Who: Romeo & Jakob
Where: Henir’s temple
When: January 9, 2017
What: Continuation of this thread
Warnings: None, will update
A few days had turned into a week or so with the holidays keeping them occupied. Jakob had understood this and forgiven the delays of the promised lessons, yet when he met Romeo at the doorstep it was with as stern an expression as ever, as if the boy had somehow committed a great offence by simply standing before him.
“It can’t be helped,” he said at last, and offering no further explanation, he continued, “but do come inside. And stay close. This temple is an impossible labyrinth, especially for the uninitiated.” Though granted, the temple’s interior seemed ordinary enough at first glance, if a tad bigger than it looked from the outside.

"Yes sir." He followed Jakob staying close as instructed though he looked around as he walked. He was very interested in what other temples looked like. This was nice though the stairs did seem bigger than he would have thought would have fit!
no subject
Yet…here he was. That in and of itself was pretty impressive.
“Hmph, I’d have expected to have scared you off by now.”
no subject
But he had agreed to teach Romeo and that was very nice of him!

But he said nothing further as he peered into a nearby stained glass window where the vague outline of a sleek modern kitchen resided, if anyone stared hard enough at it. He knocked at this one and let the window shatter, and suddenly they were standing in that sleek modern kitchen, with fiberglass counters and stainless steel appliances—including, of course, some various implements for brewing coffee.

Romeo gasped as the window shattered but then they were somewhere else! It was all very strange.
Romeo looked around with wide eyes. Some of the things were the same as in Elfnein's temple, some were different. He had no idea what most of it was called.
"It's very shiny, sir!"
no subject
“Yes, indeed,” he said in reply to Romeo’s exclamation. “I am sure that some of these appliances can also be found in your household?”
no subject
Romeo was curious by nature but there were so many things that he did not understand in the heavens that if he asked all the questions in his head he would have no time for anything else!
He moved closer to the counter, " Do we need of all to make coffee properly?"
no subject
“But as you are still young and an amateur, you’d do well to master these devices before attempting anything further.”
no subject
That made sense! "How does this one work, Sir?"
no subject
“But this device is a French press, best used for brewing coarser grounds. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. What sort of beans does your god prefer?”
no subject
"Beans? Um The one's in the tub. We only have one sort in our temple!"
And he would guess that was the type that Elfnein liked because they were the one's she got! He didn't know the name. Hadn't even known until this very moment that there were different types of coffee or that they were called beans.
no subject
He rubbed at his temple with a sigh. “The Heavens know what would have happened if I had not offered to tutor you sooner.”
no subject
"Is it not meant to be in a tub, sir?"
no subject
He gave Romeo a pointed look for that. “I’m assuming that’s the case?” He had to be sure, after all.

“But perhaps it would be easier if we explore a different track—how does your master like their coffee? Do they take it black, without the pretenses of cream or sugar, or perhaps they take it with a bit of spices or frothed milk or that sort of thing?”
no subject
"Black. She doesn't have anything in it at all!"
He hadn't even really known you could put things in it. This is why Jakob was the teacher! He knew everything there was to know about coffee!
no subject
“Does she simply take it that way because you don’t know any better?”
no subject
"She would have said if she wanted it a different way!"
no subject
“But of course, she might have never asked for any other way because she knew you didn’t know any better. Don’t you think she’d be even happier if you could provide her with more options?”
no subject
"Yes sir! I think she would be happy if I could give her options." And pleased that he had learned something, she liked it when he learned things.
no subject
“You will certainly go far if you keep that in mind. In service, as with coffee, the more options available for your master, the better! Pray that you never forget such an important rule!”
no subject
"So how do you make coffee with all that other stuff." What had Jakob said? Cream, spices, sugar.
no subject
“To wit”—pulling open a spice drawer, he began pulling out little jars of the stuff, most of them either dried or ground but smelling quite pungent either way, their mingling scents ranging from sharp to tangy to warm to sweet—“adding spices seems a simple matter, but when done carelessly, can result in terrible consequences.”
no subject
"What kind of terrible consequences? Can it make you sick?" He doesn't want to make Elfnein sick with his attempts at making coffee!
no subject
no subject
"Miss Marinette and Miss Celestia both told me that about sweet things, that I shouldn't eat too many and should make sure Elfnein doesn't either! I'll tell her about coffee too because she does drink an awful lot of it!"
no subject
“Yes, you are quite correct. I see you are at least no stranger to paying attention to things of that sort.” That almost sounded like a compliment. He’d better fix that: “But don’t get too complacent! You are still young and have much to learn. Remember that!”
no subject
He stood on tiptoes to sniff at a couple of the jars, smelling the different spices. They all smelled very interesting!

He picked up the jar of cinnamon and handed it up to Jakob.
no subject
“It’s quite a popular condiment for coffees, especially at this time of year. Use it well when you wish to add a fragrant layer of warmth to the drink. It is sweet as well. I suppose you can mix it into your milk if you are so inclined.”

He smelled a few of the other spices. Some of them made his nose go quite funny!
"You only use one at a time, right? Or it will make it waste weird!"
no subject
no subject
"So you can put them in other things as well as coffee?"
no subject
Unless it’s like…alcohol, but really, his god should know better than to entrust a child with mixing her cocktails.

And Jakob was a good teacher! Romeo was very glad he had came here for lessons.
I think we can start wrapping this up?
Yup!
