What: Uncover the remaining secrets of the mysterious forest.
When: Nov 29 - 30
Where: Chichibu National Park & the Central District
Summary: A heavily forested wilderness area in Chichibu National Park is attracting dangerous numbers of ayakashi, and Heaven's forces suspect that this might be the mortal forest that was connected to the Heavens in order to kidnap gods and shinki a few weeks ago.

Walk in the Woods
- On the morning of the 29th, Heaven's messenger doves drop off small folded cards at the doors of every temple. The cards read,
- We believe that we have identified the location on the Near Shore where the human accomplices were working. As it is a large area, we offer you this information, in case you are able to assist us in searching for clues to the identity of the culprit. Please investigate with caution: there are reports of ayakashi in the area.
Attached is a map to a large national park in the Kanto region, with a section of the park cross-hatched in red pen. Anyone who goes to investigate the marked area will discover that it is heavily forested and contains about a mountain and a half; the ground is steep, muddy with autumn rain, and slick with dead leaves, though some red and orange colors are still grimly clinging to the branches overhead. Watch your step! The supernatural menace seems to have faded, but the purely natural hazards can do almost as much damage.
Heaven's forces, wearing white short jackets with gold chrysanthemum emblems over much more sensible jeans and hiking boots, can be seen here and there throughout the forest, searching for clues themselves. If somebody gets in a real jam, they might be willing to lend a hand.
Mysterious Trees
- Towards the center of the cross-hatched area, investigators may begin to see some familiar signs. Are those bits of torn-down spell papers still fluttering from nails driven into the trees? Vines and tree branches cut and broken by the hostage rescuers breaking through? Footprints, torn bits of black hooded cloaks... there are clues aplenty here.
There's something else, too: a mysterious presence still seems to haunt the forest. The trees might not move when anyone's watching, but it seems like they're in slightly different positions every time you look away and back. And what was that flicker of movement in the underbrush? Is there still someone here?!
Comment on the NPC REQUEST/CLUE SEARCH thread below to request specific details, or to go hunting for that mysterious presence.
Ayakashi Attacks
- There's more than one mysterious presence in these trees... and some of them are definitely not friendly. The forest's aura is unsettling and creepy enough to partially mask their approach, but ayakashi of all types and sizes seem to have been drawn here. Some wind along tree branches or soar through the air on fleshy, wide-spread wings. Others crawl or even burrow in the ground.
And all of them are excited at the possibility of a divine meal. Look out!
Autumn Leaf Viewing
- An area of the Central District planted with maple along a stone-walled canal has been decorated with hanging lanterns, comfortable spread mats and cushions, and an abundance of delicious food and drink on the afternoon of the 30th. Everyone is invited: new gods and old, those who helped investigate the Near Shore forest and those who didn't. For those who did investigate, though, one or two of the white-robed shinki who are helping with the party preparations and enjoying the food and drink themselves will take the opportunity to pull them aside and ask about their findings.
The party includes games as well as food and drink. Kites, poetry games, tag, hide-and-seek, card games and dice games are going on all over. There's even some determined board game and mahjong players who have brought their favorite game to the outdoor venue and are setting up on mats with immense care.
At one edge of the landscaped area where the party is being held, the ground slopes up, and is planted with a riot of bright gold, white and rust-red chrysanthemums. Like the ones that bloomed everywhere a few months ago, these flowers exude a sense of peace, confidence and security to anyone nearby, and especially those who pick the blooms to wear in their hair or their buttonhole.

In Summary:
- Investigate a wild forest
- Watch out for nasty trees
- Exorcise an ayakashi infestation
- Enjoy some hard-earned relaxation
- Have fun~

[ One can't just... do that. One can, however, make an ayakashi regret its choices by introducing it to the concept of holy molten steam. Wrathion's shifting forms again, taking to the air as he goes for spitting chunks of fire in the ayakashi's wake.
Only you can privent forest fires? And destroying the evidence? ]
no subject
[ Honestly. Sometimes Hibiki thinks she's the only person who knows what any geographical location should be called.
Also, that fire is freaking Maxie out. Hibiki has to fight to stay seated as the foe is pursued - though it doesn't take long before the ayakashi decides it needs to regroup and somehow manages to burrow its entire thorny body back down into the ground.
Hibiki sighs. Don't tell her. You're not going to put out the forest.
What a bother. ]

