is why you're at odds with the Far Shore. You're a god, right? The Far Shore's a god place. Why are they going to be out to get you, why's it so dangerous for you?

He'll tell me.

[She doesn't look like she believes what she's saying.]

Anyway, the Heavens are just for some gods. Gods that follow all their rules. Anybody who doesn't follow their rules, or makes them mad, gets killed.

Have you seen it happen before? Heaven killing off gods that won't comply?

[Ginia doesn't doubt the possibility at all. There's a focus on appearances and decorum and everything is a bit too perfect, a bit too nice. Dark underbelly? Naturally. But Ginia doesn't discount the idea Votelli is also repeating the words of her sensei too and might not know anything.]

You really doubting it?

[Nia's thoughts parallel Ginia's almost precisely, except for how she immediately gives credence to the suggestion. Sure, V here might just be repeating words, but does that mean they're wrong?]

I've never been anywhere near any of them.

... So I haven't seen any of it. But there are a lot of stories, aren't there?

[Gods fighting, gods being killed for offending more powerful gods... it's not hard to believe at all.

She doesn't want to find out the hard way.]

[The history of mythology is certainly full of gods murdering each other for one reason or another, sometimes getting humans caught up in things. If anything, it's amazing no one's tried to kill off all the new gods at once.

Yet. The forest and cult is a reminder they are as vulnerable as anyone else.]

What about Sensei? Was he someone that left the Heavens?

And you were never part of it? Just been out here for... however long? [How old is she, anyway? She doesn't LOOK even the age Nia does, but, who can tell with gods?]

Some years, I think. I didn't count them. I've never been in the Heavens.

[She casts Ginia a cautious look.]

Sensei's human....

[Wait, what? Ginia's eyes widen and it takes a second to tame her shock back down. 'Why are you following a human? How is a human controlling you?' The questions race through Ginia's mind.]

How did you meet him?

And where?

[Nia's starting to see the way of 'why'. Trusting young kid gets taken in by a guy intent on using her, takes his treatment because she thinks he cares and he's taught her not to trust anyone...]

[She shrugs, expression a little confused.]

He's been around as long as I remember.

How long is that? How old are you?

[Youthful appearances are no indicator of age when it comes to gods, but if she's known a human for as long as it remembers, it's possible she's a new god.

Or recently reincarnated.]

[Nia's thoughts go an entirely different direction, one she shouldn't blurt out but does anyway.]

Did you get stolen?!

[She stops, and blinks at Nia.]
