Summary: The Western District volcano is erupting again, endangering nearby temples and sending ash sprinkling down across the Heavens. Is it natural, or another attack? Those who dare climb the volcano can find out.






Earthquake Warning

On the morning of the 14th, an earthquake rattles windows throughout the Heavens. It's not strong enough to knock down buildings -- unless they're about to fall down anyway, like some of the older abandoned temples -- but it's strong enough to knock things off shelves and startle any late sleepers out of bed.

After the earthquake, strange sights abound around the Heavens. The poetic koi are swimming in organized schools in all of the canals, heading upstream towards the east. Springs of pure water burst out in some areas, and in others, normal springs or fountains have gone temporarily dry. Blue and green lights bob and weave across the landscape.

Falling Rock

The volcano begins erupting with a roar and a bright scarlet glow on the horizon. Ash and bits of rock fall across the Western district, and may even reach into the Southwest, Northwest and southern Central districts. Volcanic glass fibers that look like golden hair collect on trees, fences and buildings.

Trails and fountains of lava are also erupting from freshly opened fissures and wending down the sides of the volcano. Gods and shinki who live in the Western District are going to need some help clearing ash and glass from their roofs, trying to re-route lava flows (the good news is, if you cool one side down enough, you can turn them! the bad news is, that takes a lot of work) or just offering them a spare room to stay until things calm down.

Swamp Gas

It's not just lava and springwater erupting from mysterious new crevasses -- and it's not just mundane volcanic gases, either. Divine volcanic vents are blowing mind-altering fumes all over the Heavens. Anywhere across the Far Shore, but especially as characters get closer to the volcano, they may experience one or more of the following effects:

• Confusion
• Intense emotions
• Anger and irritability
• Impulsive behavior, loss of emotional control
• Hallucinations
• Unusually clear insight into other people and situations
• Coughing, eye and throat irritation, difficulty breathing
• Irresistible impulses to speak in poetry

Most symptoms will clear up after a few hours in fresh air, and all of them will be gone within 48 hours of the last volcano gas exposure.

Mountain Climbing

Natural disasters don't just happen like this in the Heavens... do they? Amaterasu's white-robed shinki are convinced that something is wrong, and they're organizing into search parties to go up the mountain and seek out the cause of this eruption. New and old gods and shinki are welcome to join them, or form their own groups. All of the hazards -- tremors, lava, ash, and volcanic gas -- will get worse as characters ascend the volcano. Strange little spirit flames, in shades of red and blue, dance on the rocks, dazzling, confusing and threatening to singe interlopers.

And there's someone up here, too. A mysterious figure with glowing red eyes is keeping watch on the intruders and vanishing behind boulders whenever someone turns his way. He won't let anyone traveling with one of the white-robed shinki get too close, but solitary gods or shinki might manage to lure him into conversation, if they try....

Those climbing the volcano will have a chance to battle the mysterious figure should their characters choose to do so. If you're interested in a fight, please comment to the 'NPC FIGHT' thread below before the top-level is posted. A top-level for the fight will go up on IC Jan 16/OOC Sept 4.

"What's a gas mask?" He looks at Ebisu, is that what is over his face? It looks weird! "I have a scarf! That helps me not breathe in all the smoke! Is that what a gas mask does too?"

Because if you breathed in lots of smoke you could pass out and that was dangerous!

"That's right. And it helps keep things out of your eyes, so that ash and gas doesn't affect it." There's so much that can happen around lava, after all... More than just burns or breathing in something. "I've been trying to make sure lots of people who've been coming here have something like it."

"Oh!" That was a good idea, because his eyes were very sore with all the ash and he couldn't tie his scarf over his eyes!

"It's good that you have been trying to help everyone!" It's what Romeo has been trying to do as well, hauling water and directing people to safer places! The volcano was scary and it was important that they made sure everyone was safe!

[chibisu]

"We've been trying, but this isn't really our area of expertise..." Something that's been troubling him. He can provide items, but money in this case won't really be helpful. With that in mind, Ebisu is really at a loss.

"Still, do you want one? It'd be okay if you kept it, too."

"As long as you don't mind!" It does seem a lot more helpful than just a scarf!

He guessed there was not much a god of fishing could do about a volcano! "I don't think many people know what to do though! No one was expecting a volcano to explode!"

[chibisu]

"Yeah..." Handing over one of the spares he has on him, his brow furrows behind his mask.

"For a volcano to explode in the Far Shore... That shouldn't happen. Not unless something really wrong has happened."

He took the mask and looks at it for a moment before putting it on, he's not completely sure if he got it right but he did his best to copy how Ebisu was wearing his.

"Something wrong did happen! Everything was shaking. Elfnein said it was an earthquake!" But heaven was supposed to be a place where really really bad things didn't happen! So he didn't know how there had been an earthquake or an exploding volcano!

[chibisu]

If there's one good thing with Ebisu constantly being accompanied, it's that his shinki are there to help with any of the stranger details... like helping a child put on a gas mask. Aomi is the one to notice and, breaking off his conversation with his coworker, kneels down and smiles politely. "Allow me to help," he says, before reaching over to make sure it's tied on properly.

Ebisu allows his shinki to handle that, even as he continues to talk. "Yeah, those are said to sometimes occur, right before a volcano erupts, and then they can continue to happen while lava is pouring down. But, Romeo- is your temple alright?" A tinge of concern edges into his voice. "Do you and your god need a place to stay?"

Aomi was one of Ebisu's shinki that Romeo had not met yet, but he smiled brightly at him when he helped tie the gas mask on. Ebisu really was lucky that he had so many shinki, they were all really friendly and kind!

"We're alright! Everything fell over and a rock smashed a window but it didn't set on fire!" Some of the other temples had not been so lucky but at least it seemed that everyone had escaped in time!

There are a lot of his shinki that a lot of people haven't met, honestly... But that's just what happens when one has a large enough temple. Ebisu hardly thinks anything of it, instead listening to the description of what's happened with concern.

"It's good that such a thing is the extent of damage in your case..." He's definitely seen some place in the West District that are in worse condition. "So do you think your temple will be safe from the lava, or do you and your god need a place to stay?"

"We should be fine!" He hoped. The lava didn't seem to be heading towards their temple. Not yet but Romeo didn't know how fast lava moved or if it changed direction. Fire could spread everywhere though and if it wasn't stop it could burn down the entire heavens.

"Thank you though! It's nice that you want to help everyone!"

[chibisu]

"I can't do a lot otherwise..." This is the extend of his capabilities, even if he's a God of Fortunate. Ebisu's eyebrows wrinkle behind his mask. "But that's why you should be careful running around here, and should stay with your god. There's a lot besides the lava to worry about."

Romeo nodded, he would be very careful and make sure that Elfnein was safe too. "You be careful to Ebisu! And stick together with all your shinki so you keep each other safe!"

As long as they stuck together it would be alright! They could protect each other!

[chibisu]

"Don't worry, Kunimi won't let me go anywhere without him." Literally. He's possessing his body right now, honestly. When it comes to natural disasters, none of them can take any chances.

"Do you need help getting back to your god?"

[myblueskies]

"It's good that mister Kunimi is helping you!" He grinned, Ebisu had explained at the hot water bath place about Kunimi's powers, they did sound really helpful for when things got scary like this!

"It's okay! I'm going to go back there now. Thank you for the mask!"

[chibisu]

"It's nothing. We're glad we can help." Carefully, he pulls out his own phone. "If you need any help, please don't be afraid to call us! We can make it around very quickly."

Partially because, you know, teleportation.

"Thank you! I will! And if you need any help you can call me too!" He could help! If Ebisu needed it!