[ Because the best kind of correct is technically correct!
Wrathion remains aloft as the horse does a surprisingly normal horse thing of not liking the godsbedamned fire in the slightest; and as much as Wrathion side-eyes that because what proper mount is afraid of fire, you do you, Maxie. You are completely logical and also not made of stars. Wrathion flicks his wings and lands with a heavy pat, perching on a tree branch to survey the outcome of his work (that Hibiki helped with kind of), wings folding on his back.
... of course he's not going to put out the forest. Does he look like some hippy-dippy green dragon to you? ]

[ All place names begin with P, one is not allowed to cuss, and - another stipulation that Hibiki feels in her bones for reasons she can't understand - one's civic duty must always be done, to set a good example for the children watching at home. (Said children are, of course, seated at a nice safe distance back from the screen.)
Thus she finds herself in the awkward position of having to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. Atop a very unhappy horse.
It's the Shikyoin Hibiki Rodeo, but she gets it done! Somehow!
Then twirls her pistol and holsters it while Maxie heaves beneath her, exhausted and not quite sure he's safe yet. She sits up as high as she can on him, glittering slightly. Hah. ] Your twisted sense of geography shall be ironed by revolution.

[ And you should feel bad about it. The world is rated T for Teen, and Ye Olde Except When A Modern Joke Is Funnier High Fantasy kowtows to no wholesome idol romp through thinly veiled parody. There's not nearly enough poop jokes. Wrathion watches, archly, as the nuisance twirls her pistol away and her poor, longsuffering mount continues to suffer--and if Wrathion's ears were outward instead of inward, they likely would have pricked up as Hibiki spoke once more, draconic brow too rigid to truly furrow but giving a good approximation of it all the same. ]
Are you threatening me, mortal?
[ He says, glowing red eyes fixing on Hibiki... and then purposefully sliding lower, because only one of them is actually sitting on a good thousand pounds of 'afraid of fire', and it's not Wrathion. ]
no subject
So she sniffs. ] It's this world itself that's due for a change.
[ There. She didn't say "puniverse". A concession to you, out of her infinite grace.
She doesn't seem too intimidated, in either case, though Maxie...cannot say the same thing. He is a ball of nerves beneath her, ready to bolt. ]
no subject
The entire puniverse and its dad, the cosmic universe, will burn out in a glorious heat-death style nova of stardust and entropic decay before either of them budge. ]
In more ways than one. Do you have the strength to see it through?
[ Maxie certainly doesn't. Pour one out for Maxie--he's the real MVP of this whole thing; loyal enough not to go bolting for a ravine at the first sign of goddamned fire, leaving Hibiki for whatever would deign to eat a god first. Probably a wolf, or a wolf-like ayakashi. You da best, Maxie. ]
no subject
And she actually looks - competently confident about this? ] Watch me well.
[ You have such a lofty perch, and everything.
Maxie wants to go home. Please. Please, can he go home. ]
no subject
He almost admires her, now that she's not doing the p-to-pri thing. Her horse may die if she doesn't shake a leg, though--unless he's also a god? Can horses be gods? Wolves have a god, as do like... harpies and owls and stuff. ]
I'll watch you drop right into that smattering of fire when your poor beast finally drops dead of all this excitement, I think.
no subject
[ That still-smoldering bush is causing Maxie some alarm, though, so Hibiki brings the pistol back out to squirt it into submission. There.
Now the only thing Maxie is worried about is the, you know, dragon. ]
Our duty calls to him.
[ Maxie's body language says he would just rather not be near the LIZARD THAT MAKES FIRE but sure, either way, he gets away from the FIRE HAZARD so why not. ]
no subject
[ Wrathion would love to take that from her, but if you get into a fight with an idiot you have to go to their level and then they beat you with experience. ]
'Our' duty?
no subject
[ Don't worry. She wasn't lumping you in with her.
You aren't worthy of that honor. ]
